Anyone know the differences between these two chips? The iPhone 5 seems to be getting far higher download speeds for me, and was wondering if there is some type of improvement in its chip over my GS3s.

I'd venture to guess that's due to our much larger screen real estate.

Has that actually been proven? I was thinking all the numbers that Apple were claiming were probably off by a few hours plus on GSM networks to boot.
The iPhone also has a much smaller battery then the S3.
The iphone does NOT get more usage time than the GSIII.
The attached is directly from the Verizon website.
As far as the OP's question, I think it's just they have a better radio/antennae than the SIII.

I ran the speedtest.net app on an iPhone 5 at the Verizon store, and on my S3 right next to each other. Running the test 5 times, the S3 had higher download and upload speeds each time, by about 1-2 mbps.

yes it was proven, and the reason behind that is because the iPhone uses a single chip for voice and data, unlike other LTE CDMA phones which use separate chips
Gs3 has 3 antennas to handle voice and data over 3g and 4g. IPhone 5 only has the 2 and currently cannot do both. Lte has the capability to allow for both..... just not yet. It has not evolved to that point. The iPhone 5 handoff between 3g to 4g and no data is pretty snappy though. I ran a few test against my wife's iPhone

Battery life on iphone 5 will likely destroy the GS3. These oled screens torch batteries.
Even the ATT HTC OneX, with same hardware (mostly) and a SMALLER battery destroys the SGS3 in battery life.
With apple's optimized software and smaller LCD display, it will likely kill the SGS3 in use time. I'd venture it'll be easily double or triple the life of sgs3 in browsing time.

Read the reviews, that has not been the case at all, the S3 has a battery life advantage over the iPhone 5 in every area.. A pretty good one, add the fact that you can't swap an iPhone 5s batteries and it's a huge advantage to the s3..My S3 even gets better battery life than my fiance iPhone 4...And it's better than the 4s..By a noticeable margin.

Well, you like bombast.
Have any references? I ask, because everything I've read seems to indicate that the One-X battery usage is - on average - not any better than the Galaxy S III. I'm curious how the HTC phone "destroys" my phone's battery life in a comparison, considering that I often forget to turn my phone off at the end of the evening and wake up to find I've still plenty of juice left before hearing the warning signal later the next day after additional phone usage.

I'm not in love with devices, I own a ton of them. Just venture into the att hox XDA forums and you'll find plenty of 1.5 day+ bitterly life screenshots with over 5 and sometimes 6 hours of screen on time. I own both devices, have run every ROM under the sun, its a fact. Ask scrossler who creates clean ROM where the longevity is at. Its not even comparable.
Over here in the sgs forums, people are quite happy with 15ish hours of battery with 3-4 hours of screen time. Guys in the hox forum would be furious with those stats. "Do I have a defective device"?
Anyways, sgs3 is a great device. But let's not start comparing battery life to hox, let alone the iPhone 5. Its not even comparable.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Let's not compare a GSM phone to an CDMA phone. We already know GSM devices get better battery.
I'm not bothering to read any reviews so take that into consideration when I ask this: How in HELL could Samsung get away with touting a little under twice the battery life than the iPhone5 if it destroys the SIII??? They wouldn't get away with it if it weren't at least semi true, Apple would have yet another lawsuit brewing for that.
Edit: not only that, but all SIII users would have to be compensated to a degree for the false advertising I would think. And Sammy isn't going to put themselves into that position.

And yet, what you offered above for GSM AT&T One-X performance parallels what I already described either of our CDMA Galaxy S IIIs tend to get and HAVE gotten as recently as a on a challenging holiday usage schedule.
I've often read One-X owners getting 3-4 hours of screen time and often less, as well - you know, variability does exist among phones that different users configure for their own needs. One-X certainly can get great battery times, though to compare best perhaps the Galaxy S III owners should cripple their multitasking options to match . . .
I am still continually amazed at the battery life in this phone and remark about it openly to my annoyed spouse at times. We never worry about our batteries during a given day out and only recharge at the end of the day or briefly during our short car rides.
The only drain on battery lately has been a seemingly rogue holiday live wallpaper that appears to have been removed from the Play store for good reasons.

