[Q] Wifi problem on Gingerbread 2.3.5 - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I have the samsung galaxy s 4g. It came with froyo 2.2 when I bought the phone. I used samsung kies mini to upgrade to gingerbread 2.3.6. After i had gingerbread 2.3.6 I wanted to get ice cream sandwhich. I messed up my phone after that ( I got the phone, ! ,computer icon my screen and also my phone would say samsung galaxy s 4g and would keep restarting). But then i used odin (took me a day to fix it) and got the phone to go to gingerbread 2.3.5 and now my wifi is really weak. I had full wifi bars in my room before and now it shows 1 or 2 bars only. How can i fix the wifi? Or will I have to get 2.3.6 gingerbread again to fix it? I dont have the 2.3.6 gingerbread files so can someone please post them and tell me instructions on how to do it. I tried to update to gingerbread 2.3.6 again using samsung kies mini but when i connect it, under firmware version it says unregistered device and under firmware upgrade it says nothing. Im real nooby at this, if anyone can help me that would be great.
Firmware version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T959VUVKI1
Kernal version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKI1-CL579207
Build number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKI1

So do i just put my phone in download mode and on odin i put the file in your signature in the PDA part of odin? it wont freeze in download mode like before and say fail? Does it matter which odin i use? Are you sure if i download gingetbread 2.3.6 it will fix the weak wifi signal?

Great hiemedall guide!
READ THE WHOLE THING: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21953587
now we just need an odin guide like that. and then a simple guide to jump between odin and hiemedall(driver switch), it can get confusing.
An EFS(Encrypted File System) backup is nice to do, but it requires root access. Something that i recommend, but is not very necessary if you dont plan on flashing your phone often.
This is how i flash my phone:
READ the operation procedure(OP) EVERY time, if you dont understand, read it again, then the comments.
FIRST I use gremlin remover by thomas.raines: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500427
I would recommend steps 1 and 2(battery and SD card reset), step 3 is the goods, its fine to skip the filesystem cleaner part, because your going to flash the gremlin remover. The gremlin remover is an odin application, so you must be usng the appropriate drivers(not hiemedall drivers). If you have already installed hiemedall drivers, just open your device manager, scroll down to your usb devices, select your phone(samsung usb device), proporties, drivers tab, and i like to select UPDATE DRIVERS(grabs driver from microsoft), but you can roll them back too. There are many other ways about it, but this is the easiest ive found.download gremlin remover, ensure phone is unplugged, start task manager - END ALL KIES APPS, then RESET phone into download mode, start gremlin remover, plug in phone to computer via usb. The odin app should recognize your phone, saying some device was plugged in. Hit start, takes about 5-10 minutes, maybe longer. If it fails: close odin, unplug your phone, remove the battery, wait a few seconds, insert battery, start into download mode(possible that you have soft-brick if odin install fails, NO WORRIES, just a different screen than download mode, essentially the same as download mode.) start odin, connect phone to computer. If odin doesn't see your phone, just repeat the process, starting with driver install.(the same process if you have trouble w/ hiemedall, but different device driver and driver installation method[i use zadig.exe and install the WinUSB drivers to the samsung usb device])
IF you want to stay stock, stop here.
I think this flashing process includes root access, but I DONT KNOW. I'm also unsure the rom/kernel and modem version of this flash.
IF you need a different modem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192436(save modem flashing till last if you continue to follow my guide)
SECOND I flash Antonx's KJ6 1.1.3 barebone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1669364
This is a hiemdall app, so you need heimedall device driver. AntonX's kernel is included in the install. It supports voodoo sound and BLN(google play apps) which are both very useful.
That is probably as far as you should go, it will give you ROOT access, BLN, and voodoo sound for KJ6.
If you feel comfortable editing system files, continue.
OPTIONAL:
I personally then flash the BlastOff v2 kernel by bhundven: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828171
wifi.conf requires editing for wifi to work w/ this kernel, described in thread
I then flash lightningzap v5 by thomas.raines: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386027
This also requires editing of system files because bhundven's kernel includes cherry-picked parts of AntonX's, both of which have issues w/ lightningzap.
I get crazy battery life(36 hours+), im OCed at 1.1ghz, and defualt UV at -25mV.
Good luck!

Not technically. Blastoff is not based on AntonX's kernel. It integrates some of the changes AntonX made to do OC/UV, BLN, and Voodoo Sound.

YMMV, Different people use their phones in different ways that we cannot anticipate. How you use your phone is different then how I use mine. And we will both get different battery life results.

You cant run odin stuff from heimdall. He was saying use heimdall instead. It is much easier than odin. The gremlin remover uses a older version of android that I believe is actually a leak and not official. Until I started using heimdall I kept gremlin remover on the ready, but I prefer heimdall now because it really is much easier to use.

