[Q] Reboot loop after JmzM4 custom kernel - HTC One Mini

Hello,
I recently unlocked my bootloader and installed the CWM recovery to install custom kernels for overclocking (my htc one mini is not rooted). So I went for the JmzM4_Kernel-09-4-13. And since I installed it I am in a F$%&/&%$ reboot loop. I already wiped the cache and dalvik cache twice but it doesn't help. I searched already for answers on google but I didn't find what needed, so I landed here.
Hope somebody can help me to get out of this reboot loop and get a normal smartphone again
Thank you for your attention
Here are the bootloader specs:

Did you flash the boot.img using flashboot from the kernel zip? also are you using jelly bean 4.2.2? because that's what it was built for.
Also there are no options to over clock using this kernel...

Thank you for your reply :good:
Yes I did flash the boot.img with flashboot, but I have android 4.3 and sense 5.5 on it. Is that maybe the problem?
A friend of me said that if I flash an incompatible kernel on my device, it would be dead. Is that true? I don't think so because I still have acess to the bootloader and CWM recovery .

shouldn't brick your phone, but your gonna need to flash a kernel compatible with 4.3. There isn't one in this forum, but if you ask one of the rom devs on here really nicely they may provide a compatible kernel from one of their rom releases. Else your gonna have to re flash your rom..

And how do I find the original/stock kernel for htc one mini 4.3 ?
Can I install HTC one kernels or are the two phones completely different?
I already searched on the net for htc one mini kernels. There is almost nothing !!!!!

there are NO 4.3 kernels as of yet. I'm saying you need ask a dev to make you one,but I doubt they'll do it unless you ask really really nicely. Your most likely going to have to flash a whole rom..
AND NO HTC ONE AND HTC ONE MINI A VERY DIFFERENT. DO NOT USE ANY KERNEL UNLESS IT'S MADE FOR THE ONE MINI. OR YOU MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE.

ok, I think I will go for the second option: I will flash a rom.
So here my question: What kind of rom do I have to flash, to come out of the bootloop?
I am a beginner in this kind of thing so please explain it to me step by step.

Personally I would only recommend the one I am currently using, as I haven't tried any others except WWE Stock 4.2.2 by trigger, which is the base of what I'm using, which is Magio R3 with the JMZ Kernel. I used the guide below which worked without problems. BUT BEFORE YOU DO MAYBE MAKE A POST ABOUT CHANGING FROM 4.3 TO 4.2.2 JUST BECAUSE I AM NO EXPERT, AND I'M UNSURE IF THERE COULD BE ISSUES WITH THIS? THOUGH I THINK IT SHOULD BE FINE.
Else stick with the 4.3 Stock ROM by Trigger though this is untested by me. Also skip the kernel installation if using the 4.3 ROM.
THE GUIDE:
Ecstacy42 said:
Don't do it if you don't feel comfortable.
1. Unlock your bootloader here. Select "All Other Supported Models" and follow the instructions.
2. Download the Rom, Kernel, and a recovery, verify the MD5 checksums, and then copy the rom and kernel zips to your internal SD card. I'd recommend one of the WWE versions as they don't have a lot of the AT&T bloat.
3. Boot into the bootloader (it says how in the guide showing you how to unlock your bootloader)
4. Select fastboot, plug your phone into your computer.
5. Type "fastboot devices" to make sure it's connected, then type "fastboot flash recovery whateverrecoveryyouused.img".
6. Boot into recovery. Make a backup. Then wipe system, data, cache, and dalvik cache.
7. Reboot into fastboot, then type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" using the boot.img from the Rom you downloaded.
8. Reboot into recovery and install the rom zip using TWRP/ClockworkMod.
9. Reboot into fastboot and type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" using the boot.img from the kernel.
10. Reboot into recovery and flash the kernal zip.
11. Start up your phone, if you flashed a DeOdexed Rom it'll take a little while to boot up.
I'm not sure if you have to flash the boot.img from the rom, then flash it, then flash the boot.img from the kernel and then flash it, but it's best to follow the directions and avoid potentially causing problems.

ok thank you,
but when I have the rom for my htc one mini, how do I place it in the main storage ( as a zip ). It can boot properly and reboots before my computer can detect it.
And is this Magio r3 rom compatible with the htc on mini? On the website it is shown that it is for htc one XL. And it also says that the recovery has to be the TWRP recovery and I have the CWM recovery.
Thank you for your answer. :good:

Everything you need is here on the XDA, "HTC One mini" section. ONLY USE ROMS WHICH ARE SPECIFICALLY FOR THE "ONE MINI". NO OTHER. EVER.
Just use this one it's 4.3 stock. You flash it as a ZIP from either CWM or TWRP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575766
And read the OP!
Also once this is working. DON'T FLASH YOUR PHONE EVER AGAIN. YOU CLEARLY HAVEN'T READ UP ENOUGH AND DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PHONE. No offense but do you really want a $500 paper weight?

