Dear Lord, what an accent!!! - Asus Transformer TF700

Please can someone save me from the dreadful Australian accent used by the new Google Now voice. I have this great app but it uses an accent that sounds like Julia Gillard the Aussie Prime Minister and it makes your ears bleed.
I have gone to settings and used the text to voice settings to choose english US but Julia keeps talking to me. Nothing i have tried changes the tone of the Google Now voice.
Really happy with Jelly Bean but it is torturous to listen to Google Now. Can someone please have pity on my ears and suggest how i might alter this accent.
Thanks so much ...

Try switching to SVOX from the market and using one of their voices.

Best TTS engine in the market is IVONA and they have several different voices you can choose from.

Just go to Google Now main screen and click on settings/Voice /Language/English... then pick a different language dialect.
Edit: Doesn't seem to change the accent wierd.

Thanks for the suggestions, but nothing I have done seemed to work. I tried to change to SVOX with Grace as the chosen voice but the horror accent kept coming.... Finally I went not to the voice settings but the settings on the locale of the phone, after I change the chosen language to US English, finally Julia left and now I have the sweet tones of US English.
Wierd though, as I thought you might control the output from the output settings and yet Google Now takes its settings from the phone language setting.
Thank you all who replied.

Voice assistant for android

Is there any siri like app in the works by Google or HTC for android?
I know there are some in the market, and svoice but none of them are really that great. Tbh siri doesn't seem that great either..
Thanks!

Voice assistant is really just for guys like Stevie Wonder..
Google is making one called Majhel (spelling may be wrong) its supposed to make siri look like a kiddies VTECH toy,I'd expect it in Android 16.0.4
I use Assisstant by Speaktoit. Free on the market. It's very good I use it for everything. Try it. You can customize everything

Somebody else who knows
Anyway it was supposed to release it at the end of 2011/ the beginning of 2012 but apparently they decided to delay it to q4 of this year for improvements.

I can see them saying q1 2013 then q1 2014 and so on and on and on...
Also you can install Vaja TTS engine, better voice than google tts that sounds robotic. Its a Thai TTS engine but also works perfectly with english. You could try just dont hate the accent . Im also using it coz its free.
There is a artificial intelligence called iris siri spelled backwards. It's in infant stage now but is available at play store. Hope this helps.

Android: Notification via voice and confirmation prior to read out
Hi Guys:
Can you guide me to any app that currently has the feature of 'speaking' out new notifications received (all notifications received in the notification bar of android: text messages, calls, emails, Viber/Whatsapp messages, calendar appointments, social media updates etc.).
The requirement is firstly to 'speakout' there is a new notification from xyz and then ask a confirmation to read out the actual message. Not just reading out the message directly.
This feature gives more control over the text to speech functionality and the user can make a choice of either just knowing that there is a new notification or go ahead and also hear the message part.
Appreciate suggestions.
Cheers!

microsoft office (specifically word) app

I am looking to use the infinity for a bit of writing on the go. What is the best app for this? Looking for something as close to MS word as possible, preferably with grammar and spelling check (as in underlining misspelled words) this is useful since getting used to this keyboard will take a few days. Also something that can keep up with my typing speed.
Thanks in advance.

Quickoffice pro/hd is pretty good since it does have spell check and a lot of other features. If you want office 2010 and are willing to go through a little hassle when saving files onlive desktop is a virtual desktop

Its only laggy if youre not on balanced mode. Try out the free version. As for on live, i only sort of tested it not really used it as a permanent solution. If you can live without spell check try the free version of docs to go

I also tried Writer. Which is good in terms of speed, and I am fine with sacrificing the rest, but it has a 9000 character limit. Which is lame... Basically i need something that keeps up with my speed of typing -I am willing to sacrifice the spell/grammar check- has no limit to how long something can be, and can read/write to .doc/.docx So I don't have to lug a laptop around with me.

Does anyone know a app for docx where it's possible to rotate the insert pictures?
Quickoffice HD is a best office suite IMO. There is a reason Google bought them. If you don't need a bunch of features there is always the Google drive app.
You can do it in Kingsoft Office, which - unlike, IMO far worse, QuickOffice - comes for free.
We're supposed to get real MS Office this fall (despite denials ), so you might hold off making a purchase till then, and just live with polaris or another free option.