Dont interpret that as negative critisism but more of suggestions to make things much simpler. You are using two different programs to accomplish something heimdall will do on its own.

i guess i dont understand what the gremlin remover does exactly, its 600mb, 3x the size of "normal" roms, takes maybe a minute or two longer to flash than an other rom. i suppose i like it because i feel it starts me out on a clean slate, which i can then manipulate from there, or try.
so i guess this is why it is big:
thomas.raines said:

[Q] List of Heimdall-compatible Firmware Packages for SGS4G?

I have to use Heimdall if I'm to flash my phone. At home I only have access to Mac. I used a PC at work to root my phone (superoneclick was waaay easy), but I don't want to push my luck with IT and my boss at work.
Is there a list of Heimdall packages for the SGS4G anywhere? I've been searching and can't find them anywhere. Maybe Heimdall 1.3 is too new??
I am hoping to use Audiophile because it just chaps my a$$ that I can't play a stock music player (TMOUS) without it skipping out (paucity of cpu cycles I imagine). I very much appreciate the post RaverX3X put up about Audiophile recently. However he focused on Odin and I can't use Odin.
Any ideas anyone?
No one has made any firmware packages for it.
You'd only use Heimdall for flashing a stock rom base with a custom kernel and then you'd have to flash audiophile through CWM anyway.
I'd make a firmware package for you if I wasn't on my way out soon though. Maybe if no one else has done it when I get back I'll set something up for you.
Alright I made the heimdall package for you, I haven't tested it though, so proceed at your own risk.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tea..._kh2_with_kg4_kernel_heimdall.tar.gz/download
Did it work? I want to know so I can post it on the original thread.
You gave some qualifications about using CWM before putting up the Heimdall package. Since this is my first time flashing and I only have my SGS4G so I am going slowly. I got CWM installed and backed up. I downloaded your file and have it on my Mac. Before I try to use, I want to be sure I know what I'm doing. So I'm reading a lot of XDA first.
You will be the second to know I got it installed and working (with me being the first obviously. )
Thanks for the help.
You actually don't need CWM at all. You'll wind up with CWM after flashing this.
Okay, I'll give this one a try. In a previous message you said that after using Heimdall, I still need to flash Audiophile using CWM. Is that still true? Is there any other software I need to flash with CWM?
You might need to flash my busybox_installer.zip but I think Raver may have included that in the audiophile ftw installer.
Well I tried but Heimdall could never see my phone. I can connect USB storage using the phone, but Heimdall can't detect the device at all.
I've searched XDA trying to find MAC drivers for the phone that might be better than mine, but I've not found anything yet.
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Scroll down and find the OSX version (Heimdall suite 1.3.0). It comes with Codeless kext (aka driver). It should install libusb for you.
Hmmm, I installed that package. I do not know why kext didn't work. I know I have a system reboot since then.
Maybe I'll uninstall and try to re-install.
Thanks A Lot

Awesome, I'm glad it worked for you. I'll be making the Froyo portion of the heimdall package available soon in order to update my GB Starter Pack guide for mac/linux.
How straightforward was the install by the way? I'm still trying to get feedback from users.
I am very happy heimdall is working for you and you got the ROM flashed.
Very frustrated that I can't get heimdall to see my phone. I have CWM installed and I have the RootExplorer app working and I can see my SD card as a USB drive on my Mac. Is it possible to flash with just those three tools?
All the guides I see seem to focus on Odin or Heimdall. Do they do some magic that I can't accomplish on my own?

Sadly there's no safe way to flash bootloaders using CWM, which is the only reason we're using Odin/Heimdall. I can't diagnose the problems on a mac since I don't own one, but have you tried removing heimdall, restarting, reinstalling, restarting and trying again? Might make it work.
Thanks A Lot

You have to flash one of the 2 alternate packages. The fully stock one is just that and doesn't include a cwm kernel.

As far as ODIN not recognizing your phone - go to this thread - and use the program to list and uninstall all Samsung and Android drivers listed. People have said after using Heimdall, ODIN will not recognize their phone. After uninstalling all the drivers, use kies mini to reinstall your drivers and see if ODIN will recognize your phone.
phordych05 - just a thought and suggestion. Instead of starting a new thread for every problem flashing you are having... use one of the other three or four threads you have started to ask the questions. We will still help you in those threads with your problems and will have less clutter for others to try and find answers.

Well you need to know . If you were on Froyo - you were flashing a GB kernel.
Since you don't know - you need to take the route of flashing GB with Bootloaders to be safe.

You will pull this off no problem. I have helped many people through this.
While you are waiting for the download - go ahead and do step one in that thead:
"Get the latest version of Java 1.6 from this link."
** Just so you understand - Froyo and GB have different bootloaders. If you were on Froyo and trying to flash GB without bootloaders - that is a problem. That is why - to be safe - you are downloading KJ6 WITH BOOTLOADERS so we know you will be good to go afterwards.

