Hi guys,
This should work on a rooted phone using stock rom.

So I didn't even notice that this icon just sits there for no real apparent reason and found it to be a nuisance, seeing as how the information it intends to show is pretty useless.
So I changed SystemUI to look like this (this is a screenshot in landscape mode). No more GPS crosshairs:
It's cut off in the image, but the last two toggles will be "Mobile data" and "Sync" on the far right.
100% credit goes to MAD Industries and the packages that he uploaded to this thread. It was one of the first mods I even tried when I first rooted. Killing the gps crosshairs was on his to-do list and was sad to see that there weren't any further updates on it.
Rather than completely delete those crosshair images from the SystemUI package, I just edited the opacity of those images in Gimp so you just don't see them.
Just drop systemui.apk into /system/app
SystemUI will start freaking out and force close repeatedly. Just reboot the phone and you're good to go.
I know this is a ridiculously minor mod, but I was thinking if I had been searching for it, then maybe I might be able to save someone else out there some time. I'm one of those folks that hasn't yet jumped to a stock rom like CleanRom, Synergy, etc.
Thanks.
Nice!:good:
If you don't mind deleting the icon (or saving it elsewhere), here's a writeup:
Disclaimer: Do not attempt this if you don't have a nandroid backup and/or are not comfortable flashing your phone if you brick it. This method alters and replaces crtical system apk files. If you've never used ninjamorph, well then you need to go read. I'll try to answer questions and help.
In ninjamorph:
open a project with systemui.apk, then exit ninjamorph
In a file browser:
go to sdcard\AndroidThemes\workspace\SystemUIapk\res\drawable-hdpi\
delete stat_sys_location_on_2.png and stat_sys_location_e911_2.png
Edit: I just figured out that you can delete files within ninjamorph. So the steps where you delete files from within the file browser, well you can just do it all in ninjamorph and save time.
In ninjamorph:
finish the systemui project
Once it is done, immediately hit power and reboot the phone. If you don't do this quickly before something uses systemui.apk, then the phone will freeze and you'll have to battery pull. After the reboot, you should be AOK and without those annoying GPS icons.
Thank you so much. I was looking for this. Works great.
Very glad that I could be of some help.
DUDE! Thank you so much for that write up! Been dying to get rid of that icon!
This also added a wifi on/off button in the notification bar which I wanted. The downside is that the data button is now at the end of the right side but not a big problem.
Deleting the file gets rid of the Icon but the space in the noti bar cannot be filled by another icon. So you cant see it but the space is still filled. Any way to fix this?

I notice that too, but I only notice it when the 'smart stay' icon pops up.
What other icons are there to the left of the gps-crosshairs/location icons?
As far as I know, MAD mentioned that completely editing out that area of the status bar takes a lot of work, smali edits, etc.
The other alternative may be to resize the .png files to a 1x1 pixel image and see if that helps, but I don't have much time to give that a try today.
Just tried shrinking the png files to 1 pixel in width. Doesn't work. The space is still reserved but again, I only notice it when the smart stay icon pops up. I drive myself crazy over a lot of things but not going to with this lol.
It would be nice to just turn this "feature" off and reclaim a little screen real estate.

When I was on stock I was able to delete it without any ill effects like the space not being filled again. I used ninjamorph.
Notification menu gone
I dragged and dropped the apk into system/app, rebooted the phone and now I have no notification menu. Anyone else get this?
ready to give this a shot, m-cat did you fix your issue with the notification menu? if so have any idea what caused it?

I had the same thing happen to me. Thankfully, had an old copy SystemUI backed up by TiB. Until I restored the old file and deleted the modded SystemUI from system/app, reboots did not restore the notification bar and SystemUI kept crashing.

notification missing
No I didn't find a fix, I restored and have been living with it the crosshairs.

Fair enough on the section... even though it's compiled rather than a theme... I could have put it elsewhere. The mods are pretty friendly round here though, so no harm no foul.
Didn't mean to step on your territory either... I couldn't find a morph for 5.0.7 that didn't break services.jar. Sorry if I didn't look hard enough. I take no creative credit, nor do I intend to maintain, I just thought it filled a gap. Perhaps I was wrong. If this is the case the mods can delete.

but just use correct section.

Excellent, thanks for the update!

=D
can this be flashed via recovery?
or do i have to push the 2 files to the appropriate places via ADB?
thanks in advance
EDIT: had to push the 2 files using ADB; works great, using it on nightly from yesterday
Nice, been looking for just the bar.
Ok, stupid question time, I have adb set up on my laptop, but the power cord is fried, need to wait for the replacement to come in. Could I just use root explorer to copy the files over? I'm guessing I'd need to mount r/w first though.

You can use root explorer after mounting /system as rw yes (do this with root explorer). Copy the files as in post #1 and reboot.
Bug
This causes the market to FC every time it tries to install anything.
I've wiped and reflashed cyan 507 t2 and all is ok. as soon as i push servicer.jar and the framework-res.apk it causes market to FC when it tries to install...
Using Root Explorer kept putting me in a boot loop, the phone reboots as soon as I try to replace the framework-res file. I threw adb on my store's pc, got it working just fine that way, thanks for this.
@adam, go to settings -> applications -> Manage applications and go to Market. Uninstall updates, and everything should work fine.

