I have a rooted X and use wireless tether for wifi. I am traveling to South Africa next month and was wondering if it would still work over there. My first thought was that it would not because there would be no verizon signal (data) available there but funny enough my wireless tether still worked when i put my phone on airplane mode so i am confused. Does wireless tether not use verizon "signal" to supply the wifi? Does anyone know for sure if it will work overseas? Thanks
I'm not sure i understand, but wifi (like bluetooth) is local if you have two devices connected over wifi in the USA, it will work anywhere else in the world?
The action of tethering allows for example a laptop to use the internet connection of your mobile. The wifi itself does not supply internet access it merely connects the two devices.
Your mobile's radio has internet access through GRPS/3G...etc. and this access to provided for the laptop through wifi.

Thank you, i think you answered my question. maybe i just didnt word it correctly. You say that the wireless tether app allowes my computer or ipad to run of my mobile internet so if i go outside the US were there is no 3G mobile signal, there is obviously no mobile internet to "beem" out to my ipad. Do i have that right? i was just confused way my phone, through wireless tether was still able to supply and internet connection to my ipad when it was in airplane mode.

Yes you have that right. But not only the US has 3G signal, south africa depending on the region probably has mobile internet too, but i would buy a sim card from their carrier in southafrica, because data roaming costs a fortune.

Sounds like the thing to do but as far as i know the droid x is not a international phone like the droid 2 global and would probably not be able to take a sim card
It probably takes the simcard, but might need a different modem/radio to work down there.
Just thought I would make a topic to see which one of the GT7+ models are better. what's everyone opinion about all the models. wifi only v.s 3g.. Having an IR blaster v.s not having one.
I have the P6210
1- I like having the option of having the IR but what's the point? There is not really any apps out there that work with it, plus the app that comes with the tab doesn't work on older TVs so I never use it.
2- Since the one I have is wifi only after having it for a few months now I wish I had the 3g version. I bought the 7 inch for portability but once I leave my house it becomes an oversized gaming device, since there's not much I can do without internet connection. so I end up tethering it to my phone which kills the battery extremely fast.
so what's your opinion?

I personally think that connectivity is the key of all these devices. Wifi only just does not make any sense to me. 3G all the way...

I second this.. I always have my phone around if I need to tether the tab. The additional cost of the device paired with the data plan is not worth it

I was thinking about that, meaning tethering to a phone... Not everyone can tether to there phone some people have older phones that don't support tethering... plus you can't tether unless your phone is rooted (which mine is of course) without getting a really big phone bill, as far as I know but I could be wrong. Wifi only its not to bad, I guess I can carry around a cell phone charger (since tethering kills my battery) rather than paying a extra data charge

Same here in Honduras, 30 $ a month unlimited 3G , and I use my P6200 as my primary and only phone

The WiFi or 3G argument depends on how you intend to use your tab. I bought the WiFi only tab because I honestly have no use for 3G on my tab. It would just be another bill. I pretty much only use my tab where I have access to WiFi as it is though. I had bought it because I was getting tired of dragging my laptop into meetings or around the office for various reasons. We have full WiFi coverage everywhere at work so the tab comes in handy for quick checking of my mail or my calendar and it is perfect for taking notes and such in meetings. When I go home, the tab comes home with me and once at home I connect it to my WiFi. If I am out and about town and need to check my e-mail or checkout something on the Internet I just use my smartphone and usually do not have my tab with me anyway when doing things out and about. About the only other time I bring my tab with me is if I am headed over to a friends for awhile. All of my friends have WiFi so WiFi only is still not an issue. So as you can see, at least in my case 3G would just be a needless and unwanted monthly bill.

May I ask how much you paid for your Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus?
I personally think 3G on tablets is a waste of money (keyword: personally). I'm never going to pull out my 7" tablet in the middle of the street to check something when I also have a smartphone. And if I'm sitting down somewhere, most likely there'll be Wifi.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can one buy a Verizon USB stick and then have cell data service on the tablet?

