My PRL is hosed - please help! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I think I screwed myself....
I was having coverage issues with my phone so I opened an issue with Verzion. My PRL version was something like 150XX and the rep though I should try updating my PRL by dialing *228 and pressing option 2.
Seems harmless enough, done it before on previous phones.
So the update worked and my PRL verison jumped to 54XXX(!).... and now I don't get a 4G LTE connection .
Now I cannot get my PRL back to the 150XX version and *228 doesn't work at all.....gives me a text message saying the "SIM card has already been programmed etc...etc..."
I suppose I will go about hacking on a PRL that works. Any pointers where I can find stock verizon PRL's?
Is forcing PRL on a 4G LTE device possible? I get mixed answers when searching on how to do this.
Or is my SIM just fubar'd now?
Thanks.....

I'd get a new sim. Dialing *228 on a 4G phone should never be done and I don't know why the rep told you to do it. Your sim is probably fried. No biggie.

Yep. Don't dial *228 on a 4G phone. Just get a new SIM.

My phone is rooted... is this going to cause me any hassles/issues if I take it into the store for a new SIM?

I would just in case... Just back everything up and you should be ok...

After doing some more searching, looks like I'm not the only one....

Youll be fine with it taking it in rooted. Just tell them the rep told you to dial *228 and it broke your SIM. The instore employees very rarely do any snooping.

[Q] HTC Merge SIM help

Hello, I bought a SIM card from straight talk hoping to use it on my merge because I have seen people online that says I can do that as long as i have my SIM card unlocked. But after I got the card activated and put it in my phone it don't work. I try changing to GSM and using their APN but I have no signal, the mobile network just stays unchecked and I cannot check it. After a few minutes my phone suggests switching over to global mode and i do have mobile signal then but still no connection with anything. I called the straight talk woman and she told me it only works with AT&T or T-Mobile phones but it just don't make any sense to me that you have to have one of those previous carious just to get them as a new carrier? Am I missing something here?

Thanks to the helpful people over at 2fastroms and their quick response I found out that you have to have the 1.06.00.0910 verizon radio flashed to your system. You have to install the radio in the boot-loader and not the recovery menu, it took me a minute to figure that one out. Just informing anyone that has the same problem as me because I could not find it anywhere else on the web. Anyway credit to jianC for the help.

Can't Dial Out or Receive Calls

My husband finally let me root and rom his S3 (I have a Gnex). Unlocking the bootloader and rooting (using Odin) went well. When I installed SlimBean+GApps, however, we started having an issue. He kept losing 3 & 4G signal. We didn't know about the roaming issue, so I had not backed up the IMEI. I flashed Clean Rom, and the issue is partially fixed.
The phone's signal is fine now, 3-4 bars 4G most of the time. The trouble is, we can't dial out to any numbers, and any calls to the phone go straight to voicemail. We've pulled the sim card and let it sit for a bit, but that didn't help. Dialing *228 (as Verizon tech support had him do about 4,583 times) just brings up a message about the phone being activated by the sim card, and roaming capabilities being updated. All tech support had to say was that Google Voice was probably the problem, even though we've both had it for ages with zero issues. :/
Any ideas? I don't really want to unroot and take it in to the Verizon store, but I will if there is no alternative.
EDIT: Just discovered that 4G is only working when "Preferred network mode" is set to Global, rather than LTE/CDMA.
*228 is for 3g phones only, it does absolutely nothing for LTE sim phones. Here's your solution btw.
I knew it! I kept telling them I didn't think that was supposed to do anything when I have a sim card. Crazy first string tech support. They also didn't know my battery was removable.
Will try the things listed in that link, thanks.

Haha Verizon lost credibility with me when I rented their global phone for travel last summer and when I got back to the US the instructions to get my GSIII working began with dialing *228. There wasn't even a warning about it being unnecessary for LTE sim phones.
Good luck and let me know how that goes.

