My Atrix 2 ME865 wont root! - Motorola Atrix 2

okay so i stumbled across the idea of getting my atrix 2 rooted,
so i finally get all the drivers installed that i needed for adb to recognize the phone and then this happens, saying permission denied, not quite sure what is happening
also i have a picture of what it says exactly which i can send to you if that would further help,
any help at all would be much appreciated!

Which method to root are you using, and which firmware/software version is you device currently running, and lastly do you have USB Debugging enabled on your device?

Can you please check if /data/local/12m exists (and writable)? All these moto ICS root scripts depends on this vulnerability: http://vulnfactory.org/blog/2011/08/25/rooting-the-droid-3/ Would like to know if HKTW does things differently.

i tried accessing it via the computer and also through my phone using root explorer, but to access that folder says my phone needs to be rooted, so no luck, how do i go about flash the asia retail .img will that make any difference ?

Android-Wifi-Tether on Sprint 2.1 RUU

I went from a stock 1.5 to 2.1 using the Sprint 2.1 RUU and all is well. I understand it's a dev build and as such is already root but when I trying installing android-wifi-tether (both 2.0 and 1.6) it all looks well except when I touch the icon to start and it fails. The 1.6 version did report I didn't have root.
What do I need to do in ADB/shell to ensure the proper permissions are there for AWT? This is the last thing I want to get working and I'm happy.
Do I need to remount the filesystem as rw? Add superuser? Not sure what's needed.
Please help.

I haven't done anything since flashing the 2.1 RUU. What steps do I need to do to get busybox and su working?
if you installed the RUU that was just 'leaked' (from what i understood our 2.1 builds are based off this ruu already). The build does not include busy box or anything for that matter that is required for wireless tether-
damageless said:
Here is a link to the latest RUU from Sprint.
You cannot simply extract it. This still has root since it is a test release. I recommend just doing an adb pull of your system directory after you flash it. Don't do this when the final one comes out or else you might be stuck without root.
You will need to add busybox, patch sh and su, and make sure that you do another recovery image and such. I also recommend adding Superuser.apk and stuff. If you use the Desire build.prop, you can get most of the protected apps working.
Enjoy.

Add SU and make sure you have USB debugging on (Menu/Settings/Applications/Development/USB Debugging). This is needed so when you try to start the WIfi Tether app that is says do you allow root permissions.

Who told you that the RUU was rooted already? It's not. Why would it be? Sprint has no interest in you being root.
As for why do you have to install busybox? Because the application requires it.
It's rooted because it's a dev release. It just doesn't appear to have busybox or superuser installed

The leak actually is rooted. It's an engineering leak, so root can work his magic- but only from the adb shell.
why do you need superuser?
superuser requires root, if you had root, you wouldnt need it.
you can just dl the wifi tether for root from the market
program and it would work right?

NEW 2.3.4 MT4G Downgrade Instructions...

I had the issue of downgrading the NEW out of box 2.3.4.... I was given this link by neidlinger. I had to edit the ending of it to get it to work but it worked, and is working great. Here is the link, and below it is my edit of them.
P.S. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE LINKS TO DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAMS YOU NEED....IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THEM DOWNLOAD THESE AND REPLACE THEM.(JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE) It wouldn't work for me until I re-downloaded and replaced them.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide
Downgrading to 1.17.531.2
If the HTC Glacier is running a Gingerbread firmware (2.xx.xxx.x) (Settings » About Phone) you need to downgrade the device first in order to root. If the HTC Glacier is already running 1.17.531.2 or lower you can skip to the Rooting the HTC Glacier section.
1. You will need ADB on the computer to proceed thru this process. Follow the Android SDK guide, to get the ADB shell on the computer.
2. Download fre3vo, misc_version 0.2 & the 1.17.531.2 firmware:
o fre3vo: Download
md5: 010e076a4a93be876579711bf8934c70
o misc_version 0.2: Download
md5: 1f40aaf88d1bf15775631a58c4361218
o 1.17.531.2 firmware: Download
md5: 49d07f0ee7de1765a6a84cb12fa53110
3. Unzip the fre3vo & misc_version packages to the same folder as adb (the /platform-tools folder within the Android SDK folder).
4. Make sure the filename of the firmware is PD15IMG.zip exactly or it will not work and copy it to the same folder as adb.
5. Connect the HTC Glacier to the computer via USB.
6. On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:
adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell
chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
/data/local/tmp/fre3vo -debug -start FAA90000 -end FFFFFFFF
adb shell
NOTE: You should have the "#" sign instead of the "$". If you do, you have temporary root, and can continue on. If you have the "$", then the exploit has failed, refer to xda developers, RootzWiki, or #G2Root for further assistance.
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.00.000.0
exit
7. Now that misc version has been downgraded, the HTC Glacier is ready to have the firmware downgraded. On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:
adb reboot bootloader
8. Use Volume up/down keys on the HTC Glacier for navigation and Power key for confirmation. Select Bootloader to flash the 1.17.531.2 firmware.
( IT MAY AUTOMATICALLY START )
Once finished you can Root the device by following the instructions on this link…..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996

