I have the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, rooted with 4.0.4, and have not had any problems with it for the most part.
I recently downloaded Sketchbook Express to see how well the tablet could handle drawing. It handles it very well with one exception: the closer you get to drawing at a 45* angle, the more wavy the lines get. If I quickly swipe in that direction, it straightens out, but the slower I go, the more pronounced the waves or zig zags get. This happens using any of my fingers, the $20 Rocketfish stylus, and the $30 Wacom Bamboo stylus. All attempted on a freshly cleaned screen. I've also tried different apps with the same result. This guy had the same issue, as have others from what research I could pull up, but outside of unhelpful answers of "it's your stylus" (it's not), they all seem to have given up on getting help.
I've tried these apps on my friend's Evo 4G 3D, running Android 4.0.3, and had the same issue. I then tried on my rooted Xperia Play running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, and did not have this issue. I'm not entirely convinced it's an OS version that's making the difference, but I'm not able to find much information about the screens these devices use outside of "capacitive touch". I did learn that these screens use the corners to determine the location of input being received, so maybe moving directly in the direction of a corner is causing it to mess up?
Long story short, my questions are thus: is there any way to fix, calibrate, or compensate for this issue? Is it the screen, a hardware issue, or something else? Is there anything I can do?

The problem is the digitizer. It's cheap. I think all of the g tabs have this issue. Mine is terrible drawing diagonal lines and even scrolling in landscape mode is choppy. Only way around it from what I can tell is to apply more finger surface area. That seems to fix it. But since you're using a stylus that's not possible. If you find a solution to calibrate the digitizer, please let me know!
I have the same exact problem and the same exact request. There must be some option to increase sensitivity to at least minimize this effect. It's the only flaw I can find on this otherwise wonderful device.
And honestly, for the prize it cost, I would expect this not to exist. But... I have it now and would like to be able to use it in it's full extent and power.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who notice that, but it's crazy how my finger seems preciser than my pen and even more, that in my Galaxy S the pen works perfectly. I was so happy to use some drawing apps on the tab but when I tried...

just to report the same issue. i have same problem with my samsung galaxy tab 2 7" like you all here. i get this problem since the first time i bought it (about a month ago). drawing the lines and reading in landscape mode is choppy :crying: same as MrHyde03 said. i have been tested my cousin's tablet to draw diagonal line for comparison, he has galaxy tab p1000. and the line result i get, though his tab has wavy line too, but mine has more wavy line than his tablet. i didn't noticed his tablet has so wavy line, just a little. i did it with my finger.
i hope this issue can be fixed later.

Hi guys, I have the same problem. Horrible response when i draw with a (cheap) stylus and perfect when i do it with my fingers. Has anyone tried adonit jot pro or Dagi ??? Maybe they increase the contact area and it solves the problem. If so, please tell us!!!

I know this is an old post, but I can't just abandon my own thread! I've done quite a bit of research on this since making this post, and sadly, it's the way the screen is. Strange that my Xperia Play and Galaxy S3 phones can do this, but the Tab 2 was given such a cheap screen. I ended up selling it and putting the money towards a Note 10.1 with S-pen, which works as I would expect it to.

Hey is anyone elses GTab's touch sensitivity kind of off?
I noticed, compared to the iPad and Galaxy Tab, some times it takes me 2-4x of tryinng to press something to get it going.
Its almost like the screen cant pick it up sometimes. And sometimes when scrolling, it selects things, when im just Trying to scroll..
Also the top left HOME button on screen is always iffy, most times ill need 2-4 more times 2 press it to get it going.
I am using TNT 2.2.
Anyone else noticed this? i feel like its hardware.
Definetely not as responsive as my EVO. Maybe its the cheap screen. I wish it could be fixed via software, but fat chance. I guess not all capacitive screens are created equal.

