[Q] How to unlock a TMobile HTC S - HTC One S

Hey guys, not new to the forums, but just coming back. I have been using an Iphone for the last year or so, and after I upgraded and was unable to jailbreak it (untethered at least), I couldn't take it anymore. I went on to swappa and found what I felt like was a great deal on a brand new HTC One S for $310. I have a question now though. I have been trying out Straight Talk for about a month, and I really have no complaints since much of my data use is over wifi. However, how do I unlock the HTC One S for TMobile so that I can use it with my ATT Straight Talk sim? I'm not even sure I will have to, but it should be here tomorrow and I would like to be prepared. I thought I read you could do this by rooting the phone, but like I said, I haven't been using Android for over a year now so I just wanted to ask the experts. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey there... It's pretty easy. I'm not a noob anymore but im not very advanced either. With that said see the two links I'm attaching.
First root your phone with the one touch tool. It's pretty easy. If you have a mac, run vmware or parallels to do it on windows-that's what I did.
Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24973565
Then follow the instructions in this post to unlock your phone so you can use your non tmo sim card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27010217
Hope it works for you. I'd appreciate it if you would hit the thanks if I helped you out.

Hey guys,
I just received a TMobile HTC S One today to replace my Iphone. I want to use it with straight talk, but I need to root the phone to unlock it first. I've been following the instructions I was pointed to here on the site, and when I got to the following step, I got stuck:
Type this into your command prompt window fastboot oem get_identifier_token
All my CMD prompt box is saying is < waiting for device >
I'm getting no lines of info like the tutorial says I should. I'm kinda nervous because I have my phone powered on and plug into the computer on that white fastboot use screen with teh android guys on skateboards at the bottom. Can anyone help? I really hope I didn't mess up a phone I just spent over $300 on. I'll be here waiting if anyone can give me a hand. Much appreciated.

I think so...weren't they in one of the real files I was told to install at the beginning of that thread?

I don't think you have done any damage to you phone. If adb cannot see it or can't send any data. Which guide are you following?

I was following this guide, and then I tried using the software too and had the same problem, at the same step. I did a factory restore from my bootloader screen to get out of that first jam.

Make sure USB debbuging is ON and fastboot is OFF (in settings on your phone). Also, make sure you are using a decent data USB cord (some are only for power, and won't transfer data..that was my problem when I got the same "waiting" screen). Also, try using different USB ports on your computer. Don't know why exactly, but sometimes that helps.

The debugging was the problem with the root. Thanks a bunch for that help. Now however I can't seem to unlock my phone from TMobile. I tried everything in the previously mentioned thread, but I keep getting no strings errors. Anyone have any advice?

Nothing worse than having a brand new phone that you can't even use the second day you have it. Man this sucks.

Don't be a douche! Like this?
I used a new two gig Sandisk card and formatted it in my phone, then used the Gold Card Maker, and then used the Ace hack kit picking up on number two in the menu. This downgraded the rom and then you just forward thru setup and enable debugging again and run number three in the menu. This gives you root and s-off. Then you repeat enable debugging and go to the options menu and flash the stock radio. Once it reboots, you are ready to place your renamed rom on the root of the sd card and restart in bootloader and flash away. Don't forget to disconnect the usb cable after moving the rom to the sd card. After reboot you are home free. If you flash a custom rom, you may need to flash a new radio. The key is having a good gold card, turning off antivirus, and remembering to put the phone on charge only and enabling debugging before each step.

Reading stuff like this makes me ever more genuinely glad I don't care to root my Inspire. In my case I know that if it can mess up it will mess up. But the whole process seems so convoluted and messy. Using a "Goldcard" seems like a burden to me...like you have to carry around addition weight with you wherever you go just to have a rooted phone. It all seems so super-duper messy. That's the biggest turn-off for me...like I would be trying to make something work unnaturally...like this is something that isn't designed for the device...stuff like that. By the way, I know someone will misunderstand what I meant by "weight" so I will preempt them by saying I know there is no "weight"...lol
Im just trying to use the wifi hotspot without getting charged on my already unlimited data plan, do i even need to root to do that? besides i just wanna have it rooted but it keeps failing. ive done it like 4 times.

