Trusted Credentials - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I know another stupid question from a noob. Under settings, security, trusted credentials. There are so many and a lot of them are in different languages, never really paid attention before. Why are they there and how do I know if they are really trustworthy? What would happen if I started disabling them, am I going to screw things up? Or are they just credentials from web sites that I visted and disabling them would just prevent me from going to that web site?
Thanks

They're from websites or corporate WiFi networks. Leave them there.

Google announces privacy changes across products; users can’t opt out

Do you think anyone can develope a program to prevent google from capturing this information about their users? Maybe at least on a android based platform even. This really chaps my a$$
Code:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/google-tracks-consumers-across-products-users-cant-opt-out/2012/01/24/gIQArgJHOQ_story.html?wpisrc=al_comboNE_b
Whats the big deal? Google cuts down on paperwork and the policies haven't changed, they are just merged/ It eliminated redundancies and wasted effort.
what difference does it make if you are giving your personal information to Gmail or to youtube? If google has it, Google has it, period. It is still a Google based service, combining the private policies of all of the services into one makes perfect sense.
Google has stated they still have no plans to change how they handle the data.
The big deal is I NEVER CLICK YES for gooble to collect anything on me, which means I "opt-out" now I have a contract on a phone I dont want to touch. great, a 700$ paperweight , not including the service. screw you google.
I will not tap "yes" for google
Are you sure that they are 700 $?
Rage! An ad/marketing company makes my OS and wants to show me ads relevant to me rather than random ads. A company wants to make money off of a product they've created and are heavily vested in? Who'd have thunk it?
Don't like it? There's other choices out there. WP7 is pretty hot ;-)

Wait til wp7 phones get ads lol
Have to say though to op its not like google are pushing ads to your device. If you browse net you get same problem. I think they have messed up somewhere cos on my laptop I always get ads for things I already have. But I don't get ads on my phone unless on a webpage or using an ad funded app so no different to a pc or any internet device.

Hence the lol
But the point is google aren't sending ads any different than on a pc. Whatever phone pc or tablet people use makes no difference, google and others can and do still collect data when you browse.
And some collect other data even when you opt out such as wp7 collecting user data that caused them to get sued last year. Its impossible to have a smartphone and not have someone collect data of some sort.

What would be the best way to avoid this?
a problem I could see is if like, I have my son over on a weekend and he jumps on...idk, nickelodeon. com or something, will it show ads for all the porn sites I visit?
I sure as hell wouldn't want him reporting that to his mother and even possibly the appropriate authorities...
just curious but in what way is this different, if not dramatically worse, than everything CarrierIQ was accused of a few months back.
I wonder if this will affect things like StartPage which bills itself as being completely private but is "enhanced by Google"
This is why I have dead email addresses. I've got one for Gmail just for my phone. Never use it for anything else. Just the phone.
Don't Be Evil, just make lots and lots of money.
The real problem is the internet. There are always the spammers that get a kick out of just breaking someone else's things, and that's why almost all websites log things. It also creates privacy concerns for those trying to follow the rules. So if it bothers you so much that Google knows you search for a laptop, and it suggests that there is a better, cheaper one, next time you use gmail, then you have problems. I personally love this, now when I go between Google services, I don't have to log in again. Google provides you with great services for free, why not give them the ability to advertise to you? The world is dangerous, get over it.
Or you could do the most practical thing, ad block. Its on Firefox and chrome, so that should cover almost everybody. If your stuck with ie, well, god help you.

You agreed to their terms of service. As has been pointed out, the information is used so they can show ads that pertain to you specifically. I view this as a good thing.
If you don't want a company to know your browsing and purchasing habits, you should buy a cabin in the woods and live off the grid, no electronics, no grocery stores, completely self sufficient.
Good luck!

Revolution/diabolic jr finally been banned

Well I was bored so i started looking into profiles. I ran across Diabolic Jr profile and it said "Account currently disabled" after doing more digging i got it confirmed by a mod that he has been banned for "Specific Reasons". It only took forever.
Edit: looks like the lovely mods let him back in. Got hopes up for nothing. Thanks alot mods. Grrrrr
Sorry to sound stupid but who is this guy? I remember he posted a thread earlier saying something like "should I?" (assuming to come back to make more roms) and was garnered with hatred by alot of users.
He used to post alot of roms for this device lik 6 most were horrifying except like 2 plus he would complain about lack of gb or samsung support n trolled a little bit he moved on seemed kind of cocky typical 14 to 16 yearold im 15 myself he was a much better person prior to dec after that he turned rude

That is true but only to a point. Wireless internet IE cable/broadband is always the same. Only if you change the modem does the ip address change. But if you are on a wireless network IE sprint verizon tmobile etc etc it is ever changing. However the gate ip address is always the same. Each state has its own gate ip address. The only way to change that is to move to another state.
sprint blackberry phones (and probably verizon too, since they are both cdma networks) have an option called enable static ip address, when enabled, it always shows your ip adress as 0000 etc etc. by now there are probably some android devices with this option. not to mention the fact that websites only record the ip adress you register with. all he had to do was register with a different ip address or a static ip address. hell, i have been banned from other forum sites and all i did was use a different email address. its not that hard to register with fake information.

