Hello everyone,
I have a fairly new HTC One S z520e (2weeks old), running stock 4.0.4 update, no root etc yet.
Lately I am experiencing problems with the capacitive buttons acting like crazy, I remember before owning the phone that I had read some cases that users had similar problems but did not find the threads.
While typing, suddenly all three buttons start acting weird without getting pressed and sometimes the buttons do not work at all. In some cases if I switch off-on the screen sometimes it gets fixed, but most of the time it doesn't and I have to wait a long time to get it to work as it should again, or restart the phone.
I sometimes had this issue with my HTC Desire and typing, but after I cleaned the screen it worked immediately, but this does not happen in this case.
It might be a static electricity issue but I am still not sure.
I have a screen protector and I also thought that this might be the cause, since when I removed the protector from my Desire I never had this problem again.
Is it a software bug or hardware flaw?
Do any of you experience the same issue and have any solution??
Thanx in advance,
T.
Warranty replacement. If you aren't rooted not much you can do. If its that new I wouldn't tolerate it. Get a new one

I wish it was that easy. In my country I can only find the z560e and I was lucky enough to find from an independent dealer a z520e, so if I try to get it replaced in warranty I am sure that I will get back a z560.

I want to try and establish the extent of this problem. Is everyone getting it eventually or should I return the phone? Please do not reply if you have had the phone for a day and not had the problem. It seems to only appear after a few days. It took 4 days for it to happen to me.
Having the exact same problem. It's when you're trying to unlock it while not in your hand. Really annoying. Also couldn't answer a call once when I had it in my pocket before, I assume the latter had something to do with heat, as it was pretty hot that day.
Anyone else?
Iv had mine since May 19th . I had loads of problems and had my first sensation replaced after just a few days. My second sensation had some memory problems till I did a factory reset and now its spot on. But I have never had any unlock problems.

I've had my sensation for two weeks now... I have had no problems at all with it. It's going great for me so far! (touch wood)
No problems at all with my sensation (since 26th of May)
I have had mine since 19th too and no problems. Other than odd signal drops sometimes

Think I may return mine then. Just thought the problem may be inevitable but it looks like it might not.
Quick question for those with the screen problem... Do you have a plastic case, one of those that sit round the back cover? Have you also tried cleaning with a microfibre or other such cloth?
No case or anything, stock ROM. A reset has got rid of it for the moment but for other people it seems like it just comes back again and gets worse. Screen is clean. Has been cleaned just to check. Reset fix and delayed onset suggests a hardware issue to me.
Got mine on 20th May. Not a single problem at all. Used it already also during a trip abroad. Great handset, the best I have ever had! (The only issue is the locked bootloader which makes it impossible to Root and thus not able to use Mybackup Pro and some more apps)
Question for those who have not had the problem. Do you reboot your phone often (full power off). It occured to me that the reason some people may not have seen the problem is because it is rebooted (which seems to help) before it occurs. If you have had your phone on without a reboot for a week I think it is safe to say your phone is not effected.
+1 to having nothing but reception now and again

My current up time is 347 hours, according to battery stats. That's about 2 weeks. Before that, it was about a week. My phone has never crashed or rebooted by itself. I only rebooted because I ran out of battery.
more than 2 weeks now..now problems whats so ever with the screen or the lock !
My Sensation's touchscreen developed issues after about a week. The problem affects not only the lockscreen but also the scrolling in the application drawer (and elsewhere) and typing.
Changing the lock screen to anything that loads from the microsd seems to slow it down or render it unresponsive. Ie.. the photo album lock screen. Micro SD may be too slow or faulty.

It only happened to me once, but I was using an external battery charger that also had a usb port on it for charging the phone at the same time. It was for my Mytouch slide, and only if the phone wasn't in my hand. Using the charger I got with the phone I have yet to have the issue even when it wasn't in my hand.
Do the people that have this issue also have the wobbly screen issue where if you press the left or right side of the screen it compresses a little bit then bounces back?
I have just replaced my digitizer (was dust under the screen and also a scratch on the digitizer itself, along with the fact I damaged it removing the sticky tape) and the whole screen is almost completely unresponsive. Brand new, but wont work fully until I touch the screen for a bit or give it time to sit after activating the lockscreen.
Once it is through it's "warmup" the screen works flawlessly. It just acts like a slug before that... Also rendering the quick launch lock screen completely worthless. Anyone have any ideas what could be the culprit?

I too replaced a broken screen on my sensation, and i am experiencing the exact same problem as you. Only for me it's only the lower left part of the screen that 'takes time to warm up'.
Did you find any solution?
Not yet. I have another digitizer on order, and fingers are crossed. If not, ill be biting the bullet and waiting for the nexus prime. I have this feeling that it is something other than the digitizer which is extremely sensitive. If people are claiming responsiveness issues after a week or two of use, and while on their sixth or seventh sensation... It sounds like something is slowly deteriorating or building up.

