I have an HTC sensation z7z10a. I purchased this phone to be able to get on AT&T's 3&4g frequencies without having to upgrade my unlimited data plan for non smart phones. So far so good, my phone gets 4g and AT$T is not aware that I have a smartphone.
Naturally after spending enough time in XDA and other phone forums to figure this out I became interested in flashing a custom ROM.
I used the revolutionary method to gain S-OFF, installed CWM, and used CWM to create a backup image. I've managed to fully wipe and then restore to my backup image, so CWM is working.
My problem is whenever I go to flash a custom rom I don't understand which file to select in recovery mode. Every zip I have downloaded, (including the one I need to finally get my phone rooted) opens up to a series of subfolders, none of which contain the files I need. The sub folders are typically : System, Data and META-INF. So I can't get rooted without being able to use the recovery mode to flash.
I used my friend's pc netbook in order to run Revolutionary and install CWM. Now I am using my Macbook Pro to download potential Roms zip files and move them onto my phones SD card. Could this be the problem?
I"ve searched and searched for and answer to this issue to no avail, please help me to figure this out. I'm stumped.
The zip you have to flash is the ROM you download...am I missing something?
You do not need to extract the zip file. Just put it on the SD card and then go to the recovery mode and select the option install zip from sd card and install it. I believe if you flash a custom rom, you would be automatically rooted, so no need to root it separately. Hope this helped

Thanks for this advice, this is my first time attempting this. I think you are right that most roms come with root access so I may be able to skip that step.
I know what you are saying, don't extract the file, just move the zip over as is. Only on my mac the files are arriving as a folder with subfolders, not a zip package. This HAS to be the problem! I will look harder for Mac info on downloaded zips to see if I can figure out why this is happening. Thanks again.
Update:
So I fixed the folder problem by going into safari settings and unchecking the open safe downloads box. No all the zip files I'm downloading are staying intact as zips.
However I just tried to flash revolution hd with no success. The full wipe zip for this rom was a failure as well. I will now try downloading the root zip again and see if rooting first helps at all.
So now I am rooted. Success!

Ah....Steve Jobs and his desire to prevent the user from doing anything useful strikes from beyond the grave.
This is why I won't touch a Mac. They want to do everything for you, even if it's not what you want or need to be done. On the plus side, at least you only have to push 1 button to get the Mac to do the wrong thing!
Glad you figured it out! Be careful with the ROM flashing though. It quickly becomes a life consuming obsession.

I wanted to leave this up for archival reasons though. As of 7-22 I am running dhackers CM10 build with great results. Just don't forget to set max cpu clock back down to 1500 mhz if you don't want it over locked out of the box **

For clarification: The question was asked if one is supposed to follow the original Team Epic Kexec kernel instructions or these steps and the answer is two fold. If your goal is to install the UNOFFICIAL CM9 built by Invisiblek (which is the purpose of this thread), then you follow the steps in THIS THREAD ONLY. There are a couple steps and a couple files linked to in the original Kexec page that will not allow you to install CM9. That page was made for those wanting to try out their Kexec Proof of Concept KERNEL, not install a ROM of any kind.
This thread makes some assumptions, such as you already have a working install of the Android SDK and ADB, you already have the drivers installed, you are using the original USB cable that came with your phone, you know how to move around DOS to get to the directory where you downloaded the files, etc.......those lower level tasks are for another thread.

The following is an adaptation of the CM Kexec kernel proof of concept with the changes in files and steps necessary to load the latest CM9 work in progress. Be advised I take no credit at all. This is the work of Team Epic and Invisiblek. I just put this together for myself and for others who would like to try it with one caveat. DATA doesn't work! Voice and SMS only....and maybe 1xRtt data.....so you will be relying on WiFi for data! You've been warned!
Also, I highly suggest you use a free MD5 Hash checking utility to verify the integrity of the files you are downloading. That is why the MD5 hash is provided, so you can be sure you didn't get the wrong file or a corrupt download that could cause a BRICK!
If you don't follow the directions carefully you can end up with a brick! Ask questions after reading the OP if you still aren't sure. I probably won't know the right answer for sure. You may have to wait on someone with more experience in this to answer your question.
DO NOT ACCEPT AN OTA UPDATE WHILE RUNNING THIS SETUP
1. Download the recovery.img (MD5: f1c01ad20e02751a73188f173eb412ca), which combines our source-based kernel with our previously released CWM v4.
2. Flash the recovery.img following these instructions, that is:

