Hey guys,
Today I tried connecting my tf700t (completely stock on latest OTA firmware .30) to my kinivo 3 port HDMI switch (model 301bn). The tablet never "senses" it has been connected to the switch. I try to manually change the switch to the input but it wont go. The switch is supposed to automatically switch when a new input is connected and then you can switch between active inputs. When I plug the tablet directly to the tv it works no problem.
I thought it may be an issue with the switch. To verify this, I plugged in my mom's tf300t that I bought her (it's on the latest jellybean OTA firmware) to see if I get the same results as my tf700t. Surprisingly, the tf300t "sensed" it was connected instantly and the switch did it' s job and mirrored the tf300t to my tv. I then tested it with my Motorola Atrix 4G and it worked perfectly with the switch.
Do any of you guys have a clue as to why the tf700t isn't playing nice with the switch or have any ideas as to fix this issue? My tv only has 1 hdmi output and it would really be a headache to go back there and hook up the tablet directly to the tv every time I wanted to watch a movie with the family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My initial guess would be that the switch can't handle the output resolution of the TF700. There seems to be a lot of issues with the HDMI out on the TF700 because it won't "scale" it's output at all - it simply outputs at the native resolution and cannot be chnaged (yet, anyway). Alot of folks are having issues connecting to TV's that don't accept the TF700's native resolution as well. Probably not much you can do at this point until Asus provides more scaling options for the TF700 HDMI output...

well, the autoswitch relies on the +5v line which the tf700 doesn't output
(hdmi pin 18) you can find adapters to inject the +5 and restore operation of your autoswitch. (I believe this is also why it has issues connecting to certain TVs, it will not connect to adapted DVI for the most part)
Thanks for the info. Where would I be able to find such an adapter to inject the +5v? Or at least what is it called so I can search for it. I just discovered that the tf700t doesn't work with the main hdtv I want to connect it to.
Is this a hardware issue or software based? The tf300t doesn't seem to have this problem at all. I cant imagine the hardware for hdmi out would vary so drastically within a similar line of tablets. This is a little disheartening for such a "premium" table...

Actually, the TF700 does not output native resolution. The max it will do with output is 1920x1080. I really wish it would output the native res, but it always scales down to 1080 currently.
As far as the 5v issue, I have figured out that it does indeed send the signal but may not have a method to pass it beyond the initial hop. On hdmi and switches:
"Q. If an HDMI accessory device (i.e. switch box, cable booster) does not have a dedicated power supply, is it still compliant and will it work?
An HDMI device that has active electronics should have a provision for external power in order to be compliant (e.g. a receptacle to allow the use of a standard power adapter, sometimes called a power “brick”). Here we are drawing a distinction between “active” devices that actually have some powered electronics, and “passive” devices, such as some switches (more on those later).
Some active devices, such as actively powered HDMI cables or in-line signal extender boxes, will by default attempt to power their electronics by taking power from the 5V line (+5V power) available on the HDMI connector. The HDMI specification requires all source devices to provide at least 55mA (milliamps) on the 5V line for the purpose of reading the EDID of a display. While 55mA is not enough current to operate most HDMI accessory devices (which typically require about 100 to 150mA), most source devices on the market today provide significantly more current on the 5V line than the HDMI specification requires. As a result, the vast majority of accessory devices can operate when interfaced with a source device that provides more than the required current (i.e. over 100-150mA) on the 5V line. However, manufacturers should provide a provision for their powered HDMI accessory devices to obtain external power, and consumers are encouraged to look for this external power provision when purchasing such products.
Looking to the future, not all HDMI devices may provide this much power over the 5V line. For example, as HDMI expands into more and more portable applications (cameras, camcorders, laptops, etc.), power consumption is often much more of an issue, and such devices may not power the 5V line with the > 100mA required by such “active” devices. Again, consumers should consider ensuring that their active HDMI accessory device purchases have a provision for external power for this reason."
The TF700 does work within the spec, provides 55mA. There are some devices that look for more power from it, like a passive hdmi switch, if you are using an active(powered) switch, then it will be an issue with the type of data your tf700 is sending and if the switch has enough bandwidth to pass through. It could be related to the category of switch or cable also:
" Standard (or “category 1”) HDMI cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 75Mhz or up to 2.25Gbps, which is the equivalent of a 720p/1080i signal.
High Speed (or “category 2”) HDMI cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 340Mhz or up to 10.2Gbps, which is the highest bandwidth currently available over an HDMI cable and can successfully handle 1080p signals including those at increased color depths and/or increased refresh rates from the Source. High-Speed cables are also able to accommodate higher resolution displays, such as WQXGA cinema monitors (resolution of 2560 x 1600)."

