Hi All,
Well, I finally received my Andida 1800mAh battery in the mail this week. Charged it up and I'm on my second day of real world testing. It's midday over here and my phone has been off the charger since 8am although I have only used it to send a couple of messages, read a few emails and check my calendar today. I'm not using any SetCPU profiles (haven't even installed SetCPU) and I have 97% remaining.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to test this battery against the stock? I was just going to enable bluetooth, wifi, GPS and load a playlist of the first season of scrubs and see which one lasted the longest. I can't imagine either would last any more than a couple of hours.
Any better ideas would be appreciated, I'm keen to get to the bottom of this and see if there is any real world increase in capacity with this battery.

Im pretty sure this battery has no more mAh than the stock battery.
What do you mean by "mid day"?

Based on what? That's what I'm trying to determine here because although there has been a lot of waffle about batteries on this forum, I've yet to see many people who actually own the battery provide any conclusive results. At this stage I'm neither arguing for or against the battery, but testing it out.

Mid-day means 12:00PM, as in the middle of the day
Charge them both to 100% and run the same movie completely on both. See where each battery stands after the movie finishes.

That would be a good test!
Been waiting for a good reliable review on this battery, let me know how it turns out for you...
Maybe then ill be assured to buy it I cus my inspire needs more jugo [juice]...

I'm interested to hear the results of your test. Sounds like a perfect and objective way to tell which performs better....
I have this battery and just from my normal usage, it doesnt seem to be any different than the stock battery. I have not done any testing, just comparing where the batter is after a normal day to what my stock battery was after a normal day.
Make sure you go through a few cycles with the new battery before doing anything. Also wouldn't hurt to reset your battery stats after it's fully charged. It's hard to tell what a 'normal' days use is to compare one vs the other. The movie test seems to be a pretty valid test to me. Please post your results.
i just got my $109 shipment from netimes.com with 5 cases, blutooth headset, dock with a slot for a battery to charge, and 3 1600 mAh batteries and they were all about $7 but they last almost as long as the stock battery with normal use so their probably about 1200 mAh but with 4 it should get me through a couple of days with MIUI which i get amazing battery on

Not to be rude, but that website wasn't updated that long ago with phones/batteries that are still very relevant in today's market. Considering battery technology has not gone through any sort of major rework for years it's safe to say the results on that page are pretty accurate to those phones and most new phones coming out.
Also, it's no secret that the majority of these companies rate the batteries miserably higher than what they will actually test at. I'd also imagine it's safe to say that since the testing these companies haven't changed their whole business plan to represent accurate battery measurements.
Just my two cents. We all know the general result of these battery threads.
Still those batteries on that website dint represent anything other than the phones they are for. once they do inspire galaxy s the 4 g version etc then that thing can be reference d

Until a reputable company comes out with a batter you can pretty much count on it not being any higher capacity than stock. This is due to the size of the battery, unless it sticks out the side of the phone there is almost not a way to make the battery much higher capacity using the same technology.(cheaply) Do you have evidence to prove otherwise? I'm willing to bet you do not..
do you have evidence it cant?
The evidence is in the battery capacities available, not hard to show that.
that is no evidence.......ive seen aa batteries mAH ratings grow but no physical changes.
but that is beside the point until battery boss is updated with the newest phones batteries then it shouldnt be used as a guide like it was back then
I have an unrooted N1 with latest 2.3.4. Device is a year old and I believe my battery is getting tired. In spite of various battery life techniques and apps, many days it doesn't last through the day, and have it die at inopportune moments. I need to come up with a battery strategy. I googled on this and it's pretty inconclusive. I'm open to buying a direct replacement battery, an OEM flavor of some sort, an extended life battery, or one of the expensive 3200mh batteries that require a replacement cover.
I'm also open to rooting the device if that would allow me to regulate the battery better.
I'm looking for practical advice.
Im wondering this to if its the hardware of an htc or the android os that its lacking the optimized efficieny of the outcome which in fact derailing its competiton comparison to an iphones battery use. I was eagered to grasp an android phone when noticing a huge decline in web browsing or scrolling compared to my outdated ios as of now am missing its quality structure it had possesed.
i suggest getting the stock battery, or going with an aftermarket thru seido or mugen. yes there are cheaper knockoffs, but they dont always work well.
the link in my sig is a project we did for nexus one batterys where we were able to crack open the chip inside your batt and re-programm it for increased capacity.
this let us test every battery we could get our hands on. the cheap batterys have the chip inside that is "locked" and doesnt work right. the better batteries have the fully working chip.
inside the chip is a parameter called "age scalar" which counts down with each charge. after this gets down to 80% your battery is considered dead. if you root you can use the app to check your age etc and configure your batt. either way i would stick with the known brands.
Your have opinions on the Mugen Extended life battery (the one with the alternate back cover)? I would love to not have to think about my battery...

