OTA update before rooting or not? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my TF101 and when I turned it on it immediately downloaded an OTA
Should I update it if I am planning to root, or does it not make a difference?

Which version do you currently have installed?
If you are planning to installing a custom ROM as well, then it does not really make a difference.
If you only want to root the tablet, I would first let the update come through and then root the tablet (unless you currently have HC and do not want to switch to ICS for any reason).

Thanks, I definitely want to flash a custom ROM, I was just wondering if there were any exploits that were patched or if it was any easier to root on the older version. But I guess this is not really an issue these days

The following methods are reported to be working with the latest Asus ROM:

I have personally used the first method few weeks ago, no problem with my tf101 and the latest ROM (9.2.1.27)

[Q] Firmware: V8.6.5.19

I have been trying to re-root my tf for quite a while now. Have had no success because I have one of the transformers that canot be rooted with Nacho (unfortunately).
I have tried all others as well and even had 3 times brought the transformer back to firmware 13 and tried to rooted.
The only time I manage to root was when I had the Firmware: V8.6.5.19 and therefore I need drastically to get that again.
If anyone have the zip I would be very glad to download it.
Thanks!
EDIT: I forgot to mention: Firmware: V8.6.5.19 WW
8.6.5.19 was pulled by Asus pretty quick because of the the exploit the devs
use to make RazorClaw work.
You can use 8.6.6.19 which is the TF101G ROM but it work for the TF101.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417006
Once root is achieved you could use OTA root keeper to save your root and update to the latest correct firmware
for your TF.
Hej Baseballfanz,
thanks for the answer, I had been on that thread and check almost all the pages and only got multiload links which of course were down.
After your suggestion I went back there and then after checking all the pages I got the link on the page 27
Thanks again. Now I am once again rooted and with revolver rom.
I tried the OTA after rooting (of course with rootkeeper) but it didnt work. First it didnt allow the OTA or the installation with the .21 firmware (force install). So I installed CWRM and flashed the firmware .21 which worked but I couldnt resore root with the rootkeeper voodoo.
I ended up giving up from Asus stock rom and went back to Revolver which is anyway my favorite custom.
Thanks again (already clicked on thanks button)
If someone (everyone) could stop using multiupload.com, then I think I might be successful in re-rooting my TF too. Same boat, I am one with a TF that nacho does not work on. And every 8.6.5.19 I find is uploaded to multiupload.com and that site will not load in the US anymore...at least not via Comcast/Xfinity.
So if someone would kindly upload it to anyplace other than multiupload.com, that would be so very VERY awesome.
Thanks!
f you wish to re-root your device from 8.6.5.21 you will need to get 8.6.6.19, not 8.6.5.19 BTW, it is very hard to find I have been looking myself to do some tests but that firmware version has been removed from Asus' site even.
Yeah Asus yanked 8.6.5.19 pretty quick aftr RazorClaw was released.

But there is no 8.6.6.xx for US transformers...not even .21 is 8.6.6.xx on the Asus site.
Yeah...8.6.6.xx is for the TF 101G only. I don't have the G version.

yes it's for the TF101G but it will work on the regular TF. You are only using it to gain root with RazorClaw.
After which you can flash a rooted stock rom made for the tf or any of the custom rom.

Just use the WW 8.6.6.19 to get root. After that flash a rooted US firmware.
I rooted my tf101 (serial bco) successfully with nachroot and adb from firmware 8.6.5.21.

Ok...Going to try this.
Just so I am clear:
Do I just need to push the file to /sdcard properly named and do the PWR/VOL + method?
Do I need to do the PWR/VOL - to Wipe Data as well?

Still no root. I followed the instructions exactly, and even several times using a variety of the other suggestions. I have both WW_epad-user-8.6.6.19.zip and EP101_SDUPATED.zip located in the Root of both my /sdcard and /Removable/MicroSD...and all I get is the Android with Yellow Triangle.
My TF101 is the B60 model, I have had it rooted before unrooting it in anticipation for the now delayed ICS update. With the US v8.6.5.21 update on it, there seems to be no way to root it.
I guess I am SOL.

So I can NVFlash that Update file or do I have to extract it and make all the .img files etc.
It would have to be an NVFlash compatible ROM.
Here's some stock ROM plus some of the custom ROM such as Prime
has NVFlash version.

I've done this already too...and still can't get Nacho or Razor methods to work and still can't get 8.6.5.19, the update still goes directly to .21.
I feel like we are going in circles here.
Am I seriously the only B60 owner with this problem? Is there not a single other US version B60 model owner that has downgraded and then successfully rooted their TF101?
NVFlash didn't work?

[UPDATE] Rooted US Transformers 9.2.1.11(US) to 9.2.1.17(US)

Typical stuff, I take no responsibility for anything that happens to your device. That being said much love to Roach2010 and KTWombley for their work which led to my insignificant contribution.
Long story short this update is for the US version of Asus Transformer TF101. This upgrade applies to those who are running stock firmware that is rooted.
If you removed any stock applications or did anything to your stock installation this will fail.
I tested this update on my own tablet and my daughters who happens to have the keyboard dock and all was good. US only but if anyone wants to forward me other packages I would be happy to add them.
Try at your own risk.