I am posting this here in case anybody stumbles to this thread like I did, while trying to find out whether HDMI out works in this tablet.
I bought a Belkin 6ft Tablet to HDTV (with both micro and mini on one side of the cable) for 34$ or 39$. It works properly with my Samsung 32 inch TV with a resolution of 1300x768 (close to that). By default, the output didn't come properly (edges were missing). When I changed the picture settings to fit to width, it was perfect. Movies play beautifully...

Thanks, I stumbled here. There is a "slim portal adaper" on amazon that might work also.
I bought one of these and it works like a charm... Dunno if the type of TV matters but mines a Samsung 62" DLP. Nothing really special/different about it that I know of. It's about 5 years old...

Barking up the wrong tree!!!
I own TWO Transformer Infinity Tabs (TF700) BOTH worked just fine going out into HDMI TV inputs and through my Sony amp into my TV.
Yesterday, the HDMI out on one of them quit.
Thisn't a switch issue it's a BROKE issue. Evidently, some of them are shipping broke, some are getting broken...
We need to readdress the problem in that light.

Hello...
I'm on the fence about exchanging my G2X for the Sensation, but this one detail might be deal breaker.
I didn't see this exact topic come up in other discussions about the Sensation using the micro usb to output the HDMI stream to TV via a MHL adaptor. Forgive me if this has been explained before. I searched
What are your thoughts on the Sensation not using a dedicated micro HDMI port like the G2X has?
The main thing that concerns me is output quality with the MHL dongle. There is a vid in the Sensation forums showing a guy only able to output to 1080i (not 1080p), through that dongle. Makes sense to me as it has to be severely limited coming through the micro usb port (audio as well would not be HD, correct?).
I LOVE the fact that the G2X has a micro HDMI port. There's a reason for HDMI ports and I don't see how usb technology (MHL adaptor or not) could ever truly output full HD video and audio??
What are your thoughts? Thanks for your time
I'm guessing the Sensation's the same as the SGS2. The dongle does output 1080P and has a separate USB port for simultaneous charging.

The good news is you can use any HDMI cable with it. The bad news is they're expensive ($35.00 USD) and not available yet. You should also do some research, I remember reading somewhere that there are restrictions on what content can be displayed off of the phone because of HTC Watch.

Interesting....thanks for the quick reply! I will indeed do more research (especially on any content restrictions). Yes I've read quite a bit on the MHL adaptor but didn't see that it can output true HD...and I still have no clue as to how a micro usb port can have full HD running through it with no loss of quality?
Again...I would especially love to know exactly how it's technologically possible for a usb port to stream true full HD video and Audio (dongle or not)? If it could...why would there ever be a need for an HDMI port on any device? Manufactures would have simply used USB ports on HD TV's. PC's etc. Makes no sense to me
It's not a USB port it's a mhl port it has a switch that is activated depending on which cord is plugged in. The specs do say 1080p for a mhl port but that does not mean that HTC allowed that I don't know about limitations HTC put on due to copy protection. Mhl also allows charging when using the HDMI cable but I'm not aware of any devices that do this at this time. Someone said there is a seperate USB port for charging I don't believe this is true.

doesnt make a difference, the port shouldnt be a deal breaker in any decision
I think MHL would be better. HDMI has 19 tiny little pins on there. much more fragile!!!!
MHL is just the USB plug so it's 5 pins!!!

there is a difference. 1) special cord needed not supplied with the phone cheapest i have seen quoted is 30 bucks i cant even find one. - hdmi micro to full 2.59
cant recharge and use at same time(spec is there ) just no hardware that knows to do it yet. so another grand to buy a tv that knows to send a charge down the line when they come out.
3)we know that micro to hdmi works, im guessing mhl does but havent seen it yet so we will see.
For most this may not be a decision maker but it was for me and why i have hung on to the g2x hoping for the fixes because the galaxy s-2 has this same port. they cant even get an os that has been out for over a year im kinda concerned about drivers for a new type connection.

