Should I get the 3G version? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Even tho I have T-Mobile?

If u have the classic plan unlimited data for tmo is 30. If u have the value plan its 20. Its suppose to be TRUE unlimited.
So if u have a smart phone already(I have the sg2) can simply tether(share) mobile data from ur phone to ur tablet. Saves u $$150!

Shop around, however I'm in Australia.
I pay $12. Monthly, no contract, for 1.5GB data, $500 worth of calls a month.
I think 3G is the way to go, otherwise if I wanted something light and portable, I'd just get an ultrabook.
My Note cost me 599. AUD, 16gb 3G version.

In Australia it's a no-brainer as you can get a pre-paid sim from just about anywhere (even the local 7-Eleven) and still get great low data rates with no contract.
I can get top-ups that are valid for 365 days - great for low usage or letting your use change a lot from month to month - but it's still only $15/GB - which in Australia is decent.
As for whether you can just wifi-tether with your phone, well you could but to me that is just that little bit extra hassle - tempting me to use the tablet less. To look something up on the tablet would mean pulling two devices out - one from your pocket and one from your bag - and it'd be easier just to use your phone instead. It'd probably mean I'd be tempted to use the tablet a bit less.

Buy 3G. Tethering will kill the phone quickly and you will be left with nada

my only concern is if i get the the 8000 will it work with my t mobile SIM card? Like make call send text/MMS and 3G not EDGE ?

You would have to compare the frequencies that work in the states for AT&T and what the note 10.1 uses...
I know Telstra here in Oz has decided to go their own way with 4g making ANY 4G phone I buy here COMPLETELY incompatible in any other country and any 4G phone I can buy less overseas won't work on Telstra's network at 4G speeds...

If you are on AT&T you will get HSPA+, no problem.

Want unlimited everything? Data, messaging, and calling? Read on

For this to work you must have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and be running on T-Mobiles 4G network. (If you don't know how to do that please know, there is a way to get 4G on this phone on T-Mobiles network if you have an unlocked device[you can get an unlock code on eBay] read around the threads) so let's get started.
So if you have this crazy awesome device your going to want the best for it right? And at amazing prices huh? Well to do that I reccomend doing the following join T-Mobiles Monthly 4G plan the $30 one. This is what it offers you...
-Unlimited data at 4G speeds but after 5GB's of usage your throttled down to 3G or Edge can't remember...
-Unlimited Text Messaging
-100 minutes
So why if its only 100 minutes why is the tread title saying I can get everything unlimited?
Well using the downloadable Skype app from the Google Play Store you can subscribe to one of there packages for unlimited minutes like the one that is $2.99 a month for unlimited US and Canada calling
*So at 4G speeds calling is perfect
And in total what does your monthly bill come to? $32.99 + tax WHOA! That beats the $100 a month crap!!! So I'm just here to share this with you guys and I hope you find it helpful and before you tell me I posted in the wrong place....I didn't. This is specifically for the Skyrocket...and well this thread is "skyrocket" so yeah. Enjoy!

Good pointers although it isn't skyrocket specific.
If you want the same thing on rogers without using Skype, hit me up. I have access to unlimited voice plans.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
$100 a month is nuts, and I thought Rogers was expensive. I only have 200 min a month and never use 2 of them.
or you could use grooveIP and pay 4.99 once, after the first month at 34.99, you'd be at 30/month.
or u could just use bobsled and make calls for free lol.
45-50 dollar monthy is the best plan unlimited everything including minutes, i believe it has 2 gb unlimited data but you can bypass the data throttle with different apn settings.
Lemme know when you AT&T users can convince AT&T wireless to allow you to drop your minutes plan while till being able to retain our number, texting, and data. I'm at $100 per month as well (minus my 20% corporate discount) with the lowest minutes plan, unlimited texting, and unlimited 4G data.
My service provider is Tbaytel in canada, they are partnered woth rogers. For $50/mo. I get 200 daytime minutes, free evenings and wknds, unlim text, and 5gb of data (much more than i'll use in a month since wifi is so readily available.). I get this plan because I'm a "student" (which means I'm friends with the guy that works there.). Normally this plan would be $110, so I figure I'm not doing too shabby.
Sent from my SGH-I727R using xda premium
I get 200 mins, nationwide my 10, unlimited messages/pic/video, call display, voicemail, vvm, evenings and weekend at 6, free Rogers one number services (Skype for free) and 6 gigs of data. $62. And then 40% off of that. My fiancee has the same plan. Our combined bill is about 75 or 80 bucks.
Oh, and they keep giving me this Rogers mobile TV thing that I never use.

