unroot confirmation

hey all, currently have a g2x rooted with cm7, and i've been looking to unroot;
just to make sure i dont do anything stupid, i wanna run this through with you guys:
first i would flash the stock 2.3.3 ota rom for g2x
then use the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 (one click nv flasher) to get back to lg stock recovery by clicking 'flash stock recovery' (do i need to dl anything extra for this?)
then im done, correct? if i boot up, ill get all the stock rom and apps and bloatware and etc back right?

edit: how do i know which version of clockwork mod i have installed? im not sure if i did the external sd support or not...

You've gone back to a stock ROM, you've gone back to the stock recovery, but you haven't actually unrooted.
Whichever method you used to root, you should be able to use that same method to unroot.
UPDATE:
I was originally under the assumption that your 2.3.3. ROM was rooted. If it is stock you should be fine.

sorry for bump, but i read in tga_gunmans post that ppl should flash a rooted 2.3.3 rom and use superoneclick to unroot...would my method work too?

No your way would not work because the stock OTA by xboarder is rooted. Do what tga_gunman said. Flash the rom, use my unroot zip in CWM (deletes root files) and then flash the stock recovery. Busybox will still be on the phone but nobody should be looking for that.

Easiest way to confirm if your not rooted would be to install Superuser from the market. It'll tell you if the phone's not rooted.

There is an app on the market called Root Checker which is free. It will tell you if you are rooted or not.

Thanks for your help jboxer. Forgive my noob-like understanding of rooting/unrooting terminology. Hopefully you'll be able to understand what I did.
Last night I went ahead with the unrooting process on my G2X which was running Gingerbread & CM7 following this youtube video (can't post link due to noobiness: watch?v=ryGIv8KQVIE), the order that this guy goes in is:
1. Wiping all cache/user data/formatting in CWM recovery
2. Restore to a barebones stock data in CWM recovery
3. Flash to go back to Stock using OneClickRecovery
4. SuperOneClick to unroot phone
What I ended up doing was restoring my phone to the backup that I created on my sd card when first rooting my phone rather than download that zip file in the video description which is a completely fresh start.
However, whenever I flashed to go back to stock using OneClickRecovery, it gave me that total barebones fresh start where I had to completely set up my Android from the first start screen and I lost my backup. Also, when I go to unroot the phone with that zip file, I don't know how to 'install from zip' after I've lost CWM Recovery menu. So, I flashed back to CWM so I could recover my backup from my SD Card again and install the 'unroot.zip' that you linked and it ran alright and I restarted, but I still had 'SuperUser' in my App drawer telling me that I was still rooted.
I ended up calling it good last night after spending two hours on it. I left my phone rooted, with CWM recovery still on my phone, but I at least I had my backup Gingerbread image with no CM7 mod. So, my phone is functional, but I would like to complete this process of unrooting completely.
Could you perhaps give a little guidance and clarity to what I'm missing or not understanding? I'd love to unroot/flash back to stock recovery/remove all evidence of rooting AND keep my recovered backup that I have before I even started rooting my phone.

HTC One S / ATT / Updates

Hi everyone
Hope all is well.
I picked up a One S yesterday that was already rooted and unlocked for ATT. I got a message on my phone telling me that there was an update. I downloaded the file and the phone rebooted into CWM and gave me an error message and the update did not take place.
After looking around in CWM I found the download file but did not attempt to install it. My question is - if I apply the update will I lose root, and will my phone go back to being locked to T-Mobile?
I have read the development section and see that the root procedure and even the sim unlock procedure is fairly straight forward, but it would be nice to not have to do it again.

You have to have stock recovery to flash OTA updates. Your other option is to choose from one of the custom ROMS based on the new 1.84 software. You'll need to manually flash the radio update though. There's a flashable zip for the radio around the dev thread somewhere.

There is also a full Nandroid of the 1.84 update. You can copy to your SD and restore via CWM, but you will lose all of your apps and data.

Thanks guys I really appreciate all of the help. So really the only thing I will have to do if I flash a custom rom is also flash the new radio? I guess as long as the ROM I flash is compatible with the T-Mo version of the phone I will be good to go? Or will I have to unlock for ATT again?

If you use TWRP Recovery. If you use CWR, you'll need to do some tricks to install both the radio and the boot.img for whatever ROM you choose.

Yeah phone already has CWR on it when I got it. Can you have both TWRP and CWR on the phone at the same time or is it one or the other? Without going into too much detail because I am sure all the info is in the developers thread, but what "tricks' will i need to perform? I am guessing something along the lines of using adb etc?