Phone no longer activates 4G LTE

So recently I flashed the Jun 14th revision of Paranoid Android. I'm not sure if it's actually because of that ROM, but ever since, my phone hasn't been activating 4G LTE, even on different ROMs that previously had. Like, Synergy ROM r484 had no issues and it would activate 4G, but now it won't. Same with Hyperdrive ROM.
I still get 3G and calls go through (another problem I had was that the phone application kept force closing), so I'm assuming the phone just isn't contacting Verizon to activate itself.
TL;DR: Is there a way to manually activate 4G by calling Verizon or...?
EDIT: I'm now running the stock OTA MF1 update (courtesy of beans and scott) with the MF1 baseband, but still no 4G.

Did you use *228? That fries the sim card and you won't get 4G. Otherwise, I'm not sure what to tell you, but on the bad advice of a vzw customer service rep I fried my sim card that way.

To my knowledge, all Verizon 4G LTE phones don't allow you to dial *228 at all because of that particular issue.
I pulled out my sim card, and there does seem to be some sort of discoloration on the gold contacts. Is it possible to just get a new one in the mail or pick one up from my local store? I've been prowling through the verizon forums and have had no luck yet.
Any Verizon store will have 4G Sim cards. They didn't charge me when I needed a Micro Sim for my Galaxy S3. I have heard that a bad Sim can cause
your problem.

When I bought my s3 the day before it arrived I went to my Verizon store they sold me one for 9 dollars. Also *228 no longer fries the sim it doesn't update either it just loads the activation from the sim.

So when I dial *228, I get this message: "A Verizon Wireless SIM card has activated your service and updated your phone's roaming capabilities."
It doesn't do/change anything; I'm still stuck on 3G.

Yep as in the Prl and activation is pulled from the sim to get that updated you need to call Verizon and ask them to push you an update provisioning they do this every so often normally but with the md3 update the radio and prl was flawed the mf1 was to fix the issue downgrading and getting reprovisioned should fully roll you back.

Sorry, I'm not fully understanding what you mean. What do you mean downgrading? Isn't MF1 and upgrade to MD3?
And what is/how do I get reprovisioned?
Lastly, by "fully roll [me] back", you mean get 4G back online, yeah?

I posted that from before mf1 was rooted and rolled out to all
I meant for it to read to fix the issue rolling back to mb1 from md3 will help the issue and downgrading should fix the new issues
Upgrading from md3 to mf1 is another way to potentially fix it but knowing verizon im sure there is a broken thing somewhere in it.

This is what my about phone says right now. I'm pretty sure I have everything up-to-date. Not entirely sure what it says under kernel version means.
So if it's still not fixed after flashing the new mf1 build ROM and mf1 baseband, do you think it's something else?

From what I can tell it looks like your using the ota version the only other thing you can do is request Verizon provision your phone from what has been said is people went from 0-1 bar to 3 steady.

You're going to have to call the support line and tell them you are getting terrible signal and such and you read on the support forum that provisioning can help what they will do is push the activation to your phone again this will update the prl and make sure it has all the settings correct.
I've gotten LTE w/o 3g and 3g/1x without LTE by playing with manual APN setting. But fixing it requires a prl 'push' or revalidation by upgrade points because the merging of d2vzw and the d2 variants has made a lot of little issues and how Vzw handles its APN s/handoffs are more involved since sprint. So other than doing that you can re go through your ROM and use this post to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069850 manually fix your ROM by extracting an old backups settings and replacing each and every file relating to Vzw s APN telephony etc handlers. Its a pain either way but I'll collect current ones for others to use and look into signing a flashable zip for PA users.
I know this is an old post, and when I searched this one was the only real post that discussed this problem.
I did the *228 update and lost 4g, So I am going to try and get Verizon to provision, but just to add to the conversation:
Will flashing a custom rom fix this? Is Flashing back to original factory stock a fix as well? [Reading the above posts didn't make this super clear to me.]
Thanks

