I have a xoom tablet I bought for my wife about two years ago. We bought it from best buy, we bought the 3g model (I THINK, however it has a micro sd slot and sim card slot on the top but I have no idea how to tell if it is 3 or 4g without a data plan) in case we ever needed to have data service on it but choose to not to activate it through Verizon because of the cost. I did not send it back for the free upgrade to upgrade to 4g when Verizon offered it to me like 3 weeks after I bought it from best buy.
Anyway, my wife is a pen and paper person so the tablet sat on a shelf for two years and I have decided to take it and use it myself. It is updated to ICS and shows a 3g signal at the bottom even though I do not have an account with Verizon for it. I am wondering is that how it gets the OTA updates or do I have to update it manually? Also since I have zero intentions of ever using it on Verizon is there a way to update it to Jelly Bean using the WIFI only flash or some other method?

You can most definitely use the WiFi-only firmware on it, and you'll get updates faster as well. The reason your Xoom hasn't received the update to Jelly Bean yet is because, even though Google created one, and it leaked here on XDA back in early August, Verizon has still not completed testing and approval on the update, thus the Verizon Xoom is still stuck on Ice Cream Sandwich. The WiFi-only Xoom is not subject to carrier testing and approval and thus gets updates instantly.
If you want to flash the WiFi-only firmware on your Xoom, you'll need ADB and Fastboot set up on a PC. Is this something you already have? If not, PM me and I'll help you out.
PM sent and thank you very much
I'm in the same boat as scampbell70 so I'm eager to hear your answer. I believe that I have both ADB and Fastboot setup on my PC but would very much appreciate a copy of the PM you sent to scampbell70 if at all possible to make sure I do.
Thanks a lot

That's interesting. I have a 4g version and my wife has the 3g version, but we only use it over Wifi as well. I didn't think we could flash the wifi only Jelly bean update on a tablet with the 3G/4G radio.
I'd be interested in this as well. I have my computer setup correctly, as I've restored my xoom multiple times from custom roms back to stock. I love having my HBO Go, so I stay on the stock firmware.
I'd be interested in this writeup as well.
Actually, the easiest way to do this is to use RSD. Since so many people seem to be interested, I'll just write it up in this thread later tonight.
I had tried flashing my Verizon 4G Xoom MZ602 (originally a MZ600 3G xoom, but sent in for the upgrade) to the WIFI Only XOOM MZ604 Rom. I ran into some issues.
See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803219
So I'd be curious to know a "working" process, as well as an easier path back to stock VZW MZ602 Xoom ROM. When we're settled in the new house I'd like possibly try again.

The trick is flashing a firmware that won't overwrite your bootloader with something older than 1050. Writeup coming soon.
Please post all questions in the Q & A section. Thanks! Thread moved.

Got tied up with work tonight so the writeup will have to wait until tomorrow. Sorry everyone!

