[Discussion] Big hands want big screens? - General Questions and Answers

I've been realizing after I have used my 3.5 Inch screen of my IPod touch, then my slightly bigger desire, and finally my current Htc One X, that I am craving larger screens. Is anyone else here feeling the want for large screens who has large hands?

I have small hands but I sorta got used to big screens. I remember when I first saw my best friends stratosphere (November or December 2011) I was bown away by its 4in screen.
Just recently a few weeks ago I saw another friend with an Atrix (same 4in screen) and I thought the phone was TINY!
My phones are small, but I'm craving for a galaxy s3 sized phone

i won't use anything larger than 4"2

Coming from an iPhone 3gs I was afraid that the s2 was going to be too big. I love it now. But after seeing my co workers nexus 4.65 and brother in laws s3 4.8, I want to go bigger.

Haha, I can definitely relate to that feeling... There was a time when I could actually do stuff with friends HTC Magic... Now it's just tiny, I swear it's shrinking every time I touch it...

I read an article somewhere that said people would stop using phones and only use tablets as their phones in the near future.
Not for me though, 5 inches and above is too big. 4.9 inches max

Ever since I left the 4" screened Captivate I've hated every screen since. Bigger screens offer me nothing but reduced PPI and inability to use one-handed.
It's one of the highest reasons I'm considering getting an iPhone 5... no one else seems interested in making acceptable phone screen sizes. It's sad/frustrating/annoying.

i used a galaxy tab 7 as my phone for months

I can understand the one handed thing, if its just fine for you, then thats fine.
but for me, the way the iphone's straight up rectangular shape is, its just weird to hold in the hand, especially because of the tiny width. Talking about the s3 specifically, the curves on the edges make it feel less gigantic and more natural to hold in the hand. And there are tons of sizes available from every OEM. They just focus on larger for their flag ships because of the added functionallity.
Also, is "reduced ppi" REALLY going to kill you?
" Ahhh! A really tiny little pixel oh god my eyes!!!!"
( oh yeah, and nice icon...a**hole )

Ehhh.. sorta selfish statement, no? T-mobile conducted a survey and 70% or so wanted bigger phones. "Acceptable" is different in your eyes than other peoples eyes.
Likewise, I don't dislike smaller screens, just because I prefer a bigger screen size. As we know, hate is a word of great emotion and it seems ridiculous to hate the screen size of a phone.
And the iPhone 5 isn't the only 4incher out there (gawd that sounded wrong)

HTC conducted some equally worthless survey type thing and people said they preferred thinner phones to better battery life.

No, but it's the only one I'm aware of that isn't some mid-range, low-specced, WVGA, etc. thing.

Consumers lie; or they don't know what they want.
I remember seeing Malcolm Gladwell talking about focus groups, and he used a coffee focus groups. Most people claimed they like strong dark coffee, but the truth is, most people actually prefer weak milky coffee. My point is, people aren't just binary, there's groups. Some like thinner phones, but value battery life more, some consider visibility to be more important than resolution. Some people want 4G, and don't give a damn about battery life.
At the end of the day, they need to make phones to cater to the multitude of customers. 4" is fine for many, its relatively petite; 4.5" is the sweet spot for me, 4.8-5.5 maybe for those who like the added features (extra res).
Even apple can't resist, which is why the rumours of a smaller ipad are constantly floating about. One size fits all is madness in the world of marketing.

I've got to agree in that mfrs seem to cripple phones with smaller screens in one way or another. Take last year's Galaxy Blaze on T-Mobile... 5 mp camera, but otherwise, same specs as TMO's GS2.
I think 4.5 is just about perfect. I can handle 4.8 as long as the overall phone size isn't much larger. If whatever the latest and greatest phone out the end of next year is 5"+, I'll be very disappointed and left buying sub-standard device because the Note is too big for my liking.

I have fairly large hands, but I prefer my screen to be a bit smaller because I want to be able to have more control over the phone. i feel that larger screen like the note for example are too big

large screens are fun, although i really like to be able to use my phone with only one hand..

As consumers, the survey is a reflection of what we want. Thus, no survey is worthless.
Also, you missed a spot. They wanted thinner phones as opposed to battery life, but that doesn't really counter the "large screen" preference most people want.
You live in 2012 like its 2010.