[Q] Stock Recovery

Hi all,
I apologize if this has been answered before, but I had trouble finding it here. I am currently rooted on a stock backup, but I am running a custom recovery. I am not sure where to find the stock recovery image for my device. I am using the HTC One M8 through Verizon, and I know that the new firmware update is coming out soon, and I'd like to be able to just OTA update my phone so that I can reflash a custom recovery and install the newest VenomROM. I have flashed a custom recovery before (obviously), but I didn't know if it mattered which firmware base you are running. I read somewhere that the recovery is totally separate from the OS, and it is meant to be an alternative to booting into the OS in case of a problem, but I want to be sure. If there is a specific recovery I need to use and someone here knows where I can find it, that'd be great. I found the collection of stock recoveries, but I'm having trouble figuring out which one I need to use. Any and all help is appreciated, thanks.

It takes more than stock recovery to take the OTA. The /system has to be essentially stock. Some mods (e. g. enabling powersave) may also csuse the OTA install to fail. There is a thread with a pseudo RUU. You ought to be able to get stock recovery there.

Hi there,
I actually just used the psuedo RUU tool (I assume this is the one you are talking about? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2727831)
I just finished using this tool, but when I went to check the recovery, all I get is a big red triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. Nothing else. So, I'm guessing that recovery didn't flash properly? But I'm honestly not completely sure. I would screenshot it, but I can't do that. Any help is appreciated.
EDIT: I found out that pressing volume up and power gives more options. I assume I am all good to go now? I am still rooted, and I'm not sure if that is a problem. I am stock, s-off and rooted, but I don't have any mods installed.

You can't do anything in stock recovery except take an OTA, assuming everything else is stock. You can't do Nandroids, flash zips, etc. Looks like you have stock recovery.

Yeah I just figured out how the more options appear. I assume I'm good to go for the OTA now? I've got stock recovery, running a stock backup, s-off and I'm still rooted, but I think those are not a problem. I am not running any mods.

You should be good to go. A cautionary note, however, is that if you are rooted (even if S-OFF), it's not always advisable to take the OTA because frequently OTA's plug exploits used to secure root, etc. There was a definite difference between the original stock Verizon M8 ROM releated 3/25/14 and the minor update which followed, and some were unable (myself included) to secure stable root and/or S-OFF with weaksauce, having to acquire a license to Sunshine instead.
I intend to stick on my custom ROM and recovery and trust the developers to massage the OTA once it's out and have, literally within days if not hours, an updated ROM/firmware zip file that will more than adequately fit the bill.

That does sound pretty appealing. I've never flashed firmware before though, and I wouldn't want to mess anything up. I remember seeing on the VenomROM firmware section, the easiest way to flash new firmware is to just grab the OTA update. The other way involved using some other program that I have not used before. I am overestimating how difficult installing new firmware is?

Firmware (splash screen, radios, hboot, recovery) are "flashed" with an S-OFF handset via fastboot from the bootloader, while connected to PC. I believe (again, based upon the RUU thread I mentioned previously which you seem to have found) that it may also be possible to flash from hboot using an update.zip file (I think the M8 file is called PB06IMG.zip, but don't hold me to that --- every phone has its own such file format/name.)
ROMs and mods are typically flashed via recovery.

Okay, I may look into that. I've only seen an RUU flashed via hboot, so I'd have to look into it. At the very least though, I'd imagine someone will post the instructions on how to flash the firmware when it comes out.

Why???
I would not touch that new firmware with a 100 foot pole until the devs have figured out what it breaks!!!
I predict a flood of posts in the line of:
"I flashed back to stock to take the OTA and now weaksauce is not working - how do I get root back?"

P5113 root, recovery, rom questions

I was given the device last year and had been fairly satisfied with the performance of it. However, it has gotten laggy over the past couple weeks and a friend suggested to root and flash a rom on it. So, without any prior knowledge, I have been doing some research and browsing through the threads on this forum. I can see that there are guides but was very unsure if the methods would still work because I have noticed that most of them were last updated/edit a while ago. I know I shouldn't use the word 'latest' for doing this to a tablet that is fairly old in the market. However, it would be very helpful if someone can point me to some 'proven to work' or 'trust-worthy' guides of rooting, flashing recovery, and rom.
Also, just out of curiosity, please recommend which recovery and rom a first-timer should use if possible

these are the things you need to do before flashing a ROM.
note: -the following things may void your warranty.
-do this on your own risk.
1. HOW TO ROOT
-First install kingo root on your windows PC. Then check USB debugging .
( settings. < about device < touch build number 7times < go back and select developer options < check USB debugging.)
-Open kingo root on the PC and connect your device and connect your device to the PC. Start root and do not remove the USB cable until it says finish.
-Now you have successfully rooted your device.
2.HOW TO INSTALL A CUSTOM RECOVERY
- Go to the following link and download CLOCK WORK MOD(CWM)
LINK: https://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Select your device and install the recovery.
go into the app and install recovery .
3.BACK UP
download rom manager from playstore and do a backup( do a backup using this ap only if you are using CWM recovery.

Now the first thing you need to do is download this rom.

I was looking in the forum and someone said that I would also need to unlock the bootloader? If so, how do I do that?
Also, is there a difference between kingroot and towelroot? I saw a post in the forum here saying towelroot is fast and easy to root the tablet.