Flashing MZ604 "Tervigon" WiFi-Only Firmware onto MZ600 and MZ602 Devices
Going to begin with the typical disclaimer, I'm not responsible for anything that goes awry or if you brick your tablet, yadda yadda.
This is actually a fairly simple process. Here's what you'll need:
1. RSD Lite installed on a Windows PC. Download here.
2. The IMM76 SBF image. Download here.
3. Your USB Cable.
Once you have all three of these things, follow the steps below. NOTE: THIS WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON YOUR XOOM SO BACK UP ANYTHING YOU WANT BEFORE DOING THIS!!!!
1. Unzip the VZW_MZ604_signed_IMM76.combo.sbf.gz file into a folder of your choice. You'll end up with a .sbf file.
2. Install RSD Lite.
3. Plug your Xoom into USB.
4. Power the Xoom off, then turn it on. As soon as you see the Motorola Dual Core logo, count to 3 in your head at a reasonable speed and then press volume down. On screen you'll see the words "Android Recovery". Press volume down again and the words will change to "RSD". When you see "RSD" on your screen, press volume up. This will boot the Xoom into RSD mode.
5. Open RSD Lite on your PC. Open up the SBF file you unzipped back in step 1. In the lower part of the RSD window, it should show that your Xoom is connected via USB.
6. Press "Start" and let it go through the process. When the RSD status (in the RSD Lite window) changes to "rebooting phone", time to be alert. Watch the tablet reboot, and as soon as it does, repeat Step 4...meaning count to 3, press volume down, then press volume down again until you see RSD on screen, then press volume up. At that point the status in the RSD Lite window should change to "PASS". We're almost done.
7. Hold down power and volume up at the same time. This will reboot the tablet. Do the count to three thing again, press volume down. When you see "Android Recovery" on screen, press volume up. This will boot you into stock recovery. When you see the Android with the exclamation point, press and hold power, then press volume up. You'll get a recovery menu. Navigate the menu using volume up/down. Highlight "Wipe Data/Factory reset", then press power. That will wipe data.
8. When the data wipe is complete, you will return to the menu. Highlight "Wipe Cache" and press power. This will wipe your cache.
9. When the cache wipe is complete, highlight "Reboot Now" in the menu and press power.
10. Your Xoom should boot into the stock WiFi-only build 4.0.4/IMM76. Once you get it set up, check for updates and it'll begin downloading the Jelly Bean 4.1.1/JRO03H update. When it's done you'll get an OTA notification on screen. Install the OTA and you're all set.
I'll do my best to help with any problems that arise, but in all honesty you shouldn't be doing this unless you're comfortable fixing this stuff and searching XDA!
Happy flashing!
is it ok to use mz604 version on my Verizon mz600 ?
Hello I have a Verizon Xoom but it is a mz600. I did not send it in for the lte update. The Verizon data plan is super expensive.
I read this and i wanted to attempt this on my Verizon Xoom. It is still sick and NOT rooted.
thank you for any help

These exact instructions can be done on a completely stock MZ600 (non-upgraded) Verizon Xoom even if the bootloader is locked. Follow them to the letter and you should be fine. Just keep in mind that you will still lose all your data on your device, so make a backup of any documents, photos, music, etc. that you want before you proceed!
thank you oldblue910
Thank you I will do this as soon as I get home from work today. I have been using Bluetooth DUN. Very slow but working with what I have until now
p.s. to confirm this takes the place of ADB and Fast boot?

So after converting to "wifi-only" if we wanted to revert to stock, Verizon firmware, what is safe to flash with?

Which firmware would that be?

For WiFi-only firmware, it would be anything that's 3.2.1/HTK75D or later.
For MZ602 Verizon LTE firmware, it'd be anything that's 3.2.2/HLK75C or later.
says failed any idea ?
hi oldblue910 i followed your steps and after about 10 minutes ( stuck on step 6 ) . It the said
" Failed flashing process [0000]: Error getting unit information. Device API Error: 0xE0030009 Command: RQHW (0xE0831009)
have any idea?
im thinking the problem i havea is that i have a mz600 and the file i downloaded to flash is a MZ604 imm76