Look, everyone's battery life will vary with usage. I'm pretty sure it will be different with everyone. Some people will get better battery life with thr iPhone and then some will get better battery life with the GS3. No reason to get into a major argument over this.

i couldnt find the post but someone posted a pic of the battery in an iphone its huge so that explains that one. as well as android doing a lot more in the background.
camera wise i dont know. i think the shots on the g2x are pretty good. but megapixels definatley aren't what make good pics my droid has a 5 megapixel cam and the pics are awful except in perfect lighting .
the people i work with that have iphones only complaint about their iphones is the battery life. funny .
there are rumors of iphone coming to tmobile anyways, so you may have the option either way.
i would like to see an android phone with the size of battery the iphone has and see how it does.
Your getting shifty battery life because you chose a dual core phone that is unable to shut off one of its cores. Also there is a lot more going on with Android. You have real time information along with syncing services for your push email, contacts, calendar and pictures. Its also hit or miss with the G2X. Some have decent battery life and others have ****ty. Mine is pretty good as it lasts about 15 hours with moderate use. I now use the Sensation for my main phone and it trumps the battery life on the G2X by hours. A couple days ago I removed it from the charger and didnt use it for 3 hours. After 3 hours of idling, my battery was sitting at 99% and that's with nothing turned off. During that period I was still receiving emails and my weather service was syncing. The reason why the standby is so good on the Sensation is because its able to turn off a core and scale lower than any processor to date. Once Ice Cream Sandwich cones out, all of them will be able to do that.
Bottom line: Android has a lot more going on than the iPhone which in mg opinion is just a smart phone for dummys.
One more thing: If you want to see cameras better than the iPhones, head over to the GSII or Sensation forum and take a look at the picture threads.

Its the nature of the beast. Its much easier to create apps for 2 phones and the same software than it is for 50 phones and 20 different software variants. Its getting better by the day and once the next big update comes (ICS), it should make it alot more easier for the devolopers to create apps.

You will most definitely be getting ripped off. Once the update comes, the value of the G2x will be high again and it will be two times the beast it already is; on the other hand with the speculation of the iPhone 5 coming this fall, getting an iPhone 4 right now seems downright stupid...

You know, battery life has been kinda awesome for me, which I know is a total anomaly.
The phone has been on for 16 hours, it has about 2 hours of "display on" time, with about 1.5 hours of web surfing, 0.5 hours of gaming, and 10 mins of GPS navigation. I'm still at 35%. Sync is always left on, same with 3G, unless I'm connected to wifi.
All of this was possible after the latest CM7 nightlies and faux's underclocked kernels.
On my old Nexus 1, I would be at around 30% at the end of the day with less than an hour's worth of display on time.
Give the guy some credit lol, he did leave apple for google welcome to the android family. Just remember, no matter what you think is wrong with your android powered phone it will still always be better than any iphone

Thats our crappy carriers fault!! Damn you AT&T!!!
This phones a beast, I love it.
When I look at an iphone4, I see a childs toy. The colors look so bland and the screen looks so small lol. This phone has spoiled me!
It is the best phone for the money if you want LTE. The best phone I've ever owned for a few weeks was the SGH-i777 but it didn't have LTE. The only drawback.
Skyrocket is $150. Added to the AT&T family plan, it only costs ~$32.50 a month for standard plan and 2 gigs of data.
Since no one in my family has Verizon, Verizon plans cost me $90 a month, plus an additional ~$15 of Verizon mystery tax. I would say Verizon LTE is better though, but it is unbearably expensive. And I don't even like the Galaxy Nexus anyway. No microSDHC slot, very limited video codec support. I don't really care about the camera so much. But I watch a lot of video on this thing. Galaxy Nexus is not the best device for hassle-free watch anything you can download from the web device.
It probably depends on your priorities. But, at the moment, if I had to get a phone all over again, I'd probably still choose the SR.
The only thing this thing seems to be missing is an HD screen. But, I suspect (aka, guessing) b/c of the lower res, it gets better battery life.. which is more important to me.
If data wasn't an issue, I'd slightly prefer the i777 for the size (and it seemed slightly more consistent in the month I had it).
I love my Skyrocket, but I don't think there is a "best phone." One has to choose their phone based on what they want. I for one wanted a huge beautiful screen and ridiculously fast speeds, so I am happy with my choice.

I noticed you said you had a RAZR. Any feedback on why you didn't like the phone? I'm currently trying to decide between an i727 and a RAZR, and the RAZR is $100 less than the i727 right now. Plus the RAZR seems more durable and "shouldn't" need a case to add bulk to it.