yes my opinion is its a very good option. the 3400 mAh truly has the claimed capacity according to what we pulled from the chip in that one, plus the people using it experience the full capacity range. its worth the purchase if that's what you want, you cant go wrong.
A kind person @ HTC is hooking me with a replacement battery. It will be interesting to see how much better a fresh battery does in my device. After considering the various options of extending a charge, I've decided to be an external USB battery charger device from Trent (http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-IMP500-External-Blackberry/dp/B0013G8PTS). Since I'm almost carrying some sort of bag, no issue stashing this device and carrying it with me for those times when I need extra juice. I will report on performance of that device.
If you are open to rooting, many times a custom ROM and kernel can provide you with significant battery improvements.
In the nightly threads for CyanogenMod (nightlies are test builds and CyanogenMod is one of the more popular 3rd-party ROMs), people have said that with the latest nightlies and a custom kernel by RedStar, they are getting less than 1% per hour battery drain when the phone is idle.
My phone running the nightlies (although the stock kernel that comes with CM), I consistently get between 18-20 hours of use unless I do some crazy battery intensive things. If I hardly use the phone at all, I can easily get two days out of the battery (although I don't do this much). And this is with my battery age at 82% (it is getting close to the official "dead" part).
Plus there are a lot of cool features that are in some custom ROMs.

for sure. i'm even seeing better than that, i get 1% drop every 3 hours a lot of the time on the recent nightly from cyanogen.

Did you call HTC? if so what number did you call? I need a new battery as well and have heard that the oem ones are the best bet.
@chrisonline1991 Called main HTC #s list here: http://www.htc.com/www/support/nexusone/ If you are under warranty, they will likely send you a new battery. I am out of warranty....calling them led to a dead end.

Curious, where do you get battery age from? Is that part of CM7 or a stat in Android I've missed somewhere?
Thanks

No, not part of CM7 or Android. It is an app that was created only for the N1's.
Thread about it is here.

