[Q] A little advice please... - Acer Iconia A700 and A510

OK, if some of the gurus on this forum can give me some advice, I would certainly appreciate it!
My A700 was rooted and bootloader unlocked. I could boot to recovery, could see the unlocked script, etc,but since I wasn't doing CWM, it didn't work, it went to the "belly up Android guy with a red triangle, but at least I do know it tried.
To get back to factory stock, I flashed the "Acer_A700_AV043.RV00RC00_AV043.RV07RC06_PA_CU S1" My tablet went back to an "unroot" and "locked stock" bootloader, which was my goal.
Now, the question. Did I really manage to lock my bootloader back? Or is it still unlocked but not showing the script, etc.? The reason I ask is that I'm sure I won't get the JB update if my bootloader is unlocked. If it is unlocked, what are the methods to getting the tablet TOTALLY back to stock to get the update?
Sorry if this appears to be a "dumb question", but I am not an Android expert as many of you on the forum are.
Thanks in advance for nay guidance you can give me....

You are probably ok. Typically, if the bootloader is unlocked, it will say so on boot.

Thanks (again)...

Technically it looks legit.
Some of what shows up in settings, is taken from the build.prop file. Yes, we as modders can change a couple of things. Also, your kernel build, comes from the kernel itself. For example, I can change you ID, to not show the specific build. I can do this in build.prop. This is useful for modders who want to keep track of what revision rom you are running. Kernel Devs do the same.
But from what I see, it looks normal. 4.0.4 with the kernel revision, Note, that changes to the zimage of boot.img, will not reflect changes on the kernel itself. The boot.img has different parts. Example, we can change zimage, to include things such as /system remount (so you don't need a root app), initd, IO tweaks, CIF support, and a couple other things. And, we don't need to rename the kernel build.

Thanks!

[Q] Samsung Exhilarate stock tar file.

I heard that shabby was working on it but the thread they were posting in just stalled out, So has anyone heard any news of a stock tar file for Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate being worked on?
we have pretty much everything except the stock recovery image. need someone to mod kernel for root so w can get stock recovery off an unmodified phone. I've tried but really don't know what I'm doing.

Hi Nanition:
As j3r3goss stated, Shabby needs someone to help out. We need an unrooted phone so that we can grab the original recovery that comes on the phone. If you have an unrooted exhilarate and can donate some time/effort, Shabby would be the best person to contact. You can reach him by going to http://webchat.irondust.net/?channels=hitsquad Just type in his name (Shabbypenguin) and if he's lurking he'll respond.
Shabby had someone volunteer, but he said it didn't work out (no details as to why or what happened).

Unfortunatly when I was rooting the phone something weird happened and nearly hard bricked it, but I am currently running Tmobile blaze 4g on it with no sound or calling. So hopefully sometime soon someone will be able to help Shabby get a stock tar figured out and ran.

Shabby has the system.img and boot.img from my phone. Contact him and see if he can explain how to get back to a stock image. Also, if he can't help, get w/ j3r3goss about this as he had the very same issue, but I think he got his back to running the way it's supposed to.
Hope that helps!

stock tar
Here's what I used to get the stock OS back, minus recovery of course. The tar contains the system and boot and can be pushed via Odin. For some reason when I had the radio files in the tar it would fail in Odin so I found a script to update those via CWM. I'm not sure what all needs to be done but since mine was extremely messed up I pushed the system tar via Odin then booted into CWM Recovery flashed the radio.zip then performed factory reset x3, format cache x3, format dalvik cache x3 and fixed permissions. It took a bit but booted just and I have had no issues.
You will need to perform a touch key fw update after you boot recovery, but everything else appears to be fully functional. We still need to get some assistance in getting the boot.img rooted so that we can get a dump of the stock recovery.img.
Hope this helps.
Obviously these are to be used at your own risk.