Yesterday afternoon I attempted the Bionic Path Saver update with 901 and Liberty 2.0. Due to issues with flashing the Webtop image and some flaws in the script I wound up with a dead phone. After hacking up a charger and over 12 hours of experimentation I was able to get the phone and and was able to update it. I do not want anyone to have to go through what I went through so I am posting this. I do not take credit for the files, I only came up with the combination. All download links lead to the creators. Let me know how this works out and of course always create backups before performing this.
**Things you will need**
A FULLY charged battery
My SafeBionicPathSaver_v2.rar - http://www.filesharesite.com/files/201201/1327968223SafeBionicPathSaver_v2.rar.html
RSDLite 5.5 - In this package
Motorola Drivers - In this package
flashme.zip - In this package
Liberty 2.0 (.901 OTA Compatible) - http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13096-901-radio-working-with-custom-rom/
bionicbootstrap.apk - http://droidmodderx.com/bionic/bootstrap-recovery-for-the-bionic/
**Instructions**
1.) Install RSDLite 5.5 and Motorola Drivers (32-bit or 64-bit accordingly).
2.) Extract flashme.zip to any location on your computer.
3.) Extract SafeBionicPathSaver_v2.rar (ME) files to any location on your computer.
4.) Copy bionicbootstrap.apk and copy the Liberty 2.0 (.901 OTA Compatible) ZIP to the root directory of your SD card.
5.) Connect phone to computer, set phone to USB Debugging Mode, and set it to Charge Only. You will also need to allow "Unknown sources" in your application settings.
6.) Go to the directory from Step 3 and run SBPSscript.bat. Let it run and wait for Phase 1 to complete.
7.) Phone should now be at the bootloader. Open up RSDLite and browse to the XML in the directory from Step 2. Flash this and the phone should reboot, it will take a while.
8.) The phone should now be at the Android setup screen. *The phone has been reflashed and reset, you now need to follow STEP 5 again to continue*. You may now contune following the prompts in the SBPSscript.bat script. Watch for any errors as directed. The phone should end up booted into stock recovery.
9.) At the recovery menu you are going to install updates manually. First do update893.zip, then do update901.zip. Make sure there were no errors then reboot the phone.
10.) You are now at version .901 and should still be rooted. To test root you can try and update Superuser by going to Superuser's menu and updating the binary. If it fails with a permission issue, you do not have root and have to start over.
***IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO REMAIN ON THE STOCK ROOTED .901 ROM YOU CAN STOP HERE. THE REST OF THE STEPS ARE FOR GETTING LIBERTY3 2.0 INSTALLED.***
11.) Now install bionicbootstrap.apk, open the application, and press the "Bootstrap Recovery" button (grant any SU access). This will install the Clockwork Recovery ROM and would fail if you were not still rooted.
12.) Now click the "Reboot Recovery" button. You will now be in the Clockwork Recovery Mod.
13.) At this menu you will need to wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, and format /system.
14.) Now you will select "install zip from sdcard" using the volume and power buttons and choose the Liberty ZIP you uploaded in Step 6.
15.) After this is done you can reboot the phone and you will have a Liberty3 2.0 / .901 Radio Bionic!

You're welcome, a user just notified me of a typo "fixme = flashme" and I have updated that in my ZIP and in the post. The same user also told me that the flashme.zip file isn't available for download at the moment. I would host it myself, but I know that within 30 minutes my pipe would be saturated. Hopefully this link comes back up soon, if not I will find a way to host it somewhere.

I believe you can, but you MAY have to flash a .901 CDT image after you flash back to .839. I came back from a failed root attempt on .901, but I was also playing with different CDTs. If you try it out you can definately get it working, may or may not have to flash that .901 CDT.
I haven't able to have any success with this. I tried it twice but it keeps hanging on the Motorola screen. This is after I flash flashme (step 9) and when it goes to reboot. I've waited both time for 15-20 minutes but nothing. Is there something I'm missing? I have RSDLite 5.5 and Drivers 5.4

Well since you have rebooted you now have to manually get it into the fastboot mode. Turn the phone off, hold both volume buttons down, then hold the power button down for a second or two and the phone should enter fast loader mode. At this point you can connect it to the computer and RSDLite will see the phone and you can resume. Let me know if this works for you...
so I'm taking this doesn't work... files aren't even there
all i need is the last one... BPS_Safe_Scripts

I am in the same boat. I believe since the ROM is built on .886 that is what it is going to report. The radio, however, has already been updated and Liberty doesn't contain a radio and therefor would not roll it back. The version of Liberty used in here is only patched with libraries to handle the .901 radio. Since the upgrade I have not had the contant data drops and 3g/4g switching that I had before. The only time the data really drops now is when I'm going through a tunnel or something like that.

The governement is getting out of control with the piracy protection... I can make one complete package that would be much smaller than all of them combined, but if I host it I know I will be out of bandwidth in 30 min (it would still be fairly large).