From what I've read in the past, AT&T detects tethering on rooted phones and will charge the specific account for the cost of the feature.

BTW the goldcard is not needed once you're done rooting. I haven't had a goldcard in my phone for months - it's the oiriginal 8GB that I keep it in my desk drawer should I ever need it again. Using a regular 32GB card now.
Rooting's not that hard but there is a small hurdle at first, but the rewards make it worthwhile. Some people prefer stock, some people like to tweak until the cows come home.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong for it to say model ID incorrect?

You can set up an apn that allows hotspot without a tethering plan.
Sent from the computer I carry in my pocket.
Tethering is usually free on rooted phones.
I'm pretty sure that AT&T doesn't do deep packet inspection on their traffic yet, so you should be able to easily get away with tethering as long as you don't have significantly higher data usage than usual.

[Q] Phone Bricked...I Think...

Ok so heres the short of it. I was attempting to root my phone with the Hasoon V1.1 Tool kit and needless to say, everything went wrong. Here's what happened. I did everything to unlock the bootloader. Got my token ID and all that stuff. Next, I loaded the twrp recovery. Cleared everything out of the phone, and went to load a rom. It kept telling me "Failed" when I tried applying the rom. It ended up getting into a boot loop and wouldn't do much. I got it to go back to the recovery when this started and still it wouldn't load any of the ATT Htc One x Roms. I made sure those were the ones I had. Now, at random throughout the process at some point last night, it wouldn't do anything. It has a blank screen. When I plug it in, the status light shows nothing. It was on the charger last night all night, and has not changed. No status light, no screen, nothing! I know you guys are going to ask for more information, but low and behold, like most people you smart guys deal with, I'm a noob. I rooted my google G1, and my HTC inspire without too much trouble, but this is just completely beyond me. As I was doing research I read about problems people were having with the blank screen of death. I'm just worried because I don't have insurance and I'm pretty much screwed without a phone. Does anyone have any input as to what I can do? I'm just beyond aggrivated not having a phone, and I don't have much money to be getting a new one. PLEASE HELP ME
-Mike

This, as well as... Which phone do you have, the X or XL. The XL is specific in which rooting method you can use.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
-Power and volume down do absolutely nothing
-Rom was Endeavoru Cyanogen Mod
-Kernel was Franco Kernel r21
-Plugged into computer, does nothing. No status light, nothing.
I am thinking it wasn't the software that did it. It was plugged into the usb port of my laptop the whole time, but may have died. I read online somewhere if you completely discharge the phone, you need a special charger to charge it. If I loaded the wrong kernel it could have gotten below it's "dead" percentage. Correct me if I'm wrong, but with Lithium Ion batteries, completely discharging them is not good for the battery. If it had nothing to tell it to stop, and the usb port on my laptop didn't keep up with the amount I was messing with it, it could just be completely dead. I don't know. I'm an idiot and I apologize about all the gapps I'm giving you guys with information. I'm doing the best I can, but bottom line is after it didn't work at first, I tried a few different recoveries with Hasoons tool kit, and a couple different roms but the roms never loaded. Always failed.
The phone I have I believe to be the One X, but I don't know the difference. When I booted my phone, it did the HTC Quietly Brilliant screen, then the ATT Rethink possible screen. What is the difference between the one X and one XL? I thought the XL was a larger version of the phone unfortunately, and now I'm seeing differently. It's the ATT phone, 16 gb internal storage, mini sim on the top, Dual Core processor not quad core.
With your battery being so low and possibly even dead when you tried to do anything with it, could have a problem. The other problem, if my memory is correct in what I was reading the Endeavoru cyanogen ROM is for the X only, international version. If yours is AT&T like you say, if the flash was performed correctly.... I hate to say this but you might have a nice $500 paperweight, for now. I would PM Abdolutelygrim and see what he thinks, unless he isn't already here.. his current project is unbricking Evita.