Anyone got any tips for someone traveling internationally? Att charges an arm and a leg to call text over seas.
Edit, maybe Google Voice? What would Google voice cost to text/call people in England while I'm in England, and to text/call people in the US while I'm in England?
Edit 2: gvoice doesn't accept international texts so that's out. But AT&T wants .99c a minute, and .50c a text. Which is insane. I could unlock my phone and go with a local gsm provider, but even local providers will charge me more for texting back to the US. Any other suggestions that don't need data? Can I forward my US gvoice number to an English phone. So text/calling to the US is free, and then use a prepaid local sim for local stuff?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Buy a Skype international calling plan there probably 3-5 dollars for England. And for texting use a texting app over wifi or 2G/3G/4G

Nooo. To do it you order a sum off there website 2 dollars and but a 30 dollar card at Walmart or best buy and activate it through there.

For those of us not covered by T-Mobile, you can also look into StraightTalk. They've recently offered a "bring your own device" service, where you purchase the sim, and can use any device.
$45+tax gets you unlimited calling, text, and data. (Although I've heard about a 3GB soft cap on the data)
Nice part is that you can either Select AT&T or T-Mobile as your carrier. You just tell them which SIM you want when ordering. Put in the APN from their website, and you are good to go. They even allow you to port your number.
[Edit] Since I can't post links, just go to straighttalksim[dot]com
Of course it's prepaid with no contract. You can use the "auto refill" option on their website so you never run out of credit..but who cares since it's unlimited anyway. Worth a look if you own the phone and don't want to pay $100 for service.
I unlocked my skyrocket and got a Tmobile Sim, however I am only getting edge in a 4g area. How do I get 4g?

Figured it out, needed a T989 modem. However, 1 thing the OP left out is, that plan of 100 min, unlimited Web and unlimited txt is only valid for phones purchased from Walmart. You can't get a Sim from Tmobile store or their website, has to be from Walmart with one of Tmobile's pay as you go phones.

Well then there lying cuz this is what I did. I bought a Skyrocket 4G off of craigslist unlocked it using a eBay unlock code. And bought a t mobile sim off of there website hers the link it has to be the T-Mobile Monthly 4G Activation Kit http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit its $1 right now and has like $3 Inside. So its pretty much free. When you get it you activate your phone with that.
This plan has been discussed on slick deals for I think over a year now. Tmobile 3G and 4G is essentially the same thing. You will be throttled to edge after 5gb. Also you need to buy the sim online NOT in store to activate online. Else you will need to call and specifically request this plan, only new customers are eligible.
For a full proof quick turn around, get the cheapest phone at walmart and sign up for this plan and switch the sim into your phone.

This has been angering me for two days. Been to three different walmarts and cant find the $30 dollar activation card everyone is talking about.
Edit- Finally figured that out. I was also only getting edge. I tried flashing a T989 modem, and still only get edge. hmmm. Wondering if I didnt waste my money.

Anyone running on Simple Mobile and getting Wifi Calling to work?

Hiw did you get it to work if so?
Anyone?
Yes, I went to simple on my phone last week and my wife's today, wifi working no problems on both. Use latest stable cm7.2.0 and go to settings, wireless, mobile networks, access point names, check the simple circle and reboot.

After years of the Tmobile $250 a month no matter what your plan. I had 2 phones with 10gig plans for $250, went down to 2gigs on both, $250 a month. Not only is simple as fast if not faster, even though its Tmobile's network, its truly unlimited high speed Internet! No limits, $60 a month, period.