Which files did you find were missing? I was able to download two of the larger ones with no problem.
The flash me zip was not available and one other file was blocked on two of the sites and on a third it called for four hours to download. I want to get off the 901 system and downgrade so I can run the ics ROM. I tried once and was bricked for 24 hours until I found the bin swap method to get back to 893 from the motorola files using rsdlite.

I am running into the same problem. I have re-ran the RSDLite script, it finishes but the phone never goes to the Android Welcome Screen. It stays on the Motorola Dual Core start-up screen
This morning in my half-awake state I accidentally pressed "OK" to my phone asking me to go ahead with the (I'm guessing) 2.3.6 update. I KNEW I would end up doing something stupid like that. GRR!!
Anyway, the phone then launched itself into a white screen with blue text saying that it is doing the update, but nothing happens and it appears to be frozen.
I am rooted and was trying to avoid this update; like I said, I was half-awake.
I can't even get it to boot into download/recovery mode, it always goes straight to the white screen. Hopefully this isn't a double post; I checked here and google first but couldn't find anything for this phone. I'm really at a loss here. I have Titanium Backup and I got an external SD card, but I'm not sure if I actually backed up the apps to the external card (new to TB). I did a Kies contacts backup a few days ago so that at least is safe.
Is there any hope for my phone? If I can just get it back to a working state, I can live with my apps' data being erased. Any help appreciated.
Thank you!
Doh... sorry to hear that.. are you also running a custom rom, or customized ATT rom (I have the stock rom from the developers forums over the standard root after having tried a few custom roms).
I got the update message as well this morning, but I postponed it for 8 hours, however I am unable to get rid of the stupid notification, and am curious if after the 8 hours, it will force the update or let me postpone it agian (that will get annoying fast if I cannot disable the OTA update..)
I'd like to know how to cancel the update as well. I have it sitting in my notification bar. >_<

I'm still running stock 2.3.5. All I've had time to do is root and TB apps, haven't had the chance to play around with ROMs yet for this phone.
Yeah I postponed it for 8 hours, too. The 8hrs must have expired right as my alarm went off because the "Install this update?" message popped up and I hit it, thinking it was the snooze button -_-
Let me know if there's any way to get off of this screen my phone is stuck on! And then disable the obnoxious message for good.
Thanks again =)

I have about 10-15 times since it first happened this morning. I also tried taking out the SIM and microSD cards. It's the only way I can get it to stay off to try to boot to recovery mode (which it still won't boot into); if I hold the power button to turn it off it just resets back into the white Software Update Screen (won't stay off).
Has anyone successfully applied this update yet?
Any other ideas? I appreciate the feedback so far!
Similar thing happened to me. I pulled the battery and booted in to CWM just fine. Restored from there.

I don't believe I have CWM installed? How would I have known if I did? When I volume up + volume down + power and wait until the Samsung logo comes up it boots back to the white screen. Maybe I'm doing that process wrong?
Same thing happened to me this morning!
almost identical story
I've tried literally every combination to get to the reboot screen. ugh :'(

I haven't been rooting as much as some of the guys here, but I think if you take the battery out and it won't boot back even into recovery, you're hard-bricked and you're gonna have to start from scratch with a fresh stock rom. Go to download mode (turn off, hold vol up + down, insert powered usb cable) and put a stock rom back on using odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348
You will basically get back to what your phone was when you took it out of the box and you'll have to install everything, your data (other than the data that is on a microSD card) won't be there.
If you have a backup that you did with CWM, then you can restore the backup after you do all this.
I think you got unlucky with the worst case scenario of what shouldn't happen during an update.
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try when I get home from work and will let you guys know how it goes.
For the future, is it generally recommended to de-root before doing any straight carrier update? Or is this just a total fluke that some of us are experiencing?
Will adb recognize your phone? If it does just adb reboot recovery

Go to download mode (turn off, hold vol up + down, insert powered usb cable) and put a stock rom back on using odin.

AMAZING!! Thank you so much! Not only is my phone up and working but the update has installed!
I learned the following:
-you pretty much need a pc (not a mac) to do all the downloads correctly. I used a friends.
-to get your phone into download mode when it's frozen from the update, you have to hold down either vol + AND vol - (or just vol -) as well as the power button, simultaneously hold down power and also simultaneously plug in the usb. Then let go of the power button and remain holding down one or the two volume buttons.
THIS WAS JUST WITH MY SKYROCKET EXPERIENCE
I'm so happy. Thank you LucidMike
This just happened to my friend's phone. White screen no matter what. Stock everything, too. She's pretty bummed that there's no way to recover the videos and pictures on her phone before resetting it. Apparently she went to AT&T and they couldn't figure it out. They called tech support for her and THEY couldn't figure it out. She's currently on the phone with Samsung, but I doubt they'll be able to help either.

AHHH!! Tell her to hang up the phone right now!! Use this method to fix her phone!! All of her data will still be there after it's done! After the process is complete, back it up to a computer (enable USB storage and just copy + paste and I used Kies to copy my contacts) and THEN do a full factory reset (reset recommended by everyone to ensure smooth function of phone). The method in the link will return her to the original stock version; I believe it may trip a counter that AT&T can use to determine if you've hacked your phone, but if you want a working phone...and there's also a chance that it WON'T trip the counter (some people say it did and some say it hasn't).
EDIT: Pictures and videos that I took with the phone are saved in /sdcard/DCIM/Camera, so you know where to copy her stuff from.

I'm trying to fix my boyfriend's phone (he actually didn't hack/root it or anything...but yesterday's update messed up his phone so it was stuck in the "SOFTWARE UPDATE" and "Loading..." frozen white screen). We tried taking out the battery, restarting it, everything. I tried your method of holding all three buttons while plugging in the USB and then letting go of the power button. What do you press when it asks you if you want to continue (up vol +) or cancel (vol -)? I chose vol -, and when it took me back to the white screen, I did it again and pressed vol +. Now I'm on a ODIN MODE page...will this affect his warranty or anything? What do I do next?
You need to have odin on your pc and the stock .tar and flash it. Here go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=1509978
Read carefully follow directions exactly

Thanks! I read on the first page of the thread that it needs to be rooted though? This phone is brand new and never been rooted or hacked...will doing this void the warranty or anything unpleasant? (I'm the one that likes hacking my devices like my Nook Color...my boyfriend is a little more paranoid and would rather have it stay covered under warranty )
No actually. Thats incorrect..the stock tar. Is just as it sounds. The stock firmware the phone comes with.....dont need to be rooted to use odin. Actually if u odn the stock tar. It removes root.

EDIT: Nevermind! Plugged it into a different USB port (COM:6) and it worked flawlessly. All data is still on phone and it works like new! Thank you!
Device:
Droid Razr MAXX HD - Stock Factory Phone - Unrooted, nothing been touched. - VERIZON
What happened:
Updated to JB last week. Was a little too glitchy for my liking so I was going to factory data reset and clear the cache.
Problem 1: Failed Reset
Hit Factory Data Reset, phone starts up green android on screen with twirling blue stuff. Progress bar at bottom. Sits there for hours and nothing ever happens. Pulled SD card to see if that helped and tried again. Nothing.
Problem 2: Can't get into Recovery
I power the phone on and hold vol + & vol -, select recovery then get red moto logo then the same screen from problem 1. I hit Vol - then Vol + to try to get into recovery and it doesn't work. It just says ge 0/0 Formatting /data... Again, nothing.
Problem 3: It's reset, but if you shut the phone off you get problem 1 again.
Power on with vol + & - and I select any other option the phone will boot up and will activate for the first time. Sometimes it will find the network, sometimes the network and battery symbol will have question marks. The problem is, when the phone shuts off or restarts you get problem 1 again. Then if I select any of the options with vol+ & - it resets the whole phone.
Any ideas on how I could fix this other than throwing it on the pavement? All this from a factory data reset on a stock unmolested phone.
Glad to see it's not just me then man. Same problem with my Razr HD. Mine was rooted, but stock apart from that. I had been worried that perhaps it was because I'd been too dumb to remove (or better yet, actually protect) bits and pieces like SuperUser and they were annoying it or something.
Get exactly the same problems as you, haven't yet been able to figure out what's wrong. Called Motorola, erm, no, I'm not able to send my phone in, I kinda need it!
Just a note though with the first part of your problem...