When I got my Captivate after having an iPhone for 2 years it was a welcome change. I thought the 4.3" phones would be too big for one handed use. Then I got a Galaxy S II with a 4.3" screen and it was fine. But I told myself the infuse with a 4.5" screen was too big. Now I'm using a One X with a 4.7" screen, just fine. Still one handed all the time comfortably. My hands are average size. The One X footprint isn't that much bigger than the Galaxy S II. Much smaller bezel. I think as they continue to decrease bezel screens can get a little bigger. 5" seems to be the biggest they could probably go without making the footprint much bigger. A 5" screen device with next to no bezel and on screen buttons would probably be about the same size as most of the 4.3-4.5" devices today. But I may feel different in a year.
I think phones are plenty thin today. The RAZR MAXX is a good example of packing a huge battery into a phone that still feels thin enough. Anything really under 9mm or so is thin enough, and there ate tricks to make phones feel thinner. Like what HTC did with the 8X.

Samsung might release 5.3" phones in 2012

According to this German site, Samsung is developing a phone with a 5.3" Super OLED display.
Because it's not on the leaked roadmap, that would mean it won't be there before 2012.
Sounds great to me - even though I am a somewhat new Streak owner, it would be great to have a phone with new hardware. I got used to the 5 inch display so quickly, that I never want a smaller one again. But maybe 5.3" are too much, I don't know.
What do you think?
/edit: Have a look at this site, too: http://www.intomobile.com/2011/08/1...es-plans-introducing-53-inch-smartphone-fall/
way too big.. some of my pants barely accommodate a 3.7" screen phone (and no, there's nothing wrong with my pants, fyi).
but I know that there are lots of people who would buy a 5.3" screen phone just to say they have a 5.3" screen phone, so I wouldn't be surprised if this does happen. that bezel better be extremely thin.
That thing should be called phone/tablet hybrid. I guess anyone who buy it should get cargo pants if bothered to carry a bag along.
4" maximum for me, please. Heck, I think 3.7" is fine.

Agreed, 4 should be large enough for a phone (these are still phones, right?)
I would welcome a 5" screen. Bring it on Samsung! I'll be ready to upgrade from my SGSII next year.
A 5.3" Phone?
That could be interesting but I don't know if I would want to lug around a small tablet to use as a phone. Not to mention it would be hard to hold it.
5.3
it'll just about time when no border between tablet and handphones

Good question! I don't think any of our devices are really phones anymore.
Oh, and count me in in the group of 4'' and no more. When I look at the 4.3'' thingies at the media store, they seem too big to me.
4" is perfect. Holding something bigger than that up to my head would be awkward. Bluetooths are reserved for car use only.

Priorities changed. Now it's about providing a better internet and multimedia experience.

Was all in for One X, ended up with the S..

just wanted to share my experience i had today.
got a call from my local dealership that the One X had arrived, as i had shown huge interest in it.. as my previous phone got molested by my car..
went to take a look on the sexy thing. and the screen blew me away, but got a little disappointed when actually holding the phone, didn't get a "premium" feel that a 800$ phone should have. sure, it has a very practical poly carbonate shell casing etc..
but i had made up my mind anyway and was going to close the deal and walk away with the X, then the salesman opened up a drawer and put the One S in my hands.. it was not put up on display as they just arrived that hour.
well, what can i say?.. it really appealed to me, the thickness, the weight, the sturdiness, the cold matte surface.. it just felt so good that i bought it without even seeing it being turned on.. silly? i guess.. but we hit it off from the first second..
was worried about the screen as i just had a Razr, and was not so fond of the pentile screen, but this is something different.. better calibrated? who knows, it looks very nice..
i think last time i had this feeling for a phone out of the box was my first android, a htc hero.. and it have been about 8-10 android phones (even a ipone, brrrr.. that lasted 3 days i think) in between that.
hoping the community and developers will remember this phone also, when the smoke from the One X has settled.
well thats my two cents for today, good night from Norway...
What country has introuced HTC one X
or if USA which network has got it and how to get it
Nice. What would you say is better about the screen vs the Razr? Like is it less pixelated, the colors more accurate etc?

i would say that the colors are more accurate, and yes, not so pixelated as i noticed on the Razr. also not any "spots" when the screen is dark.

Awesome, thanks. Yeah it was my suspicion that Motorola did a poor job implementing the screen on their devices. I'm sure the screen will exhibit some of the shortcomings of the technology, but what I saw on the Moto phones was quite alarming.

Interesting...
I had just about made my mind up to go for a One S. I walked into an O2 shop in Germany today and they had a live One X display model, as well as dummy versions of both the One X and S. It was actually the One X that appealed more when I compared [the dummy versions] side-by-side due to the larger display size.
I guess I will have to wait until I can find a genuine One S on display to make my mind up...
Same happened to us my wife was all excited about the One X until she held it so she opted for the One S more user friendly

Recieved my One X on monday, and I'm already looking at this phone.
I guess I'll have to give it some time, but it feels too big and the battery really sucks.
Do you know anything about how the camera, battery and sound quality (from 3.5mm) is on the One S compared to the X?
Camera is the same, battery life will be better because of less cores and smaller screen, and sound quality I can't imagine is any different

Which firmware version do you have?
If you got the 1.26, then you should wait for the 1.27 ...
Battery life on the One X should be a lot better with this new version
Nevertheless, battery life on the One S will always be better (except for standby) due to the 28nm architecture and the lower resolution screen.