You nailed it. IMO Samsung has been making the best color screens for years.
Have had absolutely no problems with touchpad responsiveness from my gTab... Just as sensitive and responsive as my Dinc.
Really does seem like this hardware is hit or miss... Some tabs have no issues some have many.
You guys are just plain spoiled. I've gone through Palm IIIx to now the gTablet, and it just simply has the most responsive touch screen that I've ever used, but I've had recent experience with the dreadful Augen GT and the slightly less dreadful White Pandigital Novel, both of which had worse touch screens than other devices that I've used.
One thing that I do, do for the gTab though is to clean the screen quite a bit. At a minimum I do so before every use as I find the fingerprint/body oils buildup to be annoying in fairly short order and it might have some impact on touch responsiveness. It's the worst fingerprint magnet that I've ever seen actually...
No issues here with single touch sensitivity, pretty good on that. Just as good as my Nexus One. Multitouch and pinch-to-zoom still a bit flaky. I am hopeful that will be resolved by software and/or driver improvements, as it was on the Nexus One.
The only issues I have are when the screen is too dirty or too clean. When I really scrub and clean the glass off entirely, at first it's a bit too "sticky" almost when my finger contacts it - maybe that's because it's winter here in the Northeast and my skin is dry. Once I've used it a bit and it gets some finger grease on it, it works perfectly. But if it gets grit or solid dirt on it, that can definitely interfere with the touch screen too, as with any capacitive screen.
I suspect the optimal thing would be a really good screen protector that's easy to clean and has that smooth finger contact feeling out of the box, like the iPad's glass does, for example, which I think has something to do with the oleophobic coating.
Typing this on my gtablet. The issue for me is the keyboard. There are parts of the screen that are unresoonsive making some letters not get tapped. The A key and l keys in particular. As a result I can't type smoothly or naturally because I will make several errors along the way. This does not happen onky iphone or my wires ipad.

Well if your using the stock tnt keyboard, it sucks. We can learn from the ipad, with the size of the screen it has huge keys that cover a lot more of the screen then our stock tnt keyboard. I use smart keyboard pro with the key heights set to maximum and it works so much better, like 100x better. Even has voice to text.
Can people check their keyboard? I find that if I type most of the keys they type fine. However, the letter a key seems to only work when pressed offcenter which prevents. From typing properly as I must deliberately slow down and make sure it is correctly typed otherwise I get many errors. Could this be a defect in my screen?
Or is this a ui problem with tnt?

If this all g tablets then I think it's going back.

Agreed bout the dead spots. The stock tap n tap western keyboard seems tominimize them due to the angles but if I try another keyboard I miss the a and the return button all the time

Downloaded the app as well because I, too, am having the same screen non-responsiveness issue. Lo and behold the area where the "L" key is is a pretty dead spot. It would register about 40% of the quick taps I did in that area. Is this is a software issue? If so, I can live with it and hope our wonderful devs release a software build that resolves this otherwise, this thing may be going back because it's driving me up the wall!
I do see the occasional missed tap here and there, but no consistent dead areas that I've noticed (the A and L buttons on keyboard seem fine to me).
Multitouch sensitivity is wayyyyy mis-calibrated though - you have to use very heavy finger presses to get multitouch to register. This is some sort of driver or calibration issue that should be easily solved.
I found a binary called TSCalibration in the /system/bin directory on my VEGAn ROM G Tablet. Tried running it from terminal, but it seems to be looking for a calibration.ini file on the SDCard. I'd be willing to bet we could figure out how to fix some of the touchscreen issues with some work, because I suspect they are principally software related.

My new one requires very little effort if any at all to get the screen to respond...

There is a big difference between these dead spots and the occasional miss. I have no problem with the occasional miss. I just have to adjust to how my finger touches the tablet to get more consistent hits.
There are areas of my tablet that consistently do not behave like the other areas. Does that sound normal to you? I can't have a tablet where anything in the 2 corners is extremely inconsistent. If I have the tablet oriented a certain way the soft-buttons get put into one of the bad corners and that is really frustrating.
I don't think it is how I am holding it because the problem follows the physical corners and it is not relative to my hand. So that rules that out. And I washed my hands and gave the tablet a good cleaning so dirt/grease/grime is not an issue either. It could have been too clean but why only two corners?
I have many weeks to go on my 30 days so I will keep screwing with it to see if I can come up with anything that is a workaround or explains why it is happening. It is insanely fast and it's modding future looks extremely bright with such talented people. If I get fed up enough, I'll exchange it and hopefully get one with a even touch response for the whole screen or simply return it and wait a couple more months for Honeycomb tablets.