The dongle for the SGS2 has a USB port for simultaneous charging. I'm sure the Sensation's will as well. And yes, you can use a $2.99 converter cable, but with the dongle you can use a standard HDMI cable so you don't have to carry one around (EG: friends house, office presentations, etc.).
I suppose the biggest drawback to the MHL connection is that it A) Requires a special dongle, that in the pics and vids I've seen, is rather large and quite simply ugly. B) Costs an extra 30-35 bucks (total scam). C) As stated before...to fully work as it should, it requires an HD TV with MHL support for charging purposes (so I've read and heard here).
I would guess the biggest reason MHL will be more common than micro HDMI eventually, is that it makes the phone sexier with less ports. For me...give me an extra port...as long as it serves a VERY useful purpose such as HD media output.
For me it might be a deal breaker as one of the HUGE reasons I got the G2X, was because it was a full HD camcorder and I can recored and watch vids on my Plasma via HDMI. Keep it simple....one cheap cord and no silly expensive dongle. Or at the very least HTC...bundle it with the phone.
G2X wins the port war as far as I'm concerned!
perfect

perfectly stated. in a year or more mhl will be the standard and the cables/doggle whatever will be cheaper. so im sure this is a good port and will be standard but by the time it is itll be time for a new phone anyway. its like the days of having to buy a special cable to listen through headphones. until they started putting regular head phone jacks on the phone. carrying the doggle isnt a big deal since im sure not everyone has a micro hdmi sitting around so youd have to bring yours anyways. but as stated. for 3 bucks i have hdmi working not 40 bucks. and the charging through the mhl my 2011 model tv doesnt support it and i am hoping it lasts longer than 1 to 1 1/2 years the phone will last without the you need to buy the newest thing feature. that's the feature that the phone starts subliminally sending you when newer devices arrive although the tv is an LG so who knows about the quality of it i have received 3 updates on it since i bought it 2 months ago so beating out the phone so far
but the galaxy s-2 has an mhl port also and i think it would be easier to overlook it for that phone(if it is all that's advertised when it actually makes it to the states)

It cost US$35 and it came with its power adapter and HDMI cable. It has an audio out in the device to connect to a sound system. The analog VGA connection only accommodates graphics, hence the audio jack. This was imported from China sold over in the Philippine market. I was constantly checking for one for the last couple of months to be used for live drawing demonstrations.

Great, I've been looking for an HDMI to VGA converter that works and is also small. Most of the one's I found are huge and kinda defets the purpose of a portable device. Please tell what store or where you found this converter. Thanks a lot!
UPDATE: SORRY JUST LOOKED at the PICS! thanks....which mall outlet exactly? the outlets I visited only have the really huge "box type" version. Thanks.

Wow, a cheaper one at half the price w/ no need for a power supply? That's great. Is it also a cdr-king product? Or an acer product? Is there an exact name for the store at MOA or just acer? Still not sure that the one at the acer store will work (lot's of those powerless converters lying around that don't actually work costing 800 or more, plus they don't have an audio plug like the one you have on your unit).
Btw, how's the cdr-king converter? Build wise/quality? Does it over heat after prolonged use? I'm really interested in it. Hope to connect it not just to the note 8 but to an android mini pc like the MINIX NEO G4.
I'm also thinking of connecting the the note 8/minix & this converter to an external battery/power pack to minimize the need for too many plugs. Do you suppose it might work (or tried it for yourself?)
Thanks a lot for your very helpful post and your quick response. I was losing hope that I would ever be able to connect android to a…regular monitor/projector.

Please beware of the fact that the non powered HDMI to VGA converters don't really work with the Note 8.0 MHL to HDMI. I am not sure why....but they don't, probably the MHL doesn't give enough power to run the converter. I tried and it didn't work.
That's not to say that Non powered converter never works, when you connect to a regular HDMI port like of a laptop, it works very well, and mine also had an audio out. Had to return it with a lot of difficulty.
If you just want to connect a note 8.0/note 2/S3 to a VGA input, take a look at this as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2248575
Only one MHL to VGA adapter and a 5 pin to 11 pin adapter needed. Also, only a single power source required, much simpler.