The bootloader does support the fastboot protocol (and some obscure methods of booting a kernel via JTAG), but it's locked down to the point that you can't even get fastboot to recognize the device.
So no luck there
ViperMod is your answer I believe
I've not had to root since any version of ICS, but many are have success with ViperMod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21009605
You might have to drop back to a 9.2.2.17 or 19 but there are lots of roms out there that are still on that version. I would give it a try on the 9.2.2.3 though, my guess would be it will work. cheers.

It doesn't work
I tried with my TFT101G build 9.2.2.3 but didn't work!
OK, so to sum it up:
1. SUID /proc/<pid>/mem write has been patched in this release (aka 9.2.2.3) therefore mempodroid exploit and basing on it viperMod is useless
2. qEmu vulnerability in /data/local.prop is also patched up so TPsparkyroot will also fail.
3. The location of backed up files and temp storage have been shifted out from data therefore all rooting tools connected with ASUS backup app will not do the trick.
4. Jumping back to previous software is unachievable without root.
So I ask you to post ONLY methods that are not listed above.
(However I think that we have to wait for next linux Local Privilage Escalation bug to be discovered in order to get rooted)
Cheers
P.S. Sorry for any mistakes English is not my native.

OTA is only for TF101G. You can install firmware pack from ASUS website through custom recovery, but I do not see any point of doing that.

If you can write to arbitrary locations on /data try dropping a /data/local.prop with 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' inside (without quotes), reboot and then issue "id" through adb shell to check if adb is running as root.
If it works, ViperMod can be adapted almost painlessly to push su, Superuser.apk and busybox with the correct permission bits

If you can write to arbitrary locations on /data try dropping a /data/local.prop with 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' inside (without quotes), reboot and then issue "id" through adb shell to check if adb is running as root.

Unfortunately I've tried that and than I came to a conclusion that 'ro.kernel.qemu=' has been shifted... Try read build.prop on /system and you will find it there, so /data write does nothing for now
EDIT:
Nonetheless, I have rw access to /cache where dlpkgfile is held, so maybe it is possible to do a downgrade of firmware through that hole.
EDIT2:
BTW, I did it by flashing TW 9.2.2.3 firmware on to WW 9.2.2.3 through EP101_SDUPDATE (or similar).
Than:
adb mv /data/local/tmp /data/local/tmp.bak
adb shell ln -s /cache /data/local/tmp
adb rebbot
After that /data becomes readwrite
EDIT3:
There is also one more question: where is held /tmp partition needed to repack the blob maybe by accessing it and pushing blob we can manually force its update.

DROID RAZR HD Utility 1.20 [Windows/Mac/Linux]

MOVED/UPDATED for 1.21. Thread saved/closed for any help/assistance/value left in it.
Thanks for posting the updated utility.
Number 4 explained mentions TWRP again instead of CWM though.

Nice work Matt
Will this work on the latest OTA 9.16.6? I know the previous version did not and I have been waiting to root my phone. If yes, do I simply do options 6, then 5, and my choice of either 3/4?

Yes it will work. The unlock requires root so use Motochopper first to root

I'm so glad I found the original Droid Razr HD Utility. I almost downloaded a rip off utility copied from you by a guy named after an illness that people "shake" from. Begins with a P if you know who I mean.
I love my Razr HD. iPhone 5 and S3 didn't work out for me. Poor WiFi performance. I like the idea of a TWRP so I can make a full backup to my SD card.
Matt,
First, let me say thanks for all your amazing work developing this phone and for the two utilites (I am very grateful for 1.10 and looking forward to using 1.20).
Before I jump into the utility, I want to (as briefly as possible) explain my situation (and now looking back, ask a ton of questions): I have 4.1.1, rooted, and have performed the Wireless Hotspot hack procedure. I am unable to take the 4.1.2 update (most likely due to my hacking of the hotspot app, though I may have done something else that I don't remember). Will I be able to use this utility to upgrade to 4.1.2? And unlock my bootloader? And keep (or re-do) my hotspot hack? What is the correct order for me? I'm thinking since I am rooted, I unlock the bootloader, then install 4.1.2, correct? Does this keep my root intact, or do I need to use VooDoo OTA Rootkeeper to unroot prior to performing the 4.1.2 update in the utility, then re-root?
Finally, is there a way to copy and save my currently installed apps (and pics, etc) so I don't have to re-install them all? Is this the function of Titanium Backup, or is there a different/easier way to do it?
Thanks again!