It would be good at this point to read ahead and determine where you will be loading the next file. Keep in mind if you are in stock recovery and choose to wipe data, this will wipe the internal memory.
if you plan to load onto internal memory download this file boot_emmc_boot_img.zip (MD5: 84a3f98c194f6dedc583dbc75ccc34c2)
or
if you plan to load onto sdcard (ext) memory download this file boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip (MD5: 88904d7e69d455ff88756b4d1ad79aac), which are applied in recovery to kexec (boot) the custom boot.img.
5. Place boot.img either on the internal SD card (the /sdcard/ folder), or on the external SD card (the /mnt/extSdCard/ folder).
The boot.img kernel boots directly out of one of these folders, it will not (and should not) be flashed to the device.
6. If you're using the internal SD card, place boot_emmc_boot_img.zip in /sdcard/ as well. If you're using the external SD card, place boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip in /mnt/extSdCard/.
7. Reboot into recovery.
8. If using the internal SD card, select "Install zip from sd card" and then "choose zip from internal sdcard", then "boot_emmc_boot_img.zip". Alternatively, if using the external SD card, select "choose zip from sdcard", then "boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip".
At this point, the device should reboot "in the middle" of applying the update, temporarily booting boot.img. If the update "completes" and returns to the CWM menu, kexec has failed or the wrong recovery was loaded in the beginning. Please check the locations of boot.img, and boot_emmc_boot_img.zip or boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip and verify recovery.img file used was the correct one, verify using an MD5 hash checker.
9. Once booted, the custom kernel can be confirmed by checking "Kernel version" in "Settings", "About device". It should report:

10. To reboot into the stock kernel, select "Restart" from the Power menu, which will actually reboot into CWM recovery. Press the Power button to select "reboot system now" and leave recovery.
11. You cannot simply power on your phone with this setup! In order to power on your phone you will have to hold volume up, home and power to boot into recovery and load the zip file you chose at step 4 where you chose either internal or external memory, so either "boot_emmc_boot_img.zip" or "boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip". If you do accidentally boot up by just hitting power, no big deal, it will give you all sorts of force closes, simply pull battery and boot back up using the Vol up, Home, power method.
If anyone would like to suggest further clarification, please do. To get the stock Google apps such as Play Store get the package HERE and install in recovery
Alternatively a more condensed version of this install procedure has been posted by nbsdx and can be found HERE.

If you want to return to bone stock, simply go to THIS THREAD to get STOCK ROM IMAGE and then put your phone into Odin Download mode by following THIS THREAD and be sure to flash it using the PDA button. It will take a while, probably 20 minutes or so, it will take forever to boot up the first time but you will be on bone stock like new.

Being that we have to use kexec anyhow, it would be nice (especially with the state of current cm9 rom) if we could fully dual boot so as to keep stock system and data for stock kernel.

If you follow the steps in this thread, including using these links for your files, it will work without a problem.
I can't comment on why other guides on other sites using other files don't work.....and not really sure how it applies to this thread. Lets try to keep it on topic. If you have issues with the dual booting instructions, you might start a new thread to address that or jump in irc.freednode.net/verizons3 and graciously ask the people for help
When you flash the the CM9 rom built by Invisiblek it will come back out to CWR menu. At that point in the process I realized I hadn't copied the boot.img file into the root of my sd card, so i left it on the CWR menu, popped out the sdcard, copied the boot.img file over (already had the boot_sdcard_boot.img file on the root of sdcard), and popped the sdcard back in, chose advanced->reboot recovery, then followed the steps in this guide, worked perfectly.

You need to add one line to Invisiblek's updater-script that "flashes" the boot.img to the bootloader partition in the multi boot folder. Check out the sprint cm9 install for the line to add.
I have tested dual booting to work perfectly.

I flashed back to stock, simply because I need to have voice and SMS working. I could deal without 3G/4G data for a little bit and use WiFi, but no SMS/Voice was a deal breaker on my phone. I have to be easily gotten in touch with for work and such. It was fun while it lasted.

No. Different files used, probably a different step or two also. I plan to edit this once CM10 builds are ready for public consumption. These instructions also don't include the automated kexec scripting work done recently that allows your device to cold boot into CM9.

Is there anyway to get the TouchWiz Camera on CM9? I really like that camera app.
I tried just putting it in /system/app and changing the permissions to rw-r--r-- and rebooting and nothing
Then i tried just installing it like a normal apk and it failed.
I would love CM9 if i could just get the stock camera app too work.
BTW im using DHacker29's CM9 and its amazing. So much easier to install.

