[Q] root on jb, easy way? - Asus Transformer TF700

hey there,
i read some threads, and i asked what the easiest way was to root my tf700 with 4.1.1, without needing a unlocked bootloader, i only need root!
would it be this way:
[TIP] Downgrade from JB to 0.30 works!
then i should be able to root with debugfs
and then keep rooted when update to jb
is this correct? and the bootloader won't be touched? cause i want to keep my warranty (just received the asus ) and i don't need more than root.
or is there an easier way? (without unlocking bootloader)
hope so could give me some piece of advice!

Easiest method that I am aware of is downgrade to .30, root, use voodoo root to temporarily unroot, upgrade to JB, use voodoo to restore root. Hope it works!

Be groovy if we got lucky with this.
The comment below the article say's it doesn't work at all with a Transformer Prime.
Other guys on here have done a lot of good favors finding root work-a-rounds for all of us.
Hats off to them!

I was too lazy to go that far. I downloaded the ASUS Firmware update, ran that so I could get the JB Firmaware. Then I got the TWRP recovery image and pushed it to my tablet in fastboot (Word to the wise, I had to use that weird -i 0xx50b command or whatever it was in order to get the ADB shell to recognize the tablet), rebooted to be safe, copied over the ROM I wanted to my SD, rebooted into recovery and voila! Don't know if this will work for everybody, but it worked for me ;D

[Q] How to root device on jelly bean?

Hi folks.
I've just bought an Infinity. When booting it for the time, I updated it to Jelly bean. Now I'd like to know how can I root it? Unfortunately the debugfs method does not work anymore. So am I stuck ?
Thanks.
I have the same issue!

You will have to wait for a new method to come out which may be a while. At this time if you lose root or have not rooted prior to JB you cannot get it back.

Yes, you are stuck. You will either have to develop a root method yourself or wait for someone else to do it for you unless you are willing to unlock. If you unlock, you should be able to flash alternate ROMs, etc, the sky's the limit. Be aware though, if you unlock, you will void your warranty and will not be able get OTAs. Flashing ROMs also comes with a certain amount of risk (especially w/out nvflash which you can't get since you upgraded).
Return it if you can. With the new one, Root and save with Voodoo OTA First, then run the JB update. It may be a long time before someone develops a root method for JB. The TF300 has been on JB for a while now and still no Root solution.

I think that's the best recommendation to the OP. Cause there's no telling when a native JB root solution will come. Especially since all the Devs are already rooted.
For anyone who has not applied JB yet, this is one thread you'd want to read before applying that update: Last chance to root.

i did the voodoo ota rootkeeper. it says I have root but when I try and open titanium backup, it doesn't work. any solutions?
I had an issue with the device at first with es File explorer. Had to install newer beta version of superUser and that fixed it. I have SU 3.1 installed now and all is working fine.
I found a jellybean root exploit in another thread I'll see if I can adapt it to work on the infinity. No guarantees though. I'm sure we'll be able to get this wild beast to submit once more!... eventually.

might as well try downgrading if your just going to return it anyway.

Are you using Superuser or Supersu? SuperSu is better in JB in my experience. Anyway open it and have it forget Titanium. Then open TB again and grant access.
you dont have to wait. you can downgrade to .30 update root it. and upgrade and use vooodoo OTA root keeper to root JB
Downgrade, root, then upgrade to JB again.

First, check your build number, if you have build .26 then you should make a bootloader backup with NVflash. (This is very important) before upgrade. I found the stock rooted JB with browse2ram is the best and trouble free. The only custom JB you should consider is Zeus JB, but it's not available right now. Dev is still sick.

