Ideas for expandable notifications - Android General

Hi all! Android 4.1 included the awesome possibility for expandable notifications, but not that many apps have been updated to use them yet. So I just wanted to hear some ideas of how you would want to use them (I'm no developer, so it's not like I'm gonna do anything about it, but if you're lucky someone might use it )
There is one use I think Google should have included, and that is making the "USB is connected" notification expandable so we could mount USB storage without having to open a new window. I really wish the CM team or someone else could include it.
There are also the obvious use of expandable facebook notifications, but the facebook is so terrible that they should try to make it usable before adding new feautures. It will probably require a complete rewrite like the iOS version got.

Apps moving to SD card.

After waiting all this time for Froyo I assumed that once it had arrived all of my memory issues would vanish. That has not been the case as many (large) apps (e.g. Google Maps) do not offer the option to move. Any idea when developers are going to update their apps to make use of this feature? Thanks
Bit of a silly (well more retarded) question that. There are 1000s of software developers and 100,000s+ apps out there. How is someone going to answer and give development updates on every app and if/when they will support new features..
it is indeed the one major disappointment I have with my Desire, maybe even enough to get the Desire HD
You could temporarily delay memory problems a little more by using SetInstallLocation 2 (search for it on XDA) so you can move apps to SD even if they have not been updated but even that does not help a great deal as a large part of every app and it's data still remain on the internal memory.
Or root and install a custom ROM which gives options to move the complete app to SD, but I've been holding off because I don't want to ruin my excellent experience by continuous amazement of new ROMs, flashing ROMs multiple times a day and waiting for new ROMs as I did with my WiMo phone...

Click to collapse
Silly ok, retarded....slightly offensive.... The question was a little open ended as I'm not a Google application developer and I was inviting those who may be in the know to offer a positive contribution based on their area of focus. For example a developer working around Google Maps may know when in the software development program Maps will be able to offer an SD card install because that affects their own development?
To assist further besides Maps at 9.6MB these are other apps I have installed that I would like to see on my SD card:
Adobe Flash Player 10.1 (12.4MB)
ASTRO (file management - 4.2MB)
Facebook (official app - 9.3MB)
Gmail (3.7MB)
Handcent SMS (4.6MB)
Vlingo Voice (4.2MB)
XDA (2MB)
These 8 apps amount to 50MB of internal memory. If anyone is developing around these and knows if SD card installation is coming soon can you post asap as I will contact the developers next week. Thanks.

[DEV-Discussion] CM7.1 Based "MP3" Rom (WIFI AND APPS ONLY)

I am in the process of researching the best way to take my old 3g slide and build a very light bootable ROM from CM source for mp3/media, wifi & apps only. I figured instead of trying to figure this out on my own maybe I could open this thread for discussion.
The idea is to take a CM supported device and tweak it into a mp3 player with wifi and the apps market but remove/disable all phone related activity to preserve battery and have the phone look, feel and function as a media device and not as a phone. This ROM should have no phone.apk, should not have an active radio...but preserve wifi, media playback and the app market.
The UI should look like an MP3 Player!
I have a few ideas on how to achieve this but I wonder if I am making harder than need be. I would really like to hear unique/fresh ideas, potential problems and general advice from the community. I will keep this post up to date with ideas and status and eventually it will serve as a guide.
So lets here it;
How you would go about doing this?
What can be removed?
What needs to stay?
etc....?
Ashamed there have been no replies. This is something I have been looking for, for a while.

[ROM] Pipo Max S2 Stock English Firmware tweaked by mrsaccess

I got my S2 on Tuesday and thought that the default firmware had a few shortcomings. Hence I took the stock English firmware and tweaked it to my needs.
Maybe you will find my ROM useful too.
So, what I changed:
Enlarged the data partition to 2.5GiB. I did this for two reasons. Obviously one is so we can get more space for apps. The other is that inside the /data partition are not only stored apk files, but the application's data files (which get written and read frequently). When a partition on a flash disk gets full, it also gets slow. So hopefully with 2.5GiB you will always have enough free space to keep performance up.
Rooted and the new, open source Superuser included.
Replaced the default launcher with the latest Nova Launcher.
Included Titanium Backup.
Changed the read ahead of the flash memroy to 1024KiB from the default 128KiB. While there isn't an overall best setting, I feel that this helps a lot with Chrome, which had huge delays while trying to load a page from its cache.
Changed the default io_scheduler to deadline. it gives better responsiness.
Default notification ringtone changed to something that won't cause heart attacks.
I added proper OTG support. Our tablet supported usb devices only on the OS level and not on the Android apps' level. So while a hardware keyboard would work, camera tethering with DSLR Controller wouldn't. Maybe Pipo did that because the tablet's usb system isn't solid. USB OTG doesn't work always, but at least it always works after a reboot for me and it is awesome to control my DSLR from the tablet.
Added support for cifs (smb).
Removed some apps and widgets which I think aren't that useful.
You can flash it with RKBatchTool. The first boot will take a bit more time until it gets to the launcher screen.
There may be some S2 tablets with a newer front camera module. If that's your case, your front camera may not work.