As Agambhandari has warned, it looks like the unpowered type will probably will NOT work! The CDR King with the power adapter works quite fine, and has an audio out anyway. It doesn't produce any heat and I have tested it to an HD tv and projector. It's working fine with good audio out - probably why it needs to be powered. The only thing I find frustrating is the power adapter is not a micro USB type of connector, like for the Note 8. So you really need to plug in for its power source, hence you cannot power it with your external battery pack unless you have that exact plug adapter (USB to the round power plug).
One problem I encountered is the video ratio. It cannot adjust the 10:16 ratio to my old 3:4 Viewsonic monitor, and everything is just stretched vertically. My old monitor doesn't have the option to match the 10:16 of the Note 8. It works fine with contemporary lcd tvs and the projector since they match the 10:16 ratio and they have options to adjust.
Yes, the ₱1,580 CDR King HDMI to VGA converter is worth the buy. You only need to be careful of buying the correct 11-pin micro USB to HDMI adapter for the Note II/S3/S4/Note 10.1/Note. The old micro USB to HDMI adaptor that worked with the Note 1 will not work for the Note 8.
You need to hurry up or else stocks run out and it's usually months till they stock up on these.

thanks again to TheNeighbor101 and Agambhandari for your great inputs. I agree that Agambhandari's set up is simpler when connecting the note 8 in particular (at least one less power cord). However, i also want this adapter as a multpurpose adapter, so i can connect any tablet with an HDMI out to a projecter or even (as I said earlier) an android mini pc. I used to think that HDMI was so out of the ordinary to be practical when every laptop had a vga port but now that tablets have become mainstream, how i wish HDMI ports were more common place in everyday projectors (how quickly the future creeps up on us)...
I realized that an android mini pc is cheaper (smaller like a big usb flash drive) to just leave connected to a projector while you mirror your presentation from the note 8. Kingsoft office is great with this especially with the floating notes in presentation mode (you see your speaker notes on the multiwindow of the note 8 but it stays hidden on the mirroring device). I wouldn't want to leave the note 8 connected/chained to the projector while you're at the podium/stage. Am still saving up for the set up. Will post feed back if i hopefully get it working....
btw: i'm using the generic 11-pin for the note 8 (it works, tried it on the tv). I thought that the new 11 pin allows for simultaneous charging of the note 8/note2/S3/S4 (as compared to the original 5 pin which didn't)...however, when plugged in, it just seems to power the mhl-hdmi cable. the note 8 shows a charging icon but continues to discharge (bat levels number continues to go down) despite being plugged to a socket? is this becuase it's a generic cable? If I use the true samsung cable will that charge the note 8 and power the mhl cable?
Thanks again to you both....you saved me a ton of effort. More power to XDA

btw: i'm using the generic 11-pin for the note 8 (it works, tried it on the tv).

I use a non-Samsung micro USB to HDMI adapter too. It's practically the same thing and quality but at half the price. It slows down the power consumption. It's charging but the rate of incoming charge is lower than the discharging of the battery to power the screen and processing. Try charging it through the adapter with screen turned off or without connecting to an HDMI as an experiment to see this.
If that's your case, my advice is you get the Samsung AllShareCast dongle for only ₱3,800 and connect to the VGA adapter. This is a strong recommendation, unless the Android pc has a wifi hotspot capability, you need to rely on the local network to operate with RemoDroid (only works on rooted) and the frame rate is low and laggy for live sketching or markups. Videos can't show on the projected screen.
The AllShareCast dongle is perfect. Practically shows no image delay. I plan to get one myself for a big presentation around August as I'll be presenting an architectural design to a group of people. I'll need to sketch to get my points across.

Are you using the stock note 8.0 charger which has a 2.0 A rating?
Your case also happened to me but then, I was using a Nokia charger with a lower rating of only 1.3 A?
There would be no difference in usage or utility of a Samsung and a compatible adapter.

