[Q] Low Volume Voice Calls? - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

Hey guys,
I've been experiencing really bad call volumes on this phone :/ people can barely hear me unless I tilt the phone up, move my mouth directly in front of the mic and shout
I've searched and apparently a lot of Samsung phones have this issue. I changed the settings using the service code below, but I think this resets after every boot?
•Go to dialpad.
•Enter this number *#*#197328640#*#*
•This will open the service mode menu.
•Select option [5] AUDIO
•Select option [1] (VOICE CALL)
•Select option [2] HEADSET
•Select option [1] Volume
•Select option [1] SRC Speech RX Volume
•Select option [5] 5_lvl : 87
Click to collapse
Options don't show up under Voice Call but if I manually input the number (the settings button brings up more options), I can access the options.
Anyway to make this change permanent so it doesn't reset after boot? Anyone else having this issue? Would flashing a radio, like Blaze 4G, solve this?
I'm on GOV 3.2

Have you tried cleaning out the microphone opening? You might be able to use a piece of fine wire to ream out the microphone hole along the bottom edge. Or even pop the back off and lift the motherboard out as shown in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466906 to clean the mic passage directly. The microphone is on the back side of the circuit board, with a small hole through the PCB into the mic channel, so there's no risk of poking through the mic membrane by pushing straight into the hole in the bottom of the phone.

Yup dirty mic, I see it all the time at work. Best thing to do is open the phone, but if not then just grab a small pin then gently poke it straight or like if you would do to your ear with a cotton swab.

3.3 has more tweaks added, side note. Blaze4G modem helps with battery and connection speeds and reception definitely, as for crystal clear quality I haven't noticed a difference from that and the stock radio. But it also can't hurt your call quality either. If something goes amiss, restore the default radio.

Didn't they tell you when you were young?
"Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear."
I do not recommend attempting to validate this axiom.

Microphone is clean, this is a pretty new phone and all. This is what I do after every reboot:
1.Go to Service Mode -> *#*#197328640#*#* on Dialer
2. [5] Audio
3. [1] PATH page 1 -> going onto this shows a MENU NOT EXIST but going into Menu, I access Key Input and input 1
4. This brings me to the Headset setting. I pick [1] Volume
5. I change [5]vol_5 to 88.
And that makes everything loud again. Here's the thing, after every reboot, the default level is set at 0? Maybe thats why its so low? Can someone confirm what their default setting on Service Mode is? I guess I'll just have to keep doing this each time I reboot since I don't see any way of making it stick :/
Jin, to default back to stock radio, would I have to ODIN?

My phone shows 0, and it works perfectly.

No. You would not. Check the modem thread. Look for KJ2.

Mine is also 0 with no issues...

Hmm thanks for checking guys. I must have gottten a faulty phone (knew I should have shelled out on the Droid 4 instead -___- ) ... guess I'll try flashing the 4G radio, if not, I'll go back to stock.
PS - I feel stupid for asking but ... does nandroid back up radio too? O.O

Unable to change Sound and Display settings?

I can't seem to get any of my sound/display settings to stick. Even after selecting a ringtone, and hitting OK, going back into the selection just resets to the default AT&T sound :/ I'm using Launcher Pro as my "home screen" and I have rooted the phone. Anyone know how to remedy this situation?
ur ringtone settins.. Are you trying to apply them to google contacts or contacts that are physically on your phone? Also tell us what display changes you are trying to make and exactly the steps you are taking so we can try to replicate this experience at home and advise you better.
settings -> sound and display -> voice call ringtone -> (select different ringtone) -> OK -> home.
It refuses to change to anything but the default AT&T one. It plays all of the other tones, as a preview, but will not stay changed to it.
so lets say you pick bird loop, select ok, and then click voice call ringtone again, the little dot is back next to the att default ringtone?

wow. im speechless. Maybe you should try a factory data reset?
So I have figured out my problem. I did that non-market app fix found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728121 . The problem that I had, was that my settings.db had bad file permissions. I just chmoded 777 the file, and now it can write just fine.
Thanks for that fix, solved the weird quirks I was having.

