Hello everyone!
To begin, I'm new to this and quite frankly I'm not even sure on where to begin. I'm looking to get an app up and running for Android. I own a Scuba Diving business and am looking for my customers to be able to access the app on the go and look to when there are dives, activiites, newsletters, etc. This would be the first goal.
The next goal would be to incorporate my eccomerce business into the app (same business) as well. I don't want to get into complicated coding, etc. I want a nice but not fancy GUI that my customers can easily navigate.
What my question is, where do I begin? What are some common issues, etc?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Chris
Well you will need tp learn java and set up the android sdk etc. There are plenty of getting started guides out there for this.
Then what you really need to think about is how you want to go about designing the app. For example all ypu have said could be made into a website that a app cpuld be made to display using a webview

What about some of those programs out there that have everything setup for you and you just fill in the blanks and use a template that they have?

OK Do This
You need to join App Inventor beta
You'll need a gmail (google) account
Then its quit simple
You'll need to create 'Table arrangements' and 'Horizon arrangements'
Add 'Banners' just as 'Images'
The buttons you want to use need to be 'Created' using 'Button' with 'Own button image' added and 'Link'
Create 'Activitystarters' that 'Link to button' under 'DataUrl'
Add 'android.intent.action.VIEW' to 'Action'
Once done
Click on 'Open Block Editor'
Once 'Java 6' is open
Click on 'Own Blocks'
Drag each 'Button1.click' etc you created over to 'Contents window'
Drag each 'Activity Starter' for that button over to 'Contents window' connecting in in the 'Middle' of 'Button1.click' etc to complete block.
Once done 'Save'
Test using 'New Emulator' wait load then click 'Connect Device' at top and select 'Second choice'
If happy close 'Package for phone' in first window to 'Download to Computer'
Upload to Google via 'Development Centre'
The first App Account setup cost AU$20- AU$25 dollars and free there after for further projects.

I am looking for a very specific app to assist me with interviews. What I need is an app that can open a Word or Excel style template page. The page will have a list of questions and the space to fill in answers just like any normal paper application form.
Name:.........................................................................
Address :.....................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
Tel:................................................
Etc.
Now this bit is easy I have seen many app's that can do this, the next is the difficult bit,. I need the app to allow me to use a stylus to handwrite the answers in the fields. It does not need to recognise what I have written just save the page as I have annotated it with the handwritten answers. I can then open the template again and conduct the next interview.
Is there such an app out there? If not would anyone be interested in creating one? If this is a new idea then whoever wants it can use it. Thanks all.
Sounds like a good idea that can easily be accomplished using the Google App Inventor.
If I have a few spare cycles I'll see if I can throw it together.
Nice idea, would be a handy little app for many i'm sure.
Would be nice for it to have a "done and save" button so it auto went to the next form, and have an edit mode to edit the forms themselves (making it applicable for any survey, data collect use).
I'll have a look at the app maker today and see if a noob like me could knock something up (allthough its probably best left to those with experience).
Definately a good idea though ^^
EDIT: Oeer, think i may need to readup on the Appmaker for a week before i start ...Spose have to start somewhere. Consider me outof the dev picture for a mo ...allthough need any art/buttons i can help anytime xD
Hello everybody and thank you for your interest in Beta testing my Android application. My app is called PulseLA and I am attempting to create a social media application that ranks people, food, movies, cars, etc…. for people to share what they love, hate, and always wanted to do… I have not tested this application on many devices and for some this app is getting (sort of smooth) and for others it’s a total disaster! I was hoping to get maybe a group of interested individuals to join my beta team for PulseLA. You do not need to reside in California or Los Angeles to use this app. But I do have more data centralized in L.A. in opposition to the rest of the United States.
Please contact me via E-mail or through this forum and I will send you an APK for install. I would greatly appreciate all comments, suggestions, and questions for further clarification and analysis.
My E-mail – [email protected]
Facebook Fanpage - http://www.facebook.com/PulseCaster
This app is currently on iPhone if you have two phones or an itouch and would like to see a live alpha version of my app. Please search for “PulseLA”. I have not done SEO modifications so you must spell “PulseLA” exact without spaces or you can do a search for “Pulsecaster”.
Thank you everybody!
Here is a direct link to download PulseLA
Thanks for the initial help. I have gone back to development! I will post back a link in the future.
If anybody is curious about how development is going then feel free to PM me or E-mail me. [email protected]
ehm, can i test this ?
got a tab to try it out on
Hi will try it

Thanks. Sent Pm's with a link to download PulseLA.
If it will be easier I can send it to your e-mail so you can access the APK directly on your Phone/Tablet.
I'll test this out.

