I just purchased an external sd card from my phone.
I'm wondering if there's a thread, or some web resource somewhere which gives ideas of the best way to use the external sd card - Especially when using custom ROM's, ETC.
Are there certain standard aps or other data that people usually move over by default, or keep on the internal sd by default, ETC?

Basically... any files you truly value, store on the external sd. I keep all my music, all my pics (and set camera default to store pics on external), my nandroid backups, theme icons, all my downloads (flashable zips, other downloads, etc), and documents (xlsx, docx, pptx, pdf, etc). I also copy both my internal and external to my desktop computer as a secondary secure backup. If you are concerned about space on your emmc (internal), you can also move certain apps to external sd (some apps don't play well on external, but most have no issue being moved). That should get you started.

+1 I use in exclusively for media files and nandroids/ROMs. Saves so much space on phone.

I'm asking this because I added an external SD a couple weeks ago, and can't seem to figure how to make the best use of it. I can't move apps to it through Apps2SD, and when I try to move my Amazon MP3 folder to it, that doesn't seem to change where the app saves new songs I download to my phone.
So what's it good for? Larger video file storage? Am I missing something?
I put music on my SD Card. What I need to know is what's the best use for the External memory that comes with the phone. Nothing is ever stored there.
There is thread in development about changing internal mounts that might be helpful

When I had a P1000, I used a lot the feature of sending applications and games and its data files to my SD CARD with a single purpose: leave the internal 16Gb memory as free as possible for better perfomance.
Now I have a rooted P6200 and I only can use my SD CARD for storing music and videos because I have no option of MOVE TO SD CARD anymore.
I also tried some applications that MOVE TO SD CARD, but none of them work.
I called the SAMSUNG SUPPORT and they told me I should be able to move to SD, but I read somewhere that it's something about the way that Android 3 and 4 manage partitions... what makes me believe I will not be able.
So, I am confused.
Can I move applications to SD CARD or not?
Can I make a application store data on SD CARD? Example: MailDroid or a game that consumes a lot of the memory - I would prefer to store data on the SD card.
Does anybody have a hint for that?

There are some apps in the Google Play Market like app 2 sd or move to sd (something like that), you can try one of those.
Personally I have no experience on these apps since I still have plenty of space, but you can read a little the features and see if that works for you
Unfortunately, APP2SD does not work to me

Thank you for your suggestion, but when APP2SD starts, I receive this message:
Your device has no real primary external storage or primary storage is emulated
APP2SD will not support move 2 card.
I dont understand this message. I have the 16Gb internal memory plus a 32Gb SD card as s imple a s it can b e, but it is not moving to S D.
P lease someone help me how to solve it.
By the way, the 32Gb SD is fully recognized by the P6200. I can see all my files regularly.
Link2sd may work, but I don't think there would be any performance gain from moving the apps over.

Can I get super user access without rooting? Link2SD tells me I have to allow it to move the app.

Super User access is root access. so, no you can't.

From my point of view, rooting is something relatively easy, both to get and to lose: you just flash a zip from the default recovery. It does not even takes your flash count up. Basically, it's a single file that needs to be placed in "/system/bin/". If you need to send it to support, mount "system" as R/W and delete "su".
I could be wrong though, but you should really look into it. I think it is worth it.
By the way, I think you would have to partition your SD Card to use it with Link2SD...

Hey all,
I just rooted my ATT Galaxy S2 first time and I think the first time android phone in general. I have successfully got to where i want to be. I have internet tethering, uninstalled all the junk, I still sticking with base rom, as I am trying to figure out why CM10 would not boot up beyond loading screen, but thats another topic.
What i don't understand is why you would not be able to move apps to external storage sd card. I used to have htc, and was able to do that, but that was before ICS. I have done some research but not as successfully as i wanted to do.
I have come across "ICS SD Binder" on play.google.com. But I dont completely understand what exactly needs to be done. Or rather bit unsure which drop down item to select and how it might effect my sd card as well as how to move apps afterwards. I assume just relocating them into that folder.
So can some one tell me why is it such a pain to have apps on external sd card and may be point me to right threads on how to point to external sd card and move my apps there or how in general i can get my apps on my external sd card.

