Because of messed up data , I want to erase all the data in my phone and start with a fresh rom ( CM6 ) . I wonder if I just have to factory reset in OR , or I need to flash again my current rom . What about my current theme and gapps (Do I have to flash those again ) ? Can anyone tell me the correct steps if I want to remain on the same rom , same theme and gapps , but with all data erased ?
BTW , what is the advantages of ext4 against ext2 ( I use link2sd ) ?
Factory reset is almost enough. The only part that doesn't do is remove apps that are on the ext partition. I haven't used link2sd in a while, but it may have some mechanism to save data on ext now, too. That also won't be affected by factory reset.
ext3 and ext4 are journaled filesystems. Suppesedly they won't get corrupted as easily by kernel crashes, sudden reboots, battery pulls, etc.
What about gapps ? Don't need to flash as well ?
No need to re flash gapps (or your theme) after a factory data reset.
Many thanks , Mioze7Ae and 3rdstring
Hi Guys
Im having trouble flashing new Roms to my S7. When I enter TWRP recovery, it shows my device as 0MB and it doesnt picK up any files. I looked into this and read that Encryption should be disabled on the handset. I followed instructions to do this and noticed that there is no option for Encryption Protection. Its not there!
I disabled any passwords and Pin numbers to erase decryption and it still didnt work!
last resort was to try a factory reset and the device restarted to recovery and failed as TWRP recovery cant find any mounted devices due to the encryption crap.
Any help appreciated.

Hi mate
Seems like you did not format your data partition during TWRP installation.........
Try flashing your custom rom from the External SD card......your data partition has all your app , files , passwords, photos...there is still a chance that there it may be a incompatibility issue between your apps and the new rom....that is why they recommend a factory reset when flashing a new custom rom

Hi
TWRP can not handle Samsung encryption . if you wish to use TWRP and have access to the Data partition ( internal SD card) you need to format it so the encryption is disabled ( you lose all your apps , data and user configuration AKA factory reset) , you can have TWRP and data encryption but mods and roms have to be flashed from external memories also you will not have available MTP in recovery or factory reset from it.
There is no way to disable data encryption without format data.....
Ok, I got a friends SD card and placed the Rom on there. I can now see the Rom but the trouble is, TWRP wont let me wipe Dalvik / data / system / cache as it wont mount the storage....
can I still apply the ROM?
Unable to restart your device. The integrity verification has failed. You need to reset your device to factory default settings. This will erase all of your data.

That is why I point it out " factory reset is recommended when flashing custom rom" if you wish to flash a custom rom you will have to format your data partition and flash the data verify file........

I have tried to format/wipe data. TWRP keeps saying it failed as it cant mount the storage.
I tried flashing the stock rom via odin and it also failed as it goes to recovery to wipe data and it fails again as it cant mount storage.

How did you flash the stock rom...which files did you use?
Wipe data is not enough you have to Wipe / FORMAT DATA and type yes....
1 To get rid of encryption, go to "wipe", format data (TWRP) (keyboard will pop up) then type "yes" and format it, then reboot to recovery
2. After flashing this, hit wipe, full wipe (this will clean all internal memory and your data will be lost
3 you can test if encryption is still enabled, if TWRP shows error about not mounting data your phone is still encrypted

What version of TWRP are you guys using and what version Super SU?

Ever since I updated to Android 10, I haven't been able to mount the data partition in TWRP. I'm using the newest TWRP version. Does anyone else have this issue? And have you been able to fix it?
I've already tried the following:
- Removing any for for password
- Using password
- Using PIN code
- Wiping the phone through TWRP
- Formating the Data partition (After formating I can mount the data partition, but after booting the system, it can't be mounted again...)
- Changing to ext2 and back to ext4 (Had same result as formatting)
- Normal Factory Reset
I have absolutely no idea what is wrong. Any help is appreciated
Are you using twrp 3.3.1-70, 71 or 72? These are the modified version for the one plus 7 pro. other version will have problems.
Can anyone help i can't understand ?
i flashed twrp with universal dm verity
then i wipe dalvik/art cache / system /data /vendor
then i format using format data by typing yes
then i copy custom rom either in internal storage or usb otg
then i flash the rom
then clean dalvik cache
then i format typing yes
then reboot to system
it erases my custom rom and reboot to recovery in case of miui 12.5 android 11
but incase of lineage os 18 it does not and boots in os perfectly
can anyone tell why?
also why it is not installing in system partition rather on the internal storage
i am using redmi note 4
rom: MIUI_GLOBAL_HMNOTE4_12.5.9.0-11
Note:why i need factory reset is to encrypt to use banking and fintech apps
factory reset enables encryption after installing
but if i not do the factory reset the does not encrypt in anyway but rom works
Been trying to flash a Samsung Tab3 (GT-P5210) with Lineage os 18.1. Was able to place the unit in system recovery mode and wiped out data/factory reset it was successful (formatting data, formatting cache and data wipo complete). the wipe out cache partition and was successful (formatting cache and cache wipe complete). Then applied update from external storage.
Use lineage 18.1-20211108-nightly-gts4lvwifi-signed.zip and process start: finding update package, opening update package, verifying update package. Then got 3 errors: E:failed to verify whole-file signature twice and E;signature verification failed.
Appling Multi=CSC
Applied the CSC-code: XAR
Always install version 4.4.2 instead any other newer. 4.4.2 works fine but need a higher to run programs doesn't work on 4.4.2 anymore.
I'm trying to help a 3rd world country school student, he can't afford a new device.
What I'm doing wrong. Any Help will appreciate.
Try the process again without wiping the system partition just wipe data and cache , then flash just the rom , with no GAPPS and see if it boots .
If it does , then reboot to recovery and flash the gapps with no wipe