But how do I flash the odex rom?
I already tried to flash the whole zip file with fastboot, but the file is too big. the cmd says Failed(remote:data lenght is too large).
So how do I bring this rom to recovery from my computer?
Thank you for your answer.

But How do I flash my rom.zip? I cannot flash it from fastboot because it shows an error message in the cmd : Failed(remote: data length is too high). How do I get this $%&%&## file on my recovery or how do I flash it directly from my computer. I already searched the web on how do I do this. But no detailed or specific answer to my problem.

[Q] I hope I didn't brick my phone

I'm new to android and really hope I didn't pooch my phone.
I tried installing Jelly Bean and now can't do much of anything. I can get into bootloader and load up team windows recovery (not sure what to do in there)
When I am in fastboot and try through a command prompt adb devices doesn't list the HTC One X (Rogers, Canada)
I really am not sure what to do. I have downloaded a ton of stuff nothing seems to make a difference (HTC drivers, img and zip files..) I think it boils down to getting some direction on what troubleshooting to do with the exact files I would need to use.
flash a rom in recovery ofcourse.
adb doesnt work in hboot only fastboot. your phone is fine. you need to copy the rom zips to your sdcard. then go to install inside recovery. you can mount your sdcard inside recovery also so you can copy stuff. you should still be able to reboot the system normal and have it boot fine. unlocking and flashing recovery doesnt wipe your phone.

Even if you've taken the 4.1 ota it will boot just no working touchscreen. Op is doing something wrong. Verify that you have a onexl and are flashing a ROM for the one xl then make sure to wipe cache, dalvik, system and do a factory reset in twrp. If you wipe system and are flashing a ROM for the wrong phone you will brick so make sure you have the right ROM and phone combo. After flashing the ROM boot to fastboot and fastboot flash your boot.IMG. if you do all that your ROM will boot.

So I downloaded the flash GUI program and followed the steps via the video (thanks for that, very helpful) but after flashing the kernel (boot IMG) and hitting the recovery reboot option it didn't reboot, it didn't do anything. So I did a manual reboot into recovery and installed the zips and rebooted. I got to the Rom initiating page (this one had a unicorn) and it didn't go any further. The only other info I could offer is that I went the lazy way and emailed the boot image to myself on my comp and downloaded to my phone via the email. Not sure if that makes a difference. Any more ideas, I'm gonna try the ice cold jelly Rom and the viper xl later today.
So I just tried the viper 3.2 Rom and although it seemed to get a little further in the process, result is the same: stuck on viper logo. Only ice cold jelly left. When transferring zip files over to phone do o have to mount via twrp or can I just mount as disk drive via stock rom? At this point, unrooting and waiting for att's official JB update may be my only option. Thanks in advance for any help.

That screen is supposed to appear once you've installed a custom recovery. But then it should go into recovery. If its hanging on that screen, then yes there is a problem.
You haven't provided nearly enough info. What firmware version were you on before you unlocked the bootloader (2.20, 3.18, etc.)? What method did you use to unlock the bootloader? How did you try to install recovery? Post links to what you used, so we can see if they were the right versions.

If you're not even sure you used the right one, are you sure you really wanna be doing this? I mean, you're doing things to your phone that can really screw it up (brick it) if you don't know what you're doing. Do you know how to use fastboot?

Yea I want to do it. I know how to use fastboot but this is kinda new to me. All the other android phones didn't require so many steps.
TL;DR - I just want to root my HTC and install recovery/customs roms.
All phones are different. Just because you rooted others before doesnt mean they'll all be the same.
Download twrp 2.3.3.1 and flash it then wipe cache with fastboot then select recovery and flash a Rom.
Before rooting a new phone, you should always read the stickies or at least the faq to find out any quirks or steps that need to be taken to achieve what you want.
I've rooted a Sony Xperia, an evo 3d and this one xl. They were all different.