I am about to start working on a custom System ROM for this phone. What Apps should be included, what apps should be removed (AT&T crapware of course - but what else)?
I want to make a basic one with just a few key apps, and a more advance one for the ultimate tweaker/hacker.
All suggestions (but please be polite) are welcome!
We also still don't have the original restore.img - so if you want to help w/ that, let me know, I may have an angle that we can get it with.

Right now the biggest things for me are bloat and launcher. Everything AT&T needs to go. Is there a way to seperate Google apps or do they pretty much install together? Ther are way to many Google apps that I don't use or ever care to use. Not a big fan of the TW so I'm using ADW, but that can be easily changed by the user. One thing I have been trying to find is support for volume rocker music controls. I use this thing for for music all the time and hate having to skip tracks from the screen.

j3r3: The Google apps can all be installed separately AFAIK. What's TW? I'm familiar with ADW so I assume it's a launcher?
I think there is an app that does the vol control switch, but I don't know what it is off the top of my head.

I take absolutely no credit for this, I merely tried it and it does infact work for our phone as well. I was at 42 BTW.

Hey bud. Does shabby need som1 to send him a phone? I got one of these phones. Stock of course. I'd like to root it. I'm hip to flashing. I've got the note running flapjaxxx rom. Samsung s2 running blu kuban. So anyhow. What does he need?
I don't know what's going on with Shabby. As far as I know there are some people trying to get ahold of him to test his rooted kernel and he's not responding nor has he posted his rooted kernel.

I don't know if Shabby needs a phone or not. I personally, haven't heard from Shabby since a couple of weeks ago.
You can always go to his site and PM him and make the offer.
I was actually hoping my wife would buy one of these, and I was going to try to grab the stock restore, but she opted for a Galaxy S II SkyRocket instead (larger screen, more memory, thinner, etc. - but she did like that my phone is smaller (edge-to-edge)).
Anyway, we're pretty much stuck at the moment. We don't have the original restore, and we can't seem to get it.
I think I know what needs to be done, but I'd have to consult w/ Shabby and j3r3. If you're willing to try yourself, you need to get the rooted ROM, and get it installed on your phone. Then, as I understand it, you need to adb the phone and dd a restore.img. Once we have that, we can then install custom ROMs and revert back to stock if needed.
Other than that, we have full root, and I have been able to uninstall AT&T crapware, Samsung Crapware, and also most of the other system stuff that isn't needed/wanted.
The next step is, as I find time, to create a minimal ROM that has only what is necessary for the phone to function. There will be a couple of other apps (to verify root, and allow you access to all files and system settings), but other than that - that'll be it.
Let me know if you think you'd be willing to be a guinea pig on this - and you should let j3r3 and shabby know as well (if shabby is still interested).

Got the Original Kernel and Platform.tar files
So, I found, DL'd and am currently uploading the original Samsung Exhilarate SGH-i577 Opensource Kernel and Platform Files... Good find? I think (hope) so.
If you need them, go here: https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B7...VmckQwRnc/edit
You can DL any of the files I have posted there, or you can just DL the entire zip here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7nWFHy_HCE7aTBEbF83T2Z0Mzg11.
Or you can just them from where I did: The files were DL'd from the Samsung Open Source website: http://opensource.samsung.com/index.jsp - just do a search for "i577".

GHORR: Here's the deal: As of right now, there is no way to unlock your phone for use with other carriers unless you can convince AT&T to send you the unlock code. To do that (I know this from experience), you'll need to be able to explain why you want it unlocked to them. Read this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812976
I know that doesn't help. However, you can also do a search for "SIM Unlock" - there are some phones that have had their system files hacked and you might be able to unlock it that way. Note, I am in no way responsible for anything that happens to your phone. This is at your own risk.
Good luck

Thanks for replying - but I thought that by flashing the ROM it removes the lock, did I get it wrong?

Rom Question.