Yes, I'm using the official charger. Thanks. So no dice with the simultaneous usage/charging I supposed (and I thought that was one of the advantages of the new 11 pin.)
Anyway, will keep both your comments and suggestions in mind. Just wish the generic screen mirroring on JB 4.2.2 would start being more main stream so we don't have to get stuck with Samsung products using group play and all share cast.I know that chinese tablets are already getting a WIMORX implentation of this and it looks pretty good. I hope this gets baked into a rom. Remodroid hasn't been updated in a while for rootless screen mirroring (on samsung and lg devices). Thanks again to you both.
The generic screen mirroring is actually known as Miracast. AllShare Cast is nothing different from it except the name.
If you have one of the new TV's or any Miracast adapter, the Note 8.0 will also mirror easily to that.

Oh so it will work on any miracast adapter?Thanks...I just think that buying a miracast adapter is way to expensive for just mirroring which is why I was thinking of getting an android mini pc stick instead. This way, If i'm not mirroing the note 8, i can still use the stick as a mini pc for the TV. The price of good android mini pc's and the proprietary samsung adapter are just about the same. My problem with the mini pc's is that they're all mostly on ICS4.-- JB 4.1 which don't have working miracast yet. JB 4.2 has it but I'm not sure it will work across all devices.
Do you have any suggestions for cheaper generic miracast adapters (preferably as portable as the samsung one)?
Thanks again.

I found an app called Screen Standby that turns off the screen while it is actively connected to the HDMI dongle. It means you can mirror everything onto the projector/screen, except the device's screen is off. It can give you a more charging. You need to root for this to work.

Hi, just to add to my first reply about generic miracast. I'm thinking of getting the minix neo x5 mini. It has WIMORX installed. I was wondering if anyone in the note 8 forums has actually seen MINIX's WIMORX and SAMSUNG'S allshare cast (basically both proprietary names for MIRACAST) working together. I've alread seen WIMORX working on you tube and it's really fast even with 2d games (haven't seen 3d games yet)...and we already know that ALLSHARE cast is also good...this may help me decide on this product. I know that based on agambhandari's post it should in theory be compatible but just wanted to know if anyone has actually tried it out or seen it working... thanks...again.
Thought I'd update this thread a bit.

Greetings,
It's been a while. i thought I'd share some of my experiences on trying to hook up to VGA and ask a few questions as well while I'm at it. I din't get the allsharecast dongle. Instead, I opted to get the minix neo g4 android mini pc. It's a great product. I figured, the allshare cast dongle is great but it doesn't do much else without a samsung device to mirror its contents. The minix is a full fledged android device running 4.1 (upgradable to 4.2) so even without any samsung or other android device, it can stand on its own. It's RK remote is amazing as well so you can play touch games like dead trigger 2 on it using your android phone as the controller (ala droidmote). For presentations, I realized that kingsoft office is great since you can "share play" powerpoints slides similar to presenter view on a windows PC. To illustrate, you can present the slides on the minix neo g4 (synchronized to the note 8) and still pull out your slide notes on the note 8 (without these showing up on the minix/vga projector set up). With screen mirroring, if you pull out your slide notes than this gets mirrored to the projector screen.
Instead of getting the CDRking HDMI to vga converter with audio noted on this post, i opted to get the MINIX HDMI to VGA converter. It also works like a charm. Connected it to a samsung laptop's HDMI (at the store) and it worked, connected it to an asus TF101 tablet (mini HDMI to REGULAR HDMI than to MINIX HDMI-VGA) and it worked, connected it to the minix neo G4 and obviously...it WORKED (FULL 1080p)...plus it has an audio out (for full speakers) as well that WORKS even without connecting the optional power supply to the converter....now the sad part and also my question....
1)I connected it to the NOTE 8 and tried the S2 as well: MHL to HDMI adapter then to the MINIX HDMI-VGA adapter. The TV connected, the "hdmi connected" appeared on the note 8, the TV autoadjusted it's VGA input signals and then voila...GREEN SCREEN. Am I doing something wrong?
What I've found so far:
a) I read in another forum that some HDMI manufactureres USE some kind of HDMC digital code (sorry don't remember the actual acronym) to limit piracy of digital content.. Unfortunately, this HDMC code isn't supported by VGA so it won't work. Could that be what's going on? My asus is already on a custom rom (using the KATKIS 4.3 multiwindow stable edition rom which is excellent if i might add) and doesn't ende up with this GREEN SCREEN. The asus is also an older model using an even older GPU (Tegra 2) but it screen mirrors to VGA just fine. Is it time to flash a custom note 8 rom? Did you get a similar problem with your HDMI-VGA adapter. If so, how did you overcome it?
b) I've read in another forum that it's faulty cables but I used the same cables for the asus and minix.both worked without a hitch.
2) Next question. How did it go with the presentation using the note 8. You said you'd be using it with the allshare cast dongle. I've noticed that on the big screen (using kingsoft, quickoffice, polaris), all power point slides just aren't as sharp as when viewing them using a regular PC and windows software (even on the minix which already uses full HD 1080p resolution).Plus, there are always black bars along the sides. Can't full strecth the slide the way microsoft powerpoint stretches slides to fill the screen when presenting.
Thanks again.
Anyway
Had the same green screen problem. The problem I believe is that the MHL standard doesn't have enought power to give the hdmi to vga converter.
If possible try an MHL to VGA adapter, or else replace the current HDMI TO VGA with a powered HDMI to VGA .

