[Q] Imo Lean Kernel, CWM and OTA - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Will I need to flash the stock kernel back on my phone to take the OTA or will it work with Imo's kernel? I tried to reflash the boot.img from my nandroid and wifi was not working, so I reflashed Imo's kernel and wifi works again and I am sitting in a holding pattern. I'd rather not have to ODIN back to full stock because I only have access to PC's at work and don't really have time in the day at work to be doing stuff like that while there.
Also can I just download EZ Recovery and flash the stock recovery?
Phone is rooted, unlocked, CWM with Casual and Imo's Lean Touchwiz kernel. TIA

What exactly makes you want the update? If it's the radio (which imo is the only reason to consider the OTA) then just get the radio and flash it in CWM.

i already have the radios flashed but I've had this weird issue that seems to only happen after flashing the kernel but has only happened on a few occasions mainly on the weekends at my daughter's 2 soccer games to be exact. Camera and video have acted weird, first was video controls were upside down, had to reboot a few times for it to fix and just yesterday everything I shot shows fine in gallery but when I go to import into Instagram the pics are all rotated 90 degrees.
I can't afford to have data issues which is the reason I haven't installed a custom ROM since I use my phone for work quite a bit. Figured go back to stock kernel, take OTA to clean out any weird issues that would linger and wait for either official JB or for ROMs to get solid on data issues.

Yes, but remember if you don't already have the OTA notification nothing with come just because you removed the custom recovery. If you've already received that notification then disregard this post.

Thanks Snoop, been getting the OTA notification for 2 weeks now. I thought originally after it failed because of CWM it disappeared but woke up a few mornings to my phone being in CWM asking if i wanted to install the OTA and thinking to myself, "good god how long has my screen been on?!"

No problem. If you still notice weird issues then Odin to an older firmware and accept the OTA from there.

Voodoo Lagfix and others after GB Update?

Okay ... So I am about to update to the latest pushed version. Am rolling back to EE4 now and have the update.zip on my card. What about CWM? Does my current version I've been using with my Gummy Charged 2.1 work with it? I have the Imosyn (sp) kernel on my card that I will apply after the update to 2.3.6 for root, as I understand it.
Are there any Gummy's or anything that are going to work after the 'official' update?
You don't use CWM with the update. You use stock recovery.
Gummy is EP1W. If you install it over the OTA, you'll bring yourself right back down to EP1, and the update will be pointless. You can get lagfix by running imoseyon kernel. It's EP4. It's slightly older EP4, but I haven't had any issues.

Thank you sir! Phone is updating now. I will apply the imoseyon kernel after it's done. Lagfix is the main thing anyhow, I can nuke the bloatness with my Titanium.
now I'm confused .... I no longer have CWM recovery. How am I to apply the imoseyon kernel via stock recovery? Can I just rename it as update.zip?
By taking it back to stock EE4 and installing the update, one of the things it did was restore the default recovery environment.
Go back into ODIN and install CWM, don't use Auto-Reboot. When it's done flashing, turn the phone off and hold the button combinations to start the phone into CWM. Flash iMoseyOn's kernel and you're done at that point.

Ahhhh.... it's @ the Sammy screen and she's talking to me! Looks like all is good while it re-writes the allocation tables. Thanx again, appreciate the heck out of the help.
hmmm .... I guess all is not well ... I installed the kernel but I don't have root. I installed superuser from the market and then Titanium and when opening Titanium I have no root .... what next?

You SHOULD have root since the kernel is your root method. Have you tried restarting?

Yeah I sure have. The kernel I used is imoseyon_kernel_charge_gb_4.0.0 ... not rooted .... guess I need to drop five yards and punt (do it all over)
Edit: The one thing I did not do prior to rolling back to EE4 was to do the big 3 wipe of data/cache/etc ..... maybe that's the problem?

Try installing Superuser from the Market? imosyeon kernel should have installed binary and apk, but maybe it missed part of it. If all else fails, flash the superuser zip from CWM.
http://www.toms-world.org/android/download/http/Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip
Yes, I had installed SU from the market and didn't have root. I had an SU zip saved on my desktop .... su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed .... I put that on the sd and installed it and I am rooted !!
Thanx Again
I love Lagfix and Voodoo Sound, but I'm currently running the stock kernel. I read in other forum discussion that Samsung designs their kernels to work with their OS revisions. People have said they're getting the best performance with the stock kernel.
Until IMoseyOn releases a new kernel based on the EP4D source that was released, I'm going to stick with stock.
Just some food for thought.