Totally agree. I was paying $120/month with sprint. It was a $99 plan but with all their bull shart taxes and fees, it came out to $120/month and whatever else they decide to charge you for. Simple mobile has no surprises. $60 flat a month for unlimited everything and if you dont pay you dont get service, simple as that. Once you pay for the next month, phone is back on, and also no extra fees, simply unlimited. I love it.
Oh and make sure its a tmobile phone you are hooking up or you wont get 4g beooooooooooooootch!

Good to know... on the subject of WiFi calling I was looking for it as well. I do like what you say about the cost, but seeing how my current GSM phone didn't get reception at my house with TracFone; I am looking for a network which can use WiFi when I am in my house.
Seeing how I'm home most of the time I will need to be able to receive phone calls at my house. I did hear that Metro PCS is also a T-Mobile carrier phone system which can use WiFi calling. I do believe you phone needs to actually support WiFi calling in order to do so.
I have a ZTE Axon 7 mini which is currently on Marshmallow(Android 6.**) however the Nougat (Android 7.**) OS is in Beta testing and once that is done my phone will have WiFi calling ability with T-Mobile. I say all of this due to the fact the phone was only $210 with 3gb RAM (Memory), 32gb ROM, 5.2" AMOLED display, Voice & Finger Print, NFC, dual Nano GSM or SDCard & GSM. Honestly I love the phone so much I'm going to find a network to use it on... I is quick responsive and in a month I'll have Nougat as well. I paid nearly as much for another phone which is just god Awful :crying: Samsung Galaxy Prime I think is the model.
I've been shopping for an affordable phone and the only one which has the same specs is Amazon phone, but they strip out the NFC card for US customers, which seems to be the norm. All other reasonably priced phones seem to neglect NFC or RAM. I have been using mine to surf web/play games/Audio Book player till I actually use all the minutes I have on TracFone or Nougat is released. :victory::silly:

Verizon, att, or sprint can't decide!?

Right now I have Verizon and can upgrade next month but my contract ends in december if I upgrade with Verizon I'll loose my unlimited I was thinking about going to att cause I'd get an extra gig for the same price then was thinking about sprint cause they have the cheapest plan and unlimited but no 4g I either want to get the HTC evo lte/htc one x or the S3. So I guess I'm wondering if I should break my contract and get another gig with att, go with sprint for unlimited but only 3g for who knows how long or should I just stick with Verizon?
Sent from my Kindle Fire
Att is good but expensive bad covrage in buildings. Varizon is kind of limited have good signal inside building 850 band is great. Sprint and t-mo cheaper but weak signal data slow. In my area t-mo is using atts towers. Sprint is cheap... but you ge alot of CAN You hear me nowwwww. JM2C.
Signed &
I really, really hate VZ. Been with T-Mobile for 14 years and very happy. Good service and best prices. Very good coverage in my area.
Speaking of coverage... Coverage with any carrier is EXTREMELY location-dependent. Coverage maps can only give approximate coverage areas. Signal strength within a coverage area can come and go from mile to mile, block to block or even room to room.
People are constantly asking about coverage but trying to give meaningful advice about expected coverage is just worthless. It is. The only thing that really works is first, check a map to get a rough idea what to expect. Pick a provider that shows good coverage in the area then actually try their service in places you expect to use it. Walk around the house, work, etc and see if it drops calls or loses data connection.
It's the only way to be fairly sure you'll be happy with any provider's signal quality.

Yea I'm starting to hate Verizon as well with the shared data andno option for the individual plans anymore unless your grandfathered in like me but that will probably change next year like there doing with the unlimited plans. Both att and Verizon have about the same coverage in my area. Sprint has cover mostly in my area but some dead zones. And tmoblie only has voice in my area so that's out of the question. I'm thinking I'll stick with Verizon even though I really don't want to... was also thinking about a prepay smartphone but none in my area has good enough coverage.

But being that Verizon is CDMA, phones sell much cheaper here and on eBay. You could get decent phone for $300ish, not use your upgrade, and keep unlimited. Just a thought.