I haven't experienced lag in quickoffice hd since the newest firmware came out, FWIW. Even on the slowest infinity profile.
So if you want a MS Word-ish app, with spell-check (inherent to the Infinity btw), why not Google Drive?
Works online and offline, does spell check, has lots of other features, is free and I haven't experienced lag.
BTW, performance mode makes your tablet laggy-er. Performance simply means everything looks sharper, it doesn't mean the tablet works better. Balanced mode may yield better performance results at the cost of image sharpness and detail.

So I downloaded google drive, and here is what I have noticed so far.
1. it cannot read/write docx (keeps asking me to open it in another program)
2. I know the spellcheck is inherent to infinity but it does not appear to work in google drive, or at least I couldn't find a way to do it.
Thanks for the tip on the performance an lag issue.

hmmm sorry about the docx incompatibility. i was not aware of that.
as for the spell-checker, make sure it's enabled in your android settings under "language and input"
it's underlining incorrect words as i type this here, and it also works on other apps

ASUS transformer physical keyboard autocorrect

Found a great solution for autocorrect using the physical keyboard. Touchpal keyboard just came out in February of this year and works wonderfully with the physical keyboard. Autocorrect works, as well as input with spacebar, and selecting the next word by using the number row. It's also free. I can't post links yet, so just search for it in the playstore.
I was wondering when that keyboard would come back. Was a good keyboard several years ago

Hello my friends. I really liked touchpal especially that "row number" option you get when the spell options appear. It's really a usefull functionality for me because I use the physical keyboard aswell. The problem is...since i'm Portuguese the keyboard layout gets all messed up!! I tried using other apps like Swift and Ultra and they work really fine 'cause they let you change the key layout but they don't have the "row number" option so every time I want to correct I have to tap the screen... That's not an option because my language as a lot of accents and stuff like that...
Is there some way to change the key layout on touchpal or is there a way to select the spell options in Swift or Ultra using the physical keyboard?
Please help... I'm really frustrated, and I feel that when I'm getting really close to solving this something just goes terrible wrong!! xD
Thank you for the help

Try this go to settings>language and input>then make sure the swift key 3 is the only one checked or lit up. No other keyboards can be checked.
If i helped give the thanks a little tap.
I got rid of swift key because of that. For some reason, when I used polaris office it kept auto correcting all my correctly spelled words into randomness.

Two semi serious questions:
1. How does Polaris feel like a paranoid uncle (I'm genuinely curious - I work for QO and use it fairly often when testing things for customers or just spying on our "competition"'s apps)?
2. It looks like the Galaxy 2 tab can get Jellybean - do you really need Swiftkey with Jellybean (since Jellybean supports the swiping motion)?

Haha I was just being goofy, I simply like QuickOffice better and the general layout and interface of Polaris bothers me for some reason. Purely my own opinion.
Yes jb does have swype, but I don't use it. SwiftKey works better for me and my large fingers, as you can increase the key sizes (sm, med, or lg) . With the stock keyboard, I'm always banging wrong keys. Swift seems to have much better predictions, so I'm much more efficient by using the prediction. It also learns ur patterns. Sorry it sounds like an advert lol

I've never found Polaris Office to work worth a damn on any keyboard, but as I remember SwiftKey and Polaris really, really didn't get along. I have to say OfficeSuite Pro HD is well worth the money.

No worries on the advert front - I get a little frustrated with the keyboard myself, so I'm kind of shopping for a new one to use.
I'd have to agree with you - Quickoffice > Polaris (but I'm biased )

As everyone knows, when Facebook Home came out, it works on only select phones. Well now there's a Patch APK for Home, Facebook, and messenger. All 3 have to be installed. Login to Facebook then turn on Facebook home. Tell me what you think of the app?
For me personally, I would enjoy it more if you can switch UI's while in use.

I've tried Facebook Home on my TF700 and I admit to say I don't like it. The landscape changes to Portrait mode and nothing is really exciting about it. I don't exactly like looking at all the pictures my friends post on Facebook, and some of them are just gross depending on whose picture it is my friends posted.
Anyhow, Facebook Home is nothing but a picture scouter for people to just look through and Like things. It's pretty much almost like Instagram. Plus, the advertisements Facebook put forth on TV...they're not quite exactly bright ideas for the scenarios. One of them (the family dinner table in particular) received a lot of negativity about how it encourages disrespect and ill-mannered actions on the family dinner table.
As if it didn't come with enough bloatware already.....
