Well well well we just found out all your data is going to an Amazon server if you updated to the new 2.3.4 EVO and Sensation users. How long you use an app, What app you are using, The fact that you are rooted, the location you are using it from etc etc (without QIC) is being uploaded to an Amazon server un-encrypted. How's that for security? However thanks to Synergy team developer TrevE users of Synergy and the upcoming Eternity ROM from Virus will be secure against this obvious infringement of your privacy. What is HTC up to? And furthermore what other manufacturers are using similar methods? One thing Trev pointed out was your warranty can be voided immediately. They know you are rooted! The repercussions of this are astounding and frankly I am proud to be breaking this story with all of the work I have done here recently speaking out when I find are data being wrongly horded and used in nefarious ways. Kudos to TrevE and Virus for showing me this and helping the community find a way to put a stop to it. This is an ongoing game people and it is the aftermarket guys like Team Synergy and even journalist like myself who are a pretty good line of defense when crap like this comes up. They have your IMEI they know your location from the cell towers in hex and they know you are rooted. The best way to defend yourself is by rooting and flashing these guys ROMS period and that's a win win. Top of the line performance and defense against heinous invasion of your privacy.
for technical details including the nefarious code you can go HERE. The user behavior logs and other info are right in the thread of our sister site InfectedROM.com
The Synergy team and Revolution for the win... oh and when your using Synergy ROM and Eternity ROM this is what HTC will see..... Beat By Team Synergy. Jokes on them. I'm certainly laughing.

The reason it's going to Amazon is because HTC has servers with Amazon obviously... Damn this is a dumb, FUD-spreading, post.

I dont think so...I am curious to know also....What are they doing with this data that they have NOT asked us to collect.
I think the op is going way overboard assuming these STATISTICS are being used " nefariously " sure, point it out, bit don't start throwing out accusations without evidence that harmful acts are being perpetrated and scaring the community into a state of paranoia.
I think the OP just copied and pasted the article, so no need to blame him.
And yea, the way the article is written just makes it seem like a rant and not very credible...
dear Op,
please tell us about the services activated under account and sync. then disabled them all and see, how like magic that traffic then is gone...
LOL. This is really written in such a sensational way that it's pretty funny that I really am fifty fifty believing this post. It's like the posts on the web that mention gain six pack ABS in six weeks no exercise. Ah well. Good thing I'm rooted and failed the update.

OK, I'm calling BS, or at the very least calling it inaccurate. If you look up those IPs, they belong to amazonaws.com. If you look this up, you get Amazon Web Services. It's basically a bunch of cloud/database services they offer, for people and other companies to utilize. So while it may go to an Amazon server, it is most likely not actually going to Amazon. It is still just HTC, nothing different, just a different server. Also, WHO THE HELL CARES? It's not like it is constantly sending this data all the time. In fact, I'd be willing to bet this only gets sent when you actually submit one of those 'Tell HTC' forms that show up sometimes.
Well, one more spying us is not a problem
What an interesting post. Is there any kind of independent watchdog group who goes over all the code in these roms to see what is actually going on? I assume it's all open source, so they can't really hide what they're doing. How it works in the real world, however, I don't know.

I don't necessarily believe it either but I wonder if you guys even clicked on the link because there's actually a bunch of source there, and explanations of what happens when you delete certain files that are harvesting info, and the source code that was used to "defeat" the info harvesting behaviors. I think this is interesting at the very least, if not true even if it was definitely presented in a sensational way.
I don't particularly care WHERE the data is going, I want to know WHY it's being collected in the first place, especially if it is not vital to the functioning of our mobile devices, which it seems pretty clear to all of us, it isn't. Even if YOU don't care about your info and data being harvested by google, some of us do and many of us find it very disconcerting.
Also, a guy with 14 posts trolling and asking where "XDA is heading" am I the only one that appreciates how ridiculous that is?

Well, he's just offering a service. I don't see why we should blame him. I'm the kind of hacker interested in tweaking my phone. I'm sure other people don't care.
In other field (cooking for example), I'm sure I'd be considered as a lazy bastard. I bet many people around here are in the exact same situation.
In economics, we call that preferences and we take those as data, we don't judge them. Let them be free.

The problem is he is making money off of work that is not his. This right here is the main reason developers are starting to keep things to themselfs and select freinds and not releasing it to the public.
Guys when you see something like this just report it to the site.