Whoa. That video was pretty bad. While mine is not like that (thank God), I just tried hitting the app drawer key and it only registered after the 13th tap?!?! seriously wtf. While it isn't a "dead zone" per se, that's still pretty bad. There has to be a software fix to recify this issue with the right side of the screen. (my "L" and "delete" button are pretty bad as well).
THAT is a defective product...
I'll do another video to compare with my new one...WITH funky assed salty sweat all over the screen. Works flawlessly...
Is your model that is working well running stock firmware and keyboard?
mine is tent lite and the stock keyboard is ok. It if I try to use the alternative keyboards then I get consistent misses on key presses especially on the letter a.
I'm always tapping *constantly*, like 10-20 times on certain spots around the corners and edges of the screen, I'm about to return mine because of this.. Believe I'm still in the 2 weeks with office depot, will have to go snag the $350 one over at sears and hopefully it will come with a screen protector this time (this one I have didn't come with one, wonder if that has to do with the dead spots)..
I use a ZooGue stylus with my Galaxy Tab 8.9 (Stock, non-rooted) and it works GREAT for drawing.
I recently purchased a Tab 2 7.0 (P3113) for my wife (she likes the smaller form factor) but when attempting to draw using multiple drawing apps it is extremely choppy. When using my finger it seems to be better, but she really wants to use a stylus. I've looked thru the settings and can't find anything that would make a difference. I've also looked thru the forums here at xda and can't find anyone that has posted anything similar.
Has anyone else experienced the same and if so is there a way to fix this problem?

I think I've run into what you are talking about. I can't draw straight lines with a stylus. when I try to draw a line, the screen registers it as a zig zag. I'm not sure if this is what you mean by "choppy." I can draw lines fine with my finger.
I noticed that it's near impossible to draw in SketchUp - it takes 1/3 to 1/2 second for the lines to catch up to my finger.
I assumed it was just the compromise you make with buying a low-end tablet. I'd love to hear that it isn't!

Yes, that's part, as well as attempting to draw small circles/curves either skips or shows as a straight(ish) line. Hopefully a solution can be found soon otherwise this one is going back.

I noticed this issue from day one since the first thing I did was play Draw Something. No matter the app, swiping your finger in a slow and steady manner will help notice the stutters/lag.
I also attempted to use a stylus because I thought there was some sort of weird calibration issue, but to my surprise, it got even worse. The strange zig-zag phenomenon appeared, making it impossible to draw anything. Even though it's only noticeable when you drag/swipe/draw something, it's annoying as heck. Hell, I even recently found a dead pixel in the middle of the screen, adding up to the annoyance factor.
Still got like 1-2 weeks available to return it to Best Buy, and I'm not sure what to do...
Hey, I bought my note 10.1 about a week ago because I was really excited about the Wacom screen for digital art. I've been loving this thing since I got it, and all the great drawing apps, but I tried practicing hatching to get better at drawing. What I noticed is that when I draw straight lines slowly together I do fine till I reach the middle of the screen. The tablet causes my lines to jump erratically . I tried adding a picture to show what I mean.
It bothered me enough that I took it back and exchanged for a new one. It's doing the same thing.
Is there anything I can do to fix this, or is this just a flaw I have to live with.. . I also tried testing it out in layer paint and s note as well.
Any waviness is me, not the Note...
Just tested mine n I get no bumps either. I can do hatching and straight lines without issue.
Not sure what to suggest, other than maybe changing the sensitivity of the spen.

There is an h/w issue with the digitizer... Read somewhere (here, but can't find reference, so don't quote me....) But apparently the digitizer is NOT behind the display, rather its baked into the GLASS....
This may explain the input instability. problem is, its not reproducible in the same spot every time, so I'm not sure exactly what is going on

my screen on my tab 2 7 works almost perfect, except when I draw diagonaly, it wiggles tons. the screen is clean amd it has done this sonce i first opened it. It does this regardless of if I use a stylus or my fingers, and it does the same on my sisters tab of the same kind. Is it fixable? or is ia just a hardware problem? Im an artist so this is getting really annoying, since it wont draw curves or circles because of this D:
Mine's done it since day 1 also, and as far as I know, it's a common "issue" with the digitizer. Basically, the digitizer cheap. Only way I've found around it is to apply more surface area with your finger.

I've found on my Note 10.1 that the accuracy of the S-Pen gets worse near the edges of the display. At the very edges it's off by about 1 mm or slightly more. I can't say it's really caused any problems but I'm wondering if this is normal and if there's any method to better calibrate it?
I've been having the same issue, or at least I noticed it recently...
Does anyone know anything about this problem?