I don't think it's the digitizer either, probably something else ont he phone. However i don't think it is the same problem as everybody else is having, since they experience their screen being unresponsive in general rather than just after turning on.
I am though going to try some of the fixes suggested, i.e. improve the grounding by placing some aluminum foil under the cover and see if it helps.
What does "turning on" mean? Cold boot up? If so, then the CPU on the phone will be busy doing stuff. If you mean waking up from sleep, then that's another problem.
for me it's both cases, both when booting the phone and just when turning the screen back on. What's strange is that it is only the lower part of the screen that's frozen :-S after 10-20 seconds it suddenly springs back to life just as nothing had happened and works flawlessly until i turn the screen of. Then i see the exact same problem again.
I also noticed now that the screen also freezes after calling somebody and when you hang up :-0 I really don't know what is wrong with the phone!
If the phone is unsecured (never sleeps) it will work flawlessly. As soon as I click the top button to secure the screen, or take a phone call, once I try to unlock/ use the screen again... The problem comes back. The left side of the screen is the most responsive, usually moving my finger around for about five or ten seconds will restore full sensitvity. I received a new digitizer in the mail, just waiting on tape. Interesting note; they are different digitizers. The original was HTC/ tmobile brand while the replacement is simply HTC. The ribbon cable also reads different. My original: pyd v1.0, sw-10 94v-0, e3082521117. The new one reads: pyd v1.0, e21954-1, ruICACichia, 94v-0 1112. The current digitizer replacement is also a standard HTC label... I wonder if it is because it isn't a specific model replacement.

Alright so i tried doing all the fixes related to the grounding issue, and i didn't affect anything at all.
I'm going back to the repair shop today (have a three months warranty) to tell them to have a look at it again and see if they can fix the issue. Maybe they have a spare digitizer they could try instead of my current one. I will let you know if anything helps!
Sounds good. I am betting its either an incorrect digitizer for the model of phone (us/eu/whatever) improper mounting or damage, or just planetary alignment or something equally stupid. I'm really hoping someone figures out this problem... It is frustrating to spend more time figuring out how to fix a phone than you actually do using it.

True, had i known from the start i would probably just have bought a new phone, rather than spend on the money on getting the screen replaced :-S
Well, I replaced the digitizer for a second time. Seems to be the same thing so far. Different initial responsiveness spot (looks like the right side might be more sensitive now) but I didn't have high hopes. I wonder what it could be...

So i went back to the repair shop and got it fixed. I guess they weren't in the mood for scientific inquiry, because they simply disassembled the phone and installed a new digitizer. After that everything is working fine, altough i will never know if it was the digitizer itself or some faulty wiring somewhere :-S
Worked for me
I have had exactly the same problem you all have experienced. The first digitizer I ordered from a company on e-bay gave me huge problems at the unlock screen. Bought a new one from skalshop and it works perfectly. I even tried it without tape to make sure it worked before I glued the thing together and it worked perfect.
I dropped my Sensation while on vacation in Key West. I arrived home and bought an HTC OEM digitizer. It came, I put it in and now when I unlock the phone the screen lags for 5-10 seconds and then it is perfectly normal. It will lag that long also if a call comes in. Hard to answer it sometimes. But then it is fine until the next time I shut off the screen and put it back on. If I leave my display on all the time it is fine. Only coming back from sleep. I am in IT, A+, Net+, Sec+ and MCSA certified. So no problem with changing it, it went fine. Any idea what it could be?
You sure it's OEM. I think you bought ebay stuff that is from china. You get what you pay for. I would try to flash another ROM just to be sure.
Also download z-devicetest from the market and check out the screen specs.

I replaced my digitizer and I currently get incredibly annoying unresponsiveness every time I unlock the screen. Very frustrating. Also, it seems to only have zero response on the right side. The left side (with the phone quick launch) will move after fidgeting with it for a second, and then the rest of the screen will follow suit.

sounds like the EXACT problem i had with an TMOUS 1024mb HD2, replaced digi with the one from a EU 512mb HD2
its a hardware conflict between varying models, and these hardware revisions may have spilled into HTC's latest gen of devices
So a few months ago I dropped my phone and it landed face down. Cracked the screen (which sucks because I even had a case on it) and since then the vibrate function on the phone comes and goes. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it does work it's usually very weak. It has to be a hardware problem of course.. I've even restored my phone a few times since the incident and nothing has changed. But what would I replace to fix it? I'm about to replace the glass digitizer so I figured I'd do both things at once but I can't find a vibrate motor or anything related to it for this phone. Is it possible when I dropped my phone it caused a connection to my motherboard to loosen that is causing this?
Either like you said, the connection is loose or the motor just died out.
I'd say when you take apart the phone, test the motor out with a battery. A simple negative and positive wire connection should do.
I don't think the motor is connected to the mainboard instead has contacts to the board where it draws its power from. Then again, that's back when I used to take apart iPhones. It could be different.

