Hello everyone! I just got my HTC Sensation 4G, and I really want to root it. The problem is, this phone is so much more complex than my Optimus V and there are many different methods to rooting this phone. So if anyone has the time, can you give me a quick run down on how to flash a ROM and which way is the easiest way to root? To me it seems like the Super Utility is the easiest, but VipeR's method is more in depth.
PS: I am currently on Sense 3.0 with Android 2.3.4, the kernal version is 2.6.35.13. I want to flash Bruce's CM10 or possibly the latest MIUI JB. TWRP 2.3 seems like a good recovery, but I see a lot of people using 4EXT, so which would work better?
Thanks in advance!
You should check the stickies in the dev section. It will be the third post from the top. That will be a good start for you

All right guys, I'll make sure to read those guides and not use the HTC Dev method. I saw on some topics like Bruce's CM10 that I need the ICS firmware. This is achieved by downloading the ICS/Sense 3.6 update correct? And if it is, just grab it from under settings and go from there? Sorry for being such a noob at this!
As you are still on Gingerbread, I would suggest to S-OFF your device first as it is quite easy to do so. Later, on ICS and 1.27 HBOOT it will be more difficult. If you S-OFF your device now, you can update your phone thereafter to ICS. I think these would be the correct moves, I hope someone will confirm this! Have a good day!
Yeh if your still on gingerbread soff now instead of with ICS. Then you can update to ICS/JB by flashing 3.32/3.33 firmware once your soff.

So S-Off with Revolutionary then do the OTA update or use Kohr-Ah's 3.33 update? God I hate having to ask so many questions, but I just want to make sure I get through this all cleanly. No need for Super CID or perm root until I get updated to 3.33 correct?
Someone more clever should confirm this to you but I think if you s-off, then install ICS you can still update your firmware. That's the point of S-OFF-ing your device. You can do whatever you want with it. But wait until someone confirm this to you or it might be written somewhere.
Seems like doing the ICS update then using the Super Utility is the simplest way, with the wire trick being the hardest part. Can anyone confirm please?
S-OFF before you update to ICS! After S-OFF you can still install ICS on your device. It is much easier to S-OFF on Gingerbread. No wire trick etc... just simple instructions you need to follow!
No you want to soff first in gingerbread ad above posters suggested it will be best in the long run and a whole lot easier for you!once you update it will be more difficult to soff. Hope this helps so do the soff in gingerbread first.

Ok, so S-Off well in GB. Do I use Super Utility or VipeR's Guide?
But can someone tell me the correct way to get the 3.32/3.33 firmware after that? I am assuming I should follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472298
And that I should use the 3.32 TMOUS firmware from here, as I am on T-Mobile US:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21711154#post21711154
Alright, so I did all the reading up I could, and I think I got this down. Im going to use VipeR's guide to S-Off, root, and SuperCID, then I'm going to usejoaquinf's guide to flash Kohr-Ah's 3.33 Universal firmware update. After that going to put on Bruce's CM10 and away I'll go.
PS: Anyone here use the latest TWRP Recovery on this phone? It seems the focus is one 4EXT.
Use 4ext! It will make your life easier later... good luck and report back how you got on!

Ok So back in the day I used the ace hack kit so I was happily on froyo me specs are:
Android Version 2.2.1
Kernel Version 2.6.32.21-g3c08447
Software Number Inspired DHD AFR003
so now as I remember I did the s-off rooted and unlocked but need to go back to stock firmware (IDK just want it) so att made the update to gingerbread so my question is:
If I update like the way the htc page tells me to will it brick my phone ?
and if not what do I have to do?
ive just been out of it and im a little back behind but I find posts with other things than this thanks in advance guys!
Check out this thread.

It has all the instructions and tools you need to return to stock.
but I cant just execute the htc update and what would happen my main concern is messing up my phone by just updating to the official Gingerbread I am on still on the same specs
Yes you can just flash the gingerbread ruu. You will be stock but still have soff which is fine unless you were going to do some kind of warranty claim then I would suggest gong son aswell

Do you mean the OTA update, or the RUU from HTC's website? If the former, then no, you can't unless you are running a rock-stock froyo ROM (it will abort before doing anything). If the latter, then yes, you can run it, but it will wipe everything.

Flashing ghe htc OTA update while you are S-Off will not work. Found this out the hard way back when I first started messing with phones
You can un root your phone and put S-On and update it to gingerbread but I don't think you'll be able to root it as I believe the hack kit requires you to downgrade firmware anyway.
Best bet is to just flash a gingerbread rom. If your trying to keep sense I would suggest the rom virtuous unity.
Has sense 3.0 with a load of new features and is gingerbread I believe.
Either way, best of luck. Hope this helps

well if you don't want to install ics custom rom you don't have to but if you want you have anyway there are ics fw that can be installed without supercid but imo it is better to supercid
edit: and if you supercid you can revert it back....however if you have rooted the phone you can't receive OTA, or better you can but it will brick your phone

yes man before getting the ota you MUST flash the stock htc RUU which you can find in the development forum
Almost everyone does SuperCID after rooting.
After Rooting, I didn't though. I just S-Offed. A week later, I realized I had to SuperCID to get some ROMs to work. So I did it and never regretted.
Go for it.