My concern was updating to 2.3.6 and having root. (on the road all day and need wireless tethering so outlook is open on laptop) Using the tad older imoseyon kernel gave me that, plus lagfix, which I have liked since this phone hit the market. I'm good for now, I can always update when the latest and greatest comes out.

I have root on the stock kernel bro. Did a clean EE4 install, skipped as much set up as possible, ran update.zip in stock recovery, ODIN flashed imnuts' latest CWM recovery with auto-reboot disabled, booted directly into CWM recovery, flashed the latest SU zip, then ran setup as normal. Boom! Root.
Completely clean install, latest OS and kernel, root, plus tether works and everything.
Right now I'm just waiting on imnuts' TW4 theme to launch (he's estimating Sunday). Hopefully I can install that theme over a debloated and deodexed version of the latest OTA. It won't be long before IMoseyOn releases a kernel built from source that enables Lagfix. That's really all I'm missing, since Voodoo Control lets me load most of Voodoo Sound on top of the stock kernel.
What I'm REALLY looking forward to is an release of Liberty for the Charge or something AOSP if we ever get the 4G RIL sorted out... This things will take considerable time though.
It just doesn't matter ... In all honesty I liked the feel of the Gummy GBE 2.1 better than this stock ginger ... but again, it just doesn't matter to me. Functionality is all I care about, it's only a damn phone !!!
I loaded up the debloated/deodexed/rooted all-in one package danalo posted in development, flashed perfectly and after a wipe in CWM on first boot seems to be running fine except for the poop

Care to make a thread of what you done? Files used? I want to re-root my Charge, but want to keep the latest ota update and radios. Main question is the "update.zip" file?
iMoseyOn has stated that he's not going to be developing kernels anymore due to him having to turn in all of his phones to his old employer. He's taken up a new job and because of that he has to return his phones, including the Droid Charge.

Yeah, I read last night. Awful news. I hope someone can just get us full Voodoo and EXT4 support. I don't absolutely need OC/UV, but it'd be nice...
In other bad news, imnuts is getting a Galaxy Nexus and only pledging support for the Charge for "a few more months."
Let's hope JT and the gang can get this RIL figured out, so we can at least have Team Douche to continue development with CM 7.2 and CM 9...

Damn. And I thought it couldn't get any worse with iMoseyOn leaving. And now we have imnuts leaving too? It just went from bad to worse in a matter of 48 hours!
Guess I better get used to just using the stock kernel.

Help! boot loop

ok so i rooted a few weeks ago and downloaded the usual apps. super user titanium back up and clock work mod. tried to flash a rom with clock work mod and got the e:signature verification failure message. found a post for a kernal that made clock work mod actually work so i tried to flash a rom. zSimplyAOKPV5_Dark to be exact. now it sticks on boot screen. i have searched for hours and cannot find a way to fix my problem. its my first rooted android and first attempted rom flash and i botched it right off the rip. please help?
Depending on what you did beforehand, you have some options.
If you have backed everything up previously, just flash back to stock with one of the one-click stock roms in the Development section (they're in a sticky).
If you haven't backed everything up, try holding V+/V-/power until it reboots. If it doesn't take you to recovery, you can try to flash a kernel (most likely one that would match the version of android/rom you were running prior to this flash) and see if it lets you into recovery. You'll have to flash it with either Odin or Heimdall, after rebooting into download mode (power off, hold V+/V-, insert USB).
If that doesn't work, though, the stock flashing would probably be your best and/or only bet.
it wont allow me into recovery though i can get to download mode by pulling the battery and pressing just the volume +- and plugging in the usb. i was trying to flash an ics slim rom. thanks for your very speedy response.
i have now tried to flash a stock rom however it is not working from there even with the stock kernal. now it is hanging on the at&t screen.
ok i got it. seems the kernal i flashed to help cwd work properly was the culprit. now i dont know how im going to flash this ics rom im looking at without it.

Flash corn kernel if you have stock gingerbread
Sent from my SGH-I897
The utility in my signature can help you flash the Corn Kernel so that you will have CWM.
I have corn kernal and odin 3 on the computer at home. Ill do that tonight. Any suggestions on a good stable rom for a noob? Preferably ics. I hated posting for fear of being flamed as a noob. My wife keeps making fun of me for it so I kinda have to get it done. I want to fix hers also. Its a great little phone it just seem a bit buggy to me. Very laggy. Thanks for all the help.

