I've had my Nexus S for over 8.5 months now. (since February) I've always loved the phone and was glad that it received the recent jelly bean update.
However recently, my phone is just plain dying. Ever since last week, I've been experiencing frequent freezing when browsing or on instagram etc. It's happened 3 times in the past 5 days. Could it be an app or process that's causing this? I'm not sure.
Another problem I've been facing, (the most annoying of all) is my power button. Yesterday, the power button started to die. I click on the power button to put my phone in standby and bam, suddenly it doesn't work. I'm not sure if some dust could be stuck in there or something. Sometimes when I press it to put my phone on standby, it asks me to turn off my phone, as if I had done a long hold. Strange. The only way to fix the problem is by clicking the power button repeatedly (about 15 times) and then it works again for a while.
One more problem... My phone screen becomes completely useless in one small area of the screen. The only way to get rid the problem is to leave the screen alone for 10 seconds or click the power button on and off.
Now here's the deal. I don't know what to do. Should I send it in for repair and be 'phoneless' for a month? I have not tried a full wipe, and would rather not. I don't think it would change the problem. I need your opinion? Is anyone have the same issues as me?
I'm very stuck, and have no clue what to do.
Seriously...if you have hardware issues you should send it to warranty.
Try the wipe data first you should wipe it and format the "sdcard" anyway before send it to repair.
The power button in the Nexus is the small clicky type that have the tendency to go bad. For the app freezing issues, it maybe time to do a complete wipe and upgrade to 4.1.2. I'm running SlimBean and its extremely smooth.
Use warranty if you have it, or it might be time to upgrade to a newer Nexus.

A broken screen is pretty expensive, but I think Samsung is pretty nice with warranty! I sent my Nexus S with water damage, (it was dried up, but it didn't boot anymore ) and it got repaired for free! I was in my warranty limit btw

Help! I took the phone out of my pocket and it won't turn on. Tried pulling the battery. Plugging into wall charger does not light up the LED. Tried holding down power button, holding down volume button and then press power button. No response... Any other suggestions?
Has my phone died? I only got it on Friday, and is all stock. Have not rooted, never dropped or wet the phone. This is not good.
At least it's brand new and you can get another. Sorry man
Take it back and get a replacement

Yeah, I might have to take it back for replacement. This is not good... I hope it's just an isolated incident. Usually with an iPhone or Captivate, pretty easy to reset and bring back to life... Now I'd be scared to root and flash ROMs in the future if so easy to die.

Just got it exchanged for a brand new phone. The Costco cell booth guy couldn't get it started either. Hopefully won't happen again.

Any new phone would be covered in the OP's case as it's within the return window and warranted by the mfgr. Insurance wouldn't need to be used.
Strange, hope it doesn't happen again!
i haven't had any issues with mine. sounds like a defective product from the box. glad you got it taken care of.

My girlfriend bought this phone last night after i hyped it up cuz i have the evo. Anyway she got it home let it fully charge we went to use it and the screen wouldn't come on but if you held it to the light you could see all the capacitve dots (don't know if thats what they are) in the screen and you could see the clock and icons almost as if the screen was on without the backlight. so we had to pull the battery it worked for a about 15 minutes while i showed her stuff and when i went to log into the market i got a "force close" error and the htc splash screen came up and then it kinda did an awkward boot loop thing. it wouldnt stop so i pulled the battery again and now it is dead just like the OP phone no charging lights anything. i've read around the net a little bit and it don't sound like an isolated thing. i'm taking her phone back today but i don't know if i should have her stay with that htc or go toward the xperia that she was eye-ing up. sorry for the 5 page story
I dont know it it is a software issue to what. Last night I put my phone in my pocket. I pulled it out and the screen was a frozen white noise image. I dont know it my phone is locked up cause I used the revolution rom or the screen went bad. Any ideas?
I will try to add a phone. I currently am using my old pantech c300 due to lack of back up phones.

