Flash boot.img without PC for those on 2.20! Switch ROMs & restore backups on the go. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Flash boot.img without PC for those on 2.20! Switch ROMs & restore backups on the go.
I am one of those people that constantly likes to change ROMs. I like AOKP/CM, but sometimes I need to use the better camera on Sense based ROMs. I loved being able to restore back ups on the go, but then I updated my phone to 2.20 and lost the ability to flash boot.img from recovery. I looked around XDA and found a solution.
I verified that it sticks by going CR4.5dev -> CR4.5 -> AOKP -> CR4.5dev -> AOKP -> CR4.5dev. All worked!
You will need Open Android Terminal Emulator and a copy of your boot.img in your /sdcard partition
Open Terminal Emulator and enter:
su
dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p21
Of if you are like me and keep a folder of all of your boot.img files then add: cat source_file > dest_file.
Ex:
su
cat /sdcard/boot/boot.img_CRdev > /sdcard/boot.img
dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p21
Then reboot into recovery and restore your backup or flash a ROM!
Make sure you factory reset and wipe system if going from AOSP to Sense based ROMs.
If someone wants to make a script out of this go ahead.

Can't wait to try this, I have wanted to change roms but kept getting annoyed by having to connect to my pc.

It's so nice to finally be able to do it. I love being able to switch back and forth on the go by just keeping backups or ROMs on my phone. You can thank 18th.abn for giving me the idea to look for it and test it.

Wouldn't it be easier to pack the boot.img into a hboot zip and flash from there?
Its debatable. Developers can make a script that pushes this file to the root of the sdcard so that it can be flashed in hboot with aroma
Check out the rezound forum, for those who choose not to s off this is the method they use to flash kernels

would that command work inside of recovery from the built-in terminal?

No, when you are booted into system you can modify the boot partition
While you're in recovery you can not with the new 2.20 update

yeah..i remember it from CONROM. it places boot.img as flashable zip if phone is detected as s-on and aroma installer flashes it at the end!!

This only works with an external sd, so for the hox to do this, it would need to be in a pj83IMG.zip and put on a sd card with reader on a y-cable with a alternative power source attached.
We could just write a .sh script to dd boot img from xxx to p21........ So wen you need a diff boot image, just put the image in xxx folder, open terminal and say
su
cd /sdcard
./newboot.sh

hi guys,
just bought a AT&T One X with 2.20 firmware. Could you explain for a layperson what this means ? I had read that getting the 2.20 firmware phone meant that I could not unlock the bootloader -> which meant that I cannot flash ROMs.
Does this method mean that 2.20 firmware has all the power and ability of the older 1.85 ROMs ?

You could use whatever boot.img you wanted, but it might not work lol. I would suggest using the boot.img that comes packed with the ROM you are trying to flash.

No. You still can not root or unlock your bootloader unfortunately. This is for people (like myself) who were unlocked and ran the 2.20 RUU. We lost the ability to flash the boot.img from inside recovery so there was no way for us to flash a ROM or restore a backup away from a computer. This helps with that, so long as you can boot into your phone.

Perfect- Can we do more?
This has worked perfectly for me going from CleanROM 4.5 - CleanROM 5.0 - CM10
Any chance someone could post a similar set or terminal commands to flash radio? is that possible from terminal?

Clean Rom question for Rogers

Hey guys,
Just wondering if I install clean rom on my rogers phone if I will have all the AT&T branding? If so is there any way to remove it?
Also I have rooted and flashed my phone with cwm. How do I got about flashing roms? On my captivate I booted into recovery mode and selected install from sd card. Is there a way similar to that for this device or do I have to use the cmd promt?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
You can use clean ROM I'm pretty sure it's de branded, but I'm pretty sure you will need to get a superCID first. There's a one click method in development. As for flashing yes it is the same, but I would recommend you use TWRP in the place of CWM. You can find a flashable zip in the development section as well. Just flash TWRP through CWM and your all set. Would link the topics for you but I'm at work. Just head over to dev section it's all there. Also if you want a Rogers based ROM I'm using king cobra 1.2 and I like it. Happy hunting.