EDIT:
Getting a white screen, when clicking on other tabs the loading animation plays but nothing happens. Clicking camera tab brings up 'create account' page. Notice a flashing 'camera roll' screen before creating account shows. Very iPhone-ish. Star = Favs? Finally loaded. Most of the other tabs don't. Just a lil advise, try to make the app as Android-ish as possible. A lot people hate, hate, hate direct iPhone ports to Android. At least have some sort of ICS elements in it.
P.S. Didnt sign-up.
This is actually the build for android and was not meant to be iPhone ish =[ However, we do need to go back in and redesign the app for better interface. Are there any apps that you think would be a good idea for me to look at to get a better idea of Android interfaces?
In the future the first tab which is feed will not be clickable as it is based on followers. Because you did not sign up for an account it will obviously be empty =] Upon signing up for an account you will randomly follow 5 people.
Loading the Star the first time is very slow. It will go faster on a wifi connection.
The star is a global ranking based on the top categories. If you were to click the Camera button then you could add things your opinion on just about anything based on the categories. *Note these are not working perfect and search is almost useless at this point. So you should be able to look up under category (things) movies, phones, brand names, food, etc...
So far thank you all for initial testing. What I really need some feedback on is whether or not facebook connect works as I've had a lot of problems at this front. Also if you are able to submit a camera pulse (In the app Camera Tab -> Use Camera) as some devices this crashes the app.
I want to learn how to develop apps for Android/Linux
3D interface apps are what I am most interested in building.
I know it will be hard work but I need to know where to start.
If possible I would like to buy good video courses to take like TrainSignals or CBT Nuggets.
There's also this awesome open sourced 3D UI I would like to port to Android.
Hi.
Could you add some info on your current knowledge base. Do you have previous experience on java and/or 3D programming?

No, I have 0 experience in code.
I'm just a Windows System and Network Admin (6 years) That needs to step it up.
LE BUMP!
Lol I can't tell if you're trolling... but
start with 2 things:
* lightly hacking your android phone to get the hang of the little things like .apk's and the filesystem (it seems like you prolly already know this biz)
* and start playing with the Android SDK
You need the Android SDK before you can do pretty much anything... and try to stick to the Java language (otherwise you also need the NDK)
Eclipse sucks majorly as an IDE (you program with these), but at least google now has a premade sdk+eclipse kit that mostly works
you can start from scratch with programming courses but obviously as a network admin you will have a strong sense of programming without even realising it.
do some intro stuff like MyBringBack where they teach you XML and overlays etc and then go straight to advanced Java (hint: object-oriented) and then OpenGL (the 3D side of things).
edit: please hit thanks if this post was AT ALL helpful, as for some reason I can't really do anything useful in any other thread than here so it is very much appreciated
EDIT EDIT: waiting yet again for annoying 5-minute rule... and that's me done in this place for another while me thinks!

I don't concider it flame bate....but yet I use both
as for how to learn.
1) start reading code.....all you can.
2) Learn to use a debugger properly.....I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH
3) Discover new and intristing ways to think.....I find that I an other devs that I know do not allways stop to look at the larger picture
4) prepare for some long time at the keyboard....and get some time away to.

ps.....I have been doing this for to long
Hi,
Looking for software to develop an app (preferably offline) which will help someone with no coding experience. I am proficient with photoshop & after effects but I don't know any coding.
I am sure at some point I'll require a pro to write some custom script for me but I want to get as far into the project on my own as possible.
I don't want to be bound by some websites hosting terms, with monthly fees and all this other stuff. Preferably, I'd build my app offline and go from there...I don't honestly trust these websites with little app builders then your app is stuck on their site and you're forced to use their hosting and things like that....if it's my app, it's my app!!! I shouldn't be bound to some website or whatever.
So, preferably offline app builder which someone with no coding experience can use?

I promise you I've searched extensively and yet to find what I'm looking for. AppsGeyser lifts content from the net and turns it into an app...it remains on the appsgeyser site so doesn't really fit with what I'm looking for...I just want simple app creation software without having to learn code because what I'm looking to do isn't super-unique, it's just for an add-on to my existing business.
Has anyone ever used Wix for website creation for example?? Fantastic user interface, couldn't be simpler yet the possibilities are pretty much endless especially since you can add custom coding if you wish but I've built a few sites with Wix, all function great, all look fantastic...just a shame they don't have the same service for app creation.