Engadget says that there is a difference in camera performance, altough hardware is exactly the same.
It seems that the One X performs a bit better as the software is more optimized.

Quintusdias; the wait is worth it..
Rousseauxy: couldnt tell, cause we had a cloudy day today. but as far as daylight it is no problem at all.. very bright and high contrast as Amoled is known for.
Ascot17; cant argue with you there, the One X screen is better.. but the feel of the phones compared next to each other left me no doubt.. the one X feels cheap compared to the S. and also the 4.3" screen is easier to handle grip-wise.. but specs on the X are awesome. but then again, the dual core Kraits are hardcore..
with the 28nm Krait cores battery life should be much better than the X. only had one charge on the phone so hard to say. but lasted to the day without any problem. been alot of fiddling to say the least!
Unclespoon; the camera is awesome. this is the best i have ever seen on a phone. even my wife's panasonic Lumix camera is struggling to keep up to this. HTC have been amazing at the camera front. if the camera is better on the X, i cant say since i didn't get to try it much. but i cant believe it is better since both phones runs the same hardware on the cameras..
Can't Wait
I just bought the One S today and it's charging right now so I've not used it yet. I read the reviews of the X and the S but went for the S due to the better battery life and the speed. The X may have more cores and a bigger screen but the S is meant to be faster and the screen is big enough for me
Just received mine, it's the most ****ing sexy phone I have ever seen. It's incredible. If I was hesitating between the One S, One X and the Galaxy Nexus, I don't regret for a second my choice.

Sweet, thx
I can completely share this experience. Went to look for both devices, honestly more eager for the X.. but having both of them directly in front of me I lost interest in the X completely and only focused on the S.. the difference in quality/haptic is huge.. sure, the display of the X is a blast.. but to cite my girlfriend who was standing right next to me in this situation (translated):
"are you totally nuts?! i know you for sure and i love you.. even for wanting to stay a little boy.. but that's not a mobile at all(One X)!! go and buy a freaking ipad or i don't know in addition but this is ridiculous...and it looks cheap compared to this stylish thing (One S)"
What should I say: she's absolutely right.

Have been into a phone shop today and had a play with both phones. Am going for the One S as well. It feels more comfortable in the hand. The One X looks really good but feels like a stretch for my thumb.
Just out of curiosity, talking small hands. Would any of you who have owned the device happen to have as small hands as I? I have gloves size 10 and 9(thight fit) and wonder if the S will be comfortable used one-handed. I've already ruled out the X on specs alone. No way my hands fit that 4.7" screen.

[Q] Do you really like "bigger and bigger" smartphones?

Hi guys,
As you can guess, I'm not fan with latest smartphones like Galaxy SII and SIII, HTC Sensation, and so on.
I consider them simply too big to be used as phones. I could never do or answer a call with these ones.
I think of them like "monster" phones.
Why, Is there no new android phone (high quality level) with dimensions lower than 4.0 inches?
I think this is a thing Iphone is better than other phones (at the moment).

I like bigger ones, to a point, too big gets uncomfortable to use, the sensation might be the biggest I can use (I have small hands) smaller screens are harder to see for me. my eyes are going. soon time for glasses.
i like S3 and One X but i think bigger phone like Note is great for the big screen but to unusefull for the too big dimention
I like very much but i think the Galaxy's SIII size is the limit to be cool.
Big phones are good to a point. The galaxy note is too large.
I do not see what the big problem is?
Why do people moan about size? It's perfectly fine size.
Smart phone that is. You just get used to them. Big deal. move on.
well that all depends on your use and really preference. I got the Note a month ago and dont regret it at all. Honestly when i pick up a captivate with 4 inch screen i have trouble using it. If i was to just want a smartphone for regular smartphone stuff instead of a tablet phone, then i would have to go under 5", but i like the option of screen real estate just in case. Its really just comes down to preference.
uhm...,
obviously I don't refer to Galaxy Note, its not a true smartphone at all.
It has been created for other purpose, and in this case I could agree with dimensions.
Anyway in my honest opinion:
1. For me it's a pain to stay more than 5 minutes in call with a SGII near my ear. Too big for one hand.
2. It is not so smart to use more than one finger to reach all the corners of the display.
3. It is not so handy
4. It is not so comfortable in pocket.