Have played with a friends RAZR extensively...its a great device, but not one I would buy. Main reasons - the device feels really wide because of the bezels and the screen suffers from a sickly green tinge when not viewed from straight on. The display is also pentile which made text appear more jagged on the SR's samoled plus. With that said, build quality is awesome and love the splash proof coating. Somehow, beer always ends up getting spilled on my phone...

NFC that you can used is strictly dictated by ATT, as the Rogerrs version has a fully functional NFC. The only thing the nexus has better than could influence a decision is the HD screen + ICS (for now). NOTHING else is a + for the nexus as the simple fact it doesnt have an SD slot is a MAJOR turnoff. Besides, the HD skyrocket is coming, if youre patient, you can have the best android phone on market. I had a nexus for 2 days, exchanged my skyrocket for a nexus and the nexus is laggier (maybe because of the 1.2ghz cpu), the the camera difference is considerable, the boot time is longer, no SD, it does have a better battery life but that can be solved with a 2250mah andida battery, and other than ICS improvements, it has nothing more.
Get skyrocket HD, no other phone on the market will be better (for now)

The power and volume buttons on the Nexus are actually poorly placed IMHO. They sit fairly proud and are right where I grip the phone. This forces me to have a lighter grip than I would like when talking. A case might fix this, but I am only borrowing it, so I won't be trying one.

This question is only for people who had the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and who had call/signal issues.
I have the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and it drops calls and has plenty of signal issues. I've talked to others with the phone who have the same issue. There are plenty of people who say they don't have issues but I make about 3000 minutes of calls each month and the people who say they don't have issues so this really isn't meant for them.
I'd like to know if you experience more or less call issues than you had with the Galaxy Nexus please.
I had the nexus. I have much better 4G service and data overall seems better. I live in St. Petersburg and work in tampa. I would often drop my calls going over the bridge on my nexus. I have not had that problem since I got my gs3.

I never had signal problems with dropping calls, just the strength of signal was bad.
This problem is nonexistent on this phone. Which is another reason the battery life is tremendously better.

Good to know, thanks.
SG3 reception, data and phone signal is much much better thwn Gnex.
The greatest advantage the S3 has over the Nexus is superior battery life. I'm also noticing that I get much better 4G signal on my S3

My S3 get much better reception. The 4g reception is better too. I haven't had any problems.

I wish I'd left a section on battery life. I'm curious what percent average difference is e.g. 10% better battery life.
Should be getting my siii this week....keeping my gnex however
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
i have both. Battery is better on the GS3 but I don't have exact percentages. I can easily get through the day with the GS3 and have plenty to spare. The Gnex can just barely make it through a similar day.
the Nexus works much better if u switch to CDMA only, for me it did anyway. But then you have no 4g. With the S3 I've never had those problems I've had with the Nexus. So don't hold back on the S3 with that worry, you should have 0 problems
I'd say go for it, the specs make it future proof and its a great phone.
I've had a galaxy nexus, a couple of them but I didn't switch to the S3 from one, but with my experiences with both devices. Nexus, great phone software wise, hated the look and feel, but was quick, bad battery life, and bad reception. Now the S3 on the other hand, I love how it feels, how light it is, the color, the screen and size of it, you can flash and all the good stuff with this phone, just not as much development on this phone... yet. But I would definitely consider this phone as it is an upgrade to the nexus, in my opinion. But it's up to you. If you like flashing and updates quicker, keep the nexus. If you want something better hardware was, get the S3. It all boils down to what you want. Hope I helped in some possible way.

I have had two GNexus'. Experienced the one way audio problem with both. Flashed Jelly Bean and didn't solve the problem. Seems to be regional/radio tower/hardware problem. The GNex uses the VIA chipset - same as Droid Charge that had the same one way audio problem. No satisfaction from Verizon. GS3 uses Qualcom broadband chipset.
Now have the GS3 and have not had any problems - very fast phone. Satisfied with ICS and don't miss JB. Battery life measured over two weeks about 10-15% better than GNex. Have rooted the GS3 for nandroid and Titanium backup. Probably won't unlock the bootloader since I'm currently not interested in flashing ROMs.
Overall, both my wife and I are very satisfied with the GS3s that we have. I have still kept the GNex just in case they ever resolve the audio problem.
I had the GNex. The S3 does not have the same issues I had with the Nexus. I would constantly be loosing 4G, the phone would heat up and my battery would drain ridiculously fast.
The S3 is superior in terms of radio in all ways to the Nexus.
I switched from a Verizon GNex to the Verizon SGS3 . Overall I like the phone a lot better, it is more responsive and gets better reception IMO. However, after flashing ROMs like the current CM10 nightly (which is of course a development release) my reception seems to have gone down a tad. Maybe it is just me but this seems to be the case.
The only thing I hate, although I don't think it is a phone issue, more of a verizon issue, is sometimes the Handshaking between switching 3G to 4G when it is found in the area isn't that great.
At my desk at work, if I notice that I have one bar of 3G and then go into airplane mode for a second, and back to cell service on...... I get 3 or 4 bars of 4G. Verizon needs to do a better job with the switching and "discovering" of 4G. I have had others on different phones confirm this too.
Only thing I'm worried about when I get my gsiii in a couple days is the flashing ROMs leading to imei of 0..... going to take every back up thread possible and apply each backup before I begin flashing.