You don't have to supercid, but it might be handy at some point. It will allow you to flash any ruu shall you ever need it.

if your not branded,
you will almost never have to supercid for a custom rom to install.
but for example if a firmware update is mandatory, you might depending on your cid/mid.
i own a xe device and never supercid it, can install anything without problems. (dont always) believe what people say, but always check the description on the base of your own cid/mid yourself.
that said,it cant hurt to supercid, but if its not mandatory why?
+1 Me too
+1 I've supercid as well, changed a few times back to orginal CID because of warranty without problem.
I have just started learning about rooting, I have read lots of threads about rooting information. I'm planning to root my Sensation 4G today. But there are so much different ways of rooting it, I don't know what is the latest and best. So, can a Sensation owner that has already rooted tell me whats the best and easy way to root the Sensation 4G as of today. I just noticed that my Sensation 4G does still have a few month of warranty, so just in case something happens to it, I need a way of rooting that will be able to also unroot it and be back to stock ROM as well.

How will I unroot it if anything happens?
Make sure you understand the difference between S-OFF and root.
You really need S-OFF to do anything useful and that's a phone thing.
Root (superuser) is a ROM thing, it will come with any custom ROM and can be installed on a stock ROM.
What HBOOT version have you got ? That determines which S-OFF method you should use.

Hello guy's
I have been searching on xda and google, but did not find a clear answer for my question. I know that S-off allows you to do anything to your phone, and i read 'Alpharev'.
I have unlocked my bootloader, flashed the recovery and rooted my Sensation Hboot 1.27.. using the Hasoon All in one toolkit.
The phone is still s-on and i flashed cyanagenmod 9. All working.
The question is: Wat difference does it make when i make my phone s-off? Is it meaningfull to do it?
I am just a noob on this territory, so is it usefull for me to doe the ('risky') wire-trick to S-off my phone?
Thank you!

Hi,
S-off will enable you to flash different firmwares and radios, and any RUU.
Until you NEED to do any of those things, you are OK on s-on.
What the post above says, there's really no need to unless you're gonna be messing with radios, different firmware, cid, and stuff like that

super cid you can flash any firmware region, but it is not required for your device's own firmware.. firmware upgrades are sometimes a must when flashing different roms (like going from gb to ics or vice versa) if you are already on ics I really don't think it's a benefit to upgrade to another ics firmware if yours works fine.. and you can flash different radios that might improve signal and better reception (results vary so only real way to know is to try one yourself) hope that was clear, that's as far as I know

Yes i had allready flashed the Google apps. I now got it fixed by getting back to stock rom and synced the contacts once more.
But the strange thing is that CM9 still keeps saying: 'No contacts on SIM'.
For the firmware, I do not know which firmware is needed. Is it so that I need a ICS rom?, or must I look at the number, 3.33...
Thanks for all your help!
Edit: I know I need a ICS rom, flashing for instance gb is impossible without flashing firmware.. but must the numbers match?

if s-off, hboot and ruu are unknown for you the procedure could be very risky for you..
maybe think about flashing a custom rom which is based on 4.0.4, like zenRom or Trickdroid 7, its much easier than downgrading etc.

this is normally the ruu, doubleklick, and it makes everything on its own.
but the jb-ota updated the hboot, so the ics ruu isnt compatible anymore.
to let the ics ruu run again you have to downgrade your hboot.

Fyi you will lose warranty if you attempt any of the above steps I.e root, s off etc. I think you should give custom roms a go if you are going to unlock bootloader and root. Is there any way to install the upgrade file manually, or do I need to install a 4.0.4 based custom ROM?

No, I don't get any error messages. The phone merely restarts without installing the update.
I haven't tried any RUU yet.

No, don't use that link, that's obsolete, there is no need for that risk anymore. Go to dev section and read the stickies,, then the s-off thread, if you still need help, PM me and I'll walk you through everything.

ICS 4.04
Hi, I have same problem but I do not find ICS RUU anymore. I have S4 European version. Radio 1.11.50.05.28_10.27.50.08L, Software 3.16.401.8 and Kernel 3.4.10. Maybe someone can help to find ICS RUU?
htc one s unlocking ad rooting

no
this is normally the ruu, doubleklick, and it makes everything on its own.
but the jb-ota updated the hboot, so the ics ruu isnt compatible anymore.
to let the ics ruu run again you have to downgrade your hboot.
