Options in Browser to Open File instead of Downloading the FIle - HTC One S

Hello everyone
So I've been using Xscope and boat browsers. When I click on a download link, it would show a download dialog, in which I confirm to download the file. However, I just installed FasterDownloads, a download manager for android, and now when I click on a download link, the download dialog would pop up with the option to "open" the file, or to "download" the file. When I choose "download", the native browser download manager would dl the file. When I choose to "open" the file, Fasterdownloads would open and download the file. However, this only happens when I click on .pdf file link. When I tried other formats such as .zip, it doesn't give me the option to "Open" the file. (in other words, the only option is to download the file with the browser's native download manager)
So my questions are:
1) How do i make it so that there would be an "open" option for other file extensions such as .zip?
2) What is Fasterdownloads doing that the browsers wil give such an "open" option? Is there any other way that I can set other programs to "open" the download? For example, maybe I can get an PDF program to "open" a pdf file when I click on a pdf link.
thank you

opening swf file in browser

is there a way i can set the browser as the default app required when opening certain types of files such as shockwave (swf)? i have some shockwave files that id like to view .on my evo without requiring me to go out to the internet and download the file manually everytime.
right now i have the files on my sdcard. when i try to open them, i get prompted to choose what type of file it is and then what to use to open the file.
i can view these files with my browser over the internet using flash lite.
i suppose i could run an http server on the phone itself, but there arent any good choices on the market. too bad i cant install apache.
thanks.

[Q] Is there and app that can launch an apk from within a RAR archive?

Hi im looking for a file manager that can launch an .apk file that I have compressed into a .rar archive.
Astro Manager can do this for zip files but rar is a much better archive and has higher compression.
Does anybody know of one that is compatible with rar and can launch it "directly" from the archive, and not just extract it somewhere and you have to then manually launch it.
I don't know any file manager with RAR support built-in.
But there are 2 apps for RAR archives in the Market: Unrar and Unrar Pro.
So at least you can unrar the archive and then install the APK with a file manager (Astro, ES File Manager, ...).
Edit: well I missed the last part of your message : "not just extract it somewhere and you have to then manually launch it". Sorry...
Yeah bud, You see that's the prob, the only ones ive found are ones that have to extract somewhere and then you manually launch it.
What im looking for is same functionality as zip has with Astro where yu can launch the apk directly from inside a zip file. It will extract it first in background and then automatically launch for you so the extracted file stays in cache or some temporary folder.
Hopefully winrar will release an official app at some point or somebody releases a solution
Maybe ask to the team of one of the existing file managers if they can add support for RAR, instead of having yet another file manager, only for RAR.
I have done.
I was simply asking if there was currently one available in the mean time.
Hopefully ASTRO will integrate rar support, its by far the best file manager ive used.
Then you have not tried ES File Manager

Yes I have.
It doesnt do what im asking.
[edit] Infact ive just tried it again and it doesnt even support rar archives at all, it cant extract or load from them.
What im looking for is a program that can launch a spk fiel from within an archive. There are many managers that can extract files from them but what im looking for is something that extracts in background to temp files and launches the file directly via the archive when viewing, Just like Astro does with zip files but for rar.

[Q] Can't open / download attached zip file in Gmail

I received an email yesterday with a Zip file attached, the GMail client wouldn't let me download & stated that there was no viewer to View it.
I have File Expert installed which will open & decompress zip files (over and above any native OS support for zips) but this is not offered as a choice.
I would have thought that there should be an option to download the file even if there is no way of opening it, is there a configuration somewhere ?
Kind of essential, I get a lot of zipped files in emails.

Search the market for "Download All Files" from HwkRbbt Software. It works great and allows saving of EVERYTHING.

Thanks, I'll give that a go.
try androzip from the market, unzips anything, and is a brilliant file manager as well
I am having trouble with this as well. My zip files show up in GMail with a 'INFO' box that when I tap onto it prompts me with a window saying that there is no application found to view it.
I have tried a few file managers already, including ASTRO (Which I own) plus the suggestions above. I take this for granted on my Droid X already...Any ideas?
I've had the same issue on both my phones and my tablet. No file manager or download manager has ever helped, including down droid, download all files, and ASTRO file manager, any other ideas? Thanks, sharf

[Q] downloading files the via hyperlink on website

I currently access a website that has the ability to download selected files from the click of a hyperlink. (on the PC). By clicking on the link the files come down and a dialog box opens with the downloaded file asking, to open it or save it.
When I try to do the same on my phone the website appears to be accepting depressing the link, however nothing appears on my phone asking to open or save it and I cannot find the file anywhere. It may be downloading the file in the file structure but I cannot find it. My friend who has an iPhone does the same thing and the file opens up immediately on his phone just like you would on a PC.
I've tried using the stock browser and the dolphin browser. The phone is a stock charge the gingerbread update.
I can open these files if they are sent to me in an e-mail but not by depressing this hyperlink on the website.
Anyone have any ideas?
Try long pressing on the link and hitting save as or save target or whatever it says
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
I have tried long pressing the link and that opens up a dialog box with the following.
open
bookmark link
save link
share link
copy link URL
Nothing about saving or opening files.

[Q] Unable to download files from hosting web sites

Hello,
by trying to download any data from for example apkapplications.com
I get a .html file or other files with a small size.
Is there a possibility to download full data?
Cheers,
Gentry 2
Try using firefox
Look in the market for an app called download all files. Or download astro file manager and hit menu, preferences and enable browser download. Should help you out.
I checkmarked the option to allow any data downloading by using Astro File Manager.
Thanks a lot.