Font size is indipendent from display size.
What is different is only the area to contain the stuff.

yeah, bigger is better. the resolution is everything for todays mobiles phones
I think better is not really good after is break, 4.0 inch it is the maximum fro me
It depends on the user's hand, head and pocket size. Lol!
e.g. The Incredible Hulk will need at least a 7-inch tablet as a Smartphone.
Tinker Bell can use the iPhone as a big screen HDTV.

i use to feel the same way. i remember the first time i bought my first smart phone it was an iphone. i remember walking into to the store and then walking out saying no way, no way it's just too big. and that was going from a small nextel push to talk phone. to the iphone 3g it was just way bigger it was like a monster compaired to my nextel. so it took me awhile too go back to store (about a month later) i eventually got the iphone 3g. and i remember thinking the whole time as i drove back home... this thing is too big i know i'm not going to like but i gave it a try. the first few days were hard i'm mean the size and the battery life was not what i was accustomed to. but i eventually git used to the size and the bad battery life.
my last iphone was a iphone 4. and my current phone now is a GS2 and now when ever i pick up an iphone it's just way too small i can't go back no way. i am now thining of the getting the note. at this point i have lerned to adapt the newer bigger phones and find myself never looking back to the old 3.5-4.0 days.
guess this guys video explains how i feel now.

Like someone saldo it allí depends on the need. I heard somebody that those huge pones were made for People with big hands Like basketball and football de playero. I also heard that información japan all Phone were miniture and u can do anything with it.
i dont really like that Trend of bigger and bigger Phones, i mean, 4" is the biggest i would buy, first i had a Nokia N95 its was cool and for that time THE High End Device but it was really thick and i think the screen too small for Internet(2,6"), so i got a Nokia C6-00, bad performance but relativly good screen (3,2") in fact the Displaycable broke and i needed Replacement , now i changed to Sony Xperia P (4") and it fits perfect!
Two Friends of mine owned HTc One X and Galaxy SIII and i had both in my Hand but they are definitly too big by slightly low resolution change...
bigger or just nice
there are many phones just release and releasing soon in the android market.having alot of my time researching for specs of this upcoming phones,i can say that 4.2-4.8 inch display phones will become the norms in the near future.its about individual preference.i still stick to my nexus one.hehe.but have eyes on the s2(not s3 as for me the design is odd)..
I think there is a balance between too big and just right. Having said that, it is a moving scale, because everybody has different needs and uses for the device.
i don't like mini-laptop size any phones........

The GS4 is really the GS3S

Samsung takes a leaf out of Apple's book & recycles the design of its last flagship device.
Admit it's just a GS3 with a few extra bells & whistles, upgrade the innards check, upgrade the camera check & alter the screen a bit. Bang you have yourself a new flagship, market the hell out of it & watch the sales roll in.
At least HTC made a big change between the One & the One X, especially in design and innovated in the camera rather than just banging more megapixels on it.
That said it still looks a very strong device & I might get one.

No it's not its a comment on Samsung doing exactly the same as people have criticised Apple for doing in the past.
Here is an article from earlier in the week commenting on the design.

What the heck does if it have a battery cover have to do with anything. This is commenting on Samsung recycling the same design again not on whether it has a battery cover or not. The OS is again irrelevant to the principle of reusing the design as for legal action of course they have carried out legal action as have many manufacturers.

Snapdragon S4 for the US market :\
I'm guessing that means the LTE version and the 3G version is using the Octa core CPU....
Just kills the phone for me right there.
Its funny cause the phone did turn out to be a gs3s

Seriously?
The S4 looks JUST like the S3... which ALSO looks just like a mini Note 2. (I owned both).
I don't think any of them are ugly, but I don't find them sexy either. That is all just personal preference, but to say the S3 is ugly, and the Note 2 and S4 are beautiful is just.. well, silly. Your analysis is ... flawed... to say the least.
The S4 definitely is a bump up from the S3 spec wise, no question, but in the looks department it is mid size between the S3 and Note II, nothing more, nothing less. Only very minor aesthetic change.
See Sig - I have owned most of their recent phones. I'm not speculating, I had the Note, Note II, and S3 as well as others.

the s3 has a very ugly shape and the gap between the screen and the home button is a big waste of space which ruins the design of it while the s4 is designed a lot like the note 2

You're nit picking. As a whole the S IV looks exactly like the S III and though the internals are slightly buffed, externally (which is what 95% of the public cares about) it's the same. Apple gets away with it because their chassis is admittedly beautiful, but Samsung is sticking to this flimsy, cheap plastic design which is not a head turner. They dropped the ball with this one and I think HTC will gain ground as they introduced a beautiful phone with the HTC One.