Hey guys, I just got my Surface Pro yesterday to replace my old HP Pavilion laptop which was really slow and has its fair share of problems. The one gripe I have with the Surface Pro is its lack of ports.
I want to be able to plug in a mouse and at least on USB drive but a singular USB 3.0 port just isn't going to cut it. So my question is, does anyone have an idea or know of anything that will allow me to plug in both a mouse and a usb stick? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
p.s I am aware of the docking station but its price point is a bit ridiculous. I just want a cheap alternative that won't detract from the design too much as there is a case but it's added size is very unreasonable.
The device you are looking for is incredibly common and so common that you can walk into walmart and have a whole selection of them available. USB Hub. Surprised you havent come across one before.

Depending on the number of ports and whether it is mains or bus powered they can be pretty cheap.

Thanks heaps for the reply. I was actually thinking of these but I wasn't sure if they would work correctly. I'm not very familiar with USB 3.0 and what it can and can't do. I just need a USB hub that has a USB 3.0 upstream and at least 2 USB 2.0 downstreams so I can still plug in my mouse and hardrive and all those other things that have a USB 2.0 upstream. I was looking at these in particular and was wondering if they were 4 USB 3.0 ports or if it was a 3.0 male connector and 4 USB 2.0 female connectors.

Both of the devices you linked claim to be USB3.0 downstream, so would indeed convert 1 USB3.0 slot on the surface to 4 USB3.0 slots, in theory anyway.
Of course in reality, you are sharing 1 ports bandwidth among 4, but for a mouse and a memory stick this is not a problem at all. I've run mouse, keyboard, xbox 360 controller and an external hard drive from a USB2.0 hub without issue, you get the massively faster USB3.0

Thanks heaps for that. I just realised that I can plug in a USB 2.0 into the 3.0 port. Sorry for sounding like an idiot but it's just my first device with a 3.0 port.
So now I guess my only question would be whether or not having a switch on each port would make a difference vs no switch?

not particularly, if it is a hub with switched ports you could save some battery but alot of hubs are autoswitching anyway and the difference isnt significant.
I use a bluetooth mouse with my surface pro. It connects directly to the bluetooth in the Surface, without anything plugged into the usb port. I find this very convenient and it leaves the usb port open for whatever else. I use the Microsoft bluetooth mouse 5000.

