Need some help with autofocus - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I want to know if I am the only one who is having trouble with the camera autofocus.
Most of the time it won't focus correctly even after suggesting the target area.
It will start doing autofocus and then a small flick is heard and it jumps back to the blur view.
So I have to keep selecting the focus area and around my 10th try it finally focus correctly. I wish I could manual focus...
What is going on?

I haven't noticed that at all. Could be the autofocus module is broken. Or a software issue. You haven't mentioned if you are rooted, custom ROM or anything. So a re-flash or a factory reset may or may not help, if its a software issue. Also make sure the lens is clean, as it being dirty might interfere with the autofocus function.
If you haven't already, you might try the camera option "Touch to capture" and see if that helps. It will automatically (focus and) take the photo when you tap an area on the screen. Not sure if that will yield better results for you or not, but its worth a try.
Also, the "Face detection" option works really well to focus on faces (usually on by default). But of course, that isn't going to help if you are taking pictures of something other than people.

I also have this issue, but with a One S. When you touch a really close area to focus on, it focuses, goes click and focuses out again. It's not just the One XL. I think I might send it to HTC, but tbh it's too much of a hassle.

No flash or tons or whatsoever. Using the latest update.
Lense is clear, I'll see if I can exchange it if a hard reset wont fix it.
Thank you.

My One X seems to auto focus quit a bit when using face recognitio

That was happening with mine one time. It occurred when I was trying to take a picture of a picture on a table. There was heavy light source from the left and my camera could not focus in. I turned by back to the light source and it focused just fine.
I chalked it up to lighting. Lighting can ruin a professionally taken photo, lol, so I'm sure it can play games with our phones.
Anyways, just a thought.

Same issue when I'm close to the object I'm snapping.

Clearly it's a normal issue then.
So... what should we do?
What are the possibilities of releasing a manual focus?

Also have the exactly. It's a exactly as you described.

Folks have mentioned trouble taking pics when the subject is up close (macro type shots) which seems common for many cameras, especially depending in light. You didn't mention if that was your specific problem. If your phone is having trouble focusing with ALL shots, I'd say that's not normal.
I don't think such a thing as "manual focus" is possible with camera phones. It's not like an SLR, where there is a lens ring to rotate to change focus. All camera phones and point-and-shoot cameras have some type of auto focus, AFAIK.

Make sure the spot you want to focus on has good high contrast texture for camera to work on. AF on phones are contrast detection focus only. So, if you ask it to focus on something with very little contrast, it won't work. For example, to focus on a person's face, you need pick the eyes, not the smooth face texture. Also, if you do close focus macros, switch camera to that mode. The auto selection (the default setting) may not work correctly.

Issue still there even on macro. Kinda sucks that you can't just lock it in based on what is seen on the preview.

I was having a frustrating experience trying to take close up of a mantis in good light. I would tap to indicate focus, camera would whir into focus then snap out of focus.
It's annoying to me that there isn't focus confirmation... The target designator doesn't change color (red or green) not is there and audible indication of successful focus.
Has anyone tried the sense 4.1 camera?

1.Starting the application into a black screen is a bit - distasteful and not user friendly. Add the buttons that you have when pressing menu here.
2. The Plumb and Level indicators are a bit hard to get right, you should probably think about over laying a set of arrows to tell the user how they need to move to get level and plumb.
3. Typical camera uses the trackball to snap the picture instead of menu or a screen tap (at least on our heros) This would make it more fluid.
4. Not sure how you are storing/retrieving GEO information, but its wrong...at least for me it is
5. Just in my office - it seemed like one picture would have a different light saturation than another frame in the picture.
6. Your stitching of the pictures seems like it has a VERY low error tolerance, and you might try looking at other ways of matching and stitching pieces together so they are seamless.
7. After you have one panorama, instead of showing it at the beginning, have a gallery button, this way they can come into a screen of buttons and actually navigate with out having to use hard keys.
The above was meant to be constructive - please don't take offense, I think you have a good starting point with the app. If you need help with any of it let me know, I have a pretty decent Java/Android background, just no time to make my own apps.

I didn't understand the difference between the two different options for creating a panoramic pic (I don't remember what they were called, manage and auto I think)
I also didn't understand the point of levels
Also it would be nice when the stitching occurs if the app looked for overlap and then removed the overlapping parts of the pic.
Another suggestion would be that when you take a pic that is part of the panoramic shot that you leave it on screen and then overlay the camera view over it so you can better line up and tell where the next shot should be.

HOX Camera focus issue

Hello, I was trying to take a picture today and noticed that when I touched where I wanted it to focus, it would focus correctly then quickly go back out of focus. Does anyone have a fix or solution for this?

I've looked around for solutions to this as well but there really isn't a fix for it yet. I read somewhere to go to the Camera Settings and uncheck "Video Stabilization" in the Video Options and uncheck "Face Detection" in the Camera Options. I'm not sure if its a placebo effect or anything but it seemed to help for me.
i had this issue while trying to record a video.
it would focus then go out of focus for a second, then refocus.
disabled all that stuff and i havnt noticed it.
I've had this issue, it's due to low light. Set you camera to low light mode or brighten up the scene.

Camera App with Manual Focus?