It probably requires touchwiz frame work. It will take significantly more work than just dropping in an apk

I'm using a TMOUS One S S4 vers and I've rooted and flashed the TWRP recovery. I want to use my stock ROM or one as close as possible to stock and unlock the APN settings so I can get wifi tethering to work. I'm currently on the UnKnown ROM, as it is pretty much stock, but the APN's are still locked. I tried the following tool from this link:

But it still didn't work for me. Is there another way to get the apns unlocked besides a custom ROM?

The flash didn't work I am having trouble getting a flashable zip of it.
But if you use TWRP recovery file manager to copy it over with the instructions and then factory data reset (thats important so the system reads the settings again) and then setup the phone it does work on the 2.35 tmous stock rom.

Thanx for the reply. So I'm assuming you're talking about method #2 in that link. It would be great to use with the stock TMOUS ROM, but I'm having some issues implementing it.
1) Is there a tutorial on how to do the manual method? When I go into TWRP file manager, I see the "system" folder, but there is no "framework" folder there. Also, I'm vaguely familiar with chmod commands. I get lost at "chmod to 644." I know a few fastboot commands to get a recovery flashed from a directory but that's about it.
2) I have issues getting into recovery consistently. This may be a completely different issue but, the instructions I saw said to flash the ROM and then reboot recovery. Then flash the mod to fix the wifi. When I try to reboot recovery, my phone usually starts booting the ROM for the first time. I have to hold down the power button for 14 sec to shut it down and try to get to recovery again. It takes a few times for me to get there. I don't know if this causes problems with the fix being able to work because the ROM is starting to read on 1st boot?
Thanx again for the reply and I'd appreciate if you could shed some light on the manual method.
Nevermind. I figured it out once I played around with TWRP. Very nice recovery and great mod. Everything is working correctly now on the stock ROM. Thanx again
FYI for others: Once you copy the "framework-res.apk" file to your storage card,
1) You have to go into TWRP, mount,
2) Mount the SD card and system by putting checks next to them
3) Goto home screen in TWRP and goto advanced
4) Select file system and navigate to SD Card and find the "framework-res.apk" file where you saved it
5) Select the file and then select "move"
6) Now navigate back by pressing the "up one level" at the top of each list until you get to root.
7) Now find the "system" folder and then the "framework" folder.
8) Select....... can't remember, but there's and option to move it there. It will confirm.
9) Select the file "framework-res.apk" in the directory you just pasted it to and select chmod
10) Type in 644 and select done.
11) Go back to the home screen and select "wipe" and "factory reset"
12) Now reboot system. Done.
APN's are no longer locked.

I'm was using the UnKnown ROM bit I've switched back to my stock ROM so no issues with data. and signal. The mod worked with the stock ROM so I suck with that.You can find it in the link above.

Can you please tell me what framework I am on? Is that the same thing as hboot. I am currently on 1.06 and I see 3.16 under hardware information. Is that compatible with your mod?

Finally I had time to finish my work on Xcover 4. I couldn't disable ForceEncryption by any flashable tool so I prepared 2 version of firmware (Oreo and Pie), both prerooted (Magisk) and free from Force Encryption. Everything except boot.img left untouched, both ROMs are BTU so no brand.
Just flash it with Odin 3.13.3. I recommend to flash CSC_BTU instead of HOME_CSC_BTU. HOME BTU should work as well but then probably You gonna have to format data with TWRP. CSC_BTU is already tested and there are no problems with Encryption.
After flashing just install Lastest Magisk Manager. SafetyNet Passed.

Working on both versions, Oreo and Pie. I didn't test backup and recovery options but flashing is working on both. ADB and MTP are not working.
To remove Security Log Agent notifications use SecurityLogAgent Disable. It will disable this annoying app completely.

You can try to flash it, just backup your data and if something goes wrong just flash it with back with stock firmware.

I don't understand what file I should use to flash with Odin.. in the link you posted sends to a download of a zip file of almost 2gb in which there are many files, so from those files which one should I set in Odin?

I successfully flashed the Pie variant of the two ROMs and got it to work. However, turned out that in an app that I'm developing, for some reason, when my device is equipped with G390FXXU4CSF9_BTU_G390FBTU4CSFA, the app doesn't behave in the same way as when G390FXXU4CSF9_ G390FXEO4CSFA has been installed. That's why I would like to be able to root the XEO-version of the firmware. Moreover, there will be many other non-rooted devices equipped with the XEO-version using the app in the near future.
Having flashed my device with G390FXXU4CSF9_ G390FXEO4CSFA, I tried installing the version of TWRP you have provided but I can't figure out how to install Magisk from there. By default, TWRP can't find the Magisk zip-file that I push onto the device. I tried formatting data, as per this post. The post lead me to believe that the files could be found after formatting but even though there were now plenty of TWRP-related folders, I couldn't find the zip. And as ADB and MTP don't seem to work in recovery mode, I'm unable to get the zip file on board after formatting. Booting to system doesn't work either after allowing modifications for TWRP, which might be due to dm-verity preventing boot, but franky I don't understand much of that topic.
You mentioned that you couldn't disable Force Encryption with any flashable tool. Is that the reason why TWRP (or any other tool) couldn't reach the zip file for Magisk?
This is the first time I've attempted rooting a phone so my knowledge regarding the topic is pretty basic.
So I suppose preparing a prerooted and Force Encryption free version of the firmware might be a possibility? I have no idea how to patch a ROM though. Any advice on how to proceed?