It is not a stupid question. But... If you have a VZW LTE device and you have the share everything plan, you do not need the device since you will save a lot of money if you simply tether using wifi share under you share plan (which does not cost more). If you do not have a share everything plan, you can still save a lot of money of you download fox-fi for free and use it with your unlimited plan (Notice: this violates the VZW contract) or pay $15 a month for the right to tether. Either way, you save money by not having to purchase a USB device and paying the monthly line fee.

That is a good alternative, but it includes paying for a cell phone or Teather device, its contract with Verizon, and keeping it charged.
I think the TF700 has a USB port. But does the Verizon stick require Windows? Will it even work on android?
perhaps nobody has been trying to do this.

It does have a USB port, but I do not think 1) it can power the modem, 2) it supports the drivers of the USB modem, and 3) there is an app that talks to the modem. Short answer is, highly unlikely that it will work.

That is disappointing, because a tablet with cellular data service, plus Bluetooth, plus Skype or Google voice could be a do everything device. it would also be cell company independent if one can always switch USB stick to another cell phone company.
Perhaps a windows 7 tablet is what is needed for this scenario? I'd prefer Android.

I completely agree with you. That is why I think that the Surface (WIntel 8) devices will be very successful.

I have a feeling that most people that have a Transformer, also have some sort of cell phone. I think that most people just prefer to tether if needed, which is probably why this is not something that is available (yet, at least)...
I could be wrong, but I woulnd't think there wouldn't be much demand for this type of setup...

While you may be right, the battery of the device providing the tethering does suffer from battery drain, so an internal 4G LTE modem would be nice to have, but it appears that you are right about the popularity of such a feature. I believe I read that the XOOM WIFI outsold the XOOM that came out first with VZW due to the lower price. I had the VZW XOOM, but to be honest, I usually used it on Wifi, hardly ever using the built in 3G/LTE, I understand why people would want to have a USB modem so that they could use any Cellular carrier regardless of the device they want to buy.
Archos tablets have an optional USB stick for 3G GSM cellular connectivity.
However it is for european use only.

I want it for the CPU. I dont care for the Tegra 3.
Dump the USB stick and get the Verizon 4G LTE Mifi device, it allows the connection up to 5 mobile devices and doesn't have the quirks and limitations that a USB air card have which primarily drivers and connection limitation.
I used one for my Prime in the past, I haven't tried it on my new Infinity yet, but I'm 100% certain it will work as all the Mifi does is create a 4G LTE hotspot that any wifi enabled device with WPA2 support can connect to.

I agree with this approach -- if you really want connectivity away from a wifi source I see this as far better way to go -- you can carry the VZW Jetpack in your pocket and it's good for a number of hours, usually long enough to bridge between wifi connections -- it also can be powered by AC if near a power outlet. The down side, of course, is the need to have an additional data plan.

Actually, there is no additional data plan required if you have the share plan. And whatever the cost, it would be the same for the USB as the MiFi, but the MiFi can drive more than one device at the same time.
Are you really concerned with the possibility of changing carriers? If so, what is the area in which this would be used in? Verizon uses CDMA for their 4G and though CDMA is a better technology, it is only available in North America (thus, less carriers and use space). If you have any plans of using this setup outside the US, you'd be much better off with GSM which is now coming into the 4G level but can be used world-wide. I have a ZTE MF60 which I used in Europe to get 3G mobile data on everything - 2 laptops, 2 tablets and a phone. The mobile wifi hotspots definately are worth the annoyance of carrying around an extra device. Haven't tried it yet, but one could possibly use the keyboard dock USB to charge the hotspot and provide access to other devices. If I'm not mistaken, Verizons 4G technology is actually not based on CDMA. Verizon 4G phones inherently have GSM capabilities (if the kernel and ROM support it) because it essentially uses a GSM antenna. They also have CDMA radios as well, to support Verizons 3G network.
Correct me if I am wrong.

The only thing that might pose an issue is that the LTE frequencies that VZW uses are not the same world-wide, so while the GSM side should work, LTE speeds might be difficult to achieve outside the US.

Seems I stand corrected. The 4G LTE is based off GSM, so at least that would work in GSM areas (though perhaps not at 4G speeds). Phone communication still uses CDMA unless its a dual phone that can use GSM or CDMA. GSM functionality is not natively inherent to Verizon's phone nor CDMA. If you want to test it here in the states, move from Verizon to AT&T or T-mobile. If it works that way then it will work in a GSM environment.