I just used grooveshark and audible for my listening and educational needs. Though audio books library isnt bad at 2 gigs. Audio files that i offline are about 6-8 gigs. And thats hits my SG2 internal storage limit : /

Why do you want them on the external? They're easy to replace. Store other stuff on the external
Edit: you can use tibu to move apps to the external, but they don't always work well there.

Apparently my external sd card not seen by that app only internal sd card. Which is useless....
apps2sd moves apps to internal sd not externl sd. dnt think there's a way to move to ext sd yet without assigning ext sd as internal sd and vice versa.

The deal is that we only have 2GB of internal storage, which is where the camera defaults to. This can be filled very easy if one likes to take lots of pictures. There are a lot of ways around this, but the easiest for a non techie is to download a 3rd party camera app and set the storage to the external card. You could also swap mount points or try to symlink it as well.

I have a hard time understanding this, too. Settings>Storage tells me that I have only about 60 MB free in "USB Storage." It also tells me that I have 93 MB of "Pictures, Videos" there. The trouble is, I have no pictures or videos in USB storage. It's all on the external SD card. The camera saves to the external SD card, and all my music, photos, and videos are there, not in internal storage. It even tells me I have 3.4 GB of "Miscellaneous files" in USB storage, which is impossible. That 3.4 GB is actually what's on the external SD at the moment. It tells me that over 1 GB of apps are stored there, even though the apps actually there come to far less---maybe there's app data that's adding to the total.
The only time it becomes a problem is when I run NewsRob, which invariably tells me it doesn't have enough memory to work.

For pics and such, use Google drive, drop box or sky drive. Mine is set to upload over WiFi only. After my pics are up, I delete them from gallery. Also, make sure all music is on external sd . Then go to settings/storage erase SD card. This should clean up any uneccesary files or clutter. Last, move all possible apps to SD and clear all caches. FYI , if on any cm 10 variants don't clear the caches to fast or the phone will freeze for 20-40 secs. That is all

Well, I made an interesting discovery last night. I found that, even though I had set the PodKicker app to store podcasts on the external SD card, it had somehow reverted to internal USB memory, and had dumped a bunch of large files in there.
I also found that my Kindle app had deposited a bunch of files in internal USB memory. There's no way to tell Kindle to put them on the external card, but I supposedly only had a few books residing there. An examination of the kindle cache, however, disclosed almost two hundred, taking up a big chunk of memory. I deleted the whole directory, started Kindle, and let it re-download the few that I need. I think somewhere along the line I had to re-register the Kindle app, and it just left a bunch of old files there that it couldn't use anymore.
Between these two purges I freed up about 150 MB of internal USB storage.
150mb isn't much and will be eaten quickly.
a lot of apps install to the internal but load a bunch more on the external.
Camera ICS + is a good camera replacement that can save directly to the external SD.
Also, run ES File Explorer and use it's SD card analysis to see what is taking up space. I know that if you have your google photos synced, even just the thumbnails database file will be up to 1gb.
Move any Titanium or CWM backups to the external SD, but make sure you remember where they are when you go around deleting things.
I also found a trash can folder that was huge so I'm pretty sure that the internal SD card isn't fully freeing up memory when you delete things.
Also go to your App Manager and see which things are taking up a lot of space. I know that Google+, Gmail, Chrome, Facebook, Grooveshark and a few others take up a lot of space.
When I go in under settings>storage > and my internal SD card, I have almost 6gb of misc files. Is it safe to delete them? Its not music or pics, I have all that on my external SD card. Most look harmless. I'm just trying to free up some room on my internal storage.

Hard to really say. Sure, you can, but there could be stuff in there related to existing applications that it just doesn't know how to categorize. You're probably not going to hurt anything permanently if you do delete. You could try something like SD maid and see how much it cleans up too.

For the most part. Misc files are files or folder that are not recognized by the phone folders. For instance, when you first get the phone it automatically makes folders for you. Folder such as: Camera, Downloads and Music. However, if you move files over to it from a computer or even bluetooth and you don't put in one of those specified folders, it will go into the Misc files.
My suggestion is to get ES file explorer and use the app's SD Card Analyst to give you a detailed look of whats really on the SD card.