Disclaimer: If you break it, you keep it. I won't take responsibility for broken tablets.
I got CWM on my Pipo s2. I can install the ROM through there, yes?
Also, think we can see CM 10 on it anytime soon?
This ROM can only be flashed with the official tools, it doesn't support CWM, nor it installs it. If you flash it, you will lose CWM.
As for CM, I don't think we will ever see it. Chinese vendors do not give much information or any source code, so it is practially impossible to do a port.
Some guy started working on a CM port for RK3066 devices, but as far as I know he hadn't much success other than a very alpha rom for his device (not the S2).
Ah I see. Well thank you very much for providing this ROM! Is there any way you can provide a short step by step tutorial? I've downloaded the rkbatchtool but alittle unsure of how to proceed.
Great ROM .....Many Thanks For This Great ROM .... Now Downloading .. Please Check My PM And Please Reply ......
New dl links
hi mrsaccess, still possible to get new links for the custom S2 rom ? thx in advance.

Help with cheap, old, crappy tablet.

Hi guys, I've got a nice little project for y'all
Like the title says, I have a crappy, old Chinese tablet (it was low specced back when I got it like 6 years ago so you do the math...) and I recently decided to mess with it because, why not? Anyway, specs are (from the top of my head) allwiner cpu (1.7 iirc), 512 mb ram, and 4 gb internal space. Yes, 4 of which less than a gig is available.
What I've done so far:
- root
- put in a micro SD (class 10)
- linked most apps (link2sd)
- frozen a couple of apps
- changed default launcher and browser to "lightweight" ones... (not sure about that though...)
I'd love it if you could help me get this POS to work as best as it can.
I'm looking to keep it as a a whatsapp and outlook client. With the occasional youtube video here and there and MAYBE as a chromecast device.
I'm looking for a TINY launcher (size AND footprint), same with a keyboard.
Also, I'd like to know which services and apps I could freeze or even remove without crippling the device (like I said, All I need it to do is whatsapp and outlook.)
Currently running arrow launcher (microsoft) which is as light as a car btw... and stock gboard keyboard (which is obviously very heavy on resources) and I'm almost positive it is running android 4.4.
And although the device works KINDA well I'd like to not have to wait for it to open the apps and for the keyboard to appear etc...
Sadly there are no custom roms available (obviously since not even the people who designed and produced this tablet know of its existence..)Any ideas would be very appreciated.
Thanks guys!
Oh, almost forgot. By any chance are there any alternative light weight clients to either whatsapp or outlook?
Thanks again.

A little help for an oldschooler excepting the future would be much appreciated

Hats off to everyone on this forum. It's been awhile since I been on here and I am happy to see it still going strong.
I am new to the S8+ and new to modding in 2019. I haven't messed around with this stuff since the "getting the evo to work on boost" days. I am looking for some advise/recommendations on what to choose as far as roms, etc., from the gate from someone who may have had an experience in what I'm trying to achieve rather than going through hundreds of rom post to find the answer I'm looking for. I stepped away from "smart" phones for awhile and came back only when I found out I could lock them down as much as possible using programs like bk disabler (rip). Even root at the time didn't list the "apps in the background" (if you know what I mean) for me to edit or disable them.
I am looking to root (if needed anymore) my device and install an ultra slim/lite rom, no extra apps on it that don't need to be there, especially social media apps. Not sure if roms still come with a separate gaps install option but not having them is fine as well as I will not be signing into any account on my phone and will only want to use youtube as far as the only goog service used, so i wont be able to use any of them anyway besides tube (unless of course there is now a way to use maps and such without signing in?). If theres such a rom out there of course it would need to be stable. I do not want android 9 as none of the apps I actually use (like bk disabler/acr/etc) work with pie from what I have read. Goog wants all the tracking to themselves now I guess, hence why I am looking for a rom that is as slim as possible. I just want to make calls, text, browse the web and use the tube without having all kinds of accounts and sign ups for any of it. I am really tired of big tech but going back to a black and white nokia in 2019 is not an option anymore.
So a few questions I have would be.. Whats the best root process? I see Odin is still a thing so which version should I be using, also which kernel should I be using? Are different roms still based off different kernels, if so which is better? And lastly what rom should I choose or which rom creator is now the person to look out for?
I know I'm oldshool at this point so please bare with me on these questions. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
