[Q] Telstra HTC One XL stuck in HBOOT, recovery doesn't seem to work - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi experts
I have a Telstra HTC One XL that was provided with 1.89. I wanted to get root, but have managed to tie myself in a knot that I cannot seem to get out of. Currently, I can only get my phone into HBOOT which shows:
*** TAMPERED ***
*** RELOCKED ***
*** Security Warning ***
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.11.0000
RADIO-0.18c.32.09.01
OpenDSP-v28.1.0.32.0504

Click to collapse
I managed to unlock the bootloader and flashed TWRP 2.2.2.0 using:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-evita.img
For a while I was able to get into recovery, so I tried to install one of teh rooted Telstra ROMs (1.89), but when it booted, it complained about PlayStore and dropbox requiring update and the pull-down notifictaions/settings area was not working. So, I returned to TWRP, cleaned cache/Dalvik/etc as per one of the threads on this site and re-tried the install, but from then my sdcard seemed to become unmountable. I tried to mount sdcard from adb, but received the following error:
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p36 on /sdcard failed: Invalid argument
Click to collapse
So, I tried to restore using Telstra RUU (RUU_Evita_UL_Telstra_WWE_1.89.841.9_Radio_0.18c.32.09.01_10.93a.32.20L_release_266699_signed.exe) which failed, presumably because the sdcard wasn't mounting properly.
After this, I read a post that suggested that RUU only works if bootloader is locked, which I did using:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Now, HBOOT shows that it is relocked, but I no longer seem to be able to get into recovery and have no idea what to try next. I understand that if I can still access HBOOT that the phone is not bricked, and would be most grateful if someone could suggest something else to try. At the very least I would be happy to get back to the original unrooted Telstra ROM.
Many thanks in advance,
Mike

you prepped your phone to run the ruu, should be able to run it now and have it not fail.

Update... back to where I was before relocking bootloader
Update:
I re-unlocked the bootloader using htcdev, and was able t reflash TWRP 2.2.2.0, but sdcard still refuses to mount. The TWRP log shows:
* Verifying filesystems...
* Verifying partition sizes...
E:Unable to mount '/data' (tw_mount)
E:Unable to mount '/cache' (tw_mount)
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard' (tw_mount)
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard' (tw_mount)
E:failed to mount /sdcard (Invalid Argument)
...repeated several times...
E:Unable to mount /sdcard during GUI startup.
E:failed to mount /cache/recovery/command
Running boot script...
Finished Running boot script.
...then the above statements are repeated several times...

So, I guess I need to know why the sdcard and other partitions won't mount, and then how to flash *any* working ROM to get my phone back into the OS.
Thanks,
Mike

RUU failed with relocked bootloader

Thanks DvineLord. When I re-tried the RUU, it complained that battery was <30%, but when I just reflashed TWRP it says battery is at 98%. It has been plugged into PC for ages (and overnight) but no battery LED lights while connected.
Do you think I should relock the bootloader and retry the RUU?

Phew
Thanks DvineLord for giving me confidence that I was on the right track.
Initially I re-tried the 1.81 RUU so that I could root, then use RootKeeper to try and preserve it between system updates. Sadly, 1.81 RUU complained of an incompatible HBOOT version. However, 1.89 RUU seems to have worked OK, so I have my non-rooted 1.89 back. yay!
That was a bit scary! My wife would never let me shell out for another phone if I wrecked it, and the thought of going back to the space-crippled Desire was so depressing!
Guess I will forget rooting for now
Thanks,
Mike

just use your unlock token, flash recovery, then get [29.08.2012] SuperSU v0.96 flashable or market version i usually use the flashable.
but make sure your storage works in stock rom, format it inside the rom if you can.

Thanks DvineLord. I decided that after getting the 1.89 RUU to work that I would have another crack at the rooted Telstra stock 1.89 with TWRP 2.2.2.0. This time it worked without issue. I suspect that the first time I tried to do it, I might have screwed things up by using TWRP 2.3 which didnt work with the Telstra root ROM, and then a bungled CyanogenMod 10 nightly install stuffed up my partitions.
I am now rooted in 1.89 which includes the SuperSU that you referred to.
Thanks a lot!
Mike

Hi Ryan
Check out this all-in-one tool for unlocking/reflashing. It is brilliant. If you are stuck in bootloader it should still work - the tool sends the appropriate commands to the phone over ADB to reboot-to-bootloader, so you can just ignore that step.