No reason to change a Rogers phone to superCID. Just flash the rom of your choice in recovery.

back in the early days of he HOX ( a whopping month ago) you had to flash a BASE before you could flash a rom. It has since been discovered we can flash kernels and boot.img in the ROM without a problem.

By chance does anyone know how to multitask on the cobra rom? I've hit the multitask button on the phone but apps don't display like they used to?
Wait just so I can get something cleared. I just bought a stock rogers phone I should...
1. Unlock bootloader via HTC Dev
2. Root
3.supercid?????
4. Relock my bootloader and flash 1.85
5. unlock boot loader and flash cwm?
6. Flash rom of choice and profit
I'd like some clarification too
I'm in the same boat. I have a Rogers 1X currently on 1.73
I have rooted the phone and supercid. But I'm curious as to how should I proceed.
What are my next steps?
1. Unlock bootloader via one-click method
2. flash cwm
3. Flash latest cleanroom?
Any help is appreciated
I have Rogers HTC One X on 1.73. I thought it was:
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Root
3. Get CWM Recovery
4. Copy Cleanrom ZIP to SD Card
5. Follow instructions on the CleanROM thread.
What is this SuperCID and relocating boo loader stuff about?
Those of us lucky enough to be AT&T customers have to trick HTC into letting us unlock our bootloaders. Supercid lets us do that. If you have a Rogers phone you don't have to worry about Supercid.

i recommend TWRP because it's officially supported and it's easy to use.
After you unlock the bootloader you can flash a recovery. being rooted doesn't matter since your going to flash a pre rooted rom right away anyways.

[Q] I hope I didn't brick my phone

I'm new to android and really hope I didn't pooch my phone.
I tried installing Jelly Bean and now can't do much of anything. I can get into bootloader and load up team windows recovery (not sure what to do in there)
When I am in fastboot and try through a command prompt adb devices doesn't list the HTC One X (Rogers, Canada)
I really am not sure what to do. I have downloaded a ton of stuff nothing seems to make a difference (HTC drivers, img and zip files..) I think it boils down to getting some direction on what troubleshooting to do with the exact files I would need to use.
flash a rom in recovery ofcourse.
adb doesnt work in hboot only fastboot. your phone is fine. you need to copy the rom zips to your sdcard. then go to install inside recovery. you can mount your sdcard inside recovery also so you can copy stuff. you should still be able to reboot the system normal and have it boot fine. unlocking and flashing recovery doesnt wipe your phone.

I didn't want to take any chances with a 3rd party rom that just so happens to have sense built in, I wanted the original OEM software. I was having troubles because I was having a hard time finding the correct RUU file to flash. Look at these file names and try and decipher them:
RUU_Evita_UL_Cingular_US_1.85.502.3_R2_Radio_0.17.32.09.12_10.86.32.08L_release_262092_signed.exe
Or
RUU_Evita_UL_Cingular_US-1.73.502.2_2FE6772699D8596307CC997452BB8D25.exe
BUT NONE OF THOSE WORKED!
But I found this: htc_one_x_RUU_2.20.502.7_att_us_08022012.exe. and it worked. At least this file name has AT&T in it...

Even if you've taken the 4.1 ota it will boot just no working touchscreen. Op is doing something wrong. Verify that you have a onexl and are flashing a ROM for the one xl then make sure to wipe cache, dalvik, system and do a factory reset in twrp. If you wipe system and are flashing a ROM for the wrong phone you will brick so make sure you have the right ROM and phone combo. After flashing the ROM boot to fastboot and fastboot flash your boot.IMG. if you do all that your ROM will boot.

Wait so you flash a ROM first , then flash the boot.img ?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Doesnt matter if you flash it before or after ...are you full wiping? Data system caches. .. and you're flashing thorugh Fastboot right Sith Fastboot flash boot boot.img ?
Yes. Well mostly to flash the flash boot img . I was using the flash image gui app , or the flash boot .img batchfile created here on xda. They both have worked in the past .