Well, now that's cool about the RAZR... might have to read up on that 'un.
But what I meant is that one needs to find a specific functionality that allows for such roaming. Buying Verizon does not automatically get GSM nor does having CDMA automatically work worldwide. One needs to find a device where it is specifically mentioned, such as that RAZR you indicated.
I was just about to place order on Amazon for the Samsung Note 10.1 32gb but then came across the unlocked version of the 10.1 16gb. My question is which one to get? I like that the unlocked version is 3g wifi but the American version isnt. Are these 2 tablets similar in specs aside from the 3G?
Any suggestions would be helpful. I want to buy it like tomorrow.

Aside from 3G, they're more or less identical specs wise. Of course the WiFi version hasn't gotten JB yet, so maybe that is a consideration for you.

Huh? There are five Note 10.1's:
1) N8000 - International 3G with quad-band HSPA and a dialer and MMS function that basically make it a giant phone.
2) N8005 - A 3G model sold in Turkey with the dialer disabled.
3) N8010 - International Wi-Fi version.
4) N8013 - North American Wi-Fi version.
5) N8020 - An N8000 with an LTE radio.
Other than the 3G/LTE radios all five are physically identical and storage can be either 16/32/64GB based on the model.
There are a few of us using it on AT&T. You can add the 3G version to your plan as either a tablet or a phone. If you pick tablet the phone and MMS features won’t work. Since its IMEI isn't in AT&T's database you can also add it to your plan as a non-smartphone and get unlimited data for $10 a month (plus $9.99 a month for the additional line). You'll need to get the IMEI off of a non-smartphone to give to AT&T when you set up service. Buy a cheap GoPhone at Walmart and use its IMEI. Or write the floor model’s down.

I'd say get the WiFi one if you are around WiFi a lot and don't need it on the run. If you are not around WiFi a lot get the 3g model and need it away from WiFi. And they are the same except 3g

They're both the same specs wise. The difference between the N8000 and other wireless-capable tablets is that it's a full-fledged phone.
I had a Wi-Fi only tablet for about 30 days a year ago and swapped it for 3G. Here are some benefits:
To me, being able to whip the tablet out anywhere and use it instantly is a big plus. At airports, restaurants, coffee shops, and hotel lobbies you don't know if there's Wi-Fi available or not and have to spend time checking. If it is available you have to figure out how to connect to it. Tethering's an option but is a pain in the ass. Get out phone, turn on Wi-Fi, connect tablet, disconnect tablet, turn off phone Wi-FI. Forget the last step and you phone's battery is toast. It's toast anyway from acting as a hot spot for any length of time. Having a tablet with 3G and a huge battery lets you be online to your heart’s content. Tethered to a phone you'll only last as long as the phone's battery. The only upside to tethering is better data speeds if you’re connecting to an LTE phone. My HSPA+ speeds on AT&T are about 5-6MB on average and fine for streaming Netflix, YouTube, and the like. My phone's on a HSPA $10 data plan also.
If you have lots of syncs set up connecting to Wi-Fi after the tablet's been offline can take several minutes before it's fully usable because all of the background processes slow it down. With it always connected its usable instantly and all your syncs are up to date as soon as you turn it on.
Because the Note's a phone I use it for long conference calls rather than draining my phone's battery. I also replicate everything on both devices so if I want to respond to a short e-mail I'll use the phone. For longer e-mails or where I need to add attachments I'll use the tablet. A good example is at an airport gate area. I can be online with the Note and if boarding's called I just stuff it in my briefcase.
To me, the $20 a month to AT&T is worth the freedom. Also, AT&T's dramatically lowered the price of their international data packages. The N8000 only comes in 16bg right? Is there a 32gig out there? I mean 16 gig difference is alot? Is this tablet flash compatible? I want to watch some movies and the app/website requires flash.
I dont do much sync, I like that it has phone capability and I can use international data when I travel. I use it mostly for games, reading and movie watching. Currently I have Samsung Note phone and I love it! I also use my ipad 3.
Just a quick response to the second post. I've also seen on a few sites like Amazon and Walmart where they list some of the 32gb notes as being dual core and some as having only 1gb of ram. I'm sure it's a mistake of the website. Just wanted to share what I read.