Yes, colours, depth, size and transparency. In fact they're better optimised than the stock images. This was just a stop-gap until somebody releases a 5.0.7 morph or theme though.

Alright I'm having a little bit of an issue -- hopefully someone can help. I'm trying to modify the usb plugged/unplugged icon and the 'clear' button, as well as the signal strength icons. The goal is to get the notification bar looking like stock android. Is there a method of going about this that I'm missing? I'm sure it's going to be something in the xml and I've apktool'd the apk and the framework-res.apk -- but I'm hardpressed to find the references, anyone able to help?
Thanks!

What are you talking about? It's nothing but swapping out PNGs or editing them to fit your needs. The only things you even need to touch are going to be in the drawable folders.
Don't touch the XML... just don't.
I think he is talking about the location of the png he is looking for.
The USB, I dunno, i cant find it either. not in htc-res. prolly in another apk.
signal strength icons are in there (htc-res). cdma_sys_6signal_0.png through cdma_sys_6signal_null.png (as in 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,null)
Clear button? On the notification drop down? I believe that is a generic button that resides in framework-res.

uh, so, let's take the USB icon plugged/unplugged for example.
that should be stat_sys_data_usb.png in framework-res.apk, correct? That, for example, in my framework-res.apk that's sitting in /system/framework, is the default android AOSP icon for USB. When I'm using my phone, it's the HTC one with the black background.
Like I said, maybe I'm missing something, but any help is appreciated.

I believe most of the pngs for the taskbar are located in the htc.com.resource.apk or whatever.
It's been a bit since I've messed with taskbar icons, but, I'll check in a bit.
I think I might be onto something, I think it's actually going to be in PCSCII.apk -- since HTC has their own sync handling.
Yup. That was it. confused the **** out of me because I knew I had updated the one in framework-res. POS HTC apps sometimes..sorry for the bugging there.

I was trying to remove the battery from the notification area completely. I found the pngs in the framework or com.resource apk (dont recall which). And of course the battery dissappeared. However, it left the space blank, the other icons like signal strength, gps, etc, did not move over. Anyone know how to fix it so the other icons will shift over to the right where the battery was?
On a side note, i removed the gps disabled icon, and other icons move over into its place. So there must be something more involved in the damn battery icons.
thanks

well, most of what I have is courtesy of MrPuffin's awesome work with the AOSP stuff (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710162) - I've just been trying to tweak whatever's left as well as the stock apps, I want my UI to look and feel as much like AOSP as possible. If I had my choice, I'd be running CM6, but the inability to keep my PRL up to date as well as the battery life savings of baked snack are keeping me on 2.1 for now.
Here's what I have currently.

It was done on the Hero HERE. Perhaps you can figure out how they did those removal mods and make them for the EVO.
This theme was tested on CM6 and FreeX10 (thanks, bcool15 for testing on FX10!)
This theme's base is desire/cyanogen6
I do not take credit for any of the graphics used in this theme!!! It is a hybrid of Sempiternal's X FX10 theme and this theme created by vukandric. Big thanks to both of them for all the hard work they have put into creating both these themes!!!

For anyone who is interested in the CM tweaks file I'm currently using I have included it in the download. This will complete the theme, including battery percentage, etc, just like shown in my screenshots. Extract the rar file directly to your SD card's root folder. The filepath should look like this:
SD card>CMtheme>Slimer.xml
Open android settings and navigate to CM settings>user interface>tweaks extras>select a theme....select Slimer.

The battery meter is supposed to flash when it charges. Without the tweaks applied the percentge won't show. Sorry, I will reupload the theme with the phone app. I forgot to include it with the theme originally.
Dock icons are part of launcher pro, not the theme.

Nice looking theme!!
So I installed the theme and am loving it BUT I can't seem to get the Notification Power Widget to work. I have everything selected properly but it just won't show.
Also, there is this gray bar along the top of the lockscreen that shows my provider on the right but also has a Plus sign in the middle and then just gray to left. I tried adjusting the settings for the Date and Provider settings in CM Settings but nothing seems to make the bar disappear. It will make my provider information disappear but the plus sign and gray bar remain. Any suggestions?

I have no doubts that it should work, just trying to figure out why it isn't.
I have quite a few backups from the stuff I was doing so it's not a problem to get back to my previous 2.1 install. It's just a pain.....making a backup as I type this.
I'll try to restore the backup I made before I installed the theme and if that doesn't work, then I guess I'm back to the reinstall Beta 4 option.