Yes, yours is .30. NVflash bootloader backup is not working with .30 or JellyBean. Anyway you could root this without any issue, then use Voodoo OTA root keeper to backup root then ugrade to JellBean and use root keeper to restore root back on JB. If you unlock bootloader, there is no way back. Also voided your warranty. I would just root for now since I don't see any rom/kernel worth to unlock yet.
I agree with above the post. Rooting is good to have so you can use stuff like Titanium back up, Busybox, six asais controller and a few other apps. Plus rooting does not void warranty.
Until there is something you feel is a must have/need, I would wait to unlock the boot loader, such as a ROM or kernal. For me, I haven't seen that reason. I just freeze the bloat ware. I should back it up and delete it, but that's a whole different topic.
Rooting, from what I read is possible on .30. I believe the defugs method works. It's the method used on Prime (TF201). From what I read, just make sure you don't have ADB installed on your machine. It should be really easy. It was for me when I was on .26.
What did I get wrong?
Hey guys, I have the same exact TF700 as OP and I've tried miloj's rooting method to the exact letter. It says on the prompt after the whole process that I have root access, but in Root Checker it says that I do not have complete root access.
USB Debug mode: check
Unknown Sources: check
Updated ASUS driver in device manager: check
Not running ASUS sync on PC or tablet: check
What could I possibly missed? I've gone through all the relevant posts and followed every instruction but Root Checker still says I don't have root access..
Thanks for your time guys.

Clean rom is nothing but stock rom and tons of bloatware removed, I wouldn't consider this as custom rom. I agreed with you on Zeus, since it cut down I/O by trading data integrity to achieve this, but Zeus is now "history" we are on JB now, until Zeus on JB released, I won't unlock the device.

[Q] Rooting without unlocking?

I believe on the TF300 its not possible, but I am curious if it is possible on this device? I would honestly love to install custom ROMs, but after spending an hour on the phone with squaretrade today if I purchased a warranty through them, unlocking would void their warranty as well, so I would really hate to spend $450 and lose all hope of getting it serviced if it breaks a week later.
Thanks for the help guys, currently stuck if I want to spend the extra $150 on this or just keep my TF300. I mainly want to use it as a game machine and sadly need to root to use a controller (I don't have the dock).
Thanks!
Edit: This is guessing that the device will come with JB rom, I see it can be rooted unlocked with ICS.
You can root without having to be unlocked, yes.You need to be sure that you're NOT on JB, though. Firmware .30 or earlier on ICS can be rooted with the debugfs method listed on this forum. You will lose root once you upgrade to JB again, though. Unless you use OTA Rootkeeper to backup the root. There is currently no way to root the tablet on JB without being unlocked or downgrading.

I did read about that and was rather happy to see it. Then its just a matter of hoping mine comes with the right firmware. Just curious as i've never had to do it before. Is it easy to unroot if it is needed to be sent in for repair? I know SuperSU has an option that removes root files to switch superuser apps, just not sure if thats thorough enough.
Thanks!
Yes, unrooting is fairly easy. You can always reset it using the stock recovery. I don't actually think you will have to unroot it, though. You'll lose your warranty if you unlock the bootloader, not if you just root, afaik.

[Q] What to do with brand new TF700T with ICS 4.0.3

Hello,
Bit confused what to do. I have brand new TF700T ICS 4.0.3 and I think I would benefit with rooted device. But what to do first? Update to JB and then root or root and update? I read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833212 so I would like to use the NvFlash before I start flashing... Is there any catch?

You first have to decide if you want to void your manufacturer warranty by unlocking the boot loader (so that you can install custom ROMs). You do not need to unlock the boot loader if you only want to root it.
However, once you upgrade to JellyBean, you won't be able to install NVFlash any more, so if you are planning to unlock it in the near future, you should seriously consider doing it now, and then install NVFlash.
If you decide to unlock, there's no problem in rooting it afterwards. If you decide NOT to unlock, but still want to root, you should do so BEFORE you upgrade to JellyBean, as there's currently no way to root a JellyBean installation on the TF700 (if you install JellyBean without root, you'll have to downgrade to ICS to root, and then upgrade to JellyBean again).
As you can see, it all depends on what you want to do with your device - now and in the future. There's no way to know if it'll be possible in the future to install NVFlash on a JB installation, but once you have installed JB, you CANNOT install NVFlash - not even if you roll back to ICS. So you have to decide if you want NVFlash or not, and if so, you need to unlock it while on ICS and proceed from there.
If you want to keep the locked bootloader and warranty: First, root it. Look for the tutorial here in the Forum, it's very easy, should be something like "Root with debugfs".
Then, download OTA Rootkeeper from the Market (Google Play). Use it to protect your root.
Afterwards, you can either try the normal OTA Update (Didn't work for me, too big of a jump), or follow the following tutorial to update from one revision to the next. (So you've gotta update around 4-5 times in total to get to the newest JB revision).