I have same problem after drop, no vibration. I sent for warranty and they fixed it. They told the the problem was just software issues, not hardware.
I try to reflash a few time but don't solve the vibration issues, don't know how they solve this.

I would do the same, but I have to remove the warranty stickers to replace the digitizer and I'm sure they'd deny me warranty service with a cracked screen. Did you tell them that you had dropped it?

I bought my sensation XE off ebay last week and it arrived with no vibration at all. tried loads of settings and wiped the phone and started again but nothing worked. So i was about to tell the ebay seller that i was sending back becuase it wasnt working correctly.
but before i did that i read around on various forums and found that a few people had, had this problem from new with their sensations. i read quite a few responses saying they had dropped their phone by accident and the vibration started working again for them. So i sat on my floor and dropped it repeatedly a few times from about a foot (30cm) off the ground - and heypresto... it works now!!!!!
I havent accepted it might stop again but i guess ill just drop it again a couple of times if it stops again.

I took that back cover off and lightly banged my phone against my knee a few times and it started working again and was working very strong for a few minutes. I guess I'll just deal with it. Does anyone know if this will work with my phone? It's a T-mobile Sensation manufactured 5-31-11. I don't know how to find the model number to see if it's compatible but I've heard if you don't get the right one specifically for the T-mobile version of the Pyramid you'll run into problems. Hi guys,
my DS did some strange stuff lately. It began with the screen staying black when I woke it up (hardware buttons did turn on and touchscreen also worked). I thought it was a software issue, because after a few on and offs the screen usually worked again. Also, this never happened when the phone was charging.
But a few days ago the screen never turned back on again, even when charging. I got a new battery but still no change. It won't even turn on when booting or when going to fastboot/ hboot.
Does anyone have an idea what is broken? I think my best guess is to have a look at these other screen replacement threads, but I wanted to ask first because the screen seemed to have gradually become broken, which confuses me. I didn't think something like that was even possible. Also, I can't return it since I bought it used and in Germany (DS is USA exclusive).
Thanks for help
Most certainly hardware as it is black when in bootloader and ROM. Best guess is the LCD but could also be the main flex the likelyhood of any thin else is fairly small.
Do read up on the screen replacement threads as this phone is one pain in the ass, you also need to be aware of what LCD to buy as there were different ones and they are not compatible.

Thanks for the tips. Screen might be still ok since it went out gradually, could be a defective contact since it also went on and off randomly. But I guess there is no way to only replace this contact, too complicated to find out... I will see.
Yeah, I had a look at these threads already, thank you
I had a program that I moved to the sd card that would cause the screen not to come on and would have to do a battery pull. When I moved the app back to the phone, the problem stopped.
(Walgreens app)
It has happened again since, so it may be another app I have to track down. Or I may be looking at faulty screen trouble too.
Sent from my MyTouch 4G Slide using Tapatalk 2
even if an app on sd were the cause of this it certainly couldnt make the screen blackout while in recovery and bootloader mode. to the best of my knowledge it has to be a hardware fault if screen wont turn on in bootloader... but well ive been proven wrong in the past
Well since I had problems with the screen turning off before when it did work in recovery, there might be a connection to daswerk's case. However I kept all my apps on the internal SSD and do remember checking it. Also, my screen turned back on sooner or later or when I played around with the keyboard.
However later it was off even in recovery mode. I did disassemble my DS lately (and broke my screen like seemingly everyone else hehe) and am now waiting for my new LCD screen to arrive in Germany from the states haha. Shipping costs were higher than LCD costs, d'oh! Thanks again demkantor, you've been helping me indirectly with your posts in the other threads as well
So guys, screen arrived, reassembled my phone, switched it on aaand... black screen.
Graphic chip or motherboard may be broken. I'm thinking about a loose connection because screen turned off once in a while before it never got back on. I found a user by coincidence here on xda who reported the same problem.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Don't want to forsake my dearly loved DS :'(
Next most likely would be main flex cable

Are there other possibilities as well? I'm thinking about getting a whole replacement set so I can try everything shipping costs are high since I live in germany hmmf
btw, digitizer/ touchscreen doesn't seem to work either, is this another sign that main flex cable is the prolem?
There are always more possiblities I was just letting you know what I would replace next as the most likley cause.
Having multiple phones to exchange parts is a good idea and really about the only way to test different components
And yes have no digitizer working can be a sign of a bad flex as well