[HOW TO] Improve your SamChg call quality - No root required

There are 3 types of Vocoders (Voice Encoders/Decoders) on the Verizon network:
13k
EVRC
EVRC-B
"13k" is the oldest vocoder. It takes up the most VZW bandwidth, and may also consume more battery during a call. It is basically an uncompressed encoder, but may be prone to more noise, since it has the least amount of signal processing. Note: If there is a battery penalty, it won't affect you when you are not in a call.
"EVRC" does data compression, and uses variable bitrates to get more efficient use of VZW bandwidth. This is the default setting on your SamChg.
"EVRC-B" is a more modern vocoder that uses variable bitrates more intelligently, along with other signal enhancements to improve quality. Low-level noise should also be reduced with EVRC-B.
EVRC is the default, because the whole Verizon network supports it. It is the "safe bet". However, EVRC-B was implemented on the Verizon network years ago, and should be available almost everywhere by now.
Note: I am not responsible if you brick your phone. Do this at your own risk.
Note: The menu selections below may occur very slowly (They are on my phone). Be sure you see the selections change before going to the next step.
If you want to change your vocoder to EVRC-B (or, to 13k), follow these steps:
On your phone dialpad, dial: **772. You should see a box pop-up for "Enter SPC"
For the SPC, enter "000000"
You will now be in the "TerminalMode Service Menu", with buttons on the bottom for controlling the menu selections. You should see "View", "Edit", and "Done". If not, keep pressing the "down" button slowly, and wait for the screen to update.
Press the "down" button until the asterisk is next to the "Edit" selection.
Press the "Enter" button
Press the "down" button until you see "VOCODER" (This was 11 button presses on my phone). You should see "EVRC" as the selection.
Press the "right" button until you see "EVRC-B" or "13k" (whichever you want to select)
Press "Enter" to save your selection.
Press "OK" to exit the TerminalMode Service Menu screen.
Your phone may reboot at this time. If not, you should probably reboot anyways.
To make sure your EVRC-B/13k selection was properly saved after rebooting, you may want to re-enter the **772 Service Menu and select "View" to check your VOCODER setting.
Good Luck! (And, Good Audio!)
Cheers,
¿GotJazz?
If I've helped you out, send a little "thanks" my way ...
Awesome tip. Trying it now.

That's surprising how easy it is to fix. Thanks!
Thanks, just tried it out, I'll have to let you know over the next few days if I notice a difference!
Thanks for the tip!
From what I've read on previous discussion about vocoders, the difference is mostly (or entirely?) in the quality of your own voice as heard on the other line. Regardless, still a great tip.

Hi, Peter -
Have you noticed any audible difference on your end while listening to a call?
So what encoder have you all found to be the best?

+1, which is the best to use?
I'm gonna give EVRC-B a try,
Yeah wondering if folks have noticed an improvement with this method(after asking whoever they're talking to)

I don't think I really noticed any difference on my end.
I just changed mine to EVRC-B to give it a try as I've never used this one before. On my old touch pro 2 I always switched mine to 13k over standard EVRC and there was definitely a difference on both ends with that phone. EVRC-B was not available on that phone but 13k was an improvement to be sure, especially in speaker phone mode. Your mileage will probably vary depending on where you are and who you're talking to.

OK ...
I guess I'll start asking my Friends & Family(TM) if they hear a difference.
It does sound alot more clear to the other person and sounds like im closer
So does changing to EVRC-B affect both sides of the call? Swear I made a call yesterday and I could barely hear and understand what the hell the other person was saying. She was on a fixed landline too.