I tried changing the tip with both types of tips supplied with the tablet and as expected it had no effect. Note, also, how utterly useless Samsung email support is. The only way to reply is through a link which sends you to a contact form to submit a new email from scratch. There's no incident number or any way to establish continuity.
In any case, I happened to be at a Microsoft store yesterday and played a bit with Samsung's ACTIV (sp?) pro Windows 8 tablet which has the same s-pen as the Note 10.1. What I noticed immediately is it behaves exactly like my tablet: the digitizer loses accuracy both when tilting the pen and especially when the pen is near the edges of the display. The amount of inaccuracy is just about the same too, about 1 mm near the edge.
So I suspect this may be a limitation of the technology or at least the technology as it's being used by Samsung (I'm surprised Wacom's stuff is not more accurate). I'd be particularly interested if anyone is NOT seeing this.
It also seems silly that the display cannot be recalibrated or the driver does not support remapping. This seems like something that should be pretty easy to implement.
On the positive side, I can't say that I've experienced any real accuracy problems when in actual use. Probably I don't tend to write so close to the edge where it might be an issue. It's more an annoyance that the cursor doesn't quite match the tip. It's actually less annoying than having my hand trigger s-note's zoom or the notification drawer every time I try to write something.
Too bad, samsung support is horrible. For me this problem is pretty annoying since I tend to write until the VERY edge (just like I do in real paper), so I guess I'll have to change my habits lol.
P.S: It's good to know that is not my faulty tablet, but something "normal" in wacom devices...

Yes, it is annoying. I wonder if there's any dev we can convince to write a remapping layer to fix this issue.

Hi to all. I am having a note 2, it has the same s pen as all the note series... i had that problem but it fixed when i did update! Try to go on developers options and check 'show pointer location' to check if the problem is the spen or the software.
I also notices that when used near the camera there is a great loss of accuracy .... and good to know that's not hte fault of my Note:good:

Mine just works fine, even on the ledges! Sometimes, but sometimes when the accelerometer is uncalibrated the S-Pen just stop responding well. I calibrate the accelerometer using this game https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fgol.HungrySharkEvolution Just go on Options/Change to tilt control(If necessary)/Calibrate

Thanks for trying to help .... the slight offset near the edges is no problem for me but i had a relatively bigger offset near the top (near the cameras) but that appeared to be due to the magnetic part in the book cover i had what an idiot .. i thought the camera had magnetic parts that do this and forgot the magnet of my book cover
So now what i really have is the offset near the edges
For me it's not an overall offset issue but just near the edges where it makes taking notes, sketching particularly difficult. It's very frustrating that these tablets aren't better calibrated out of box and provide no option for calibration. I'd be very surprised if this couldn't be fixed through software but would probably require support through the driver.
The other issue I have is that the drawing point only visually aligns with the tip of the pen when the pen is 90 degree from the tablet and you're looking straight down at it. Provided you hold the pen at a relatively steep angle and you angle the tablet so you're looking mostly down at it (say on your knee or a tilted stand) it's not bad. But once you deviate from that, say by putting the tablet flat on a table in front of you so you're looking at down at around 30 degrees, the deviation from where the tip appear to be and where the drawing point is becomes significant. I find this very frustrating. While I still prefer the s-pen to a passive capacitive pen, the fact I can't draw where I think I'm drawing makes it hard to work with. I've been using the tablet as my primary note taking device but I'm getting frustrated enough that I may go back to pen and paper and scanning.
It's probably not possible to fix this issue without hardware changes. Although multiple calibration profiles might reduce the effect.
I guess I'll have to wait for better hardware before I can finally live a paperless life...

For me it's not an overall offset issue but just near the edges where it makes taking notes, sketching particularly difficult. It's very frustrating that these tablets aren't better calibrated out of box and provide no option for calibration. I'd be very surprised if this couldn't be fixed through software but would probably require support through the driver.
The other issue I have is that the drawing point only visually aligns with the tip of the pen when the pen is 90 degree from the tablet and you're looking straight down at it. Provided you hold the pen at a relatively steep angle and you angle the tablet so you're looking mostly down at it (say on your knee or a tilted stand) it's not bad. But once you deviate from that, say by putting the tablet flat on a table in front of you so you're looking at down at around 30 degrees, the deviation from where the tip appear to be and where the drawing point is becomes significant. I find this very frustrating. While I still prefer the s-pen to a passive capacitive pen, the fact I can't draw where I think I'm drawing makes it hard to work with. I've been using the tablet as my primary note taking device but I'm getting frustrated enough that I may go back to pen and paper and scanning.
It's probably not possible to fix this issue without hardware changes. Although multiple calibration profiles might reduce the effect.
I guess I'll have to wait for better hardware before I can finally live a paperless life...

May be try this app with this kernel the post says that it can successfully reset the Spen callibration

That was it for me. The case was causing that. When I read your post I realized that my case has a keyboard and you can remove it. It stays in place with a magnet. So I removed it and it works as expected. so now I know to get it on the edges it's that. Thanks:good:
