Im trying to recalibrate my batter because of terrible battery life. After letting it die and charging it while its on I had no issues getting it to 100%. I powered down the phone to charge it while it was off and it seems like its hanging at the last percent and wont go to 100. I have had it plugged in for a few hours now and its still showing the same charge but wont fill up the last little bit of the meter. Anyone have any ideas? Im really thinking about tossing the battery and getting a new one. It seems like i got a bad one. no matter what I do i can only get about 12 hours of light use. I work 10-12 hour days so I have to constantly worry about my phone dying everyday I work.
I had the same issues. Tried every battery trick I found on the forums, but nothing worked. I went to ATT, they sent me a new battery and it everything's good now
So try talking to ATT and getting a stock OEM battery before you buy one
I picked this up and it gives a lot of peace of mind: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004206TQ8/ref=oss_product
Dngen. Are you getting greater battery life now that your using a different battery? I'm convinced the first batch of batteries and phones were bad.

At first I thought it was the phones that vary in battery life.
My first captivate had really good battery life. But it bricked after I tried to do the JH7 update. So I got the phone exchanged, but they used my original battery in the new captivate. For some reason my phone was draining really fast compared to my old captivate, and this was weird because both used the same battery.
This was really annoying me cause I loved this phone, but the poor battery life was ruining it for me. So I went to an AT&T store and told them how bad my battery life was. They shipped an OEM battery for free and I've found a new battery to significantly work better than the old one
Hmmm. I just got a replacement phone and everything works better...GPS ect... but the battery was the same as it is now.....10-12 hours. I've been thinking about getting another battery but I don't know if that will fix the problem. I guess I will try to anyway.

How long have you had your replacement phone? I know my battery life got better after a few days with my original captivate
I got my replacement phone about a week ago...I've been trying to drain and charge to make sure the system is getting a good read....I've had the battery since launch...the only time I got great battery life was when I used unhelpfuls undervolting and the first time I flashed jh7. I have only flashed one rom on my new phone. It just bothers me that it drains 5-6% an hour in idle. I don't have any Widgets and the only thing that is updating is email once an hour

I think I might have caught a break....on my fourth day of charging and draining and I'm at 16 hrs with. 27% left. I guess ill continue with the whole charge and drain thing for the next couple of days.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I somehow doubled my battery life. After draining and charging the last few days I managed to go from 12 hrs to 24 hrs of battery life while using it the same amount as before. I have had had my phone since launch and battery life sucked. I don't know it its because I got a refurbished phone that did it or what. I flashed my old phone almost every day for awhile. Even when I didn't flash I couldn't get it to last.

Have you guys seen this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806211
Good stuff, thanks
I've seen it and read most of the battery threads out there. I've come to the conclusion that: 1. There's a bad batch of phones out there that cause battery drain issues or 2. Since most of us ATT android users are new were unaware of the proper procedure to flash roms. I believe the second to be more true since most of the batterry drain issues happen due to flashing new roms according to most of the threads I've read. I would like to see the percentage of people out there who are still running there cappys stock with never Modding or flashing to see what type of battery life they are getting.

Before rooting, sideloading and flashing unhelpful kernel I was getting the same battery life, 10-15 hours depending on use. The only thing unhelpful seemed to help with was my idle usage, about 1%/hour. I still need to tinker with the kernel and try wiping my bat stats. My phone reports the battery is at 5% but when I shut it off and plug it in it's more like 30% lol
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I had the same issue. Charge until full. Turn off and charge full... turn on and repeat. Erase battery stats via CW. The key is to let it die. Do not charge your battery until it dies....once it died I plugged it in and turned it on. If its at 1% then just let it charge completely. If its at 30% then you need to unplug and let it die again. Keep doing this until its at 1% when u plug it in. If you have to do the latter you have to start the process over again and erase stats and drain and fill the batterry. From here on out anytime you flash a rom make sure your phone is at 100%. Always let the phone die before charginging it the first time. I think the android system has to get a read of the batterry.
I think at some point along the way I charged my phone when it was at 30% after a flash so anytime after when my battery was dying I still really had 30% battery left but android was telling me my phone had no juice.. let me know if this works for you....

As someone who was looking to extend battery life, I downloaded "Battery Widget". After 9 hours off the charger and maybe 2 1/2 hours with the display on, I looked to see what was using up the battery the most. Everything from the OS to web to Wi-Fi was at no more than 2% but the display was at 95%. I know its a huge display and its going to use a lot of battery but is this much normal? The battery was dead in about 10 hours.
Sounds like you have the brightness up on it, I would turn it down a little if you have not done so already. Mine is on about a quarter brightness and it is only 79% and the battery lasts the entire day.
Are you on stock ROM? If so, you may want to consider flashing a custom ROM. When I flashed Infused ROM, my battery life significantly improved. And I am not exaggerating... I would drop 100 > 90% in about 5 hours before, now I can easily go 9-10 hours from 100 > 90% with light use.
Regarding display, please see this thread which may help with that:

My screen was on 100%. I changed it to 50%. Hopefully I will see a difference.
I am on stock ROM, however, I've been looking alot into Infused. This is my first android phone and I'm a little weary of custom ROMs being buggy. But of course those fears are pretty much unfounded since I've never seen a phone with a custom ROM in use.
BTW, thank you guys, or gals, for such quick responses.

I understand your concerns and if you are not comfortable, do not do it. However, I can say that the Infused ROM works much better for me than the stock ROM and I highly recommend it. It is much faster and better on battery. I can tell you that the version of Infused ROM I am on is not buggy and much better than stock. Cannot say anything about the latest version since I decided to stay on a previous version because I am so happy with it.
with your brightness up to 100%, i'm not surprised your display eats so much battery.
i'm still on stock and i used to run my display at 50% all the time. then i turned it down to 0% and i still have no issues seeing the screen in any kind of light, even outside. i only turn the brightness up to 50% when i'm playing a game or watching a video.
try 0%, you'd be surprised!
I have the nexus S and the Infuse. You're right, for some reason the Infuse Display percentage is WAYYY high!! My brightness is usually at 50%. But the Display is the cause of 90% of my battery drainage. It's very weird.
Okay so an update.... I've had my screen on 0% for the past couple days and I installed infused a couple of days ago as well. I haven't seen any kind of improvment. ( display is still in the 85%-90% range of battery usage.) Is it possible I just have a defective phone? I love this phone and but im really frustrated with havung to keep an eye on how much juice I have left

No I'm not watching videos. Just using the web, words with friends, messaging, and messing around with the home screen.
A little more info...... last night I unplugged my phone from the charger at 4 am with 100% charge. When I woke at 8:30 am it had 97% charge and said the display was causing 37% of the drainage( I hadn't touched it since 4:00 am). At 8:40 I started playing around on XDA app and, starting at 97%, after twenty five minutes I'm now down to 88% battery with the display causing 80% of the drainage.

It is all a matter of how much you are using your phone and how long the screen is on for. It is not unusual for the screen to eat up 75% or more of your battery power if you are contastly turning the screen on or viewing things on it.
My display is sitting at around 80% right now, and on my old Nexus One, it was usually around 78%.
I don't take personal calls while at work, so almost all of what I do with my phone while at work keeps the display on constantly. I do text and check websites that are blocked at work as well as conduct all personal or financial business using my phone.
Things like calls turn the display off and other things like streaming or playing music will let the display time out and keep working.
The things you are doing are not processor intensive, wifi intensive, radio intensive, but do work the screen.

No I'm not using live wall paper. I understand that the display is going to use a lot of battery. I guess what I'm asking is it normal for the battery to go down 10% points while looking at Xda forums for twenty minutes. If its normal ill deal with it but if its not I can still take it back and replace it. And thank you all for taking an interest in this thread.

Actually my experience is that the XDA app has some sort of memory leak. It takes a long time to load for me and crashes about 20% of the time for me. I use the browser most the time, and find it is very well optimized for smartphones.
And yes, your battery use is fairly normal if you aren't gaming, phone calling or downloading. In fact my use is at 87% for the screen. But still, I have 70% battery left and only an hour more of work.
I am not sure if I can explain this properly. I am not a word person.
What you see is a rolling average. If you were to not use the phone at all. Let it sit completely idle without firing on the display. You would see that the display is using a low to zero percentage (of course you could not, in fact, see that). You would find that wifi or 3g or android system (or some other task) are at 95% more or less.
The display being the most power consuming component on the device will make a dramatice change to these percentages the moment your fire it. Turning on the display simply to check the battery stats will have run the display's battery percent far higher than the others quicker than you can probably even get to the screen to check the stats.
Keep in mind this is a rolling average. It does not indicate fault or that the display is CONSTANTLY drawing 95% of the battery. It is just using 90% more of the the battery than something at 5% when it is in use.
One should chalk this up to completely normal. Make a poll if you want. You are likely to find near 100% of respondents will reply that display is highest in their stats (unless they have some kind of accessory or something that draws more power)
Nexus S = TFT LCD
Infuse = SAMOLED
To reduce battery drain from screen...use more blacks. Black on SAMOLED screens are actually pixels turned off...while TFT LCD and retina displays jave a pixel displaying black.
Hope this helps put more into perspective.

well, in his defense there is a SLCD version of it somewhere in europe/asia.
There are a lot of battery threads out there, but i wanted to try something new. I want to see how much our phones drain in real world situations. So here are the rules:
1. Use your phone normally for ten minutes.
2. Note your battery percent at the beginning and then at the end.
3. Post details about what you did, what ROM you're using, and the percent battery drain.
Hopefully we can compare our experiences and learn something.
I used my phone to surf a few websites, send one text, and use xda app. Started at 80% and ended at 77%. Using rcmix3d at 50% brightness.
I know there are tons of factors that affect battery drain, and I'm not trying to be scientific. I'm just curious how we all compare!

The only way you will get a decent idea is to test with others in your area as it will depend alot in signal strength. I would use more battery if I was bouncing between signals instead of having a steady connection.

Screen-on time is the only thing I ever look at. I've only managed to squeeze about 5h45m, out the sense-based gb ROM I've been using.
The phone does really well in standby on most if not all roms that have been flashed properly, don't have non-rom-related battery hogging app issues, and, as zelendel mentioned, signal issues.
It's this big fat screen that's obviously the biggest battery sucker.

I've gotten accustomed to putting my phone on the charger before bed as well. Mine pretty much will last the entire day... Off charger at ~8-9am, back on it at ~12am.
Averaging about 5 hrs screen on time with usually no voice calls of significant length, WiFi on, gps off, relatively stable signal.
I'm running Inspired Ace 1.0.1, and the 04.11_M2 radio. Seems I was getting a little better with the OTA radio, but signal fluctuated a lot more on that one, than with the 04.11_M2.
Edit: doesn't really use your testing procedure, just more of a general feeling, as there's so many other contributing factors...

Holly crap that's a heavy drain. I couldn't possibly use this phone with that type.of battery drain. Thanks to our great dews I managed a little over 7h screen on time. Could only accomplish that by reducing the screen brightness and UC to 768mhz. Stick speed and auto brightness I get about 6-6 1/2 screen on.

You probably got a bad flash, or have something else running, as I mentioned in your recent thread.
Did you full wipe prior to flashing?
Try out gingerbeast, if you still have battery issues with that, after properly wiping prior to flashing of course, then it's hardware, as that ROM has produced some record-breaking battery life performance.
Mine has twice decided to randomly have days where it just drains like crazy. The battery is a lot warmer and just dies out in like 6 hours with very minimal usage. the majority of the time my battery is great but the last 2 days and then about a month ago it did this. No reason for it either, I have made no changes on my device.
Anybody seen this?

Yeah I did a full wipe before flashing. I'll be sure and try that out tomorrow, I really hope it helps. If the issue is hardware, should I contact HTC? After I believe you said my phone should still be under warranty, I called them, and indeed it is. The rep I had before must have been new or something. Thanks
From a full charge, on TPGB with wifi, gps, and sync on, and everything refreshed 3-4hrs, I lasted about 8 hours. I was using super accurate gps for 20 minute intervals or so, but it lasted the day I'd say. Some occasional web browsing.
Lucky for me my head unit on my car has a usb port. For this whole trip I left it off though.

Same, my i727r battery life is horrible since i flashed ICS.
I have noticed that my android system is pulling a lot of juice compared to GB. I made some changes today like freeze all the bloat + installed UCLC4 modem. And wiped battery stats + complete drain and discharge of the battery. Lets see if it get better after a few cycles.
My battery seems a lot better! Way way way better. 25 minutes of web and its still full!

Battery has been much better for me with ICS.
Freezing tons of bloat helps..
My battery life has been horrible on ICS but when I look at the battery thing, Face Unlock used 35% of my batter (when my batter was 5% left) o-o it takes THAT much?
My battery life is absolutely amazing with ICS.
I have the stock rom debloated completely, and a lot of junk is disabled. Coupled with turning off auto brightness and leaving data off when i don't use it, the battery just chugs along.
This morning I got in my car at 7 AM, started playing music full blast through the stereo for an hour. Got to class, played some temple run, approximately a half hour worth. 30 texts or so, one 1 minute phone call. (data was off the entire time, it keeps facebook from butting in from behind) My battery has literally only gone down 10%, and it's 1 PM
I'm in love.
Seems fine here, I usually have it plugged in but today am testing it without. The couple charge blips are from when I had to get some files off of it.
I froze a bunch of the AT&T bloatware, have had Wi-fi, BT, GPS enabled the entire time. Moderate/light use... I've attached some screens.
I'm running http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567817 with the flashable ICS modem.
My battery has been horrible but it's only been a day for me and my signal has been fluctuating a lot on day one. It's stabilized now so we'll see after a few days of use. But right now it is horrible.
It seems mine is doing worse.
But I have been adding a lot of stuff since this is my first time rooting.
I am about to get a battery depleted(at 12% right now) and reset the battery statistics and install the OEM battery.