I have a USB3 hub, a inateck round hub, makes for easy plugging in various items and is powered, so not using battery up. Jim
Thanks heaps for the responses guys.
I was thinking of using one of the powered ones or the ones with switches so extra battery consumption is kept to a minimum. I have a bluetooth gaming mouse that i'm going to use but will end up getting a USB hub just so I can still have a memory stick plugged in if I need it.
I find that *in most cases* the load on the tablet battery is fairly low and doesnt warrant the extra fuss of a powered USB hub versus a bus powered hub. However, if you do decide to go with a self powered one, find that uses a usb style connector instead of a proprietary power connector. Then you can just use a regular usb cable to power the hub off of the surface's usb charging port on the power cord "brick". That eliminates the need to carry two power supplies with you.
Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk
The main advantage of a powered (vs. host-powered) hub isn't the battery life impact, but rather the limit on how much energy the host port can provide. Things like keyboards take almost nothing. Things like mice take a bit, but not too much. Things like external HDDs take a lot. Things like charging a phone or other device may take all the power the port can provide. Using a powered hub lets you connect several such devices (for example, your phone and your hard disk, in addition to your mouse and keyboard) without worrying that there won't be enough power for them.
Agreed. Its a question of amperage. Anything I connect to my Surface Pro has minimal power draw, such as a card reader or usb drive. If Im going to charge my phone (which draqs 2amps) I just connect it to handy chargung port on the AC adapter. All my other accessories (mouse and gps antenna) are bluetooth so they are not part of the equation. Im not debating anything above, but just offering the OP that you should consider your power needs and then you can decide if you need a powered hub or not.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
Officially you can draw 1.2A from a usb3 socket, reality is that you probably won't from my the surface. Mouse, keyboard and thumbdrive combined should be under 0.1A, 0.2 at the most. Not a massive impact on battery so I wouldn't be concerned.
Hello
So I've just pre ordered the Note 9 and I'm wondering about the DEX dongle and the dockless DEX that was shown at the unpacked event.
Currently I'm using my Note 8 with the first gen Dex which I have plugged in my TV, in the Dex I have connected Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard with the Logitech stick in USB, I also often transfer files from phone to a USB stick.
So I need atleast 2 usb ports on my dex, and my question is will the new dongle be a simple USB type C to HDMI cable (in which case I think any cable like this would Work) and doesn't appeal to me or it will have additional ports on it?
Has anyone seen the dongle in sale because I don't see it anywhere ?
Just keep using the dongle you already have.
I think note 9 will work with the dock you already have.
I also read that you can run more apps with the dock than the dongle.
There is also another dongle which has additional usb ports.
https://www.mobilefun.co.uk/official-samsung-galaxy-note-9-4k-multiport-usb-c-to-hdmi-adapter-68895
If we're going to be able to initiate DeX with a simple USB-C to HDMI adapter now, what does anyone think our chances of enabling it over Miracast is? THAT would be awesome!
I'm trying to work out how the dongle above at £80 in the UK works out as a better solution than the DEX dock with more app support according to the user above.
90€? That's almost the same price as the dock, it makes no sense. But will it be able to work with 3rd party cable? That way it would be possible to get a cable for around 5€ and just use it on the go

I'll be using the Hyperdrive SOLO for all my dex needs. If you guys do get this, make sure it's the SOLO version not the PRO as the PRO has two type c's coming out and will probably not fit the Notes slots. The SOLO has one type C that comes out. Also works as a type c pass through and has two usb 3.0 and sd/micro slots and 3.5mm headphone jack. The 3.5mm audio jack (made to fit the mac pro but not needed on the Note 9 obviously) you see in the picture folds into the device so it's not an issue.

It's still the same with Note 9 as well. 1080p is the max resolution that works with a couple of adapters I've tried, Dell and Apple.
I was watching Sakitech Dex video on YouTube. The display shown on his monitor appeared to have square lines similar to viewing through a screen mesh. Is this normal?
Sent from my SM-N960U1 using Tapatalk
I saw a bunch of adapters on Amazon and eBay that claim not just 4K output but also Dex support. I assume they have been reversed engineered and includes a hardware or software tweak that makes a compatible Samsung phone believe an official Dex dock is being used.
Question: Would one of these adapters trigger the 1440p resolution when I plug in a Note 9? So far, from what I understand, only the Dex Pad will deliver 1440p. But the Dex Station and all these third-party adapters will give you 1080p max in Dex mode.
Is that correct? Has anyone found a way to get higher resolution for Dex?
As the title, we have the DEX dock, USB-C to HDMI and the Multi port Dongle.
The 3 solutions are USB-C to HDMI at the lowest cost, DEX Dock in the middle and Mutli port dongle the most expensive. Functionality the middle cost DEX dock is providing more connectivity and Ethernet, am I missing something?
https://www.mobilefun.co.uk/official...-adapter-68895
Why would Samsung price the multi port adaptor higher than the entire dock? I also read in another thread that the dock enables more apps?!? Confusing if true, as it's replaced by the dongle.
Does DEX now output with a third party USB-C to HDMI or multi port solution that is not a Samsung solution?
Excellent question, i am curious to know the answer as well, if you could plug in something like a macbook usb C hub into a Note9 and have all the extra USB ports working, the memory card readers, the network adapter, the HDMI, that would be a game changer for me. if only a USB-c to HDMI adapter works, i am not as excited about it because i would prefer to use an external keyboard and mouse with my dex experience.
Since note 9 have a universal dex system (I mean, no need to specially use some kind of device), you could use HP elite x3 lap dock for it.
Yes we can use 3rd party ports with Note-9 to use DEX
Proof for it i seen a video hope you see visually (audio is other language but by seeing you can understand it works with 3rd party dongles)
Requirement for DEX is 3.1 USB-c support, and if you need 4k at 60hz you need to have 3.1 USB-c with an fast charging port near hdmi cable or other place in dongle
if you need additional things like LAN-Port and additional USB or headphone jack or 5.1 Speaker support its up-to your budget or requirement
Video for it