Hello all,
I currently have a HTC Thunderbolt on an unlimited data plan with Verizon. My phone is getting old, and is having a few problems. The screen has a few scratches on it, the battery life is poor, and I'm noticing that the speed isn't what I used to think it was. Consequently, I am thinking of purchasing a new phone and have given the Samsung Galaxy SIII some thought. I was wondering what you all thought about your phone and if there was anything you specifically disliked about it. I have been weighing my options, but have not made up my mind. Also, are there any other phones that you would suggest for me to investigate?
Thanks!
It's a good phone but I myself and my wife's phone suffer from poor signal reception and poor wifi signal. Not everyone experiences poor signal from what I've read on here and people I have talked to. Personally I'm about to leave Verizon or get another phone that's how bad the s3 signal reception is for me I can't speak for everyone else. If I can't make or receive phone calls or use my data, when where I had my HTC and Motorola devices i would have 2 to 3 bars more signal. I know a lot of people will come in and say that I'm full of crap but I'm just telling you my personal experience

nothing but good things to say here. people complain about the reception, but i nor anyone else i know in person has these issues. ive the same or better service with the S3 versus my MOTO and brothers HTC phone.
does verizon still do 14 day test drives on phones? can see if it effects you or not.
I'm not sure if they do or not. I'm actually on my friend's plan (he added a line to his plan that I pay for) so that I could get the unlimited data option. So, I have to actually find out if I can "upgrade" or not. I was kind of planning on just buying the phone on ebay and then setting it up to use it on the account/network. Can I ask where you guys are located that you are or are not receiving signal?
GS3 on Verizon is a great phone. No signal or wireless radio issues for me. It's a little better than my previous Razr Maxx radio which surprised me.
It's still a beast phone though it's dual core. Don't get too caught up in how many cores the phone has. I've played with both the DNA & Note 2 and I saw tiny bit of lag. Wouldn't think I did with quad core processors and project butter Jelly Bean. I feel it's fluidity, speed, functionality is more about how the software is optimized with the hard ware that's running it.
If the Note 2 isn't too big for your liking, I'd get that but the S3 is still a boss. I think some people who have radio problems may be having defected hardware or something where they live is blocking or affecting the phone's signal.
I'm leaning more towards they received a GS3 with bad hardware, antenna, something of that nature. Samsung has been known to make crappy wireless radios on a couple phones like the Epic Touch (GS2) and I heard Galaxy Nexus had a bad one too.
I don't think the S3 has a bad one though? I good great service on mines. Maybe I live near good towers? But then again even when I go places and I'm not home I get good reception. But like I said maybe Samsung did produce some with poor or defected radios?

The Galaxy Nexus had a terrible 4G radio in the ones I owned, so I can attest to that. GS3 though has been great reception-wise, so it sounds like the reception issues others have seen is most likely hardware-related.
I have a GS3 for work and I really enjoy it. I'd say go for it.
Go with the GS3 dude! U won't regret it. I heard the DNA was locked down so I'd either go with the GS3 or Note 2. If you want something managable when in comes to phisical size, I have the GS3 with an otterbox commuter case and it fits nicely in my pocket and I can easily navigate with one hand, the Note 2 may be a bit more difficult
. The stock software is excellent although I highly reccomend unlocking and rooting. Its a kickass phone no doubt!

The note2 is also locked down...still much better choice than the DNA.
I personally would go with the DNA. I'm getting rid of my S3 for the DNA.
It has no SD slot and you can't remove the battery but I don't need those options.
The DNA is an amazing phone.