Before I offer any advice, what have you done so far to try and remedy this (i.e. battery pull, reformat phone, bang it on a desk...)? I just need to know what you've done before I try and offer you the same solution...
WHat I have tried
I have currently tried battery pull. Restore via power/volume down. I just tried to restart again for giggle. my bt headset did say phone 2 connected.
currently this is what the screen looks like,.
You can just text me with advice if it would be easier. thanks again.
Where you overclockign at all? GPU,CPU or OV~UV gpu failure could do that
No overclocking I know of. Heck I'd stock if I could get it back

I'm not sure exactly how this applies to HTC phones, but for Samsung phones, the 3-button boot into recovery usually clears these kinds of issues right up!
Once you get into recovery, we clear data, cache and dalvik cache, potentially restoring your phone back to stock condition. Yes, you lose all your stuff, but whatever was causing the malfunction is usually gone at that point. There's a possibility it could just be how your ROM was interacting with your lovely manufactured equipment (YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary, meaning not all phones are built the same so what works for some may not work for others due to the small differences in every manufactured part...)
Now as far as your screen goes, did you drop it or anything like that? Do you think this was physically damaged while in your pocket at all? Does it get pretty hot when in your pockets or was it hot this time when you pulled it out?
Not hot. It wont go into boot loader

I followed this. Several time. I changed batteries. changed sd card. and left the battery out for 30. Still not working.
1. Remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, then reinsert the battery.
2. Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
3. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button.
4. Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press the POWER button."

It was found out to be the screen. I had a friend mess with it and he said it just came back on. he made it stock again and it goes out Monday for warranty. I gotta pay for shipping but its alot cheaper than a new phone.
Interesting. Who manufactured the screen? There seem to be a lot of issues with the Sensations display, it would be cool if we could isolate it to one of the two manufacturers.
Might want to change your title to reflect "[SOLVED]" somewhere in it, also.
Sorry I couldn't help more, but hardware isn't my thing

When you say he messed with it, what exactly did he do?
I quoted wdhat he said. sorry for the vague wording. I believe he took the back off and suspended it upside down from teh back for an hour then restarted it 15 times and it came back on. after that he went put it all back together. From what he said if you press on certain parts of the screen it goes out. but then others if comes back. Similar to a teeter totter. as he put it. I am guessing a ribbon has come loose or something
Went to unlock my phone this morning off the charger and the screen is totally dead. Couldn't unlock or do anything to it or even see what was going on, called Google and ordered a replacement ASAP.
Went through the not fun task of doing a nandroid backup without seeing what was on the screen and doing some trickery with screenshots then backing up my entire SD card.
However, here's the strange and potentially dangerous thing that I noticed later when I got home this evening. I went to look at the phone and go to a fastboot flash with the factory images and went to touch the bottom of the screen. When I went to do so, to the little bit of the left of the LED light was a SUPER hot portion of the phone. I almost burnt my finger it was so hot.
Not sure what to do about the issue, I feel like if I just call the support line they won't actually take in my concern legitimately. Any suggestions?

On my Transformer Infinity, sometimes the screen won't turn on at all. On a few occasions, if I press Power enough times, I get a glimpse of a message saying the Launcher process has stopped, but then my touchscreen doesn't register any input. The tablet is also sometimes running quite hot at those times. The only way I know to recover from this is press the Power button long enough to force a reboot, then everything is normal. Could this be what's happening? Do you know if the phone is still running under the black screen? Have you tried forcing a reboot, and did it work?
As for the hot phone, I've noticed my N5 does get a bit warm when I'm using it intensively (4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and screen on all at the same time and in use) but not enough to burn me. Could be hard to tell which component is heating up like that since I think it could be the screen backlight, SoC or battery... Do let us know if you find out more.

I had called them and reported the screen totally dead with lines streaking vertically and got a new replacement ordered. It wasn't until late last night when I got back and had the screen on in this dead mode that the bottom was extremely hot. I'll have to call them back and let them know

Yeah, no its definitely dead. There were streaked lines across it, rebooted it multiple times. I ended up going into the bootloader and recovery via adb/fastboot and all that jazz. It eventually just would not work now.
In regards to the hot part I definitely think it was the lower part of the screen. It was quite literally half an inch away from the LED to the left. Was super super hot then once I shut the defective screen off (I could tell by the backlit light or whatever) it wasn't hot anymore after a minute or so.

32gb black version. I ordered it immediately when they announced it that day.
mine gets really warm when i'm doing a TWRP backup then it goes into bootloop after and wont cool down. i have to force it to power off from recovery and let it cool, but i've always seen it happen. i wonder if yours was attempting to boot over and over for hours and cooked itself.....? i have a launch day black 32gb too, running Cataclysm with Franco at the moment but it was doing it on rooted stock with stock kernel
I had to send my 19 day old 32Gb Red Nexus 5 in to LG for the same reason. I was using the phone and all of the sudden had vertical lines and the bottom of the screen got burn your fingers hot. Waiting to see what LG does with my phone. The only thin I can figure is the synaptics chip which controls the screen is bad. Its the only thing in that area that could get that hot. I also noticed when I first got my phone the glass in the same area looked like it had a slight wave in it. Didn't think anything of it at the time. I'll let you know how it goes.
Is RMA/replacement applicable for Rooted and unlocked devices?
I don't believe its an issue with developer phones as long as the issue wasn't caused by something you did like brick it by flashing a wrong radio or something like that. It has to be a manufacture defect to get it fixed for free.