I went through almost the same thing last night, with the exception of my battery dying. In the event that you are able to get the phone to charge, this guide helped me get my phone working again.
Good luck!
The phone was fully charged when I began, and I periodically connected and disconnected it when I was having my initial problems. I deleted my cache dalvic cache, etc everything after I saved all my important pictures and videos and files etc. so I just deleted everything to start over fresh. I don't know what the hell I did. I just figured this wouldnt be too hard since I did it with 2 of my own phones in the past, and a few friends phones also. I think my problem may have been with being ignorant and not knowing there were multiple versions of this phone that all look identical but aren't. Ohhhhhhhh boy. This is bad lol.

That is indeed your problem. The One X and One XL use a different partition layout, and international roms will attempt to overwrite the One XL boot partition. Hboot is wp in 2.20 but not in earlier versions. Even so, you can end up with corrupted firmware even if hboot is untouched. Numerous people have done it. Some devs are working on a way to fix this. Here's the thread, you'll need to get yourself in the queue or just see if you can get a replacement.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966850
Replacement isn't an option. I didn't get a chance to get insurance on it because I cracked the digitizer within the first 2 weeks of having the phone, and I opened it last night to see if something from when I cracked the digitizer came loose causing the phone to not boot. Thanks for the feedback so far guys. I'm not expecting miracles. I put myself into this mess, I'm just really hoping someone may be able to fix it soon. Not having a phone is really going to put a damper on my side work. Can't get phone calls from people on craigslist if I don't have a phone SH!T
Do you know what firmware your phone was on before you did this........it will be the determining factor if it's fixable atm
Sent from my HTC One XL using Tapatalk 2
I'm wondering if when I was trying to use CWM it screwed me up too. I read in a few peoples signatures that CWM also isn't compatable with the One XL. I feel like the biggest jackass. I'm the computer/cell phone/electronics guy in my area, and now I feel as if I should go into early retirement. I will stay open minded and hopeful that absolutelygrim and others come up with a solution, but bottom line, for all you guys that have made this process damn near idiot proof for people like me, I want to say thanks, and also apologize for all of us noobs that make something as simple as knowing what you are doing before you do it and following directions harder for the developers. It's awesome you guys do what you do in your spare time, only for people like myself to make it more of a hastle. Once again, thanks for trying to fix this guys. My bad.
18th... I was on 2.20. I read that there is a work around for 1.80(I think that's the firmware), but either way, yes I was on 2.20. I have been looking once a week for a new exploit to be able to root the one x, since there wasnt any options until about a week ago if you had 2.20. I bet that's why there are so many people screwing this up. They, like myself, are probably so eager to root it they don't take their time. I remember the first time I rooted my HTC inspire I took about 3-4 hours because I quadrouple checked what I was doing. And damn it am I kicking myself in the ass that I didn't do that this time around.
The problem was the endeavor Rom....but depending on what firmware you were on, 1.85 or 2.20 it can be fixed. If you were on 1.85 or below, it's fixable right now. If 2.20 then not atm.

The problem with CWM is that the version for the One XL is an unsupported port. So it's buggy, but the worst I've heard of it doing is corrupting people's sd card or occasionally borking installs, both of which are easily fixable.
The only time I've heard of CWM bricking One XL phones is when people use ROM Manager (which isn't supported for this phone, though GP will let you install it anyway) to install the endeavour version, which causes the same problem as flashing an endeavour rom.
Dang.. I thought it was just icecoldjelly that been banging up peoples OneX. I guess the new hboots aren't as noob-proof as we thought

Att&t to simple mobile?