Okay,
I'm hoping that I'm posting this in the right place, since I'm new here, but here it goes.
I was wondering how to tell if I am able to use a rom. I know the obvious that it has to be for my phone, but what other important things (such as firmware) should I look at to make sure a rom is right for my phone. If there's a thread on this already, or if this is the wrong section please just point me in the right direction.
If the ROM is made for your phone, then it will work completely. If it was made for a phone in the same family of devices as yours, it may work fully or partially. For example, I have the LG P505. I can use any ROM made for the P505. I can use any ROM made for the P500 (which opens the doors to dozens of choices, from only a handful), but the screen driver is wrong, so the colors are messed up, and once the screen goes black, it doesn't come back (lol). To solve it, I have to flash a kernel made specifically for my phone (P505) after flashing the ROM.
If you have a flashable kernel .zip for your phone, you can use any ROM made for the whole family of devices of which your phone is a part.

Just read the OP of the ROM thread (all of it; more than once). That's where you should find information on compatibility. If its in your device's section, its quite likely it will be compatible. But, you still need to read in case it requires a specific recovery, etc. to be flashed and work correctly.
Thanks for the replies! I've been having problems with boot loops and I was wondering if it was a compatibility issue. where would I get my hands on my phones kernel? I have an HTC sensation currently running sence-o-manic btw

If you go to sensation forum instead of posting in general there will be A LOT more people there to help you.
Once you get there, read stickied thread by malybru called something like "great starting point for new sensation users" in Sensation general, and if you still have questions after that, go to Sensation Q&A , find another stickied thread called "Help Thread" and ask there.

[ROM][ODIN] P500VPBMB3 Sprint 4.1.2 Firmware

P500VPBMB3 Sprint 4.1.2 Firmware
For some unusual reason there is little to no development for the SPH-P500 and absolutely ZERO official firmware available for the Sprint model. This means, if you soft brick the tablet trying to install something you should not have, you have no easy way of getting back to the stock firmware. In addition, getting to the 4.1.2 version of the firmware is a royal pain due to the massive amount of "PATCH CHECKS" and assert checks built in to the OTA update. This means any deodexed system or a number of other reasons will be rejected if you try the OTA update while on non-official or approved firmware. So, for your convenience, I have compiled a simple ODIN-Flashable TAR file which will jet you up to speed installing the latest official Sprint 4.1.2 firmware.
Details:
P500VPBMB3 Stock w/ MB3 Modem
Package Includes: BOOT, RECOVERY, SYSTEM, MODEM AND CACHE ZONES
Download:
P500VPBMB3 Sprint 4.1.2 Firmware
Password on the archive is: www.mobiletechvideos.com
How To Flash:
BACKUP YOUR FILES AND DATA BEFORE FLASHING...ALWAYS. First extract this file using WinRAR or a program capable of extracting a RAR package as the package inside it is the TAR file you need. This was done to save time on the download. Once extracted, using ODIN, select PDA and choose this file. Now place your tablet in DOWNLOAD MODE by having it powered off, then power on by holding POWER and VOLUME DOWN until you see the on-screen text come up. Release the buttons and press VOLUME UP to enter DOWNLOAD MODE. Now click START on ODIN. Once completed (takes around 10 minutes), it is advised to enter RECOVERY MODE and perform a FACTORY DATA RESET for the best bug free experience since I don't know what ROM you are flashing from.
Did this help you out? Great, I'm glad it did! Click that THANKS button next to my name if you have the time. Please note, if you find yourself in a hard/soft brick situation of any type on any advice, give me a shout via PM or email through the contact page on our site. We also offer repairs on a number of other issues.
27 downloads and nothing? I'd love some feedback so others can be confident in the firmware.

