[Q] Problem with wifi tethering after ics update - HTC Desire S

Hi,
After ICS update I couldn't share my internet connection via WiFi hotspot tethering.
I could connect from my laptop to the phone's hotspot, but no internet.
After searching a bit I tried and added to my phone's APN settings the following APN type: dun
So now it has: default,hipri,mms,dun
And tethering works!!
I'm not sure why it helped and what is this dun type. Does anyone know? Will this affect my mobile network somehow ?
Thanks

The wireless on my laptop blew up, can I use my home wifi conection and tether...

the wireless on my laptop blew up. I know tethering uses the phone's network connection, but is there anyways I can set it up so it uses my house WIFI connection? I'm sure my wifi connection at home is faster than the phone's 3g connection.
Thanks
I think the newest Cyanogen (4.2.5) has added the functionality you want. Just go to Settings -> Wireless -> and turn on Internet Tethering

Yeah, I just did that earlier today. But does that share the phone carrier's network, or my wifi connection at home?
Thanks for the quick response.

Originally it was just to share the carrier's network via the USB connection (<-- this I use everyday), but I remember reading in the changelog that it is now enabled for wifi as well.
I just confirmed it using speedtest.net. You are right.
Thanks!!
That's awesome functionailty. It turns your phone into a wifi adapter with optional 3g.

[Q] Wifi tether broadcast issue?

Hi guys,
installed wifi tether from google code.
it worked, however, noticed a couple things.
1. After turning off wifi tether, I'm still able to detect the adhoc wireless network. (Concerned about battery drain)
2. When having the wifi tether running, it isn't an access point, but an ad hoc network.
Anyone else having these issues? Known issues?
same here
I'm having the same issue basically. My laptop sees the "Androidtether" but it wont connect. It did the same thing with usb tethering too.
Installed Pdanet and it works off and on. I'm in a 4g city...frustrating that I can't get those sweet speeds over to my computer! haha
I am having same issue..anyone have any ideas? I wish it came up as a reg wireless connection instead of the ad hoc network....the stock wifi hotspot comes up correctly

Technically, the SamChg stock WiFi Hotspot is coming up incorrectly as an Infrastructure connection, and the android-wifi-tether app is coming up correctly as an "Ad-Hoc" connection.
It's just not "convenient" for us that the Google android-wifi-tether app only comes up in ad-hoc mode.
From Wikipedia: A wireless ad hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network. The network is ad hoc because it does not rely on a preexisting infrastructure, such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed (infrastructure) wireless networks.
Personally, I can't think of anything more "decentralized" than a mobile phone.
As far as I know, the latest version found here (3.0-pre14) works, and it has infrastructure mode. Just use the Samsung Fascinate option when setting (Device-Profile) it up and it should work.
wow thanks..that worked beautifully...appreciate it

[Q] I Lose 3G on Tether

When I activate tethering (via WIFI or USB) using Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> Tethering & Portable Hotspot, I lose the "3G" icon in my notification bar.
My laptop receives an IP address from the phone but no DNS routing. My phone is unable to receive data of any kind, including Google Voice messages.
This seems like a communication issue between my phone and Sprint when tethering is active. Did I miss a firmware or radio upgrade somewhere?
I'm running Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0 on my Nexus S 4G. Baseband D720SPRKE1.
you shouldn't lose 3g...you will lose your 4g, but 3g should stay active. you can try pda net, barnacle, and easy tether if you'd like another solution (fyi, for ns4g, pda net's usb tether will allow a 4g connection )
*edit*
noticed you're running CM7...it may be a bug with that rom, and installing a 3rd party tether app should solve it for you

[Q] How to connect to ad-hoc wifi connection

Hi
Can anyone please tell how to connect to ad-hoc network? I have used many ROMs(Stock ICS, JB leak1 and leak3, mokee, pacman, miui) but not able to connect to ad-hoc network in any ROM. In stock GB I was able to connect to ad-hoc wifi. I also connected to ad-hoc connection in JB leak a couple of time, but not able to connect every time. The behavior for ad-hoc connection is somewhat strange, some times phone just keep on "obtaining ip address" step and some time it connects to the network but internet connectivity lost after few minutes, and some times it does not find the ad-hoc connection at all. It does show other wifi connections from my neighbourhood but It does not show my ad-hoc wifi connection.
If anyone has faced such issue, then please help.
Thanks in advance for your help
Or you can use Connectify

I have "data card" to access internet and the lite version of connectify does not support the sharing of internet connection using "data card". is there any way other way I can share my laptop's internet connection with my phone?
BTW, is there any issue with our device/Roms to connect to ad-hoc wifi connection?

Do you have a tethering plan with your service provider? Have you added the tether_dun_required=0 line to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db in the global section? Have you modified your APN for IPv4? On computer have you changed user agent?