I guess i need CWM to flash this?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Can someone please post a step by step for running this update? been a while since I rooted and want ICS
thanks in advance... I rooted but left things unmodified
do I just flash the update like any other rom?
Yeah you can flash over.
I installed OTA Rootkeeper and made a backup of my root, then I flashed the zip like anything else. After I the update was finished, I went back into OTA Rootkeeper and noticed that I no longer had root so I used the app to restore my root and voila, all updated and rooted.
I flashed this via CWM and it all went well.
How do I remove the message in my notifications? Also, OTA (even with root keeper) doesn't seem to work with CWM installed.
Is there a ww version of this update?
Hi,
kookooktchoo, thanks for the info about OTA root-keeper!!! Unfortunately I didn't read the rest of your post, I too flashed this update and lost root. lucky I had installed and backed up my root using it.
thanks a lot !!!

You can still use ViperMod primetime option 1 to root after the flashing the update. Just did it myself .

Works perfect.. I did not lose root either..
Anyone know a way to get this to not check a current app? I only changed the SystemUI and cant find my backup of the original. It hangs on that. I tried the rooted+stock full version of the first ICS release but it apparently didnt blow away my ASOP SystemUI because its still failing.
No reboots or hangs so far. Good stuff.
Update the new firmware using the normal route. Still rooted after the update. No problem at all.
Worked great for me. Thanks!
The OTA kept failing on me so I tried this and it worked great.
For an 8MB update it took a little longer than I expected to flash (+5 mins).
Apparently this doesn't fix USB mounting of internal and removable storage on PC though. I was hoping it would. Guess I'll search out the separate fix. I know I saw it around here some where.
Update failed
Doesn't work for me, update says:

[Q] No Root after repair

Hey guys.
Here is my story i hope you can help me: I am from Germany and got a B8O Tab. I had rootet it with Razorclaw and installed CWM and some Custom Roms.
One Day my left headphone speaker was dead. So i had to return my tablet to Asus. I unrooted it with ViperMod. It worked perfect. I was back on stock without root and CWM. I could root again and unroot with Vipermod (tested)
Now i got my Tablet back. It wasnt configurated so i know that they had put an fresh Rom installation on it. But they did the WW 8.6.6.23 on it. NOT the DE Version.
End of the Story is, now i cannot root anymore. I tried ViperMod and Nachoroot (manuell) and both stop by the exact same point. After the second reboot "id" has to be 0 but it is something like 2000.
Now i cant root (God knows why) and cannot put the DE Version on it. I think the root doesnt work because it is an German Tab with the WW Version now.
Have someone an Idea how i can solve this problem? Just want root back so i can use custom roms again.
I'm having the issue. "vid=2000<shell> gid=2000<shell>" every time.

I thought of that too but the problem is i have an TF101G and this one doesnt have IC until now. The IC Updates are all for the Wifi only version.
But if IC is avaibled for the TF101G can i just install the German Version over the WW?

ViperMod worked before i send the transformer to Asus. I used it to get back to Stock and unroot. I tested it if i can root again and it worked perfectly. But after i get it back from Asus it has the WW Version instead of the DE (German) and now Vipermod isn't working anymore.
I think it has to do something with this WW Version but im not sure of it.
Any Ideas?
I'm having the issue. "vid=2000<shell> gid=2000<shell>" every time.
So i managed to go back to the German Version. First success!
But root still isnt working. I really dont know why.

Device does not update through OTA

This doesn't seem like a common problem, but I found a few people who got this issue.
My TF700 have been on 4.0.1 and it does not upgrade to 4.1 JB even though it has been released for a week. I have then used the custom method to force update to 10.4.4.16 - JB. However, I know 4.4.18 just came out and I am afraid it still would not update OTA.
Anyone has a solution for this??

Yup checking for update has nothing
Before I upgraded to 10.4.4.16 the device was totally stock, and it just does not update for the longest time.
Since I had updated to 10.4.4.16, I have then unlocked, rooted. No mod, no system app freeze.
Still no update notice for 10.4.4.18

Yup. Assuming you're into the stock experience and have the keyboard (thus appreciating the shortcut keys), CleanROM is eyeing you. Your 700 is behaving normally, so that's one problem out of the way.

I had something kinda weird happen just now.
I originally unlocked and rooted the moment I got the tablet, and manually installed 10.4.4.16. Everything works great.
I just finished manually updating to 10.4.4.18 and after a reboot, it said I have a system update available, which was 10.4.4.16.....
[/doublerainbowvoice] Does this mean I still got an OTA even though I'm unlocked and rooted?

Sorry man!
Looks you and me are in the same boat.
I just threw up my hands and did another factory reset last evening.

Just purchased can i root JOP40D.WW.epad-10.6.1.27.1-20130711 ?

Hi, I just purchased a TF300 from ebay (arrived this morning).. My first task was to try and root it and I've been at it all day without success. I've trawled many forums, used search bars galore and don't know what to do. I've tried Motochopper (which I now know doesn't work) along with other various apps to no avail. I've even unlocked the machine thinking that would help but no.
Obviously this wont have been rooted before so where does it leave me? What are my options? I'm rather new to android (only got my Galaxy S4 a month ago) but i'm learning quick.. just a bit frustrated as to where to go now..
any help greatly appreciated
Thanks

well first you unlock your bootloader with the app from the asus site, the use fast to install a custom recovery (twrp 2.5.0.0) the use twrp to flash the custom rom, and if you flash cromi-x it looks completely stock the only difference is if you go into settings and look at the about tablet tab then it says cromi-x in the build tab, there is a step by step guide to getting twrp installed and ill talk you through installing cromi-x if you want but it isreally easy