Just out of curiousity, with which basebands is this theme meant to work? I am running baseband .55 and was wondering if that might have something to do with the issues I was experiencing.
I created a mod to get rid of the brightness slider (I use auto-brightness 99% of the time) and added back the Wifi toggle that I had in another mod that was for ICS. Here's a screenshot:

}
So the mod only involves:
Adding the Wifi toggle
Removing brightness slider
Changing the padding around the 'No notifications' text (it gets funked up after removing the slider)
Removed useless e911 location icons from showing up in status bar
That's all that was done. Just unzip the file and drop SystemUI.apk into /system/app, change permissions on the file to rw-r--r-- and then restart and you're good to go. You have to be rooted obviously.
This has been tested on latest JB leak VRBLK1.
I hope others might find it somewhat useful. Thanks.
Edit: I've moved on to adding a blue theme to this original mod which can now be found here. I'm sorry about the multiple posts. Moderators, please feel free to delete this post if you catch this.
What file manager do you recommend. I have never moved a system file.
I tried this with ghost commander, and it will not let me over write a system file
Thanks
I may be missing it- but I don't see a downloadable file and/or link. Also, if you just want to remove that annoying slider (I too use auto 99% of the time), do you have a mod for that, or know where one is? Also, I'd like to keep the green, but I'm not picky- I just want that darn slider gone.
Let me know.
Thanks

Is there any way to make this work on an SII? (E4GT) I have scoured XDA and other sites looking for a mod or hack to remove the slider for my model, and have had no luck thus far. There are many different toggle mods I've found out there, and yet none of them put in an option to remove or edit the brightness slider.
I am still amazed by this, because personally I think it is the stupidest add to JB, and even more idiotic that there are zero setting options to enable/disable it. I did see that in a recent update for the SIII, they added this option, but still no one has adapted it for the SII yet. I too use auto-brightness, so the slider is worthless to me, and it takes up a third of the space in the notification bar when you drag it down- poor design and zero functionality for me.
I've posted a question in the E4GT Q&A section twice about a mod for it and not one person had anything to offer one way or another. I guess I'm just really surprised there is little discussion and even less progress on this.
Had the idea this morning, and managed to get it looking/working perfectly the same day Let me know if you like it, and I'll pass it out...

I'm not using twlauncher, so it won't really "fit" with my set up, BUT, that's pretty freaking impressive! Awesome work!

its nice!!!!!
love the options as always and how u have ticker mods in tsm.
OT question?
i manage to make stausbar dissappear when editting the wrong things lol, so i was wondering what all would we be able to mod in the soft key area? like could we use that 142x400 line or what not to show statusbar? and use rss button realistate to call on softkeys in ticker for a slightly bigger screen.
just thought of if at 4am while working on zimage repacking all night
Or maybe set search as expand statusbar.
What do you think buddy?

Well, I have been trying to modify the softkey area for a while now.. What I personally wanted to do was allow rotating of the softkey icons What I saw when trying to do that though was the kernel and services.jar working together to display the softkeys/set their functions...
To answer your question, kinda, I will throw out my thoughts. 1) Because of the "gray screen overlay" overtop of the softkey area, it'll make the statusbar 'dulled' down, which would probably turn everyone off (including me )... 2) If we did manage to move it down there, there would be the ultimate problem of 'expanding' it then, since the softkey/main/ticker screens are all declared as separate screens, and moving in between them in one swoop isn't really possible. 3) The code to display the notification bar is within framework-res, while the code to display the softkeys is within the kernel/services... So being able to swap the functions from the notification down to the softkey area won't be (easily) possible...
But, your last comment might just be do-able... Actually, what would be even more doable would be having a 'button' in the ticker that would 'show/hide' the notification bar... That's because the functions for the softkeys are pre-set at /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl, and I wouldn't know where to start adding a custom one ...
EDIT: are you looking to hide the notification bar on just the homescreen, or everywhere???
EDIT EDIT: I came up with two adb commands for implementing hiding/showing the statusbar EVERYWHERE... Looking to incorporate it now in java...
i kinda figured kernel issues cause of the 3 screen issue.
well ive been messing with repack kernel and got one repacked with su and busy box and actually turn boot ani off, (for quickboot). looking to add init.d as soon as i revert back to stock to test rooted kernel and get statusbar back.
since i havent had a statusbar for a couple days i was enjoying the bigger screen and thinking of a statusbar button (pulldown), or what not
any and evrything (discussion etc) is appreciated.
Wait, you successfully compiled a kernel for gingerbread? Or you just modded what we had?!
And I managed to make an app that will turn on/off the statusbar everywhere for our phone, and I managed to take the code and get it work inside the ticker... However, what would you like the 'activation' method be? Getting rid of the 'Ticker History Button' function, and instead setting it as the source for enabling/disabling the statusbar? Or a button somewhere in the ticker, (like where the sleep mode usually is), that does it?
Or has this side-tracked into something you aren't interested in, hahah

I can add the triple tap function no problem, but you gotta pick out the icon you want, haha.. You can either have just one image, or two, either works for me!

Awesome. Had to start from stock again.... it sucks when I had a great hacked kernel, then I didn't back it up before I hackeed another zimage in the same folder to replace it