Hi. I am pretty new here (although I have been a member for a while, I have not really been active). I do have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1 inch display model P500VPBMB3. Perhaps I can try out what you are talking about if it helps me with my problem below and then I will be more than happy to give you feedback.
PROBLEM
I never really rooted a device before but I am at a loss here since the current version of Android that I have on my device is 4.1.2 . It's working OK but I run out of space very often since I only have 16GB of main memory. I would love to upgrade to 4.2.x so that I have the option of storing apps on the external SD card. I am not clear exactly what you are giving us here on your thread. If you can explain it to me and especially if it does what I am outlining above I would want done, I would love to give it a shot and then give you some feedback.
Either way thank you for helping is Sprint tablet people whether or not what you have above will help me.
Thanks

You will actually want to look into custom recovery combined with a custom ROM to enable this type of option. What I have provided here is a stock firmware (stock operating system). This is actually already what you have installed on the device.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. You seem to be a helpful sort of person. I am sorry to be so dense but I have no idea what those things are. Is there a place where I can, sort of begin from scratch to learn all about these things or can you please fully explain what I need to do here?
I get that yo said that what you are offering is what I already have. What I don't understand is what exactly what to look for. I do know that if I install the wrong thing, I can brick my device. What I don't know if how to find what I am looking for. I already tried it in the search box-that's how I got to your thread.
This is honestly a very tough section as the P500 is a rare unit that has little to no development. You are in the right sub-forum but finding any mods for your unit may not be possible at this time unfortunately.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! You can root with Kingo root and make modifications with xposed. I just have been so busy with work.
I will flash this when I have time. Now I can be more risky with flashing because I can now go back to stock ROM.

Hello, I know its been almost a year, but I tried to flash this ROM and get stuck after the tab reboots with the message "POWER RESET or UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE", is there anything I can do to restore the tab (I did not do any backup).
Thanks a bunch
Do you have the Sprint model? If so, try re-downloading it and flashing again. Afterwards, perform a factory data reset.

The tab comes from China but in the options i've seen SPH-P500 so I supposed it was a model made for Sprint.

That is definitely unusual though the fact it came from China. This likely is NOT the right firmware for your model. The back of the unit should have the model number. See what it says...

Indeed the back says P5110 ... Chinese devices ... Thanks a lot ! :good:
P500
Wow!! I made a mistake!! I bought this tab to have some fun rooting and installing custom roms. I should have checked the forums first to see if there was any support. Thanks for what you've provided here. I'm going to at least try to root and install xposed.
I have a sprint gtab2 10.1 that's out of contract, so i'm willing to start working on things if needed.
if we no longer need to use the Sprint data can we flash a SPH-P5100 rom for wifi only ?
resurrecting an old thread. Need to find the original firmware for sph-p500. This appears to be it, but I can't find or get the password to the .rar file. I can't find the firmware anywhere else after a TON of google searches. any help appreciated in either getting the password to the .rar file, or a different place to download the firmware.

[Q] Recovery/Back up/Flashing ROMs CONFUSED

Hello! I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge.
First of all here is my phone info
Rooted RAZR maxx hd with unlocked bootloader (XT926)
My main objective is to flash custom ROMs and see if any are better and faster than stock.
My problem is I have no idea what I'm doing. I can't seem to find any threads that are simple enough for me to understand what I need to do and in what order I need to do those things.
Supposedly I need to back up my phone which seems to be the same thing as having a recovery???
If there is a thread that simplifies backing up and using a custom recovery please post a link.
I don't understand how to back up my phone, or if I use my computer or phone to do said back up.
I don't understand how to use the app ROM manager, my phone isn't listed on it when I try to download clockworkmod. So I downloaded a file cwm.img and I don't know what the heck to do with it?
I think I have adb on my computer?
I'm so confused and there's too much information and it makes no sense to me. Can someone please help me or post links to SIMPLE walk throughs of what I need to do and tell me what order I'm supposed to do them in?
I'm sorry if you think I haven't searched because I've been searching for a long time over a few days and all I've found is information that is too complex for me.
I appreciate any help! I'm new and I don't want to hurt my phone.