Constructive rebuttal. The phone is flimsy, and the quality of material used is sub par. If you're used to such things then it's fine. I've had all of the Galaxy S phones and now own the S3. As an owner it's disheartening to own a phone with such lackluster material in comparison to far more premium build phones that are equally as powerful and cost the same amount. Why don't I just switch? I probably won't and I'll wait for the S V as it'll be a worth while jump in speed and efficiency.
I just have to agree, in my own opinion, the S4 didn't make HUGE design changes. On that, I think most agree. I'd still love to have it. Though, Not as much as I would like to have the HTC One.

I was a little disappointed...but there running out of room to improve on...over all I'm satisfied...if you already have an s3 then there isn't much reason to upgrade to it...but if your just ending your two year then its the perfect phone...
The one looks nice...but its missing the ad card...that is a necessity for me and many others...I could care less about removable battery, I just want my sd slot...I love music too much, streaming lowers the quality and 32gb on board just isn't enough when each song is 10-20mbs...
Anyways...ill admit, I am a Samsung fanboy....I hate HTC - they are a pain to get setup for Roma compared to Samsung devices...unlocking bootloader, s-off...just a pain. I gave HTC a try and I don't think ill ever give them another...

Plastic IS NOT A SUB-PAR MATERIAL. There are many areas other than cost that Samsung's "plastic" is superior to aluminum in a mobile device application. Hell, car manufacturers figured that out a long time ago.
As long as the screen is more durable than on the S3, I doubt the build is "cheap" except to the uneducated.

Apples new IPhone 6 will have a 4 inch display! It's common sense!

I'm not sure if this post is made in satire or not. I'm gonna go with satire, since EVERYTHING rumored about the next iPhones say they'll have a 4.7" and 5.5" screen. What that video fails to address is the fact that most people have two hands. And that even on my Galaxy Light (with a 4" screen, same as the iPhone 5), I prefer to use it two-handed rather than one-handed.
Steve Jobs is dead. He had his vision, and right or wrong, there's no denying his influence. But public opinion doesn't seem to agree with his vision, and that's why Androids with bigass screens are popular, and iPhones are getting Android sized. Small phones are great. Big phones are great. Let the customer decide, not some dead over-romanticized douchebag.
I don't think bigger is better, but 4.0 inch is too small for me.
And what is the sales point of upcoming iPhone?
Health care? Deeper integration to the OS X(Yosemite)? lol.

How can you say that. According to the ad it's common sense
I'm ok with the new Apple iPhone 6 to come out but my opinion is yes bigger is nice maybe even better but is it really what you want holding up to your face if you are not a headphone or blue tooth kind of person ? Also isn't bigger why we have Tablets / Epads for ? I think the new size of the iPhone 6 is as big as anyone should want to hold to their head but like OP (Planterz) says let the people choose what they want.
Just my 2 cents..
ios/iPhone ewwww. so ugly
I have a Nexus 5 right now and it honestly feels small. My next device will have to be 6". I always wanted to give the iPhone a go someday, but man if they keep making dem tiny phones with crappy battery life that day will never come I suppose.
I think it will still be 4-inch, I still use an iPod Touch 4 with a 3.5 inch screen as my main portable device. A larger screen would make it even more expensive and harder to support by developers since they'll need to support many screen sizes.

yeah, apple said it's common sense. there is no way they can go against their own word.
I didn't see the video but it doesn't make sense to make the display bigger.
with the rumors goin around and the fact that they have increased their screen size before.....i think they will do it again.....

There's LOTS of evidence to show that 4.7" is a definite reality, but NONE to show that the (imaginary) 5.5" will come to pass.
Let me re-iterate that for those who are not so good at piecing together a general likelihood of something being a reality, due to there being NO LEAKS of ANYTHING 5.5", no part image no nothing...
There IS NOT going to be a 5.5" iPhone 6, not this year at least. Come back here and quote me when the 6 is released, and your hindsight will give you the 50/50 vision you will need to see how blindingly obvious that was, had you snapped out of your idealistic daydreams, and woken up to how to do a little (basic) detective work and generally use some common sense.
My old s3 already feels too tiny. And that's 4.8"....
I am never going below 5.7" again. I love the screen on the S5 but it's too bloody tiny. Reminds me of the old gameboys you needed a magnifying lens to use properly...

I'm perfectly comfortable holding 5.7" to my ear whilst calling, cheers. (and I'm a woman, so there goes the 'hands too small' argument.)
(5.7" and a bit, the otterbox commuter isnt the tiniest of cases)