True. But if people that have been banned attempt to use mobile device to by pass that xda can block remote access to sprint verizon tmobile etc etc there by rendering any registering from ip addresses belonging to said carriers not possible. Its very simple.
first, i doubt the mods can really block remote access to carriers ip addresses. second, even if they could, i doubt they would go to that much trouble just for this guy diabolic. they would also have to know it was him that was trying to do that, and unless they did it in the past, they have no record to go by. third, even if they did block him from using a static ip address, all he has to do then is go to the library. as i said before, they only record the ip address you register with. the library will obviously have a different ip address than his home computer. once he registers with a different ip address, he can log on through his home computer without being detected. it is really not that hard to get back into a website that you have been banned from. the mods arent going to go to a lot of trouble to keep him from coming back. whatever security measures this website has are most likely automated, as with most websites. its much more realistic to think that they will just ban him again if they catch him using this site.

Well they do have the tools. My bud has tmobile and he attempted to create a xda username. Mid way thru the processor it blocked him saying "Tmobile Wireless Static IPs are not able to register with xda due to misuse". He was never an xda member to begin with. I lead him to root and roms but he had to use his wifi connection to register. Trust me. Xda does have the tools to block this stuff.
then why was i able to register on my phone without using wifi? you keep trying to argue this point. there are plenty of ways around being banned. this guy diabolic may not have been a genius, but i dont think he was an idiot. he is a developer, maybe not a good one, but im sure he knows something about computers. if he wants back on this site, i am sure he can find a way. you just keep acting like the mods are smart enough to catch him no matter what, and this site has the greatest security. ever heard of spoofing an ip address? several ways to do it and its not that hard. easier than spoofing a phone number. if you want to keep thinking this guy wont be able to come back no matter what, then keep thinking that. i choose to think realistically, so i know that if this guy wants to come back, he will find a way.
who cares if he comes back? its not going to be the end of the world.
thats my point exactly. this guy is acting like he is charles manson or something and everyone is on the lookout for him. smh.

How did you manage to get unbanned. That is pure bull **** on the mods part. Several great devs were banned for kanging work and here you are back. I am going to email the admin of xda. I do not know what is going on but someone somewhere screwed the pooch on letting you back. Absolutely speechless over the mods lack of ability to run this site.
It was a week ban for flaming, not for "kanging".
Email him he won't do anything..
I got banned for flaming a person because they flamed me and we both got banned.
If you look at all of my work it's never KANGED.
I always add my credits, the only thing that I was wrong for was not adding credit in one of my roms.
I even said sorry and your still acting like this, wow.

I agree .... just recently a criminal in my area was found and arrested after the police called his cell phone provider and had them track him for them... now it's good that a criminal was caught but the possibility of abuse of the tracking abilities of these phones is too risky for me .... I would love to see some privacy apps come out that can get a handle on this issue.
Here they need a warrent if they want to track your Phone through the provider and over here the providers wont give any info if they dont have to as far as i know.

Well... If you perhaps looked into what that app is, you'd find that it's the engine powering Samsung stock ROM email services?
Before you claim something is a backdoor, and that removing it leads to "no more spying", what about some proper analysis of the app?
The app is not present on stock version of Android either

190 Gb - really? I think you need to either check your stats are correct there, or look at the traffic you've sent/received in terms of Email.
You can't "call" a backdoor using these userland tools, as a good backdoor won't appear in them...
I would more worry about the millions of users who check e-mail on a device on public WiFi (secured with password or not).
So many people connect to POP accounts with the credentials sent in plain text format with no secure e-mail setup.
Same applies to some Apps not just the main App bundled with the system.
P.S. I am not talking about sending passwords by e-mail in plain text. (yet I worry for the masses that do that also.)
I am talking about those who have e-mail accounts setup on a device, but the e-mail client communicates with the e-mail server for log-in with an unsecured / unencrypted protocol.