Do a factory reset. Keep in mind that this will wipe your internal storage so be sure to back up and data, photos, etc. before hand. If that doesn't fix it then flash the factory image over. As to how, refer to this thread.
Your problem should be fixed after the Factory Reset though. Good Luck!
Thanks. I was hoping it wouldn't come to this but oh well. Is there a cause for this?

Were are talking about the N5 right?. I had this issue with my G2X a couple years ago. It turns out that after I took it apart the flex cable looked like at had been torn a tad bit. This sounds like a flex cable problem. Software could be the issue and a factory reset may help. However in my experience that's usually a flex cable or pop connection. Send it in if the reset does not work. Don't bother trying to do this yourself. It may be the front panel flex cable. Or the pop connection of the main board. When these cables are made, they are literally thrown into barrels and sent to The front panel assembly line. So chances are. One of these flex cables suffered some damage. Same goes with the tiny connection on the main board. These tiny pieces are put on one by one. I think robots do it. The device turned on for their tests. But the long run? ...Well you get the point.

hey guys, new to the m8 here but I'm already having issues sadly. I'm getting phantom touches randomly. I'll be in hangouts or any app, and all of a sudden the home button will just hit itself. I see the gray glow around the button, and it returns home. if I quickly go back to hangout with the keyword up, I'll notice that it'll add a random letter before I start typing.
is this a touchscreen issue or a software issue? I bought the phone used from a friend. hopefully someone can help shed some light on this.

This use to happen to me when I was in Playstore installing apps, it would just hit home button everytime or hit app I didn't mean to tap on. I would say its touchscreen issue and I would calibrating my device using the "G-Sensor Calibration" in the "Display & gestures" section if you didn't know that already.

well the thing is its used, I bought it off a friend. he said he only ever had the issue when it was plugged in, and he always figured it was because he wasn't using the HTC charger. I first noticed it when it was plugged in but then I noticed it when it was unplugged still.
also, to note, that same thing happened to me in the play store. I was downloading all my apps when I set it up and it kept randomly going home. I'm trying to decide what to do because I haven't paid him yet because he's letting me use it for a few days to see if I like it. I do really like it but I just want to figure this out.
I've had touch screen issues with my nexus 7 which are very annoying, but they seem to be software related so I'm hoping maybe flashing a rom might help on here..

I'm not really sure, but HTC gave me a hard time about being S-Off but I eventually talked them out of charging me for the replacement.
I then had issues with the replacement that HTC sent me so I dealt with VZW on getting that one replaced.
I made sure to set that one back to S-On as I didn't want to deal with Verizon over an unlocked bootloader.

That's good to know but do you think Verizon would say anything if my bootloader said Relocked instead off Locked?
I'm not sure, I only know that HTC gave me a hard time and my device was locked, not relocked. I'd guess that VZW doesn't have a thorough check like HTC does, but it is a risk.
hmm. seems like a hardware issue then. i really tried to like the phone..used it for 1 day and then realized it's not for me. although those speakers are amazing, the phone is HUGE for having such a small screen (i'm used to the nice, bezel-less LG G2) so it isn't really worth it for me to spend $350 on. plus, the battery was pretty bad. immediately after taking it off the charger overnight, it dropped to 99% within a minute..within like 30 minutes of morning usage, i was already down to like 82% (which reminded me of the Droid DNA days with it's awful battery...) compared to my G2 which stays at 100% for about 1.5 hours and 20 minutes screen on time. by the time i leave the house in the morning for work, i'm typically at 95%. the M8 was at like 82%. i sometimes get home after work and my G2 is at 75%. the M8 was at 30% after light usage throughout the day. yeah, idc what evreyone says about the M8's battery, it just isn't good enough for me.
Wow. That's awful battery life. Almost what I used to get on my rezound. I would definitely have returned my m8 if I got battery life like that. Something must be wrong with yours. I usually get through my 16hr day with about 70% left, even closer to 80% if I don't use it much. I think the best I ever got out of this phone was almost 3 days and over 8 hours screen time. It can sometimes be a chore to get good life out of this phone though. I constantly fight with this thing to get it to sleep but it's mostly issues with Google and their very annoying play services.