Unlock your bootloader before you try to do anything, it's the best safeguard to have.
You can go to 4.1.2 with it from 4.1.1 yes.
This is not a rootkeeping utility. If you unlock you can always flash a root.zip like Superuser.zip, SuperSu.zip, etc. in CWM or TWRP to root. You don't need Voodoo anymore.
Backups is up to you. Titanium Works AFAIK.
I think I got all the questions hidden in that blob of text, hopefully
Thanks Matt!
- I've unlocked the bootloader this morning and it worked perfectly (have to find the program in the forum to change the "bootloader unlocked" startup screen now, but I digress).
- After installing 4.1.2 I can always re-root using the utility I'm guessing, yes?
- Will the utility install 4.1.2 and replace a "modified" 4.1.1, or do I have to have a "stock" 4.1.1 ROM for the 4.1.2 to work? By "modified" I mean deleted apps, reconfigured SQLite Edited hotspot app, etc... I only ask since I cannot get the 4.1.2 OTA to install as my phone is currently, and was wondering if it was known if I would run into the same problem using the Utility 1.20. Or if this is the reason for the creation of the Utility 1.20...
- If I have to be stock and the 4.1.2 won't work as my phone is currently, I am thinking I could use the Utility 1.10 to go back to 4.0.4, then up to stock 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 from there (or straight to 4.1.2 from 4.0.4 if possible), then re-delete and re-hack the apps I want to delete and hack (if that all makes sense).
Another blob of text, hopefully broken down a little bit better for you

I don't understand why you don't just go directly to 4.1.2 using this

Hi Matt,
Ok, so I attempted using the utility to run options 1 and 2. No dice. Option 1 looked like the below attachment. Ran in AP Fastboot, USB debugging enabled. Tried twice, once rooted, once not, same outcome. Any ideas what's wrong?
Thanks!
Use different USB cable and non-3.0 port.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Tried a few different cables, few different ports on the computer, still no dice. I guess I am destined to have 4.1.1 forever
PS - thanks erj-drvr for the bootloader screen changing url!
Im on 4.1.1 everything working fine I just want to get to 4.1.2 is this the best way to do it or is there an easier way? I am unlocked and rooted if I use the utility it will put me on 4.1.2 still unlocked I will have to get a recovery and root correct? It wont unlock me?
I selected option 5 and tried to do the Motochopper root exploit. Though the exploit in the console showed as successful, when I rebooted and run Root Checker Pro, I see the issues below.
I was on 4.1.1 w/ root, got 4.1.2, which broke root. Per the above, Motochopper showed as working, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any suggestions?

Assuming I am BL unlocked, rooted and on 4.1.2 with CWM installed after using the utility, can I then just flash the latest CM 10.1 nightly?
Can I safely remove Safestrap now and just use CWM instead? Thanks.

Tried many times, unable to get past the mounting of /system. Hard lock-up.
Edit: Had root on 7.0 finally. Looked like I was using the wrong sboot. I have too many...
Note: Tried to update superSU after I had everything how I wanted it. Lost root. Had to start over. Use caution...
I have gotten my phone rooted thanks for your help.
Now we need to find a way to bypass the system rw,remount freeze, which I think is being controlled by smu_protection or something like that.

I think you phone now is rooted and you can mount system as rw just start adb
write adb shell then write su it will ask to get root from your device and then retry if doesn't work with download any explorer app like root explorer and you can edit system from it

Tried it on both, including
Code:
mount -o rw,remount /system
Freezing up
Especially with Amaze. Tried to write on the system partition and it hangs until I do a fresh reboot.
Has anyone tried if Samsung pay still works after root?
Ok, I'm in this nougat rom now, but the writable system still as a dream for us. I'll go back to the stock and enjoy of my Samsung apps instead of freezing my phone. Has someone knowledge about change the imei of this device? I want root for this. Or, if you know how to reboot the lollipop rooted rom correctly, can you explain me how?

Unsure if it "works" or not, as I never use it. However... It is bothering me to add my VISA-XXXX to Android Pay after boot. I'd say fairly good chance it does, simply because this root has thus far not touched /system for most of us. I do believe that is the red flag for SafetyNet/Pay (but I dunno. It does ask me however...)