I just recently purchased some of the camera lenses from Photojojo, and they all work pretty well on my Nexus 4. I'm having some problems with focusing them well, however, especially the Macro lens. Basically, what happens is I tap on the object, and it goes through the little autofocus loop, and halfway through I see the PERFECT focus, and the it just continues and goes back to unfocused! Super frustrating, because I know that I can get the perfect picture, but I just can't get the object to come into a clear view.
So, does anyone know of an app that can do manual focus? Because I know it's not a hardware limitation that I can't get a clear picture. I can see that it gets very clear halfway through the focus loop. I just need a way to manually adjust the focus so I can KEEP that clear view.
Thanks guys!
Bump!

It drives me crazy when it almost focuses on something and then apparently can't fully focus so it just goes back to being really unfocused. I would like to be able to take a slightly out of focus picture rather than not at all because it's too blurry to see anything

Hey if it is a close up picture then find something to focus on (your hand perhaps) and move the camera until it succesfully locks on when pushed. Then (with your finger on the shutter button) move your phone to get your object in view and release shutter.
Also if the focus is a very close one you might want to just try the macro setting on the focus mode selection.
There aren't as many focuses available with manual focus as one might think.

Just got a N5, camera disappointing

Hey All,
Just got a N5 and I'm a bit disappointed with the camera. Seems like this issue isn't new, but the camera has a really tough time autofocusing and even tap to focus.
I saw that there was a fix for older versions, but is there any update in 4.4.4?
Just as a curious note: most of the custom roms have this problem or not?
Thank you,
-Siroes
If you are disappointed with Nexus 5's camera performance, you should consider selling it away and get a phone with a better camera..
Agreed. If after 4.4.2 you think the camera is disappointing you must be a professional photographer. I'd highly recommend a Nokia WP as a phone camera or a quality camera.
Using Google Camera on 4.4.4 has a pretty decent shutter speed and also using different dalvik patches can increase the speed.
The camera works amazing when it does focus, but it takes quite a while sometimes. I never used 4.4.2, so I can't speak of that experience...
Just wanted to see if anyone else had similar issues.

I personally came from S4 than sold it to buy Nexus 5. Than I picked up note 3 but with bootloader being locked I said F U at&t and just purchased yet again another Nexus 5. Already rooted running Android L preview . I can care less about the camera like the other guys on here said I'm no professional photographer lol.

install google camera from playstore. better focus
Is this with or without HDR+? Without HDR on, I find 4.4.4 with the Google Camera will focus pretty quickly. With HDR on, it's obviously going to take a fair bit longer to take a snap.
Either you're doing it wrong or you're a professional photographer.
If you're the latter then I don't know what you're trying to do with a phone camera lol.
Camera works fine for me, better than the Note 3.

honestly, i have that and it makes very little difference. The camera quality is only good when using HDR mode which in some roms doesnt even work properly. If you are a photo takin/lovin person, this camera will be a disappointment.
A minute to focus? 60 full seconds?? I'm doubting that.
Anyway....camera phones are very cheap cameras....no phone will compare to even my 99 dollar Kodak camera.
I see comparisons with guys comparing this phone to that phone and they are all inferior to the cheapest of dedicated cameras.
If people are that concerned with getting consistently decent pics....carry a camera with you. They can be quite small and light, and will put all phone cameras to shame.
Just my 2 cents. ?
---------- Post added at 03:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:56 PM ----------
And.....if you rely on your phone camera to take your pics at a special event that you want good pics to capture the memories..... Its just silly to show up with nothing but your phone.
If it truly takes 60 seconds to focus I think you might have a problem with your hardware. Otherwise you should check out this thread if you haven't already http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...tos-post-pictures-videos-share-4-4-1-t2477920
Shouldn't take more than a couple seconds to focus unless you're moving the phone a lot. Perhaps your hand is too shakey? OIS helps but won't fix shakey hand completely.
At the worst it should take about 2-3 seconds to focus. Manage to get consistently clear pictures. If you update past 4.4.2 and still experience an issue, you've got a problem.

Thanks for that information. I ended up contacting Google Play and sent a replacement. Now it works just great, just as everyone has described.
I guess something was wrong with the hardware.

Well that will contribute to your problem, you are basically just taking a normal photo. Adjust the settings and experiment.
Also RAW photos are really easy to post process with the right software. I remember on the EVO LTE (one x) we had a RAW camera mod that I used some really cool software to post process and took really great photos with.
The RAW photos right out of the box we're very dark and not polished at all. I had to do all of that after the shot was taken.
As far as I know this is the point of RAW photos. The aperture gathers as much data as possible, and the photographer post processes that data as they see fit. Now I'm no pro at all and I could be off base, but that's my basic understanding of it.
If I get some time I'll go lurking around the old android forum I was a MOD on and see what I can find. I had an old friend and mentor on there that we collaborated on quite a bit of this stuff.
Have to adjust settings for night shots, lower/adjust iso,lower/adjust shutter speed,lower/adjust lighting

It wasn't the Exo LTE, it was the M8 with the Ultra Pixel Camera everyone was bashing.
Here's the thread I was referring to with the camera mod and post processing software.: https://androidforums.com/threads/raw-camera.854215/
You'll have to sift through the thread for goodies and info. Early Mon was a god in the early HTC days, and directly involved with getting us HTC DEV for unlocking our bootloaders. I haven't messed with any of this stuff in years, don't have enough time.