I just got in the same situation as you the other day and very curious if you get it resolved. On CM11m8, did *228, and then promptly lost LTE. Noticed the the PRL went from 15319 to 53481. I read somewhere else on XDA that the LTE PRL starts with 15*?
I'll just add to this that I did the *228 and couldn't get back on LTE. I was on Slim at the time and finally after a couple of weekly builds I decided to wipe everything on the next weekly that came up and my LTE returned.
woohoo, got my LTE issue fixed!
Lesson learned, do not *228 and update the PRL for a smartphone!!
Root issue was the Verizon PRL switch from from 15319 to 53481. The VZW tech support was very surprised my phone let me *228 to begin with. The system showed the phone updated the PRL to 15319 last month. Tech support level 1, reprovisioned the phone but that didnt help. Tech support level 2, re-pushed the PRL, but it didnt appear to get downloaded after 2 reboots. Next, Level 2 resubscribed the phone to the system, but that didnt work either. Next they had me boot into safe mode (learned something new today... Power button -> click and hold on Reset item and then select yes to the safe mode dialog). In safe mode however CM11m9 (I just updated last night) the com.google.androidui (or something close to it), kept crashing... so the phone was unusable. Rebooted again, back to normal mode and it was back to LTE! The PRL was back to 15319. Looks like the PRL repush from VZW eventually came through and was the solution.

Yep! this is a know issue with using *228, it will wipe your 4G. The best fix is get a new SiM card from Verizon and the re-provision should work right away.

No signal execept 911 calls

I picked up a mint verizon s3 local on a trade for some scrap phones I had. So here is my issue. I put in a sim(at&t) and got the switch to global notification but it never gets signal. Phone info shows -120dbm 99asu. Figured since it was free I would play with it and installed hyperdriver rls 16 still nothing. Took everything back to the first stock ics nothing. Currently have it on jb 4.1.1 nothing. I started to wonder if the radio was trashed so I dialed 911 with no sim in the phone and it popped up 3 bars and made the call.
Am I wrong in thinking this phone will work on US networks with a sim? Anyone ran into this problem possibly can maybe point me into a direction to get it working. The phone is clean and not blacklisted and it reads the different sims I have put in it I just can't get any signal to pull up other than an emergency call. I know there is signal my s4 is on the gsm network sitting right next to it.
Thanks in advance, I have been searching since yesterday for a solution.
****update.....Went ahead and took it to 4.1.2 stock and happened to find an old verizon sim. Phone picks up verizons network without issue. Still nothing when using the at&t sim.
It isn't working for AT&T because you haven't set up the appropriate APNs for that network. Google AT&T APNs. Reboot after making the changes. CHECK FOR TYPOS!

I thought I would at minimum show signal even without adding the apn. From everything I have read its talk ready just inserting the sim. Will look at adding apn's this morning.
Final update. Still no joy on getting it to work and I listed it for sale.
There's a thread about getting vzw s3 to work on T-Mobile, I'd imagine you'd need to follow a similar process. And FYI, all phones will call 911, sim, no sim service, no service, they'll call 911. My niece was playing with one of my sisters old, no longer connected phones. All of the sudden police and ambulances showed up. She had dialed 911, they tried to return the call unsuccessfully so they used the phones GPS info and showed up at the house.

[Q] Phone wont stay on LTE

I recently switched from straight talk to verizon's own pre paid plan after being fed up with straight talk. When I first got the service active everything was fine. I flashed the CM11 AOSP rom snapshot. I then proceeded to try and update my roaming capabilities by dialing *228 which the automated system told me was successful and ever since then my phone will not stay on LTE. It will only goto 3G. If i try to force the lte only mode then my data will work but i wont be able to make calls. I have tried going into stock recovery and resetting factory to try and clear the NV and flashing both the kitkat and lollipop RUU to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You might have damaged your Sim card by dialing *228, well I don't know about damaged, but I know Verizon phones locked to their network that uses 4G LTE Sim cards are blocked from dialing *228 because of the reasons you described.

So maybe i need to go get a new sim card then. Thats what i figured hopefully i can get to the verizon store before work and grab one.
Hey,
Were you able to get it working again?
I have the same issue. I dialed *228 like an idiot and my phone activated on 3G and won't get anything else.
I've had Verizon reset the connection on their side and I went to the store and picked up a new SIM but I still can't get LTE. It's driving me crazy. I've tried restoring to a prior backup, factory resetting the phone. Nothing gets me LTE.