Locked bootloaders prevent custom images/roms from being loaded on the device. A good example of that is the now ancient DROID X on VZW there was a huge fuss about their being a chip that would destroy the phone and ish, but I digress, it essentially makes it so you can only load VZW Official or VZW based roms. No AOKP, No CM- anything etc.
If you're not into that, it's not a big deal. But I, as a flashaholic must have unlocked bootloaders.
Now carrier wise, Tmo is better because if you exceed data they just slow you down.
Att (mine) charges $10/GB over 3GB so 2GB over costs you the same as the 5GB plan essentially.
Sprint... Well do you want people to hear you?
But as it was said before, coverage is the deal breaker. But Tmo is also adding brought spectrum from VZW, which should prove interesting since the Tmo/Att merger got the kaibosh

I just upgraded with Verizon which forced me to change to a shared plan from unlimited. I was bummed about this, but Verizon has been amazing to me.
Here's how I justified it. Largest network/Best service. I had unlimted data...I rarely use more than 100 - 500mb as I have Wifi at home and at work/school. So it wasn't really a loss. Check out your data use...do you really use that much data? (You could, I'm just sharing my experience)
I use around 1.8-2.5G a month and how smart phones are getting better and better I can see data use going up as well I don't have wifi t work and my wifi at home is choppy.

So did they make you join the shared plan or did you have the option to drop down to 2g from unlimited?

Data on AT&T unlimited gophone plan

I just got ATT unlimited gophone plan for $50 a month. It says unlimited voice, text and data, however data does not work no matter what ROM I flash. I get a H signal and the APN settings are correct however for some reason data does not work. My phone is a Nexus i90020a for ATT so it should work. Does anyone else have this problem and a possible solution? Thanks!
If its not a smartphone approved for that plan, it wont work unless you add a smartphone data plan. The only way around this is using an unbranded or a phone not on att databases so it cant detect your model based on imei, since they only keep records for their own phones. But your nexus is a att model and they know it so its gonna be tough getting data on the 50 dollar plan
For example in my case, im using the same plan to have unlim everything and i ONLY use international phones and havent had any issues: Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus, and now HTC One X

Turned off 3g and it works on EDGE. I guess if everyone was downloading gigs of unlimited data their network would crash so they only give you 2g. Thinking dumb phones can only download so much on limited technology. Im in wifi all day anyway, only for emails etc when im out of wifi range.
I got the ATT Fusion on the prepay plan and pay for minutes used only. Can still use Wifi for emails, texting, and some calls.
Since this is my first 'smart phone' it was a good way to start and avoid the higher charges for data I don't need to use.
But....having flashed new roms and got used to operating it with various apps the bug has bit me to move on up in class.
I'm thinking about the Galaxy Nexus or maybe even a tablet.

[Q] Question regarding AT&T and Straight Talk..

So today I went in and set up a plan with AT&T on their mobile 2GB share plan(not prepaid). Got a sim and now awaiting my n5. I have been reading on here that Straight talk has a plan for $45 a month which includes LTE. So my question is, Will I get the same coverage, Same speeds on Straight talk that I would get from AT&T? If this is the case, I feel like its a no brainer to get straight talk instead. I am usually on wifi at work and at home, so I only need 2gbs.
Also, How would I go about setting up service on straight talk?

I went from ATT to ST. I get identical cell coverage (in fact, it even says AT&T as the carrier)
I notice the internet is slower - it looks like they throttle it by default. . Also once you hit 2.5gb of internet they will significantly throttle it.
However I am overall happy... Paying less than 50% and like you I am usually on WiFi.
You just order the sim from their website and put it in the phone.

well there was a whole thread on how none of peoples mms messages were not sending. mine didn't either. even though it clearly showed sent on my phone. even text sometimes failed. could it have been teething issues because of LTE just launching maybe. could have been my note 3 when I had it maybe. plus I don't want to be throttled and I want to use my data however I want to use it. plus when you send via text or mms your basically going through a middle man first when on a MVNO and sometimes things can get lost in transition. maybe it was AT&T? I I will never know. but I rather pay the extra 13 bucks its worth it to me rather then be aggravated.

Would I be better off doing Aio pro plan for $70/month or stick with AT&T mobile share w/2gb for $105 after taxes... Forget price, I'm more concerned about speeds and coverage for LTE.
AT&T has excellent coverage in my area and I don't travel much. Aio pro comes with 7Gb as we'll.....