Not much difference.
Actually there is not much difference between kings root and towel root....towel root doesn't need a PC...but I have never used it so I can't assure you that it is safe.
And coming to the boot loader I don't know much about it but I didn't do anything like that before flashing a rom or rooting my tab2....

it is not necessary to unloack bootloader for tab 2 as it comes with a unlocked bootloader from stock.

Hey, it's been a while. Honestly speaking, when I first posted this thread, I didn't really have enough time to do the things so now I am finally back and trying to do it. So far, I know what recovery and rom I'm going to use with all the files downloaded and ready. Though, currently, I am still at the pre-root stage. I have read up things about kingoroot and not sure if I wanted to use it. So I looked around on the forum and wonder if Odin is still a working solution. Reading on the steps and guides, I was wondering if I need to have Kies installed?

Kies is not needed as it never helped.
You can depend on odin it is your only saviour when you are in trouble.
I think rooting with kingroot is easy as it is just connecting to your PC and cick the start button.
So just notice me when your ready.
And there is also one good news...?
Tab 2 has got marshmallow.

I have rooted the tablet. I did it with odin and twrp with flashing the updatedSuperSU zip folder.
I have tried flashing the CM12.1 rom yesterday but resulted in a boot loop. So for now, I'm just rooted and on stock rom until I or someone can find out what was the problem. I have read about the discussion with marshmallow but it seems to me that the project isn't really stable yet. From what I have researched lately, can I assume there's issue with the p51xx line of tablets? Because I saw many people having problems with p51xx and most people with the other tablets aren't having any.

You first must update your tab to jelly bean bootloader, before trying out newer roms.
Or perhaps flash stock jb firmware with odin
Whatever you choose, both is ok.

The first thing you do, is take a nandroid backup, it's very important at every step, unless you are really ready to risk. It's better to have it.
Next Read through the rom threads, clear your mind and your tab too. You must format data.
Stay on twrp 2.8.7.2. Don't go to the latest one yet.
Flash rom, wait, it will boot up.
Every tab behave differently with every rom, sure you are going to face soft reboots, on some roms it will be a lot, on some it will be less. I would suggest you try both LP and kk first.
Remember, it's better to keep this tab updated than to stay on stock. This tab 2 series has a emmc bug and staying on stock or jumping back is a risk too. I have been on kk and lp. They both have kept this tab running great and away from that bug.

Do I have to unroot first? Do you have a link to making a nandroid backup?
Edit: Oh, I looked at the link you included and it said that if I am on stock jb (4.2.2), I can skip the update bootloader part..

When you flashed the new rom, did you do a factory reset (wipe data)?

Yes, that's what I meant too, if you're on jb already, you are fine. You don't have to unroot. For making a nandroid backup, use twrp recovery, there is an option for backup, select and backup all from there, if you get into bootloop or any other problem, as long as you can get back to recovery, you can restore from there. Most rom comes pre rooted.

Yes, I cleared the top four options in recovery, and formatted data before flashing.

That's what I did. Let me just briefly summarize what I have done:
used odin with twrp
booted into recovery and made back up
cleared dalvik, cache, system, and data, formatted data
flashed update supersu, booted into system and checked root with root checker
rebooted into recovery, cleared dalvik, cache, system, and data, formatted data again
flashed cm12.1 and gapps, rebooted but ran into bootloop at splash screen
rebooted into recovery and restored back up
So I'm rooted and on stock 4.2.2 currently.

Dazed and confused

Hello All,
I can usually figure most things out....this time I'm kind of stumped. Verizon just sent me a replacement M8. I'm running Viper One on my old one so I figured I would get after rooting/ S-off this new one.
I was able to load Kingroot and Sunshine. Worked through that and achieved root/S-off. Installed the latest TWRP and attempted to load the latest SuperSu. I can not get it too flash. I have tried flashing in revovery (TWRP) tried it in Flashify.
Can someone help me out with the commands to flash in fastboot. I have been searching but can't find the thread I'm looking for.
Ohhh....Just a heads up....I went into My Backup Pro and froze KingRoot. I don't advise doing this. Just lost root and now I can not get back into My Backup Pro to unfreeze King Root LOL

I can usually figure most things out....this time I'm kind of stumped. Verizon just sent me a replacement M8. I'm running Viper One on my old one so I figured I would get after rooting/ S-off this new one.
I was able to load Kingroot and Sunshine. Worked through that and achieved root/S-off. Installed the latest TWRP and attempted to load the latest SuperSu. I can not get it too flash. I have tried flashing in revovery (TWRP) tried it in Flashify.

If you are S-OFF, all you need to do is flash the ROM of your choice in a custom recovery.
The ROM comes pre-rooted.

Why would I do anything the Easy Way....LOL. I was actually just going to leave this one stock for now and give it to my wife when the A9 comes out for Verizon..