It's pretty much just a local directory type app mate....that's why I mentioned above that I am really not trying to do anything unique so I'd imagine there's some nice editing software out there somewhere I could utilise and have my app designed and created pretty quick....like the above example of the Wix website,...you could have a fantastic looking website up and running in a couple of hours.
Anything guys?
Still looking for nice easy app production software.

Just sounds like thats way more advanced than I'm looking for dude.
I want build an app to ad onto my local directory business and it really isn't doing anything advanced or unique...it's the content that separates it's from other apps, not it's functionality....an app containing a load of menus with click through links (are these called hyperlinks?) to that section of the directory then linked again to open specific entries within that section of the directory....
Surely, there's a nice easy, almost drag and drop, design software out there I can use?
I'm really put off by these app builders I see that are $50 per month or whatever but if I have to go that way, ok. Thoughts? (Appreciate everyone's input and I know it can be frustrating talking to newbies that really don't have a clue so appreciate the input and patience folks!)

I know enough to know that's simply not true...the reason for the post is that there's loads of drag and drop simple app builders out there that require no coding whatsoever....the point in the question is what is the best one and also the embedded question of why are there monthly charges that have such a huge range?
So, no...no code does not = no app.

Eclipse allows drag and drop bit you're dreaming man. There is no way you can make anything work on android when making an app without knowing some basics of code.
So get that book I told you about, get eclipse, and get the book "hello android" which helped me start out.
Android apps are way more complicated than they seem bro
Monthly charges is because to make app building software is so damn hard. Trust me. Try your hand at old school app development. You will learn to appreciate app makers cause no joke its hard as hell

But question is that why any company offer you free tool that helps you to create app without coding knowledge. So only two option is here May be company offer paid tool for that and i think so no as such paid tool available in the market.
2nd option is company offer you online tool where you can create app without the knowledge of tool, in return companies want you to buy their subscription etc... to use that code.
I used some tools for testing person and some of them give you .apk and .ipa file to test your app on device but do not give you source code of app. You can read more about 4 best app building softwares, but as i mentioned that they do not give you source code.
I hope so above mentioned information helps you.
Please don't forget to thumb up button if it is helpful. Thanks
Not long ago, people / businesses in the UK would have to pay at least £12,000 for the development of a simple website, without administration / hosting / commerce functions, etc.
Now, you can produce professional websites yourself with a little cost and effort. Downloading free templates, Adobe Muse, WebPlus X8, etc.
Adobe have now launched DPS (Digital Publishing Solutions) which will eventually become a standalone, offline solution for people that want the ability to create apps on an offline basis, with a one-off cost (no monthly subscriptions).
Without a doubt, such offline app dev software is in development now, and I cannot wait until it arrives.
For now, I use HTML5 based WYSIWYG solutions which work well in good wifi / 4g connection, but with no App Store listing and no ability to push notify, but I can create these without subscription / cloud based resources.
It suits clients that have a user base that would generally be within good connection areas and require their services in such a place.
Hi guys I have a service where I provide info to some clients of mine for a small monthly fee. Currently I'm using whatsapp and Telegram groupchat as this isn't really professional I'm thinking about developing an app for this service. I haven't contacted any developer yet as I want to have an overlay of the functionality before contacting anyone.
So basically I want an app that my clients can install and register to, only registered clients can receive messages from with notification, notification should be customizable for example when the phone is on quit modus the notification should still make a sound if the user wishes and there should be a possibility to chose an other sound that the standard notification sound. Also all notifications/messages should get listed. Last but not least the messages should be send received instantly.
Is this explanation enough for a developer? What other info should I provide?
There's really no problem with that, but the biggest issue will be both Android and Ios Operating Systems...
Android isn't a problem at all, and you don't even need to pay the playstore for publishing it...
But for Ios is different, and Apple's app store has a really heavy eye on the apps..
The fact is that they are already full of messaging apps and i don't know if they want to allow others...
Of course i'm not saying they won't let you, i'm talking about a negative response...
Talking about windows phones, i don't know the politics behind their store, but i don't think it's a good idea.
However, the whole project is totally possible and you should't have many problems.

As for the info...we need to know if you want an Administrator dedicated app (that does not mean you can edit the whole app project, it means you can send notifications and announcements to all the people that have your app installed at once and others).
We need to know about the clients.
Do you want some other services (even if not yours) from open source projects?
About the messaging:
Do you want videos Being played in the app or in the gallery?
Wich files are you allowed to send?
Video-chatting or no?
Cloud services?
Customisable User interface or not?
Sorry for the long list (even though its much more longer than that) but these are the general things we need..