Many says DEX in note-9 is built-in inside phone, Only usb-c to HDMI cable is required for it to trigger dex, but they did not mention 3rd party cable can support this
if they tell they need USB-C to HDMI 4k @60Hz then 3rd party can support
but there is a small catch will it need that above 4k @60Hz or some other thing including that

First things first, since Samsung S8 got released, the dex system is built in inside the phone. It's just, they have some restriction so they will only launch when get plugged to a certain chip.
Samsung Note 9 does not have that restriction, so you can plug it with any 3rd party adapter. Heck, I've seen video on YouTube that shows a note 9 gets plugged to a HP Elite X3 Lap Dock and it works flawlessly.

I have the Dex Station and the Note 8. Have pre-booked the Note 9. What is the max resolution I can get when the Note 9 is plugged into the Dex Station and connected to a 4K monitor? Currently, 2K is greyed out for me and I have to settle for 1080p.
Secondly, if I were to buy a USB-C to HDMI hub that supports [email protected] (or even 60Hz), will the Note 9 output at 4K res? Or will that be capped at 2K or 1080p?
Finally, will the Note 9 support the 21:9 ratio when connected to an ultrawide monitor?
Thanks!
this one should work with Note 9

Hi,
On Monday I will connect my N9 to dock with my DELL business laptop and AOC 27" 2K screen. I will let You know how it is going.
Regards!

I have a Ugreen USB C dock that I just tested out and everything works fine. Connected keyboard, mouse, microsd, flash drive and VGA cable and it all worked perfectly. Doesn't have HDMI ( I bought it cause my laptop has HDMI but i need to connect to VGA sometimes)

Would something like this work for Dex?

Yes, it will
I have this one from when i bought my pixel c, I paid £20 for it. Works great with the note 9, including charging.

So I got this one in the picture from Choetech. Works well with decision and has multiple ports and a charger port to connect the power. The only thing that I have noticed is that it does not charge very well, so you get some battery drain as you're plugged in.
I bought this for another project and my Switch a few weeks back and found it worked great with my Note 8, and subsequently with my Note 9 as well. I love it, has all the features of the Gen 1 Dex(minus fan) plus 2 extra USB ports!

Hi, thinking of buying this one. How is the charging? Does the phone charge with the samsung original fast charger? Currently im using a pqi hub and even if it has PD, the battery discharges slowly.

In my experience, PD charging is not the same for everything.
I once using this kind of hub with my original Samsung charger, and as you said, the phone discharges slowly, especially during intensive use. And then, I change my charger to another PD with higher output (it's 30W output for reference), and now the phone never discharges anymore, and always charging no matter how intensive I use it. Now I even put my original samsung charger on the box since I never use it anymore.
So is it pretty much any USB-C to HDMI will give you the Dex exprience on your TV?
Trying to find a usb C to hub (hdmi, usb 3) but outputs in 4k 60fps. Most hubs I see only outputs on 4k 30fps

AFAIK, dex system currently only allows for full 4k output when plugged to dex station? Perhaps the reason is they want to minimize the risk of our phone getting overheated (since our dex station have cooling system intact).