Mine is a Razr HD (XT925) But it's mainly the same except roms and some tools (and probably some other things I don't know...)
My main objective is to flash custom ROMs and see if any are better and faster than stock.
Which is the idea I had a week ago
My problem is I have no idea what I'm doing.
I was exactly in the same position since this is my first smartphone ever ^^
I can't seem to find any threads that are simple enough for me to understand what I need to do and in what order I need to do those things.
Well I had to search a while cause I first of all wanted to backup the most I could before doing anything.
Supposedly I need to back up my phone which seems to be the same thing as having a recovery???
This is a good thinking But there are limitations on what you can do without making the first thing which is rooting your phone "and then unlocking it".
If there is a thread that simplifies backing up and using a custom recovery please post a link.
I don't understand how to back up my phone, or if I use my computer or phone to do said back up.
The first thing I could do, was to backup the Apps/Contacts/etc... by using some apps like : MyBackup
The thing is : these applications are limited until you are rooted, because you wont be able to save apps data like your game scores or whatever
The second way to backup, is to make an entire backup of your system and data, which can only be made after unlocking the bootloader (by installing a custom recovery).
Be careful, unlocking your bootloader will ENTIRELY WIPE the data you have so make backups BEFORE.
I don't understand how to use the app ROM manager, my phone isn't listed on it when I try to download clockworkmod. So I downloaded a file cwm.img and I don't know what the heck to do with it?
Not sure about it because I never got that app before unlocking my bootloader.
I think I have adb on my computer?
To get adb on your computer, you need Android-SDK.
I'm so confused and there's too much information and it makes no sense to me. Can someone please help me or post links to SIMPLE walk throughs of what I need to do and tell me what order I'm supposed to do them in?

I can understand, personnaly im working in IT and I understand how this can be a pain when you have no knowledge at all on that subject :/
I appreciate any help! I'm new and I don't want to hurt my phone.
Once again, good thinking, but even thought, going where you are going is very risked.
And I can tell...because I nearly bricked my phone...as you can see here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2631547

Use Recovery Tools from play to flash your fav img.
TWRP check my Problems post in HD gen. Pocket proof, easy
Not pocket proof:
CWMR be careful of the double touch conformation!-you can use the keys til you are versed w/ the input flukes that inspired Philz recovery. Otherwise solid & simple.
I use Philz which may support everything in Rom Manager soon.
RM works w/ Photon Q recovery works on all the msm8960 phones, xt907, 925, 926, mb886. keys only.
All recoveries
Just because you can format it, it still may not be supported in the backup or even the xml restore (/persist)
edit
Get a SANDISK 64 GB CARD, FORMAT FROM RECOVERY to default format-fat32. Then when in doubt BACKUP.
All for now
bye
No offense intended, but if it's too difficult for you, than you probably shouldn't touch the phone until you understand everything. Before you start modding, you need to know how to recover it so we don't have another brick. Once you start to understand the minor things, it will be like a light switch and the more complex things will start to make sense.

I do believe a 925 can save themselves the bother of the factory path if they do not mind it being not reversible. Yet both are irreversibly noticeable.

Sorry about that I thought XT926 were close enough from XT925 (which is the only device I own) to have the same unlocking process.
My bad ^^
well if you're already unlocked and rooted, use this
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_xt925
follow the instructions, go to the development forum, download TWRP, CWM whichever floats your boat, and just use adb and fastboot.
id reccomend a backup, nandroid, titianium, etc.

This is an excellent point. When I first got into this a couple of years ago, I soft bricked my Bionic. I was able to recover it, but I could have avoided the problem if I had read a little more first. Now I read, read, read before trying something new. I found YouTube videos very helpful when I was a noob. Rootjunky is one resource, online and on YouTube. rootjunky.com

yes i supposedly backed up with cwm, but the last time i got in that option, it did not find that backup.
at least there is a firmware superthread, but my cwm is for 4.4 only, so id have to flash another cwm to go back to stock jb
i find a titanium backup to be better, just backup my sms/calls, wifi keys, and user apps...