I'll bet you that if you watch really closely, just before the screen goes blank, you'll see the android laying down with the red exclamation above him. At least I do.
Have also experimented with all the boot options, and also tried redoing the reset from the settings menu. No dice.
I'm guessing that because you've got a Maxx, you'll have a totally different service provider too.

Thanks for the advice but unfortunately I don't have the android with the !. If I did, I would probably be able to get into recovery. Good luck!
Have you tried to fastboot the phone?
You might lose your data, but you've already tried a factory reset. Here's what to do:
1) Download the Motorola USB drivers from here - https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
2) Download RSDLite 6.0 from here - https://hotfile.com/dl/174582400/60ad26d/RSDLite_6.0.rar.html
3) I take it you're on VZW, so download the Jelly Bean fastboot file from here - http://sbf.droid-developers.org/vanquish/VZW_XT926_4.1.1_9.8.1Q_39_VQW_CFC.xml.zip
4) Boot the phone up in fastboot mode - Turn phone off completely, on power on hold VOL+ and VOL- and press power, that should load a menu. Select "AP Fastboot"
5) Plug the phone into the PC and it should detect in RSD Lite, load the file you downloaded and flash the phone
This shouldn't ruin your warranty status, but nothing is official. I've never done this with the newer Motorola HD phones (since I don't have one yet...) but I have done this many times on many different Motorola Devices like RAZR (OG) and Droid 4, and Droid 3, etc. I'm pretty sure it'll work fine for you.
If you have anymore troubles let me know.
Good luck!
This info should be in a sticky, or a FAQ or something, very useful.

That means we need the right drivers. Try downloading the other USB drivers from the Motorola site. Also what OS are you using?

Yes... I'm really not surprised. I have had major driver issues with Android devices on Windows 8.
When you plug in the phone through fastboot mode, can you take a screenshot of your device manager? Try to double click on the device and locate the Motorola fastboot device.

Smart man.... That was the first thing I did was look in device manager and it was a mess while the phone is in fastboot. Computer recognizes the phone fine while it's powered booted up and on. I can get RDLite to find it and try to start and force the file to the phone but the moment it goes into fastboot it fails every time. I got Verizon sending me another phone today.... I appreciate your help on this... I'd buy you a beer if I could! :highfive:

Same issue for me after OTA. Just processed the OTA as normal and phone will not climb out of the Red M loop. Non rooted, locked device. Attempted to utilize RSD with a few flash files and no luck. Very inexperienced with this. Sorry to be so dense, just looking for any direction possible.

i wish i could help you but without knowing exactly what the ota flashed before failing, any advice i give has the real possibility of making your phone worse or possibly perma bricked. the problem is you are locked and we dont yet have a fxz for kk.
that being said, if you still want to try and fix it against my advice i will tell you what to try but I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS BRICKS YOUR PHONE OR MAKES IT WORSE IN ANY WAY.
download this xml file http://www.mediafire.com/view/p217akcxwmijcr7/VZW_XT926_4.1.2_9.8.1Q_62_VQW_MR-2_VQW_CFC_DOWN.xml
download the 9.30.1 ota from sbf droid devs
extract it to a folder and DELETE the xml file, then copy the one above into the folder
make sure you have the latest rsd, i think its 6.1.5 (not positive)
load the xml file into rsd and flash as usual
if this does not work, there is no way to fix your phone until the kk fxz is leaked, assuming this doesnt make it worse.
6.1.6 is the newest RSDLite I've seen.
Go here if you haven't applied the OTA yet and your bootloader is locked.
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/45494-how-to-xt926-upgrade-to-kitkat-ota/
If you have applied the OTA and you're locked, don't do it. You'll have to wait for the FXZ to come out. Otherwise, it will brick even further.
If you have applied the OTA AND your bootloader is UNLOCKED, then you can use the tool to flash back to stock 9.30.1.
I too am bricked. unrooted and locked. Ran the ota and when it reset, it now hangs at the red M. Can get into fast boot and recovery. Tried factory restore and wipe cache. Once I did that my phone now randomly boots to andy all opened up, waiting for me to press the buttons to go into recovery. If I leave it like that, it just reboots after a time and does it all over again . I'm going to assume the only way forward is the xfz file? Any body have an idea of when that might become available and where about I can pick it up? I.E. which forum might have it and will it be a new thread?