No worries... it was a good thread to read.
I ADVISE USING A USB PORT YOU HAVE NOT PLUGGED YOUR PHONE INTO YET FOR THIS!
- Get your phone in Download Mode
How to get into download mode:
Take your microUSB cable and plug it into the computer, but not the phone (yet).
Take out the battery from the phone.
Put the battery back into the phone.
Put the back cover back onto the phone, make sure it's snug so the battery doesn't fall out.
Hold vol + and -, keep holding them.
Plug the USB cable into the phone.
You should now be in download mode and should see a picture of a yellow triangle with Andy and a shovel in the middle.
- Run the Heimdall One-Click you downloaded using the directions in that thread:
Run: 'java -jar SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar'
Its idle and looks like this http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9655144/20120304_003443.jpg

That is your bootloader issue. What have you done so far?
If you ran One-Click once - and got that - your were previously on Froyo. Pull the battery, go into download mode, and flash again - this time checking 'Flash bootloaders'.
Step 4: Run "flash" once. Let the phone reboot itself. Don't touch the phone until it boots into android. If it works and you want to flash bootloaders
- Put your phone into "Download Mode" again:
- Check the "Flash Bootloaders" checkbox and Run "flash" again to get bootloaders.
- Again, let it reboot fully into android.

If it is greyed out start over. If your phone is showing connected. And you installed the Heimdall SGS4G drivers, and it says:
'SMS-KJ6 (v0.0.2d) Stock-Rom with Bootloaders UVKJ6 is ready for your device.'
Click flash.
Let it run until your phone reboots. After it reboots you should boot into CWM. If not just wait a few seconds. Then pull your battery. Leave One-Click OPEN through this, put your phone in download mode, One-Click should recognize it and you should be able to check flash bootloaders. If so - flash again.

Weirdest thing I've ever seen in my Android life. Help!

OK I'm in front of the weirdest thing I've ever seen in my Android life. Turns out I got my Infuse 4G and turn it back to stock AT&T Gingerbread 2.3.6 using Heimdall One-click Back-To-Stock UCLB3, and in the middle of process it seems my USB port disconnected my phone and I though I would see a brick, but thank God it was not that bad (I thought). I change the USB port and put my Infuse in download mode again, passed the tool again and everything went like heaven (again: I thought). I got my stock AT&T Gingerbread 2.3.6, but I never seen CWM anymore, I just can't because the weirdest screen I've ever seen (you'll see).
I thought my phone was unrooted, so I maded my way straight to SuperOneClick v2.3.3 and begin the simplest process. Well... it was unable to root my phone and believe me, it's not ADB problems, I know it because I can install apps through Android Commander without any problem... so that's the first weird thing I have here.
Until that moment I thought my phone was bad-flashed or something, so I tried with another tool, the mythic Odin with h8rift's [UCKD5] Odin - Stock (Root+3e) and with my device in download mode it never shown itself as COM## on Odin (required to start the process), however I clicked on PDA button, selected the .tar.md5 file and start the process that never started (logically).
So right now I have no idea what to do or where to go.
I'm apologize if I explain every little detail, the thing is that most of the time one get answers starting with "You did this?" "Have you tried that?" I all I want is to avoid that. For example, I have USB debugging, ok? Another thing someone could ask.
Please help me guys. I madded a video so you can see what happens when I try to enter CWM. Even when my phone starts, during AT&T logo screen flashes with a strange distortion. I madded this video and post it to YouTube so you can see what is hard for me to explain.
Please HELP!
I need anything that from scratch clean everything and put my phone shiny.
Best regards.
You have "rainbows" because you don't have Gingerbread bootloaders.
You need to use odin a GB leak or Heimdall a GB leak to correct the problem.
Your initial failed flash on heimdall was due to a bad connection -usb data cord or computer usb port.

There are some links on my signature line, including the superthread.
If reading right, you are on uclb3 now. Soc can't root that. I don't think anything can. You have to load another kernel. Like qkster said see his sig. I used both uclb3 packages two night ago. Both work.
(thanks qk)

Well that is really a super thread... right now I have no idea what to do, where to go. Please can anyone tell me which option take in order to disappear this "rainbows", root my Infuse and finally can install whatever ROM I want?
Best regards.
EDIT: OK I've installed (again) Heimdall UCLB3 2.3.6 but with the Flash Bootloader box checked and everything goes like heaven, NO MORE RAINBOWS However I can't root it with SuperOneClick v2.3.3, why is that? How can I root it?
Best regards.
I see you have not read either the original post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
there clearly says that the only way to root in 2.3.6 is by flashing DD Entropy512's kernel.

OK I flashed Entropy512's kernel correctly but the problem is now I see only Samsung logo, I'm stuck there. However I can see a red CWM.