[Q] [HTC One S][S3] Urgent Help Needed

Hey All,
I recently tried rooting my HTC One S (s3) and have had a few problems.
1. Unlocked bootloader successfully, flashed TWRP 2.3.1.0 successfully but won't mount to USB or won't mount sdcard or storage when I try and flash a ROM.
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard'

Or when I mount USB my computer's asking to format the device.
2. I lost my OS (I had Android 4.0.3 and Sense 4.0) and pretty much can't use my phone as a phone. Tried looking for the right RUU but none of them fit my device.

Did you install the S3 version of TWRP? If you have and didn't get to flash a rom then you need to flash stock recovery then factory reset in bootloader.

So is SD working now then since you said it didn't let you flash a rom or did you mean recovery? I see you was looking for that so I go with that, so what you need to do is hold Vol- when turning the phone on and it should load the bootloader, from there you should see factory reset select it and after it's done it's thing everything should be working.

Reverting back to stock issues (TELUS)

I'm sending this phone back for warranty (sim card error), and I can't seem to be able to get it back to stock. I've searched all over this site, so any help would be great!
This is a Telus phone, CID: TELUS001. Unlocked with viper rom installed. I can't seem to read my version, as fastboot getvar version-main does not return anything.
From the RUU download pages, only the Telus OTA is available for my phone.
I've tried numerous RUU's, but as expected, I'm getting version errors. I have also tried flashing the OTA over stock recovery, but the recovery can't recognize my SD card (not sure why). SD card is working properly though.

Telus did not release an RUU for that software version on our phone. So OTA is the only way.
So to do this properly as you are not S-OFF
download the OTA
extracted the recovery from the OTA & flash it
then fastboot erase cache
then relocked the bootloader
Then flash the zip through stock recovery.

Ok that's what I figured. I have done exactly this, but when I get to stock recovery I'm getting "SD card can not be found" errors. So using the OTA isn't possible right now. Do you know any other way?
I'll try and figure out the SD card error and go from there I guess.
Thanks for the info!!

what is the solution for the at&t htc one x? I am running the viper rom and would LOVE to restore this back to factory settings. You need to S-OFF first. Check if you are S-OFF in bootloader, if not, S-OFF then run any ATT RUU for the oneXL.
If you attempt to RUU without achieving S-OFF you will brick.

So I extracted the recovery from the OTA and followed the steps, but in the recovery menu I'm still getting:
Mount SDCARD failed 1 times
Mount SDCARD failed 2 times
Mount SDCARD failed 3 times
Mount SDCARD failed 4 times
Mount SDCARD failed 5 times
Can not mount SD Card.(No such file or directory)
Using any of the "apply" menus in the recovery brings up an error and my phone is rebooted.
I've tried it 3-4 times now. Any suggestions?
Thanks again,

Ok I will try this sometime this weekend, thanks! Did you have to go the manual route for getting SuperCID? I have tried the batch AT&T file that has been posted, but it won't work for my phone.
You will probably need to downgrade your hboot to be able to write to mmcblk0p4. To do that you would need the jet tool.

I have a similar situation and was hoping to get some advice before I proceed. I need to return my Telus phone to stock to enable enterprise email (the GOOD app checks for root and doesn't access email if root is detected).
My device information is as follows:

Recovery: TWRP 2.6.0.0

I have read the warnings about applying an RUU when S-ON and SuperCID, but since I was S-ON without SuperCID, will the method of:
download the OTA
extract recovery from the OTA & flash it
fastboot erase cache
relocked the bootloader
flash the zip through stock recovery
work to restore my phone to stock? Will I risk bricking the phone?
Thanks for the help.

Should work... Yes there is a risk. I would RUU instead of OTA though since the OTA does not flash everything back to stock.
I don't see why you would avoid taking the time to S-OFF though...

Can't install Rom

Hi All
I tried to S-OFF my wife's phone and screwed up big time!
Long story short, I have now access only to Bootloader and Recovery (TWRP 2.5.0.0).
I can't install any rom, can't boot up the phone.
I thought I can RUU and then start everything over (CID, root, S-OFF) but I can't find RUU to download.
Besides - is that a good idea or maybe I can try something else?
Her phone was rooted, CID but no S-OFF.
Now, when I try to install Rom, it fails every time. I think something got messed up in the partitions but I'm not 100% sure.
Any suggestions?