A friend is coming by, she bought a used one X on At&t, bought a sim for simple mobile. Worked great but she decided to reset her phone due to previous owners content. She says the phone is not working correctly, wants me to root it for her. Her resetting phone should not have effected the phone in anyway, or am I missing something?

you can try running the ruu. just bear in mind 3.18 is not rootable.
Im not sure what's not working, sorry for being so vague. She wasn't very explicit. She just said it wasn't the same after doing a master reset. I thought maybe APN settings, but from what I've read it doesn't seem that you need to modify them.
I'd rather not root her phone, but I have rooted HTC before, sensation to be exact. My luck, ill brick the damn thing. I'm not as familiar with HTC as I am with Samsung, but I could figure it out.

It is'nt hard, as long as you do not have the JB update (3.18 like exad said)
If you can unlock the bootloader, and install another room, then go for it. If not, just take exad's advice, and install the RUU. Kind of like restoring an iDevice in iTunes
She has android 4.0.3. I will check boot loader, she is stuck on edge service though.

[Q] Noob bricked Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3

I hard bricked my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3.
I got the thing rooted just fine and I went to install a new ROM. I downloaded EZ unlock to unlock the bootloader and it all went fine. Then I went to restart it and nothing. It won't turn on at all. It doesn't enter recovery mode or download mode. It doesn't light up when it's plugged into the wall charger or laptop. My computer does make the sound when I connect the phone, but nothing shows up. When I open Odin I can get it to recognize the phone if I press the buttons to go into download mode but then it looses the connection as soon as it says added.
I followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166 but it didn't work.
I can't believe I did this. I feel like a total fool. You know that sick feeling that sinks into your gut? Yeah, I have it. I need this thing fixed like now but I don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I really got myself stuck in the creek.
I was looking up the jtag stuff last night but I'm still confused about it. Is it a program I can download or a usb stick that I have to buy? Can I get it from a store or do I have to purchase one off Ebay?

It's complex, it rewrites your bootloader to your mother board using a riff box. It isn't something easy that you could buy and operate yourself.
You'd send it out to someone. They'd break apart your phone and rewrite the boot image, put it back together, then send it back. Costs anywhere between $20-60.

You'd send it out to someone. They'd break apart your phone and rewrite the boot image, put it back together, then send it back. Costs anywhere between $20-60.

I just want to thank you again for your replies and your patience with my... noobishness.
I swear, I'm never messing around with my phone again. I had my old phone for 4 years and never fooled around with it. I had this one for 2 weeks and destroyed it.
Is there a company you could recommend that I could send it to? I'm in the U.S., Midwest region.

No problem, glad I could point you in the right direction.
It's not an issue about you messing with your phone. You just have to read more and understand what you're doing before attempting anything. All the information about 4.3 having a locked bootloader and not using ez unlock was readily available. Just next time you decide to root your phone, just read up as much as you can about it before attempting the process.
I really have no recommendations for jtag because I've never had to use it, but I know some eBay sellers can get pretty cheap.

OMG I got it working. I just had to buy a different card.
Yeah, you're completely right. I'm certainly going to read everything before I attempt something like this again.
Thank you again!

S3 straight talk verison rooting/general questions.

okay, I just bought this phone 2 days ago. really different from a windows phone. im getting use to it... but, ive been doing research on here on how to root it. after an hour I found one. much help is really appreciated! (im gonna sound really noobish when I say this)
how can you tell if your usb debugging is on, on your phone?
I literally went through every options on settings, looking through the booklet and nothing.
if its possible id like to root it without hooking it up to a computer?
I use to have older droids, and I could download apps and root it on the phone those were the days :good::good:
ROMS
I tried to rom a ascend y straight talk phone it ended up broke. I tried it with 3 different ascend y phones. any guide for that for the s3 or with my experience just leave it alone and don't touch it?
the keyboard
is it just me or is the keyboard slow when you type for texting? it cant keep up with me....all my other phones could and the Ram memory is very low too....it very's from 300MB-450MB out of 1.5GB.
is their a good way to make my signal stronger?
I live out in the boonies and every network I have had...it got great signal except Verizon...the most I get is 2 bars mostly just 1 very annoying....(when I had the ascend Y Verizon phone I found a way to boost my signal and I literally got 3-4 bars out where I lived until I tried to flash it with a rom "oopps my bad")