The age is read from the chip inside your specific battery and our app can pull that value.
Be sure to get a real OEM battery or one from a trusted manufacturer. I got a battery on eBay that was sold as OEM and looks like OEM but the chip did not work and the battery life was terrible. I'm not sure what the chip does but I can confirm that having a working one is required to get good battery life. My new battery with broken chip was giving about 8-10 hours of battery life before hitting the 15% warning. My over 1 year old battery with working chip lasts 16+ hours with room to spare.
I recently started testing ch33ybutt's SS4N1 script. I am running the default settings and yesterday after 19 hours i still had 34% remaining when I hooked up the charger before bed.
I use my phone with auto-brightness, bluetooth on, GPS on, and 3G enabled. I turn on/off WiFi as desired but don't leave it on all the time since I'm really only around a hotspot at home. I am definitely not playing around with settings to save battery. Which is great because I don't want to have to mess with that or always be on the look-out for a charger.
Also a subject I haven't mastered yet. But I do know ebay is a very misleading source when it comes to batteries
Sent from my Nexus One
Like the subject says, I currently have the Charge. I just upgraded on Wed. and have 14 days to decide to keep it. I upgraded to it from my beloved DX because:
#1: Battery Life
#2: Lock in my Unlimited data plan prior to the 4G change (its technically not available in my part of Alabama yet, but am on the list to get it by the end of the year.)
What I did not check out was the custom ROM situation for the charge. I love the phone but have been into flashing ROMs since my D1 and sort of miss it.
I just read about the extended battery and I wanted to know what the average battery life is with it, mixed use. I had been considering returning the Charge and keeping my DX till I see the stats on the Bionic (dont really care that much about the duo processor). But the extended battery might push me into taking the charge back for a Tbolt.
Thoughts and opinions would be great!
I'm waiting for a new phone to arrive and I may sell my Thunderbolt so.... I un-rooted and installed the stock ROM and let it update.
Really ODD results:
I'm getting the best battery life I've EVER had with any ROM. I've run several ICS ROMs and they all had the usual poor battery life but I've also run several GB sense, de-sensed and no-sense ROMs, all with poorer battery life than I have now, go figure?????
If it wasn't for the HUGE amount of useless crap VZW puts on a phone I'd probably have been happy w/o rooting the T'bolt...
I'd like to thank all the devs for the very good ROMs I've used, I'm hoping to see some of you over in the Samsung Galaxy SIII forum as I know I'll have to de-bloat the critter when it arrives.
NOTE: I ran my T'bolt almost two full days before I rooted it, I wonder if I can beat that record with the SIII?
I think your s3 is going to get about the same battery life as the bolt. I've used my niece's s3 quite a bit and it seems to lose battery almost as fast as my bolt does. Either way I don't think it's going to be much better.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I plan on doing the same as I do with the T'Bolt. Get a charging dock with a place for a spare battery and switch batteries around 5 - 6 PM each day.
However, if the SIII give the same battery life as the T'bolt does now with the stock ROM I'll not need to do that, I turned on at 7 AM Tuesday morning and had 40% battery at 10:30 PM. It's NEVER done more than 12 hours with any other ROM, wondering if the last VZW update had something to help battery life? Who knows....
OK, days later plus one trip of several days and.... the battery life on the S3 is a little better than the T'Bolt. I'm getting a low battery warning maybe once a week or so. I usually take it off the charger at 7AM and hit the sack around 11PM, only VERY unusual use will trigger the low battery warning, otherwise I go to bed with maybe 25% remaining.
I consider it adequate, I'd like better but....
Hey guys,
I was looking into extended batteries for the Photon Q and noticed that the Droid 4 uses the same battery as our phone. Is it possible to use one of their aftermarket batteries?
I want a slim battery (not interested in making the phone bigger) and this one shows the best results from the D4 forums
Our original battery has some green tag on it as seen here:
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/ECQAAMXQUmFSjm2l/$_35.JPG
Is that just for NFC or something else? I don't mind losing NFC if that means I get more battery life
I got the mugen power battery to fit by removing some plastic and the back of the case, and of course NFC. Problem is it would get hot and slow down too often. Maybe that phone, maybe the battery, not sure, never tried it in another xt897.
I went ahead and ordered this gold slim battery
I'll be happy if it's even 10-15% better than a fresh stock battery
I will report back with my findings. In my current usage with one of the latest nightlies, I barely get 1-1.5 hours of screen on time when on mobile data and about 2 hours of screen on time when on wifi
While I've had decent luck with the gold batteries, they are actually just a factory Motorola battery with a shiny gold wrapper put on them. With that said though, at least from the ones I got they seem in every way to be genuine Motorola batteries, so still a good deal. I ended up getting a Mugen too and am working on making a case. I've got one molded up with some bondo but think I might end up trying to make one with super glue and baking soda like another poster did to make it more durable. I can still fit it in the vehicle dock by filing the USB port holder on the dock down a little bit.
If anyone uses the Mugen and happens to use Tasker, I wrote a tasker script to attempt to get an accurate battery percentage from the voltage readings and then update the OS if anyone wants. I also wrote one to keep the keyboard backlight more like the factory ROM instead of following the display backlight like it does in CM.
Just an update. Installed the battery today. I did partially peel off the gold sticker and it was all silver underneath. I know in other threads, the gold battery was reported to be a fake battery, or even stock battery with a new wrapper.
Initial results are good, but it's too early to tell. I will report back with updated usage. So far I'm not even sure battery stats are being reported correctly but it's a drastic increase in battery life.
So the gold battery has mixed results. The first few days I used it, the battery seemed pretty good. About 1.5 times longer than my shot original battery. However I noticed this battery does weird things in reporting numbers. Many times it will report 20% and then drop drastically fast to 0%.
Overall it's a decent battery but certainly not the capacity on the label. I would think a fresh stock battery would perform similarly without the weird drop off.
The biggest difference between my the gold and old stock battery is that it tends to sip power better. When the phone is not in use, the battery won't drain as fast. However when in use the battery drains just as fast. Maybe a little slower with gold, but not a huge difference.
My only concern is sourcing good batteries for this phone now. Even if I found a new stock battery, the unit itself has to be at least 3 years old. I'm sure motorola doesn't make new batteries for this phone anymore...
Wish we could frakenstein a battery for this phone

I could do that. With that LG battery or a different one that fits better? I don't love that it is thicker by up to 1mm.
I also saw some other eb41 batteries on the market (read my thread here for the 4 I've found ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-4/accessories/best-battery-t3341507). Not sure how good they are, only had the same mixed experience with the gold.

Lenmar still makes batteries for this phone (EB41, fits Droid 4 and Photon Q). I ordered 3 about 6 months ago and there was a 2 month lead time, so they obviously were newly manufactured batteries. I keep a spare in the fridge, the ones in my Droid 4 and Photon Q perform like new as expected.
Note: it won't come with the NFC antenna, but with great care this can be removed from the old battery and reattached.
I would like an extended battery too, but only if it came with a nicely fitting cover. Mugen makes one for the Droid 4 which could be used with the Photon Q, but they don't make a corresponding cover for the Photon Q.
Hope this helps.
P.S. which ROM do you guys use on this phone? I'm running CM 12.1 and it is fine, but when I have a few apps running like Google Music and Navigation, the phone gets super slow due to lack of memory. Under 'Apps -> Running' it shows 450 MB used just for System! I guess 1 GB phones are just passe at this point--or is there a better way to get more life out of this phone?
Cheers,
Mario