So I see.
Option 1) Rooted only and keep warranty - can't flash it.
Option 2) Root and unlock, lost warranty but be able to flash it. For this I need unlock the bootloader. And I would need to unlock to bootloader to install NvFlash, is it right?
What will be your recommendation? Do I need to flash it? The use would be recreational (internet/video/games) and travel laptop.

I personally didn't flash mine, at the moment I just don't need it. Should be fine for you to, why don't you try root & locked bootloader first?
You can always unlock the bootloader later on, but you can't "relock" it

Any manufacturing problems with it?
How familiar with the ins-outs of rooting\flashing are you?
If relatively new read then read some more.
The chances of a brick are low...then again you never know for sure.
Good luck...

Yes, per OTA
Strange. Did you try the update files from the thread I linked previously? (in my first post) The OTA never worked for me, so I used those.

Didn't need to because the OTA came on always automatically as soon as I rebooted. So I let it run.
I think I'm doing something wrong with the OTA Rootkeeper because it will not give me option to temp un-root...
Do you have Superuser installed? If not, try to install it from the Market, it will show you if you really got root.
From my perspective it sounds like you don't actually have root or just no application to control root.

[Q] Root on Jelly bean

Hi everyone,
I was browsing through the TF700 forums but i can't seem to find how to root my Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T on Jelly Bean 4.1.1 build JRO03C.WW_epad-10.4.4.23-20121127, all i managed to find was how to root it on ICS and some other things that required rooting to be done or programs working only for ICS??
Can someone give me steps to easily and safely root that build?
Thanks a lot!

There is currently no way to root the TF700 on JB, but you can downgrade to ICS, get root, use OTA Rootkeeper, and upgrade to JB using dlpkgfile files. Use the search function, there is a thread that explains the details how to do it.

You can't root using this method. This method is only for unlocked device where you use fastboot to flash custom recovery (TWRP) then use twrp to gain root either through flashing SuperSu or custom rom. If you device is locked, you need to DOWNGRADE back to ICS version .30 (if you already upgraded to JB) then follow this to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706588
After rooted on ICS, then install SuperSU and Voodoo OTA Root Keeper, then run SuperSU, then OTA Root Keeper and save your root, then upgrade to JB, then restore root using OTA Root Kepper.

Ok, so you do absolutely NEED to unlock the device through the Asus unlock tool? The only thing that I am worried about is the fact that as soon as I use the unlock tool that Asus basically has me by my manhood and I couldn't undo it if I really needed to. Are there any other ways to unlock the TF700? Or are there any ways to gain root without unlocking first?

Yes, you can root without unlocking, but root will not help you much with the Asus I/O performance issue. If you don't want to unlock, just downgrade back to ICS (this is the only way to root without unlocking). The only downside with unlocking is it will void your warranty, but the upside is huge.

So it seems that to gain better performance unlocking is a must? Could I fix the I/O issues by skipping the unlock process, gaining root, and then flashing a custom ROM? Or is unlocking the only way? If so, why does unlocking allow us to fix the I/O issue/just fix it??

Yes, Unlocking is not fixing I/O issue, but it allows you to flash custom rom and kernel or data2sd mod, which eliminated I/O issue to none noticable. There is NO WAY to flash custom rom WITHOUT unlocking. The most with just root is you able to install browser2ram which help only with your browser (stock/chrome).