I'm coming from a droid x & my GS3 is light years ahead of it!! No reception problems or anything bad to report at all. This baby only has a dual core processor but yet it smokes my Transformer Prime that had a quad processor! So yea cores mean nothing in most cases..found that out the hard way lol. As far as the DNA goes I hear the screen is nice but I also read on another site that the Samsung Galaxy 4 will supposedly be out Feb 2013.. Rocking a 13mp camera,1080p screen & a quad core processor. I was originally going for the note 2 but I'm absolutely loving the GS3...& I'm not even rooted yet lol.
I saw a DNA today at the verizon store. Not really impressed. S4 is going to blown it out the water.

The only issue I have had with the S3 was it would take forever to refresh my widgets when I restarted the phone. After spending some quality time with a Verizon tech who was actually very knowledgeable and helpful, we figured out setting Power Saving to "off" solved the problem. I am now using Clean Rom 4.5 (soon to be 5.0) and I can set Power Saving to "on" without a problem if I want. Weird.
My daughter is having issues with her current phone on Verizon and spoke to a couple Verizon staff on what they would recommend for a reliable phone. They all said Galaxy S3 was their top recommendation. Since they knew they weren't selling her a phone (they told her she should go through support and get a new phone for free given her continuing issues) I think they were being very honest with her.
I'm gonna laugh so hard if the S4 has no SD slot and a non removable battery. I can see them going that route to make the phone thinner and more durable

I came from the Galaxy Nexus and the only issue I had wiht that is battery life which was managable but don't expect to go more than 8-10 hours with it. Even still it was worth it to have a pure google phone. I got the SGS3 only because I got a killer deal on it off contract. So I'm rocking that now. If anything I would say go this way:
Galaxy Nexus (Cheap and Pure Google Experience with Roms)
Galaxy S3 (Great Battery Life all around great phone)
Galaxy Note 2 (If you don't mind the screen and want Quad Core)
Wait for Galaxy S 4 which should be out sometime next year if you can wait.
I haven't had poor reception with my GNex or my S3 so all is good there. Depending on how much money you have either of the above will be great phones.

If they don't then I won't be upset
If they want to make the phone thinner, however, those 2 options are things that would help big time.
If they do get rid of the SD slot, they should be smart enough to offer high internal storage, but you know that Verizon will try and stop them.
Verizon is most likely the reason the DNA doesn't have an SD slot, they want people to use more data to stream and download

Honestly this will probably be my last Samsung product.
The amount of bugs on this phone is inexcusable. On stock ICS TW:
- Can't use aux input with Bluetooth calls. This means if I was listening to music in my car through aux input and I got a Bluetooth call, I'd have to yank out the audio cord in order to hear the caller. Seriously, what the hell. I had this functionality working perfectly on a two year old phone.
- Google Music oddities. Sometimes when changing tracks the music stops playing. Turning on the screen resumes playing though. On the JB leaks this bug manifests in an even worse way and I have my doubts that it will be fixed for OTA.
And this isn't really a bug, but there's no way to disable the volume reduction upon plugging in an aux cable and that makes me sad.
So the answer lies in AOSP... thank god for our African Canadian sock monkey friend for leaking our unlocked bootloader... only...
- IMEI loss. Seriously Samsung? This is a huge oversight and is NOT the first time a bug like this has escaped their QA testing. Samsung products have been riddled with stories of bricks and poor code management across many of their devices, as one CM dev recently talked about.
- Real Time clock is oh-so-wrong. We're making CWM backups in the 70s! This one isn't too bad but its still annoying. Again, Samsung is to blame here.
- CM10 still early in development. I don't really know whose fault this is, whether it be Samsung for making things hard for CM devs to get things working on AOSP or a lack of attention for our device. Despite having a "stable" release, CM10 still has a number of known issues that I won't go over here. I still use CM10 and am eternally grateful to the person who pours their free time into giving our device AOSP (I love you, whoever you are) because those aforementioned issues are better than the alternative. It's still a situation where no matter which way I turn I have a buggy phone.
On my O.G. Incredible the only choice I had to deal with was having TV-Out and 720p video recording support or having ps3/Wii controller Bluetooth support. No matter which ROM I chose (AOSP or Stock) everything WORKED. With this phone I have to weigh the evils of each path and simply choose the lesser one.
I'm not really impressed with the DNA either. They do have an unlock (a very brick-prone one at that) but the hardware itself is riddled with issues (No SD card or removable battery, power button hard to press and is on the top of the very long device).
I'll probably get a lot of flak for this post, but its just my opinion. Aside from what I mentioned, I do enjoy the GS3. I just feel I could do much better