This has been posted many times. When installing the OTA manually via recovery, a few things happen:
The first time you apply the OTA in recovery, it replaces the recovery with a new recovery and reboots the phone. This new recovery requires a new key combo to get into it. The new key combo is vol-up + power.
So, after you attempt to apply the OTA the first time, you need to be around so when it reboots into the Andy screen, you can use the new key combo. Otherwise, if you leave it alone, it will reboot and then you'll see the red Moto logo which means you'll have to reboot the phone and then hold vol-up + power to get the boot menu and select "Recovery" and then go to the next step.
After getting back into the new recovery, you must apply the OTA again so it can continue to upgrade your phone. After this, you'll be upgraded to Kit Kit.

Right. By reading your earlier posts instructions I got into recovery. That is how I was able to factory reset and wipe cache. I'm talking about AFTER I did all that, instead of just being hung at red m screen, it hangs for a few seconds, then flickers, hangs a few more seconds, and then goes into andy screen. If I don't touch it for a few minutes, it reboots, and that same process starts over, ending with the andy screen again...Its like it WANTS me to be in recovery to fix it .
I noticed you also said to others that us lot are pretty much screwed until the fxz file is out, which I assume is this OTA as a zip so we can flash with recovery? Any idea when that will be coming out? and where should I look for it once its out?
Heck, because I was unrooted and locked and it was the official OTA from verizon, maybe I should go in to them and demand they replace my phone with the moto x. Though, I rather liked my razr hd and don't quite wanna give up on it...

No, the FXZ is the full kit-kat image, not an update like the OTA. The FXZ can be used to flash your phone back to full stock, whether you are locked or not. If you are locked, then you can only flash the version that is currently on your phone or newer. You cannot flash back to a previous version unless your bootloader is unlocked.
The ota is used to only update a previous version to the current version, in this case from JB to KK, but once it's applied, you cannot apply it again since you are already upgraded to that version. It's only an upgrade, not a full image like an FXZ.

I see, makes sense. Every days a school day I suppose. Thanks for the info. Guess I have to decide to either wait for the FXZ or go to verizon and see if they can get me a new phone.
Same thing happened to my wife, completely stock now stuck at red m. After calling verizon they suggested the factory reset which just gives you a boot to dead android guy to get into recovery on every boot. Then after a couple minutes just reboots and does the same thing, stuck in a loop. They then said it's not their software, rather Motorola's, so Verizon's only recourse is to sell me an overpriced refurb or upgrade to the edge plan. Screw them. I said unacceptable and they gave me a number for Motorola. Moto said that they put in a request to extend my factory warranty because it was the software update that caused the issue and they will let me know tomorrow. I understand stuff happens, but this is not acceptable when their harassing update causes thee issue. I knew I should've unlocked the boot loader on it when I had the chance.

Then you're almost there. At the "dead android" screen, press and hold vol up and then press power and then release both buttons. This gets you into recovery.
At this point, reinstall the OTA via the recovery so it can start into the 2nd stage and then you'll be done.

Did you download it to your phone? If so, it needs to be on your external SD card and you choose the option to install from there. You'll have to navigate to where you stored it on the external SD card.
If you didn't download it, then you should be able to push it via ADB PUSH when in the recovery. Just hook up your phone to your PC and do it that way. Just obtain the OTA from this thread. Somewhere, someone provided a link to it. Download it to your PC and then do an adb push to the external SD card of the OTA and then install it that way.