Similar problem
I've been having a similar problem but maybe even worse. After rooting my phone via onexroot.com tutorial I havent been able to install any custom roms. It says that the MD5 file is not found and "completes" the installation very quickly. I have tried the viper rom but i have tried the CM10 and AOKP JB. I have flashed boot.img via fastboot every time to no avail. Help please.I have ATT One X 2.20 hboot 1.14 twrp 2.4.1.0. Thanks.

I know this may sound silly but are you leaving the boot image in the zip file that you are placing in recovery? Extract the boot image from the zip but leave it in the zip file you are placing in twrp.

Yep, I just extract and copy the boot image over to user/downloads/onexrootattnew folder. Im starting to think that I did something wrong when rootin. I followed a tutorial online step by step and have twrp working and have superuser access. I'm not sure what else I'm doing wrong.

Place boot image on phone but not in any folder so that GUI can see it not in one x root. Place full zip file in downloads folder on phone storage. Use GUI to flash image. After flashing it will go into recovery. Use TWRP to install zip. Make sure you wipe system, cache and davlik cache before installing zip.
Hope this helps.

Sorry I'm still learning: what do u mean by use GUI to flash image. I've been fastbooting it via cmd on windows.
It's an application you can install on your phone that does the flashboot part for you. Search for " fash image gui apk " on here .

So I downloaded the flash GUI program and followed the steps via the video (thanks for that, very helpful) but after flashing the kernel (boot IMG) and hitting the recovery reboot option it didn't reboot, it didn't do anything. So I did a manual reboot into recovery and installed the zips and rebooted. I got to the Rom initiating page (this one had a unicorn) and it didn't go any further. The only other info I could offer is that I went the lazy way and emailed the boot image to myself on my comp and downloaded to my phone via the email. Not sure if that makes a difference. Any more ideas, I'm gonna try the ice cold jelly Rom and the viper xl later today.
So I just tried the viper 3.2 Rom and although it seemed to get a little further in the process, result is the same: stuck on viper logo. Only ice cold jelly left. When transferring zip files over to phone do o have to mount via twrp or can I just mount as disk drive via stock rom? At this point, unrooting and waiting for att's official JB update may be my only option. Thanks in advance for any help.

[Q] Reboot loop after JmzM4 custom kernel

Hello,
I recently unlocked my bootloader and installed the CWM recovery to install custom kernels for overclocking (my htc one mini is not rooted). So I went for the JmzM4_Kernel-09-4-13. And since I installed it I am in a F$%&/&%$ reboot loop. I already wiped the cache and dalvik cache twice but it doesn't help. I searched already for answers on google but I didn't find what needed, so I landed here.
Hope somebody can help me to get out of this reboot loop and get a normal smartphone again
Thank you for your attention
Here are the bootloader specs:

Did you flash the boot.img using flashboot from the kernel zip? also are you using jelly bean 4.2.2? because that's what it was built for.
Also there are no options to over clock using this kernel...

Thank you for your reply :good:
Yes I did flash the boot.img with flashboot, but I have android 4.3 and sense 5.5 on it. Is that maybe the problem?
A friend of me said that if I flash an incompatible kernel on my device, it would be dead. Is that true? I don't think so because I still have acess to the bootloader and CWM recovery .
shouldn't brick your phone, but your gonna need to flash a kernel compatible with 4.3. There isn't one in this forum, but if you ask one of the rom devs on here really nicely they may provide a compatible kernel from one of their rom releases. Else your gonna have to re flash your rom..