Good thread, thanks has been given. Have a look into my signature. This is the project I am very fire and flame for at the moment. If you would like to know when being traced down by law enforcement agencies or police, participate in developing this awesome app!
NSA's sole purpose is spying, they will die but do this. They try to spy on everybody not just in USA but all over the world. Smartphones are not the only target. They put their hands on everything, I am sure Windows and other OS and most popular software are full of hidden back-doors inserted by NSA. Of course it is done without warrants. It is approved by secret judges in secret courts. Thanks Snowden and other guys to poor more light on this.
Im glad this forum was started... I am very excited about android security as well and for a good reason: I have a lot of highly confidential patient files on my phone and tablet and would never imagine of giving them up.
For the communtiy who want more : there's an app out of beta but still in developement called network connections. google it. It monitors the current live connections and their IP address. In my opinion very useful but i think its needs a rigerous run. Ive been using wireshark but thats a bit too hectic given my time constraints. Oh and the dev has graciously put the pro version for free download for this week only. so give that a try and let me know.
Of course, lets not kid ourselves into believing Android is secure from highly funded and powerful spying agencies.

A cell provider can track you like this regardless of what type of phone you have. It's not a smartphone thing. All they need to do is see what cell tower your phone is connected too (any network, not just data). And since it's their tower they know where it is - hence they know your approximate location from you turning your phone on.
So if you don't want your provider to know where you are - don't connect to their network.

At one time everyone was warning of the day we'd have ID chips implanted in us to track our every movement. No need for that, we all willingly submit by carrying phones.
There is no privacy software that will help you. Your carrier can be compelled by secret courts to hand over any metadata associated with your account. This is not isolated to the US. Canada is doing it too, and probably many other countries.
If you want privacy, you can't connect to any networks.

Really, all this NSA bs is nothing new. If you are just now aware that spy agencies can spy on you now, well welcome to the modern age. They could spy on your phone even before smartphones existed.
Now what they are mostly doing is "Data Mining" on top of being able to hear what you say and if you really think you can do something against it, think again. And BTW, every developed country does it. The whole evil NSA is just antiamerican propaganda. If you think the russians are not spying or the chinese are not spying, think again. Maybe this will ease your conscience a bit by knowing that everybody spies.
If you are afraid of being spied and you have valuable information, you should not be asking major geopolitical agencies to change their policy, instead you should get off the internet. These are matters of "National Security".
Wellcome to the information age.
Information is power.

Which location to use with a VPN

Hello,
with PIA VPN I have the choice of using a few dozen different locations. I have been using it for several years now, but only now I realized habit. Instinctivly, I never use the VPN location of the country that I actually am in.... but I also realized that using the VPN server in the same country, of course gives one the fastest connection. So my question:
Other than habit, is there actually a real reason NOT to use the VPN server in the country I am in?
Thank You
To get around Geo location restricted sites or to further anonymize your web traffic

Well, of course to get around geo location..... but my question had obviously another reason and "to further anonymize your web traffic" is no answer. It is actually the question.. does it or does not. Why do you think it does?
Using a VPN server in your country gives you a ping of around 20/30... using ANY other country ping takes at least four or five times as long....
So.. do you really know any reason?
Well a VPN encrypts your data from a to b and so anyone in the middle can not see your traffic only if they have compromised a or b
But if people know the typical you on the internet and see this type of traffic coming out a certain place they can still track you and stay in the know about you.

I understand that possibility, although I do not see how someone can check zillions of files from from a certain server.
But as far as I can understand... about this, it can make no difference which VPN in which country I use. Which was what I asked...
I intuitivly do NOT use the VPN server offered in my country, and as that one is of course always much faster than all the others, I am questioning my intuition
Do you mind enlightening why you use a VPN
For me I have no real reason although I find it kinda of cool to be anonymise on the internet to have no net profile but it's very late in the game and I'm sure my online profile will always be there but I will try to teach my kids when they get to that point to be as anonymise as possible and still use the net then be completely afraid to be in the net

I am tempted to ask if the reason for this is that there actually is no reason not to use a VPN in the country of residence, or if simply no one wants to think at all...

Say you have a company with many branches, and you have to connect them together so they can share resources. One way to do it will be to configure port-forwarding on your routers so your servers in one location can be accessed by the outside world. But this has many security flaws. You can also use a Site-To-Site VPN which creates a virtual encrypted tunnel between the two branches, and the traffic can flow from one branch to another, as if they were in the same subnet.
Another example: say you have off-site employees and they want to connect to the company network. Again, you can either configure port forwarding or you can configure a Remote Access VPN so they can connect to the company network and use resources (printers, file servers, web servers, etc) like they could if they were physically in the company building.
There are few types of VPNs: IPSec, PPTP, L2TP.

stealing data

Just a heads up to everyone. Someone on here is stealing data from users. I have tried multiple ROMs and kernels so I don't know exactly which one but my account that are exclusive to this phone keep getting logins from other countries. There is no way to explain all my accounts getting stolen other then from here

Try looking up your email on the avast hack check. This might help you to figure out where your data leaked

It's probably something you installed using aptoide
Edit: Also, I know all the developers and rom builders for polaris pretty well and I don't think it's fair to just come on here and accuse them when you have zero proof of anything...