If You just flash magisk with TWRP it will root your phone but after first reboot whole data partition will be encrypted again and you wont be able to flash anything with twrp or modify data partition without full wipe. For some unknown reason this and probably more Samsung models have different structure of files responsible for encryption and because of this none of pre-made patches are working. Only manual kernel modification can safe from encryption, at least for now.
I'm not a developer so I don't know how to prepare patch for this to allow anyone to flash it, I just found few lines of code in kernel You need to modify to disable encryption.

How to flash firmware on linux?
I know that i have to use heimdall but how to load these files into the program because filenames say basically nothing to me.

Also does it delete user data?

1. Flash clean ROM, same as boot you send me)
2. Enable OEM Unlock in Developer settings
3. Flash patched boot with Odin as AP/PDA.
4. Install Magisk Manager app
5. Install TWRP and format data partition, option where you need to type "YES"
6. Reboot system and then back to TWRP. If you can mount data and there are no errors it's done.

Sorry but I never had a chance to use Heimdall. You can't dirty flash this because when your phone is encrypted and you can't replace kernel corrupting data.
But do I lose my data(Apps settings etc.)?
I'm OK with setting everything up back ,but it would be cool if it kept data.
(I'm going to use other computer that has windows on it btw, and I'm going to flash it with odin)
If your data partition is encrypted you gonna corrupt it by changing kernel. It means You wont be able to access, so yes, you will loose it.
What you mean by encryption some option in the Android or what?
If that's what you mean I haven't set up anything like this
Hey everyone, quick post here, may edit later. I made a stock debloated, deknoxed, degoogled (minus play store/play services which can be disabled) ROM for the Galaxy Tab E 8.0 tablet, there's also a few build.prop tweaks for better performance but it's mostly all stock. ALL the bloatware has been removed. This ROM is still odexed for better speed and it does NOT come with root, though I would recommend rooting it with Magisk if you plan to use root apps. Let me know if there's any bugs, I apologize in advance as this is my first public ROM release. You need TWRP installed to flash this. (P.S. sorry for no proper links but the forum doesn't let me use URLs in message due to not enough posts, there's no viruses or spam here, feel free to check yourself mods.
DISCLAIMER: YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA ON YOUR TABLET AFTER INSTALLING THIS ROM! MAKE BACKUPS OF YOUR FILES BEFORE INSTALLING!

Steps to install
1. Download and extract all files and open ODIN
2. With your tablet off, boot to download mode by holding HOME+VOLUME DOWN+POWER then pressing VOLUME UP until it says downloading
3. Click AP button in ODIN and pick the TWRP recovery .tar file then click start
4. After flashing, immediately hold VOLUME UP+HOME+POWER so the tablet will boot straight into recovery
5. Go to WIPE then pick advanced wipe and wipe ALL partitions except for USB/External storage
6. Go to Advanced > ADB sideload and swipe to enable it
7. On your PC with ADB installed, open a command prompt in the location where your ROM file is downloaded and run command

adb sideload EHXZ-Tab-8-Stock-Debloated-Degoogled-Deknoxed-v1.zip
8. When you see AROMA menu on the tablet, follow the steps on your tablet to install the ROM.
9.. (Optional) Uncheck the reboot box in the installation success screen and go back to to ADB sideload option, then flash Magisk/SuperSU or anything else you'd like on your tablet.
10. Tap reboot in TWRP, it will give a message about no OS installed, ignore this and reboot anyway. First boot will take a while, be patient and just leave the tablet alone, preferably plugged into power.

I know this is a zombie thread but this is the latest T377T ROM I could find. Just installed it today and seems to work great, so thanks for sharing. Haven't yet tested my TMobile features (don't have an active SIM at the moment).

I would love to try this rom, but the link to the ROM (electrohaxz.tk/taberom The ROM) doesn't work anymore. Would you be able to share the ROM with me if you still have the file?
Bump, looking to revive an old tablet and a just need a debloated ROM. Would love to just have the zip file that was posted here