And how do I find the original/stock kernel for htc one mini 4.3 ?
Can I install HTC one kernels or are the two phones completely different?
I already searched on the net for htc one mini kernels. There is almost nothing !!!!!

there are NO 4.3 kernels as of yet. I'm saying you need ask a dev to make you one,but I doubt they'll do it unless you ask really really nicely. Your most likely going to have to flash a whole rom..
AND NO HTC ONE AND HTC ONE MINI A VERY DIFFERENT. DO NOT USE ANY KERNEL UNLESS IT'S MADE FOR THE ONE MINI. OR YOU MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE.

ok, I think I will go for the second option: I will flash a rom.
So here my question: What kind of rom do I have to flash, to come out of the bootloop?
I am a beginner in this kind of thing so please explain it to me step by step.

Personally I would only recommend the one I am currently using, as I haven't tried any others except WWE Stock 4.2.2 by trigger, which is the base of what I'm using, which is Magio R3 with the JMZ Kernel. I used the guide below which worked without problems. BUT BEFORE YOU DO MAYBE MAKE A POST ABOUT CHANGING FROM 4.3 TO 4.2.2 JUST BECAUSE I AM NO EXPERT, AND I'M UNSURE IF THERE COULD BE ISSUES WITH THIS? THOUGH I THINK IT SHOULD BE FINE.
Else stick with the 4.3 Stock ROM by Trigger though this is untested by me. Also skip the kernel installation if using the 4.3 ROM.
THE GUIDE:
Ecstacy42 said:
Don't do it if you don't feel comfortable.
1. Unlock your bootloader here. Select "All Other Supported Models" and follow the instructions.
2. Download the Rom, Kernel, and a recovery, verify the MD5 checksums, and then copy the rom and kernel zips to your internal SD card. I'd recommend one of the WWE versions as they don't have a lot of the AT&T bloat.
3. Boot into the bootloader (it says how in the guide showing you how to unlock your bootloader)
4. Select fastboot, plug your phone into your computer.
5. Type "fastboot devices" to make sure it's connected, then type "fastboot flash recovery whateverrecoveryyouused.img".
6. Boot into recovery. Make a backup. Then wipe system, data, cache, and dalvik cache.
7. Reboot into fastboot, then type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" using the boot.img from the Rom you downloaded.
8. Reboot into recovery and install the rom zip using TWRP/ClockworkMod.
9. Reboot into fastboot and type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" using the boot.img from the kernel.
10. Reboot into recovery and flash the kernal zip.
11. Start up your phone, if you flashed a DeOdexed Rom it'll take a little while to boot up.
I'm not sure if you have to flash the boot.img from the rom, then flash it, then flash the boot.img from the kernel and then flash it, but it's best to follow the directions and avoid potentially causing problems.

ok thank you,
but when I have the rom for my htc one mini, how do I place it in the main storage ( as a zip ). It can boot properly and reboots before my computer can detect it.
And is this Magio r3 rom compatible with the htc on mini? On the website it is shown that it is for htc one XL. And it also says that the recovery has to be the TWRP recovery and I have the CWM recovery.
Thank you for your answer. :good:

Everything you need is here on the XDA, "HTC One mini" section. ONLY USE ROMS WHICH ARE SPECIFICALLY FOR THE "ONE MINI". NO OTHER. EVER.
Just use this one it's 4.3 stock. You flash it as a ZIP from either CWM or TWRP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575766
And read the OP!
Also once this is working. DON'T FLASH YOUR PHONE EVER AGAIN. YOU CLEARLY HAVEN'T READ UP ENOUGH AND DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PHONE. No offense but do you really want a $500 paper weight?

But How do I flash my rom.zip? I cannot flash it from fastboot because it shows an error message in the cmd : Failed(remote: data length is too high). How do I get this $%&%&## file on my recovery or how do I flash it directly from my computer. I already searched the web on how do I do this. But no detailed or specific answer to my problem.
Please explain it to me step by step again :good:

I tried adb push but the cmd didn't reconize it. It says (from german, I try to translate it) : the order adb push is either wrong writen or it couldn't be found. So how do I use or reactivate adb push ? or maybe there is another way to push the file in the htc ( for example with a program ).
Thanks in advance