When I try to flash a recovery this is what I get.
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
C:\One_X_ATT_All-In-One_Kit_v3.0\data>
Using the HTC One X Toolkit.
Edit: Flashed the TWRP 2.3.1.1 through fastboot in cmd. Now it's just hanging at the HTC splash. Should I keep waiting?
Have you tried to boot into an OS or into recovery?

Also remember with CM10 or other AOSP roms you will need to downgrade your touchscreen firmware. And before you do that you have to supersu and s-off. To be honest I went through all this over the past two days, and when i got to the stage your at (rooted, unlocked, custom recovery) I went with RageXL (a sense rom) and got my phone to a stable state, crossed my fingers and did the super-su by hand, then s-off. It was much easier and less stressful once I had a stable and working phone again.

Agreed. OP shouldn't be doing anything to the phone they are not completely sure of. Failure to follow this bit of advice can turn your phone a very expensive paperweight.
Also, be aware that with S-on, you need to extract boot.img and flash from fastboot every time you flash a ROM. Failure to do this is a very common cause for being stuck on the boot (HTC logo) screen after flashing a ROM.
I was able to flash a rom through Recovery. I flashed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2328822. Think I will stick with it for awhile. Any other ROMS compatible with 2.20?

all, but if you're s-on you need to fastboot flash boot boot.img whereby boot.img is extracted from the rom you're flashing.
Yes. I meant to say that I had used fastboot to flash this rom. Satisfied now. Think I this is all I will need for now.
Thanks for the help everyone. Much appreciated.

Don't use S4 specific ROMs. Use ROMs built for S3 or C2

i already get one step forward.
i used the correct roms and the actual twrp
now, everytime i flash a new rom, i need to extract the boot.ini from the rom,
and flash it manual via fastboot flash boot boot.img Oo
then the rom boots normaly and runs stable so far Oo
anyone knows the problem and/or a solution?

Oh.. that's a necessary step to flash boot.img from the Rom.zip ... It's the kernel.
Unless you are S-OFF, you are gonna need to flash the kernel every time you flash a ROM.

Do a research on S-OFF before doing it. It poses some problems too.

Question about Cyanogenmod 11

Hello guys,
I've been looking around for CM11 for my HTC One X+.
Now I've found the original CM11 on their website for HOX+, but there is one little question I got about this.
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=enrc2b
That's the link where I've found it by the way.
There is no boot.img download, how safe is it to just install the ROM? In my opinion it isn't.
So let me know what you guys think.

Its on the official website, and It should work. Make a backup though.
The boot.img download isn't there because the boot.img is probably inside the .zip.
So open the zip and you'll have your boot.img.

Yeah, already found it.
Thanks though.
One small question, if I'm going to put the .zip file on my SD card I can just leave the boot.img in the .zip right?

Oh okay, you will need to flash the boot.img alone then as flashing the ROM zip won't just work. So boot into bootloader, and flash the new boot.img you had extracted from the .zip
Once yo uhave flashed the .img boot into recovery mode and perform a gull wipe, including cache. Once done simply flash the zip and reboot.
First reboot takes a bit so be patient. I also recommend you getting a band backup in case.

If you're coming from a Sense ROM you can't just flash the zip without flashing the boot.img. It wouldn't even boot. And sometimes it boots but without mobile signal or WiFi signal.
So just place the zip on your sdcard, take the boot.img out of the zip on your computer.. Then boot into bootloader and connect it to the computer using USB then type
"fastboot flash boot boot.img"
Then "fastboot erase cache"
(you must have fastboot installed and configured on your computer)
Then boot into recovery and flash the zip file and gapps. Oh don't forget a wipe is mandatory if you're coming from sense ROM. But if you're coming from an AOSP ROM it's recommended but you can go without wiping. I flashed cyanogen over paranoid android without wiping data and had no issues at all. But I wiped the system partition.
And you cannot S-OFF an HTC One X+.. If it's S-ON then it stays that way. Only a few amount of people have S-OFF on their HOX+.
Oh and I don't think TWRP recovery is compatible with CM11 on HOX+.. So I recommend you flash philz recovery. Flash it by using the fastboot command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
(recovery.img should be replaced with the name of the recovery you downloaded)
It doesn't take a lot of time. I change ROMs almost every week.
Please press the thanks button if I helped!