Huh? There are five Note 10.1's:
1) N8000 - International 3G with quad-band HSPA and a dialer and MMS function that basically make it a giant phone.
2) N8005 - A 3G model sold in Turkey with the dialer disabled.
3) N8010 - International Wi-Fi version.
4) N8013 - North American Wi-Fi version.
5) N8020 - An N8000 with an LTE radio.
Other than the 3G/LTE radios all five are physically identical and storage can be either 16/32/64GB based on the model.
There are a few of us using it on AT&T. You can add the 3G version to your plan as either a tablet or a phone. If you pick tablet the phone and MMS features won’t work. Since its IMEI isn't in AT&T's database you can also add it to your plan as a non-smartphone and get unlimited data for $10 a month (plus $9.99 a month for the additional line). You'll need to get the IMEI off of a non-smartphone to give to AT&T when you set up service. Buy a cheap GoPhone at Walmart and use its IMEI. Or write the floor model’s down.

The US is *not* North America. There are three countries in North America: Canada, United States and Mexico. As far as I know, the 8013 is US only. Canada gets the 8010. I'm not sure which one Mexico gets, probably the 8010 as well.

Yes most if not all android tablets support flash in web browser, but you need to sideload it

I've been on a Sprint/T mobile Galaxy note 5 for awhile. T mobile said I must upgrade to 5G or lose service in Jan.
I am choosing between One Plus Nord N200 or N10 and the Ace 5G.
Before I commit, if anyone can answer this. I mainly use Wifi hotspot to my PC. I have a ROM on my Note and It works fine without having a special T mobile Hotspot plan.
Can anyone recommend a ROM that would give me the Hotspot ability? Is there any other means to get unlimited hotspot?
How is the wifi and 5G/LTE on the One 5G Ace? I ask because I was leaning toward the low end Samsung A32, but read it has issues keeping connected via wifi etc. And Data and Hotspot is my primary use for the phone.

Wifi for receiving is perfect, working Wifi n equipment. As a tether machine, dunno man what to say.
I am using Micromax Bharat 2 for lte tethering and always on working with charger, coz it was my temporary phone for $40 in 2019. One thing i know when i was making my choice i learned about 5G chips and technology itself and it runs Qualcomm Snapdragon 750 G which one of few in High-end class chips using mm-waves along with standart 5G. Depending on your plan and carrier it should be fine. Read wiki about Snapdragons and features and then make a search which phone best for price , technology offers, NFC , solid RAM + Diskspace, display features for such not big price was offered only by Motorola + 2 year software updates, So decision fall to Moto before buying used Google Pixels with drained batteries. And honestly searching for great price offer in USA was like searching needle/pencil in US market after shipped it internationally to my location.
One thing you may notice - Bluetooth WORKS ROCK SOLID, Not only 5.1 version (Bluetooth LE) but also options in Developer options - once you changed them , they work as they should be - switching codes, channels, max users and so on. Sound is so brilliant even on $20 wireless headphones. Unlik on Pixel 1st - when i open developer option change value , turn off device and have to do it again and again. Plus 5000 mAh battery and so on, so on.
Take a few reviews specifically for wifi - from Cnet guys or someone else to see what you will get from wifi.

Most likely going with Moto. They started Cel phones back in the day, and I assume their radios are top notch.
I have unlimited Data from my carrier in the US T-mobile. I don't have broadband where I use my desktop so have been very happy with wifi hotspot on my Galaxy Note 5 with LTE. But like I said, they no longer support the Note five in a few weeks. I have the MOAR custom rom on it and that gives me the hotspot without being charged extra by T-Mobile.
I will try the Liniage ROM on the MOTO and hope its Hotspot works the same.

We have 3 Moto ACe 5g's on T-Mobile. Great phone. You don't need a custom ROM. Just root the phone and use VPN Hotspot App.

and i have to say...there both great hotspots...never an issue..and speedtest on both are incredible..with devices connected as well..the connected device is super fast.. never no slowdown ..i rack up plenty of gigs/data...
i belive the 5 ace is a little peppy'er...i luv my one plus thow..