This is pretty much the same as people paying to get their PSPs, DSes, PS3s, Xboxes or anything else, hacked/modified. He's not selling the mods and roms, he's just selling his service. I feel that it's okay.
This reminds me of people who sell instructions with rooting tools or xbox, wii, psp mod files that they have found online for free but this guy isn't actually selling the free software he made sure he mentioned you are buying his services which would be rooting and hooking up the phones for lazy asses who don't want to take the few extra minutes to google the stuff they need (which I think is half the fun; getting to know about my phone and seeing it do stuff that the manufacturer says can't be done...) but anyway it's their money if they want to pay for something that can be easily done I guess that's on them. BUT I would think better of the seller if these tools he is using were developed by him instead of using the tools that other developers had put alot of time and work into and the developers themselves give it away because that's what they love to do and aren't getting a dime for all of the work they've done and then the help they freely give when answering our questions over and over for people like him to turn around and profit off of their hard work that they aren't even profiting off of. It makes me so grateful that most people are not like this seller. He really is profiting off of other people's hard work that he got for free which is totally greedy and all of that kind of stuff.
Thank you to all of our devs who put alot of time into helping us make our phones beyond awsome!
I was thinking of sending him a message and ask him which rom and tools does he use or if would he use or a screenshot for a specific phone just to be nosy.

Yeah well it doesn't fly here. You use the work of others and charge for it and things happen. One should never steal a hackers work lol
And a great example of why some of the greatest mods are no longer posted publicly and only shared privately between trusted developers.
As far as I know, developers usually allow such uses. I'm sure they are well aware of the possibilties offered by their licences. I personnaly use a BSD licence for most of my programs and encourage those behaviors.

No I don't personally. There is a big difference. They are not using someone else hardworking that is given away for free. There are rules you agree to when you join the site. And that includes asking to use the work of others. And no developer will allow someone to make money off of a tool they give away for free
the ONLY way i could see what he is doing as ok is if he was donating a portion of the profits to the devs of the work he uses.

I know what it means. Been doing this for many years. You should learn what respect is. That is what developers deserve and it is not given when you steal their free software to charge for.
In the end this has been covered many times. If someone is charging for the work of others then report them and they will be banned from here. As for other sites just report them as these devices are released with free licences charging for them is illegal.

I am willing to give a reward of a bonafide Windows 8 Pro x86/x64 retail license to the person who successfully solves the problem of getting the G2X Qualcomm mdm6600 radio/modem fully working with the CM10.1 or stock LG ICS kernel or the kernel that is being worked on by AdamPK, Mazout360, etc. If I determine that more than one person has made a significant contribution to achieving that, I will give the same reward to them too. But, before I make that official, I want opinions about doing that.
Edit:
The code required to achieve success must be fully documented and publicly available to enable others to use it successfully too.
UPDATE
The poll ended overwhelmingly in favour of me rewarding development which gets the Qualcomm mdm6600 modem/radio working fully with an ICS/CM9/JB/CM10.1 ROM and Kernel.
There's no expectation or obligation of anyone to accept the reward of a bonafide Windows 8 Pro x86/x64 license for accomplishing the development goal.
The reward will be awarded after the goal is accomplished which is proven by the full/complete operation of the G2X and its Qualcomm mdm6600 radio/modem with an ICS/CM9/JB/CM10.1 ROM and Kernel and the submission, to me, of documentation of the method used, in the form of fully commented source code which can be understood by a person competent in the programming language used so that it can be used for verification and for further development.
If there is a dispute as to who ultimately accomplished the goal of getting the Qualcomm mdm6600 modem/radio working fully with an ICS/CM9/JB/CM10.1 ROM and Kernel, it will be resolved by examination of relevant documentation which I will use to determine the reward recipient(s). If more than one person, determined by me exclusively, contributed substantially to achieving the goal, each of those persons will be eligible to receive the same reward. If anyone who is eligible to receive the reward doesn't want it they may forego receiving it.

I suppose that, if the developer is already doing it, but they don't have a G2X such as tonyp, they would welcome getting one to enable them to do their development much more easily. I think tonyp well deserves getting a G2X for his effort. I don't know about anyone else who doesn't have a G2X who is contributing as much as he has and still is. Wouldn't it be helpful to ask him and, if he wants one, easiest to donate to him directly so that he can buy the phone? I am certain that, if that happened, he would be very pleased.
Unfortunately you can't count me in. I'm lacking the time and probably kernel knowledge to do that.
You need someone who got deep Linux kernel experience and skills.
Btw, offering someone like that a windows license is a little strange
(and just to brag about it: I got plenty of free win 8 licenses thanks to Microsoft MSDN aa ).
A potential dev has to have the phone. It won't work without one, that would take way more time.
The problem with donating a phone upfront is that it introduces expectations. If the dev fails it's always a bad feeling for both sides, that's why there are many devs who don't really like receiving phones.