I thought there was a lot of debating over deleting the battery stats, i remember an article from a google programmer saying that it actually decreases battery performance...i personally stopped doing it a year ago and noticed a better batter experience, most of the time bad battery comes from a bad flash or apps that run in the backround and use location services
My battery life was horrible with ICS so im back to GB. At work with phone in pocket for 2hrs and was already down to 75% off killing battery and charging it fully next day. When I got home after 8hrs of work already at 50% and thats when its in sleep mode. Using it I would drain 1% every couple minutes definitly bloat. Might try new debloated ones but kinda skeptical since GB gives me amazing battery life.

Well condiering I have never reset them and did this first and only flash of the ICS leak, I'm hoping it helps out. We'll see what happens.
I have Juicedefender turning everything off while sleeping(set widgetlocker to deinied so when locked, widget locker stays active to be ready, and juicedefender see's that and turns off data)
On my 2100mAh nexus battery I barely got over a day(was getting 36-40 hours on GB)
Either way, I have two batteries so I'll deal with it until either an official ICS release or a new rom with better battery performance comes around.
I also have the nexus battery. Def have less battery life with this version of ics .
It could be the algorithm the use. At the start of the day is slowly draws down. As the day goes on it seems to drain faster

Actually, I have been having the Best battery life to date. I will post my list of APK's that I removed. I don't do FB or anything like that, so not sure if that is affecting it. Also, in a non LTE area. on the UCLA3 kernel, I was absolutely getting horrid battery life.
I live in an LTE area and I am getting almost a full day of use. Never got that with GB. I keep wanting to charge it, but I dont have to.
I do have Juice Defender running though, and it disables my data in 15 or 30 min intervals when the screen is locked. And I have SetCPU which limits the CPU to a max of 384 when the screen is locked.

Battery discharge isn't a linear function my friend.

Hello, I'm currently running cm 9, however the battery life is just awful
When the phone is on sleep it loses like 1 percent every 5-10 minutes
I am using an extended battery as well, please tell me what to do I was on GB before and the battery was outstanding, I could go on one charge the whole day with heavy usage, now i dont think I can make it through the day with light usage on this
thank you
EDIT: This could be a sleep problem, because when the device is on, the battery is normal
If you flashed the Feb 27 cm9 you should flash proton kernel so you can watch videos. Battery life isn't as good as gb no matter what you do. Also give it some time to settle in. It takes more than a couple hours.
alright thank you... I just flashed the newest version of cm9 a few hours ago, I was flashing a bunch of roms and this one seemed the best... do you know how to force a device into deep sleep cause that seems to be the problem i believe
OK I was just on 20 percent, then i rebooted my phone, and now im on 2 percent... im seriously considering going back to gb
Sounds more like a battery thing? With CM9.? + Proton I'm getting at least a day* with light use. Maybe a bad app or combo of apps? What does BBS say is eating the charge?
* - I say at least a day because I can't not use it for that long.

just the screen and the android system... very interesting thing though is happening
I'm running a bunch of quadrants to get the battery down to 0, and the battery is all the way down to 1%, however it's been on 1% for like 6 quadrant tests... maybe its just a problem with the indicator, however another indicator also says it's at 1%... very interesting
If you are on CM9, I suggest you flash Hefe or Proton.
I use Hefe because according to the posts being made it puts your phone into deep sleep, which means longer battery life.

Definitely a battery problem. This happens to me on one of my batteries but not on another. Time to buy a new one. I haven't tested it fully but it does appear to be just a display issue. Sometimes the bad battery will make the phone display 1% but it will still act as if it had way more than 1% charge left. I haven't done any testing on that regard but that's what it appears to do.

I don't believe it to be a battery problem, because I've been on GB with absolutely no problems and exceptional battery... I just upgraded to ics not long ago, and the battery life instantly screwed up
Have you set the cpu governor to anything silly like performance?
Have you let it charge up fully at least once?
Search xda for "better battery stats" app, use it to see if you're getting deep sleep.
Flash hefe over release 8 and youll have a little better battery. Proton doesnt deep sleep

Proton DOES deep sleep. That was one of its major features.
Certain scheduler/governor combinations work better on different kernels, though. If the specific one you like most sleeps better on Hefe, great. If the one you like does best on Proton, great. Just be aware that most issues are either physical or user-inflicted...
In this case, your battery is almost certainly dying. The variance in power over a reboot is a definite tell that your battery is probably swollen. If you can spin it on a table, the cells are starting to die. This does not mean you can't keep using it, but it does mean that your battery life will be irregular. It also means that you'll have significantly "higher" battery levels if you reboot the phone with external power connected, but the battery will discharge very quickly if it hasn't actually reached whatever level it believes it should be at.