Hardware version: S968C.01
Thanks,

P.S.
I don't know if its locked or unlocked (bootloader)
Checking if USB Debugging is available is just a matter of going to Settings > Developer Options and then looking for a tick mark checked near the option that reads "USB Debugging."
Unfortunately, I cannot speak for root on the Straighttalk SIII being as that I do not own the device (rather I own the Verizon variant). However, a quick forum search might turn up some results...
EDIT: It appears that there is something called "Cydia Impactor" that takes advantage of a couple bugs found in previous versions of android. According to other threads with talk about it, it seems that it works in general for gaining root. Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47412631&postcount=7. Note: Do install a superuser manager on your device right after obtaining root (assuming you gain it) as you don't want everything to have root access!
As for ROMs, what I stated above holds true for these as well. In theory, with an unlocked bootloader (if you have one), then flashing roms is only a matter of checking compatibility with your phone. But I'll save the details about that for now...
The stock keyboard didn't work out for me either. However on Google Play, you can download more keyboards that may prove to be more convenient for you!
As for signal strength, I am currently unaware of any way to actually boost it... However, I do agree that the signal strength I get on my SIII is slightly weaker compared some of the other phones on the market out there, but with a call to Verizon, you may be able to get a signal booster.
Hope that helps

I have looked but, most of them are not the same model. I wanna be safe than sorry besides ive looked at 2-5 forums and they had to be plugged up to a computer. id rather have a simple root in area.
about the bootloader how can I tell if its locked or unlocked? if its locked how can I unlock it?
im not using the stock keyboard. ive downloaded 4 keyboards and they are the same as the original keyboard....its either im typing to fast or the phone dislikes me in every way.
funny story.....
Last night it was storming in st.louis large hail, heavy rain, thunder and lighting etc....well I was having a deep conversation with someone and the power was off/my battery only had 30% left and the last thing she said was "I don't want you to go " then I tried sending a kik message back and it wouldn't send or anything....I tried calling someone and hears what the guy said auto message "your phone as been deactivated" I was like "WEEEEELL aint this funny and very convenient" so I was gonna go to walmart then it started hailing again and I got pelted by penny sized hail...dude they may seem small but they hurt like heck! :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Do NOT try to unlock your phone as it WILL hard brick! I am saying this from personal experience. You will have to spend $50 for a JTAG repair.

Hmm, upon some searching, I found something called "Framaroot" that one can install on a phone (it's an app) in hopes of achieving root access. It supposedly executes various exploits to get SuperSu and the su binary loaded. Anyways, while our S3s are not exactly listed as compatible, the author does mention that if the phone share a similar processor, it may be compatible.

For rooting the sch-s968c samsung galaxy s3 from straight talk, and everything on roms this is the link you want. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516498
Cydiaimpactor method does work. that is how I rooted mine. Works great. I haven't played with roms yet because I have not found the need. But these guys over at that link are playing around finding out what works and what does not.
As far as rooting without the computer I have not seen a way yet. But the cydiaimpactor method takes 4 to 5 seconds, and is very very simple.
There is not a lot more info I can give you because there is not a lot of info in the rooting world about the sch-s968c. If you find anything please share!

He doesn't have access to a computer so he is trying to find a way to root using a apk

Hope ya get it rooted. You could try poot also.. Need no computer and it claims to root all/most QualCom devices. Just know that anything could happen while modding the phone and if stuff were to go down it would take a computer to recover if you did hit worse case.
Impactor is by far the quickest easiest way if you know what you are doing and have access to a PC. However if no access to PC try framaroot as suggested. Go to the framaroot thread here on xda and look for the download link in first post. If you read the first post it tells you the newest version out, always read first instead of expecting to be spoonfed or just jumping in this unprepared. Install the app on your phone and run it. If it fails then you need to find a computer to use Impactor
Hope this helps!