Why is it that you can go from froyo stock rooted with cwm recovery straight to flashing zeus for example? What step added the gingerbread bootloaders? Just trying to learn myself!

from froyo with recovery, you can flash any rom. bypassing the bootloader.
a lot of people do this w/o prob until they run into recovery issue.
i'm not sure re: the exact architecture why this occurs.
the kernel gurus can tell you more.
if you use odin, and install one the gb leaks, you will have that BL, until you do a repartition with gtg's ultimate unbrick which brings you back to froyo. I think you will lose the bl's.
In good practice, I use the 1click heimdall w/ repartition - these are packaged with "official" GB leaks. imho, i believe they are better suited for a base to get to your custom GB rom.
if you're running infused 1.6, there is no needed 'cause it's froyo.
no rainbows there
edit: to each his/her own i guess. the reason why gtg's "unbrick" seems like a life saver is due to repartition with PIT files image.
the heimdall 1 click does the same thing but takes the guess work out from the inexperience user.

[ROM] [2.3.6] Heimdall One-click Back-To-Stock UCLB3
Introduction:
This package will install ATT's SGH-I997 GingerBread UCLB3 to your Infuse 4g.
This package is intended for use on AT&T Network, however it may work with any network if you reset APN. (I have no experience with other networks)
This package includes:
Repartitioning: Repartition to stock UCLB3
Reloading: IBL/PBL, PARAM, SBL, SBL2, Kernel, Recovery, FactoryFS and modem
formatting:Cache and DBdata
This package does not wipe:
EFS(Where your serial number and carrier information is stored)
Data(where your market apps are stored)
SDCard (where your pictures are stored)
How can you use this package?
1. To cleanly install the latest ATT Infuse UCLB3 Gingerbread leak. No hassle One-Click. Then enjoy the lastest leak of Infuse GB.
2. To Restore your phone to factory state.
3. To Restore your phone from boot loops, Samsung Logo, Soft Brick - non-hardware related failures from bad flashes, borked partitions or mismatch voodoo partitions. (I suspect many users will use it for this purpose)
Scenario #1: Oh, gosh! I would love to have the latest GB leak from AT&T! How to I do that? What in the world is Odin? Ain't it some mythological Norse deity?
Heimdall 1 click - done!
Scenario #2: I think I did something to my phone. It's not working right. My wifi is dropping like a leaky faucet. My Market is not working. I hate my phone! I wish it was like factory.
Heimdall 1 click - done!
Scenario #3: Oh crap! I just #@#% in my pants! I bricked my phone. OMG!!! I'm stuck on SAMSUNG logo! I'm boot looping! I lost recovery! Help me!!!
Heimdall 1 click - done.
How to INSTALL:
Update to the latest java: http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Run as admin.
1. Put your phone into Download Mode.
2. If you have not used Heimdall, you will need to set up the driver for device recognition.
3. Once your device is connected, the DEVICE STATUS should show: CONNECTED. The long FLASH bar will also turn on for flashing.
4. Click on the FLASH button. (In my opinion: I recommend that you do this in a safe environment. Do not disturb your phone will flashing this firmware. Turn off Antivirus. Do not run any other programs, upload/download/youtube/burning DVD etc)
5. Once it has completed, your phone will reboot. You will hopefully see the ATT logo and reboot into STOCK UCLB3.
6. If it did not work, you will have to put it back into DOWNLOAD mode and reflash a second time, with the FLASH BOOTLOADER box checked. This is more likely if you never had proper Gingerbread bootloaders on your phone, if you are coming from FROYO or if you never had Odin a Gingerbread leak to get your bootloaders.

How I made this package:
I took this leak from here. Please thank Przekret for providing us these packages.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507658
I used Adam Outler's Heimdall One-Click Packaging system.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348392
I used Adam's original post as a model. PIT files came from there as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331381
I used Heimdall Frontend to create the Heimdall tar.gz.
I tested on my device several times to ensure functionality.
It works for me.
DOWNLOAD mode: Power off. Open back cover. Remove battery. Press and hold both volume buttons - (do not hold power button) Insert battery while holding volume buttons. Plug in USB cable.
It can also be achieved by open back cover, Remove battery. Press and hold both volume buttons. Plug in USB cable and then insert battery.

Disclaimer: I offer this package as my own work. I have tested on my device and it worked after I intentionally borked it several times. I am sharing it. I am not asking you to use it. Use it at your own risk.
Please don't blame me if some act of God cause your phone to go haywire when you try it. If you can't get it to work, try a different USB Data cord, a different USB port, try a different PC or just rebooting your PC after driver installation.
Since I don't have my own server, I'm using Minus.com. Sometimes they are overwhelm by requests, it takes some patience. Please avoid mirroring unless you have my permission before hand. Thanks.