Well, hokulus, I tried to install GCv1.8.1, and it was sooo flaky, I had to go back to rooted stock EE4. My phone was pretty much unusable with GCv1.8.1, and I never got to the point of being able to test this modification.
That said, I would expect the Vocoder functionality to be part of the Baseband programming, and not dependent on the Kernel/ROM - so, I'm not sure why you would see the rebooting after pressing "Enter" on GC.
I do know that pressing "OK" while in the Service Menu forces an instant reset, so that's why I suspected your previous post on pressing "OK" instead of "Enter" caused the problem. If you are pressing "Enter", I am not sure why you are seeing the resets.
What happens if you go into the "View" mode instead of "Edit" mode and scroll down to the Vocoder option? Do you see if your selection was saved regardless of the reset?
Cheers,
The OP's post is a bit of a misnomer. 13K is "compressed" it is Qualcomm PureVoice 13k, just like all other codecs, it's a lossy codec that throws away data to make the voice sampling smaller.
They're all lossy compression algorithms, just 13K is the oldest of the three, EVRC and EVRC-B are newer variants on a theme with supposedly better audio quality. Carriers implement them because they use less network bandwidth. One could argue your call might not drop as much because you're taking up less capacity. They all pretty much sound like crap though.
Also, the network can override your manual decision in some situations, so there's no guarantee that choosing a codec manually will get you the codec of your choice.
Also, also, IIRC, the chosen codec is used for your link to<->from the cell net, but it doesn't change what the other user you're talking to is using, so perceived audio improvement on the other end may be negligible in some situations.
Info on the codecs:
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/QCELP
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Enhanced_Variable_Rate_Codec
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Enhanced_Variable_Rate_Codec_B
What aspects of gummy did you find flaky? I'm just curious because I found stock unbearable and occasionally problematic. By contrast I have run every iteration of Gummy, so far, without anything beyond a minor annoyance (generally things fixed by kejar in a matter of days).

Low System Sounds Volume

Is there any way to turn up the volume for the lock screen unlock sound and the selection sound? Everything else on the phone is plenty loud like ringtone, notification tone, call volume, media, etc.... But I can barely hear the screen lock/unlock sound and the selection sound. Also it seems like the haptic feedback is BARELY there. It's so subtle that it may as well NOT be there.

If you do not have the Android SDK installed on your computer you need to install it. Then go to the Windows Start menu and select computer. Then open the Android SDK folder then open the tools folder. When in the tools folder hold shift and right click anywhere it is open space in the window. Select open command window here. When the window opens up connect your device via USB cable (make sure you have USB debugging checked in development in Settings) and then type the following into the command window:
Code:
fastboot getvar all
You will be looking for version-main the number beside it is your firmware version.
(Or)
On your device, press < Home >
Select < System Settings >
Select < About phone >
Look for ‘Android version’ or ‘Firmware version’ to see the exact version your device is running...

Android Version is 2.3.6 I figured out the sound issue. It was some setting that was restoring from an old phone when I would factory reset. But the haptic feedback is still barely there. It's so little, it might as well not be. The vibrate function works fine which I believe is off the same motor?

The haptic feedback on 2.3.6 is much lighter than that of 2.3.5, so that's normal. There's a thread for restoring the haptic feedback of 2.3.5 here (somewhere), I'll see if I can find it...

[Q] Volume setting

Sup guys, new here and I browsed around and didnt find this, maybe its just a setting;
But Im on my new S3, and when I go to hit the volume rocker down (to turn it on silent or up to loud so I can hear call rings) Its changing my In-game volume only. Now I woke up to this, maybe I was asleep and changed something I do not know. But this is a hassle, I know I can change the volume on all three settings by clicking the gear icon to get the pop up window but its seriously a hassle, I want the default volume rocker to control the phones notifications, vibrate function etc. Is this a easy setting fix?
Also, side note to the main problem, but has there been an update or setting put into place for the re-sized text on webpages? I switched from my HTC Thunderbolt and it did that automatically, I read in some reviews this was one of the S3's downfall. I've looked through the IE settings and nothing appears on that subject. Am I just going to have to hold it landscape or scroll to read USA Money all the time?:crying: Hopefully not, but any input is appreciated bros.

It will usually change the volume with respect to your current context, I've seen: if in a game with sound (which is most of them on my phone), it will change the overall Game/media volume, but if on a home screen it changes my ringtone volume. I also get appropriate volume changes for when in a call and/or on my Bluetooth earset.
I only know of going into Settings->Sound or using the gear shortcut in the notification bar or when changing any other sound to alter my System volume.

No, the stock browser has degraded in my opinion: it has no auto-wrap of text for zoomed pages. Opera is now my default browser because of various reasons, but this was the highest priority one to fix (and, Opera re-wraps quite well, IMHO). I have seen other owners here who liked Dolphin browser, too.

