Root without unlocked bootloader - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any posibility of rooting the tf300t without unlocking the bootloader. Sorry if there is some info about it but I read someone did this but couldn't find how he did it.

I haven't heard anything yet. Keeping my fingers crossed as I did not save root before upgrading and the unlock tool fails for me.

If on jb, there is no known method at this time.

But is there any on ics? Will I lose root access after update?

on ICS: i use this method, worked great for me (make sure you download the version 1.1 which states it works for TF300, version 1.0 won't work for TF300). No need to unlock bootloader

Then use Vodoo OTA RootKeeper to save root when and if you update.
Consider NVFlash b4 uptate to jb.

Where can I find the version?

And should I wait to upgrade firmware until I decide if I should root or not?

QUESTION #1:
To find the version of your Firmware, go to:
Settings-->About Tablet-->And Then Scroll Down To "Build Number"
QUESTION #2:
That all depends on if you want to "UnLock" your device or not. If you unlock your device, then you can just root with CWM and then flash root.
If you "UnLock" your device then your WARRANTY IS VOID. And you cannot get ANY help or Customer Service for your device.

i highly recommend rooting while your at build version .17. you can easily remove your root using sparkyroot incase you change your mind, it's as easy as all you do is press a button labeled "unroot".

Sparkyroot was dead simple. Root and unroot with the push of a button.

Unable to update to Jelly Bean

I have been checking for updates over and over for the past 48 hours and gotten no update. I have heard that this is due to the fact that I unlocked my bootloader, even though I did nothing with it after that. I didn't even root it.
Can someone tell me how to lock the bootloader or which file I need to download to go back to the stock rom? This is starting to annoy me.
Did you even read the warning when unlocking the bootloader? It says you void your warranty and are running non stock firmware and will not receive updates. You have to manually update.
Also, you cannot re-lock the bootloader.

My whole point is that I did not run non-stock firmware. All I did was unlock the bootloader. I installed no roms, nor did I root.
I have read that if I flash back to the .29 stock rom it will re-lock the bootloader and allow me to receive updates.

Even if you're running stock firmware, and not rooted, unlocking bootloader is still unlocking bootloader, and you DID unlock your bootloader, so you DON'T get OTA update. and there is NO WAY to re-lock the bootloader, even if you can re-lock it, asus still know your bootloader is unlocked, because when you used the bootloader unlock tool, it sent your tablet info (serial number i think) to asus server.
Sadly it is true no OTA JB for you.... but if your dead set on getting JB read this....

This.
And in Asus' eyes an unlocked bootloader is not stock firmware....even if it completely stock.
Also really flashing old firmware......if even possible......will not really lock your bootloader

Yes i bought it brand new sealed. I dont understand why i never got ota updates..
Also whenever i click on "Check Update" it doesnt do anything. Not even a response saying no update available or anything like that.

maybe it started to download some ota update and hanged without you noticing, lefting you in "limbo" - check if there is some file in /cache (you should be able to see it with esfile even without root, but you need root to do any change) or some log

[Q] Does the new ICS/JB adb root exploit work for TF300? No need to unlock bootloader

Has anyone tried this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
a small script which is able to root ICS/JB phones. It uses a remount timing issue in Androids "adb restore" service.
So normally it should work on nearly all ICS/JB devices

This method is pretty new and is supposed to allow for root without the need to perform a bootloader unlock.
This exploit is supposed to work up till 4.1.2.

You don't need an unlocked bootloader for root since forever

Didn't work on my 300t
Didn't work here either. Tested it with WW 10.4.2.13, debugging and install from unknown sources enabled. Maybe in the next versions.

Somebody else asked the question few weeks ago.
No, it won't work with the TF300
Asus made the exploit useless

it's a nexus, it always work but it's better to fully unlock it, it got official miui, not the best for tablet at the moment but it's miui :silly:
never mind i miss read, i thought "will it work with nexus 7?".
i don't think so nexus don't even need to be online to unlock it's as easy as "adb fastboot unlock" from boot loader screen, the current asus method for the tf300 is install the app, contact server , blank device number and unlock(ICS)

[Q] Serial Number Unknown

I've just bought a second hand tf300 of Amazon and saw it still had ICS on it. When I tried to OTA update to JB it wouldn't. Closer inspection showed that in settings status the serial number is listed as unknown. I've now updated manually to JB and CWM was not installed so I dont think its unlocked and rooted. However I just want to run it with stock receiving OTA updates. Any ideas how I can fix the serial number issue or bypass to get OTA?

Here is my guess. You are unlocked. You can't load something like cwm if you're not.
I'm guessing before you got the tablet, the previous owner unlocked it, screwed it up, sent it to Asus for repair, and Asus returned it working, but loaded code somehow to eliminate the serial. This has happened to others, or so I've read. Feel lucky if you're unlocked. Users who have been reporting this problem have said their tablets are locked, and since there's no serial, they can't use the tool to unlock it.

CWM was not installed when I received it but is there any way of knowing if the unlock tool has been run previously? If I'm stuck doing manual updates how long does it take the ota updates to appear for download on the Asus site?

When you boot, do you see "this device is unlocked" in small white text on the upper left corner? that's how you tell.
Btw, unlock doesn't mess with the serial number.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using Tapatalk
The guy you bought it from bricked the unlocked tablet and send it to Asus for repair. They then performed a full reflash but forgot or didn't repair the partition that holds the device ids. You can send it back to Asus for repair and they will fix the serial number issue but even after that you won't be able to receive OTA updates and you won't be able to unlock the device again.

I don't see the "this device is unlocked" message on booting. I tried to run the unlock tool but get an error message. Guess I'm screwed for OTA or unlocking then. A newby question though, if I just want to root (mainly to install adblock and titanium backup, 6 axis etc), do I still need to unlock? If so, will there ever be a root without unlocking ie Debugfs?

You do if you're running jb. If you found a means to do it without unlocking and on jb, please post it, and I don't mean carrying over root from ICS. Some don't have that option.

I think that the best solution for you is to return to Asus your TF300 with the invoice, cause you bought this second hand on Amazon, and normally they should repair it to you without problem.

At the moment, you cannot root only your tablet if it's on JB bootloader.
If you want a root on JB bootloader, you need to unlock before
i have a TF300 that is having the same problem, i can not unlock the bootloader with the asus app... now is there another method to unlock the bootloader?
unfortunately not. You are stuck with Stock.

[Q] How to root TF700T on current firmware from ASUS?

Hey I've had my tablet since release and have been updating it incrementally as the updates came out while progressively watching the Android Dev. section for progress on the custom recoveries and custom ROMs.
My question today is, how do I, if it's possible with any current rooting method(s), root my TF700T? Do I still need to use the ASUS bootloader unlocking tool or is there an alternative that doesn't use their unlocking tool?
Thanks

You can downgrade to ICS, then root, use OTA RootKeeper, and apply incremental updates via the dlpkgfile method (manually applying OTA updates). There is a thread somewhere on this forum that explains how to do it, just use the search function.
Yeah I've seen that; I was just curious if there was anything else that I may've missed.
Thanks for your response