Offering a Windows 8 license isn't that strange even in the Android/Linux community as many use Windows for some purposes that Android/Linux don't fulfil. The reward wouldn't be given until it was "earned". (And, also, but not to brag about it, I was also a member of MSDNAA but I've retired from that now.)
Kernel development/hacking is very difficult so anyone who would do it would have to have the phone anyway so getting the phone one already owns isn't an incentive. You're correct about giving a phone upfront implies that there is the expectation of a beneficial payback to whomever donates the phone which is a good reason not to give one and not to want one.
I am still committed to the reward I am considering offering. So far, the majority are in favour of it. When the poll is over, I will do what the majority wants.
We'd probably need some dev who already works for LG or some other company to get the radio working.. or as stated before, some who understands android coding extremely well such.

I read somewhere that no money exchanged hands, and it's a win-win for each company. I have no problem with KitKats. Google is pretty much the king of advertising giants, so saying they've "Sold out" seems kind of improper for a company that makes most of their money through advertisements. Advertising is the only reason we ever saw android come to life, cause without it, Google would not have existed. Try not to let it get to you. It's just a candy bar. I seriously doubt KitKat will have any major influence on how Google conducts its policies. I bet the name KitKat came up during a meeting and they just all instantly liked it.
Now if we start having forced KitKat home screens, I'll be right there with you against it.
I can accept that, and maybe sell-out was a bit strong. I guess I was confused over it all. It didnt bother me at first, but working at 7-11, I do alot of stocking, and all the new Kit Kat bars are pushing on the new Android version. Maybe it was just a good advertising play for both parties, but if I start seeing Andy doing the KitKat jingle, Ill go back to my Samsung Rant haha. Thanks for the insight.

That indeed is theft. Such a pointless thread, and such a pointless question. I hope you can reflect on your thoughts that devs put allot of time to publish their work and you guys take advantage of this.
Imagine someone came to your house, forged your car key and drove off. You run to them and go. What are you doing. The person stealing your car can say "I love doing this, I do it all the time, I just can't quit". That would suck wouldn't it.

You are a bad and evil person for even asking such questions. Jk jk.
I'm against stealing apps....but I may be even more against developers that try to milk their clientele for as much money as possible via in-app purchases. Charge a fair flat rate for a game and get rid of the annoying advertisements bugging people to make in-app purchases. Personally, I will never pay for any sort of in-app purchase but have no problem paying a few bucks for a quality app that doesn't have ads and doesn't prevent you from using the app properly if you don't continuously make in-app purchases.
That's my two cents.
What the hell man. No. There is no penalty... It is against the privacy act to find out where people live from Ip addresses. So there will be no real life penalty. But btw, I've seen my friend use it (he stopped). Btw u get insta-banned from play store until u turn it off. If Google catches u UR google account will be terminated/disabled. Still you should stop

I'm sorry if I hurt you or anybody else with this thread.
i've got that problem too.. i try to use another account but no connection
try to stop freedom before you uninstall freedom app..
" The issue arises when you Uninstall Freedom without "Stopping The Service". As soon provide Root Privileges to Freedom It creates "Google Play Odex" File which is Modded by Freedom (The proper way to uninstall is to Stop Freedom Service by its App and then Uninstall It). Now when you happen to uninstall freedom without Stopping The Service, It does not remove the Modded Odex File and causes multiple google play issues to fix these issue what you need is. "

This discussion is about a software which let's you obtains content which "costs" for "free". I believe this shouldn't be discussed on XDA.

you can use freedom.. that's fine.. you won't get cought
but some apps have better security features that verifies payment and freedom can't be run with them.. like whatsapp...
i think as long as you use it with games, it's no harm.. like who spends money on games
sorry i know this advice might be hurting to developers and some other fellow members but that is what i feel.... i am reay to buy a app but not a game
free in app apps
Freedom app doesn't work with online games so if you use it your safe because your not making a lose to any company it just like removes ads it doesn't ha cm their servers or anything
hi
u can use it for games only..
not for quality app that actuallyusefull for phone and devloper had spent some quality time on it...
devloper shld get their reward...