In the stock browser, there is actually a setting (not on by default) that makes it auto wrap. Although I use chrome, my roommate uses default and has no problems.

There is an "auto-fit pages" setting under the Settings->Advanced submenu, though this is not the same as word-wrapping, I've found.
If your roommate has a different setting they use, that would be interesting to learn.

Problem fixed, it was a weird app I recently installed that was asking weird permissions, after I uninstalled and restarted, problem fixed.
But not to be a problem after problem thread, but my Burst mode in taking pictures doesn't take the 20 second burst mode, only the 8 "Best shot". When trying to take a 20 picture burst, it only takes one and goes to processing. What could that be?

low in call volume

so ive read all the threads i could find on the issue with no conclusive answers. my fathers pixel has insanely low volumein call when its not on speakerphone. ive browsed every forum i could and tried every suggestion available. anyone know of a quick fix? he needs this phone for work.
Having the same problem with my XL. I sent the google store a message and they called me back. The guy said that's how it's supposed to be. I told him I it was wasn't loud enough at max level and he suggested that I go to the google store and try some of the volume boosters. Not real happy with this!
Here's the email he sent me....
If you are having any audio, speaker, or microphone issues with your device, please follow the steps below.
Step 1: Update to the latest version of Android OS.
Go to Settings > About phone / tablet > System updates and select Download or Check for updates
If your device is modified or rooted, revert your device to original factory image since troubleshooting steps may not work on modified/rooted devices. You can use our Nexus factory images to re-image your device.
Step 2: Remove obstructions.
Remove any cling film, stickers, covers/cases/bumpers, or anything else that can be obstructing the device.
Step 3: Enable safe mode on your device.
Ensure your device's screen is on, then press & hold the Power button.
Touch and hold the Power off option in the dialog box.
Tap OK in the following dialog to start safe mode.
To exit safe mode, turn your device off and on again.
If you discover that the issue doesn't occur while your device is in safe mode, it's likely that a third-party app or Android OS modification is causing the issue. You can start to use and narrow down your installed apps to try to pinpoint the specific app. When the culprit is identified, you can uninstall the app or contact the developer of the app for further support as follows:
Navigate to play.google.com.
Find the app and click on it to view its main page.
Scroll down to the "Additional Information" section. Here, you'll see "Contact Developer" options.
Step 4: While in safe mode, turn off Bluetooth.
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and if Bluetooth is on, tap the slider near the top to turn Bluetooth off.
Step 5: While in safe mode, make sure the volume is on.
Go to Settings > Sound.
In Volume settings, slide all three indicators all the way to the right to make sure all sound is on and at max volume.
Note: When each slider is adjusted, a sound will be heard.
Step 6: If the volume buttons on the side of your phone aren't working, check Switch Access settings.
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Switch Access.
If the slider near the upper right corner is on, tap it, then tap OK to turn it off.
Step 7: Check if the issue is resolved.
Play with the volume levels to hear sound.
Make a test phone call.
Use Google Now to test your microphone.
If your issue isn't resolved, continue to the next step.
Step 8: Reset your device to factory settings.
If you're still unable to resolve the issue, or if the issue is so severe that you can't boot your device into safe mode, resetting your device to factory settings may help. Resetting your device to factory settings will erase all local data on your device. Backup of your personal local data (pictures, music and video files) is recommended.
To backup personal data on your device
To reset your device to factory settings
If your issue has been resolved, great! Let us know.
If your issue was *not* resolved and your device still experiences audio issues, call us or reply to this email and reference that you already went through our Audio troubleshooting steps which included resetting your device to factory settings.
If you have any more questions, please reply to this email. I'm happy to help!
Thanks!

i have the same type of issues. The volume on this device is just too low. I constantly try to turn up the volume, but when maxed out, it stinks. I'm on the latest version of android 8.0.0 as of this posting. safe mode didn't solve anything. factory default didn't fix anything either. Same Low volumes. I have no issues with volumes on my older Note5. makes me wonder if i need to switch over the new Note 8.
Maybe i'll have better luck if i root the phone and find an app to boost the volumes.