Sorry, I need some english lesson too.
Your english is fine
I think you only need to flash a stock 4.2.2 rom from TWRP, SuperSu.zip for root and the boot.img of this rom with fastboot.
Use the link in my signature and you will find all what you need, linked in my Index Thread.
"Merci" for my english...and the solution
I'll try this evening - I don't need to change the CID number ? I think my phone is branded with my operator
You can't chage it, as long as you don't have a running OS.
Only then you can get S-Off, which is needed to change CID.
So...
I had some problem
I can't wipe with TWRP 2.7.0.0, it shut down when i do
so i take TWRP 2.6.3.2 - it works
When i want to flash the ROM k2ul_4.2.2_3.11.401.1_stock_odexed_v3

I try again, it works, i don't know how
i use fastboot to flash the boot, OK
I reeboot the phone, everythings great
I shut down the phone, reeboot in recovery and flash the SuperSU, UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99
I reeboot the phone, and surprise......... boot loop
I flash the ROM again and that's all for this evening. The phone works now.:good:

Follow this to get back to stock.
I think u need to be S-Off, not sure if u can on hboot 2.22
Edit: try revone to s-off first then follow the instructions
You should flash your phone,i think
Revone attempt with S-On Unlocked Tampered
I believe I have the exact same issue, after trying to install TWRP and changing to CWM Touch. I tried to run Revone through ADB and the commands seemed to work but when I reboot I am still S-On and Tampered. I would love to hear if anyone get's this to work. Thanks.
Do what Everest said.
Mind you what I would do is get twrp onto phone make sure your bootloader is unlocked and then flash a zip with twrp and with zip on usb via otg.
Will Try

Thanks, i'll work on that first and then try Revone if needed. I've used recovery successfully on older models so I get that process. Newby question on the use of fastboot flash: I am seeing reference to use of the flash command which I understand - followed by going into recovery and installing the zip for the same file. If that is the correct 1-2 step for a rom fine, but where do I find (file location) the zip that I flashed in the first step? I'm sure it's easy, I can run with the basic pointers once I hear them. Thanks!!

Follow this guide:

TWRP install zip, sideload, rumrunner
Thank you for your patience! Maybe I should provide more details:
system info
m4_ul pvt ship s-on rl
hboot-2.22.0000
radio-1.25.40g.00.19
openDSP-v19.2.0268.0927
OS-3.10.502.3
eMMC-boot 1024MB
Jan 29 2014
Installed TWRP 2.6.3.0 and runs, I notice on recovery boot shows E: unable to mount '/cache'
When trying to install rom.zip (which is JmzM4_stockrooted_deodex_att) I get this message:
checking for md5 file...
skipping md5 check: no md5 file found.
updating partition details...
E: unable to mount '/cache'
I tried ADB SIDELOAD before getting rumrunner, message is failed to write data 'protocol fault (no status)'
Finally I attempted Rumrunner after checking ADB devices which does return (my serial number) recovery
Resulting message:
please wait.........................
ERROR: run rumrunner again and READ (no adb connection to device. Debugging on? Drivers?)
Even though ADB sees the device in terminal.. I'm not sure what to make of that.
It's probably something simple I missed like needing a new boot.img or creating a file or script.
That is where I don't have experience. Again thanks for your patience!! Learning.
Are you sure your bootloader is unlocked?
Looks like it's reading different partition.
Good luck.

Could it be a fake flag? I def had it unlocked, and believe I relocked it when I started having issues. Then I think I used revone to change the flag. I may as well jump into fastboot and reapply the htcdev token again. How can I tell if it is unlocked after?
Another note. I notice when I exit TWRP it tells me my device is not rooted and offers to install supersu...yet the next time I go in and exit again it says the same thing. The theme that seems to be building here for me is nothing is really able to be applied. Frustrating. I'll get that htc token flashed for now....It sure would be amazing if there was an RUU that I could actually apply. I haven't found one that works.
Unlocked
..By the way, if it helps, I have another exact same model. I just don't want to mess it up trying to get set up to do a backup, especially if the device I am working on won't flash anything anyway.
Anyone help
Can anyone give me an idea of where my main problem begins? As I mentioned, I am s-ON and can't seem to get past that. Since there is no full RUU downloan for this version, I can't just flash that. As it is now I can get adb, fastboot, and rebootRUU access, but no solution is working. I am certain the htcdev unlock worked, but every time I try to flash something I run into an error. I can see a file system if I go in as if I'm going to insall a zip in TWRP but am not sure if it works, the partition log keeps telling me E: unable to mount '/cache'. I also see a message Kernel does not have support for reading SELinux...which I imagine effects sideload options. What can I do? I appreciate any help.