No offense taken! I appreciate the constructive criticism. That is why I posted this question. I am reading all I can and I won't be attempting anything more until I understand the concepts. I just didn't know where to go for a more simple explanation of these concepts since apparently I'm not as intelligent as 90% of you guys on this forum!
I have already rooted and unlocked my phone so that's a good start haha. I will now follow the advice given in this thread and hopefully learn enough to understand these more complex concepts!
I appreciate everyone's information and responses!
Thanks ya'll

Infinity Revisited - Need Some Advice

Hey guys,
I am back to using the TF700T after about a year's absence from it. I've done a bunch of tweaks on it some time ago and can't really remember all the things that have been done. I know that the device is rooted and unlocked but couldn't tell you the ROM or anything else ... not that it matters.
I want to get this thing back up and running as fast as possible so I am looking for some suggestions on a lightweight ROM that has speed as its focus. I don't care if I lose everything on it and would like to go back to as factory of a feel as possible ... I'm even open to the OTA ROM if people believe it's the best.
Can someone provide some suggestions on where to start?

This is maybe what you are looking for.... It is light version of Cromi X and very fast in my opinion...:good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520828
Please let us know your opinion...Thanks...
Most popular, for a very good reason, is CROMi-X. Based on the stock rom, cleaned and optimized to the nines. It's how the stock rom should have been
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2425383
Lightweight?
Go for miniCROMi-X - stripped down to the essentials, very fast but you may miss some bells and whistles but definitely worth a try.

Want Kitkat on the TF700? CyanogenMod 11 will get you there. Still some bugs though.
Then there's OMNI ROM, Paranoid, CMB.... they all have a thread in the Development section. Check them out.
Make sure you update your bootloader and recovery to the required version. If you didn't update in a year, both are definitely outdated!
Thank you for the suggestions but could you point me in the right direction to update my bootloader and recovery? It's been a while and I don't want to hard brick my Transformer.
I have since updated my computer so I'm sure my drivers for the Transformer aren't up to date ...
Sorry to ask but could you walk me through the process as if I'm new to it again?
Very much appreciated.

What I am most afraid of is that I don't know what version of the Transformer it is ... US, World Wide ... the build number seems to have deleted all reference when I had flashed to ClearROM. Any way to figure this out with another method?

Well if you are in the US, most likely it is US... And it doesn't matter that much on a custom ROM anyway.
Read the OP in the CROMI-X thread and follow the instructions for scenario 2. Download the bootloader /TWRP package provided there, flash it, reboot, do a factory wipe in TWRP and you're good to flash the rom.

Problem is that I am in Canada and Canadians get either the WW or US version. From what I am reading, if I choose the wrong bootloader, I will brick my device. Any other way to determine the SKU version?

The bootloader is universal. Only the firmware is regional. Look in About Tablet > Build Number. Even your old CROMi version should have a US or WW in it. But AFAIK Canada is North America, which is US - sorry, I know it's a sore point with you Canadians

Possibly if you flash the WRONG bootloader, but you won't if you flash the bootloader/TWRP package from the OP of the CROMi-X thread!
It contains the 10.6.1.14.10 bootloader (which is the latest for this tablet) and TWRP 2.6.1 which has been rock solid on this device.
During installation of the rom (if you go for CROMi-X) you will have the choice to install the WW or US version. The difference is mostly in the WiFi modules in the kernel I think, different channels are used in Europe and the US. But really, even if you flash the "wrong" version - you can just reflash the other one right on top of it.
If you go for a CM rom you don't even have that "problem". There are no regional versions for CM - and thousands of users are still very happy with it....
Read the CROMi-X OP carefully. Read it again - and then again until you're sure you understand the instructions.
Maybe a refresher would help. I wrote a beginners guide to flashing a rom on this tablet (most of it you won't need since you already have a custom recovery installed, but maybe it would be helpful to you to understand the process).
http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...ginners-guide-flashing-custom-rom-tf700t.html
For you only these steps are needed:
Flash the bootloader/TWRP package mentioned above
Reboot
Boot into recovery and do a Factory Wipe in TWRP
Flash the rom
Enjoy

The bootloader also has US and WW versions, but they are identical except for the displayed version string (at least I compared the 10.6.1.14.4 bootloaders back when they were released).

First post ever here at xda. My suggestion would be to start with flatline, to bricksafe your device. Then it is all about taste. Personally I prefer Cromi-X by sbdags.