Maybe start with a KK4 based rom such as Legend and then move up to ICS after that. I only say that because there is a bug in ICS that could render your internal SD unusable. It's rare, but when it happens you will not be happy.
Still unable to get corn kernal to flash. I've tried a few of your guys fixes but I'm gonna have to get some other updates to my computer first.

[Q] Having some issues with the S-Pen

Ok, Here goes. FIrst off I would like to say I am on a 32GB Note 10.1 N8013 which has been rooted with the CWM method and I am also past my return and exchange window at Best Buy.
A few days ago my S-pen suddenly stopped working suddenly. Every time I removed it from the tablet touch would stop working completely and i would have to reboot the tablet. (the popup menu would still disappear when i put the pen back in the slot). I looked in the forums and saw that some people had similar issues, such as Mitchellvii here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1848838&highlight=not+working
I tried everything in that thread from flashing stock kernel, recovery and UEALH2 firmware (both pre-rooted by Entropy and bone stock from Jaaka), but nothing works. Now every time the tablet goes to sleep the touch is unresponsive and I have to reboot. The S-pen still does not work and I have no idea what to try next.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
-jjflemin
Mods can delete this. Everything works again after flashing stock UEALH2 from Jaaka, flashing Entropy's Triangle Kernel and rooting with CWM method. Kind of strange that the pen didn't work until it was rooted again.
wait, so are you saying that you managed to get the S pen working again after flashing stock UEALH2 and Entropy's kernel, but after you rooted the note it stopped working again?
Where is this triangle kernel you're speaking of? None of entropy's posts mention triangle kernel, I only see stock, rooted stock and CM posts.
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda app-developers app
EDIT:
I got it to work:
1. Flash this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849994
2. Flash the UEALH2 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1853209
that should do the trick. Installing CWM and SuperSU did not fix the problem for me. Flashing rooted stock and kernel did.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849015
That is Entropy's kernel with triangle away support.
What I meant was that it didn't work right away once I flashed UEALH2 and stock kernel, but started working again when I rooted it with the CWM method. Really not sure why that would be.

[Q] Can't install roms anymore

I have noticed a couple of similar threads, but they're older. Pl let me know if a thread is available for my issue: I have flashed multiple roms on my VGS3 for months. Now I can't install a custom rom. I've flashed the stock root update, I've tried CWM, CWM Touch and TWRP, and I am unable to flash a rom that I want. I have tried six different ones, all newer roms updated within the last 30 days. It starts to read the update then it just stops and says "failed" or sometimes I get the unable to install system 7 prompt. Either way it's driving me crazy. I'm used to having the rom of my choice on my phone (this is your guys' fault LOL) and I'm stuck with the stock rom. I have checked, I'm rooted. I can use EZ Recovery and EZ Bootloader with no problems, I can flash different recoveries. I've heard there are other recoveries but I'm not familiar with them. Thanks y'all.
I would Odin back to stock and then root and flash clean. I have never had any problems like you are having. Had some issues flashing with twrp once but I flashed cwm and never had an issue since.

I actually just did that this morning. Could it be an SD card thing? Should I maybe reformat? I'm looking at older threads and that come up a time or two.
Thanks tho, appreciate it. Like I said, never had any problems until two weeks ago.

[Q] Has this been tried?

So up until a week ago I was running CM11, but for the past month I was having battery issues so I decided to revert back to stock to test if it was the battery or the ROM. So I flash my phone back to stock and update to 4.4.2 knowing that I still had all the tools still available in case I wanted to flash back to CM11. Now today I wanted to flash back to CM11, but I wanted to make sure the methods were still correct to flash back to CM most concerning the bootloader, and to my dismay I found out that everything changed for the worse. On the bright side I was able to root my phone but unfortunately I flashed CWM recovery so now I can't get into recovery, but I can still access my phone so its not hard bricked to the point I have to JTAG, but my first question is how do I revert back to system recovery, I made a nandroid backup before I flashed the recovery but would that still work? And my second question is are there any ROMS you can install that allow you to run a custom recovery or allow you to flash back to 4.1.2? Either way, I'm glad I decided to double checks facts before proceeding or I would've had a bricked phone.

No custom recovery and no flashing back to 4.1.2. It is safestrap only and 4.4.2 touchwiz ROMs only, of which there is only one right now. Unless you are willing to send your phone to mobile tech videos and pay them $50. They are apparently ale to revert you're phone to 4.1.2.
You should have done a little more reading of all the warnings available in the forums before going back to stock and taking the update to 4.4.2.

There is if you can find one, but I don't think it's posted anywhere. Your best bet is to just Odin flash a stock 4.4.2 rom and start over again.