Thanks for the tips. I must have done something wrong when I installed adb, I could not see the phone with the adb devices command, yet I could see the phone in the Matt utility as well as in RSD Lite. I'll give it a shot again, can't hurt. Called Moto and they escalated it and are sending me a replacement device.
First off, an eternally grateful thanks to @shabbypenguin for compiling what seems to be the missing link to flashing a custom recovery. Please direct all thanks to him. Check out his profile for a donation link!

It may not work for you.
I cannot provide support in case anything goes wrong.
There are virtually NO ROMS out that I'm aware of that are able to work with Sprint service. My tab is out of contract so I'm going to be working on loading wifi only ROMS.

ODIN
The shabbypenguin magical image. @shabbypenguin
ATT Espresso ChildOfTheHorm clockwork recovery
Root. Cydia Impactor works on this tablet to root it. Install SuperSU and Busybox off the market once it's rooted.
Optional (Recommended):
Stock Recovery Image..
Return to Stock Thread for a just in case scenario.
Steps:
Make sure drivers are installed and ADB can see your tab.
Reboot into download mode by either typing "adb reboot download" or by holding volume down & power when the device is off.
Open ODIN. Usually do this with administration privelages to negate any shennanigins.
Device should show up on the top left. Click AP / PDA and select "espresso10spr-cwm-test1.tar". Don't click start yet!
Get ready to hold volume up. Auto Reboot is selected by default. Don't click Start yet! When the flash is done the tablet will reboot. You want to go into the recovery on the first reboot or the flash may not take.
Get ready to hold volume +, press Start. When the tablet turns off, HOLD volume +. It will say booting recovery, act like it took, and turn off. This is the voodoo feature of the ShabbyPenguin file.
Turn the device back on, and reboot into download mode again. This time selecting the "cwm_recovery_espresso10att_childofthehorn.tar.md5" file. Same thing, get ready to hold the Volume + button when the tablet reboots.
Viola. Violin. Vegasaurious Rex. Clockwork should boot. At least it did for mine.
If anything goes wrong, there's a link in the optional list to revert your tablet back to stock. As well as the RECOVERY ONLY stock image you can flash with ODIN.
Some footnotes, sometimes with my tablet it doesn't like to turn on after a failed flash. A workaround for this is to hold the power for around 3-5 seconds, wait one second, and then hold Volume -. You should be presented with an option to go to download mode or restart the tablet. Select restart the tablet to get it working again.

Flashing the recovery worked for me. I can't wait to hear from you as to what custom roms are ok to flash.
Thanks a bunch!
Anybody find any ROMS yet?
I so hoping someone has made some progress with this.
Thanks to all those who have gotten us this far!

It's beena slow process. All the ROMs I have tried don't really do well. Wifi not working, that kind of thing. I was waiting to see if more roms came out to try. I'll be checking again in the next few days.

First off, an eternally grateful thanks to @shabbypenguin for compiling what seems to be the missing link to flashing a custom recovery. Please direct all thanks to him. Check out his profile for a donation link!
Disclaimer:
As with anything non stock, only you are responsible if something goes wrong.
These are the steps I used for my Sprint Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and it worked for me.
It may not work for you.
I cannot provide support in case anything goes wrong.
There are virtually NO ROMS out that I'm aware of that are able to work with Sprint service. My tab is out of contract so I'm going to be working on loading wifi only ROMS.
Backup your shizzle. Expect to lose data and you won't be caught off guard.
MultiPart:
Install CWM
Compatable ROM information
Requirements:
Appropriate Samsung Drivers

I just inherited one of these suckers and would love to see upgraded past Jelly Bean. What ROMS did you have success flashing? I'm not seeing much out there about flashing this device besides what is linked to this post, and no specifics were ever mentioned, just that it might be possible with some serious bugs. Can you point me in the right direction?
