Odin Fail - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have been trying to flash the Ninphetamine kernel using Odin but I keep getting a fail. I have verified proper installation of drivers on two different computers. I put the phone in download mode, click on PDA and select the .tar file. I click start, the process gets going, then it fails.
I want to flash this so I can overclock.
I am on stock rooted.

At what stage does it fail?

Also, are you unlocked?

I was not unlocked. I used EZ Unlocker and tried Ninphetamine again. It worked, but now when I turn the phone on, it shows Samsung quickly then powers off.

Is that kernel for the Verizon S3?

Uh oh, good question. I went back to look at it looks like it is for the gsm. Can you direct me to the right way to do this?

If by GSM you mean the international S3, then you should definitely not try to flash it anymore. Sometimes you can use kernels for ATT or TMobile on the Verizon S3 (but it's not recommended). NEVER FLASH A NON VERIZON ROM ON YOUR PHONE
If that kernel is indeed for the international version, you should consider yourself lucky your phone still works. Stick to stuff made for the Verizon S3 (code named d2vzw) unless you want a brick. Seriously. Many people have just tried to flash stuff just because it's made for the S3 and it's bad news.
You should check out the KT747, Trinity Kernel, Cleankernel (here in Original Android Dev) or leankernel over at rootzwiki if you want to overclock.

[Q] Having trouble with Odin 1.85

Recently rooted my droid charge using voodoo lagfix kernel with odin 1.85. Everything went fine until I tried to put files on my SD card. So I found the forum that had the fix. Wasn't able to put fix file on the SD no matter what I did. So I just said forget it and I went ahead and flash my phone back to the stock ROM using Odin 1.85. Now every time I go to flash it odin says it fails. Now I've flash my phone to factory before and it worked perfect. Also I put gingerbread on it and that worked. Now I can't do it anymore. It just keeps failing.
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
Brian
EDIT: Not just odin 1.85 Any version I use doesn't work.

what are the steps you're using in odin? put the battery back in to flash stuff (if you don't already have it in) if it keeps failing... also what are you trying to flash and where are you trying to end up rom/kernel wise?
I just want to put the stock ROM back on. Right now I have my phone booted up but I dont have service. I have 4G but no calling services. But the weird thing is that when I just ran odin it said it failed but I just shut my phone off and it booted up.

Yeah if an odin flash fails and you unplug it and boot it up it will start the last rom you were running. You can still get it into download mode for odin right? Strange that its not flashing right... Try using a different USB port on your pc (as well as plug in your pc for good measure), disable any antivirus software you may have or run Odin as administrator, then put the battery back in for odin as always only use PDA and/or PIT sections
tried all my usb ports, but yeah getting into download mode works fine. But I just got back from verizon. There sending me a new phone.

I probably would've tried a little more to fix it, its extremely hard to brick this phone or make it so you can't recover or get back to stock... anyways thats good, hope its easier to odin with the new one
yeah, i think ill wait for them to come out with a kernel that doesn't make it so your SD card stops working when you root the phone. Right now my phone is working fine except the fact that I can't make phones calls.

Exactly, pretty important part if I do say so myself. I'm happy though. They didn't give any problem. I didn't even ask to get a new phone. They just told me that we'll just send one out to you.

Bricked....Ugh

Ok so I've been rooted and unlocked for a while now, but stayed with the stock rom as when I tried out Synergy Nightlies it gave me some errors. So I went to try out CleanRom 2.1, people liked it and I didn't notice any flashing errors. So I flashed it through CWM 6.0.1 and it gave me the yellow exclamation mark saying I had unauthorized data on my phone. So I followed the sticky on how to unbrick my phone using the 2 boot loaders and the root66 stock image. My issue is that when running the root66 stock image through Odin it fails at _XmitData_Read, which seems to be somewhere in system.img.ext4. I've tried rebooting the computer, the phone, Odin, it just doesn't work. So when I reboot my phone after the failure I get Odin auto loading saying:
Odin Mode
Product Name: SCH-I535
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable
Then an image of a phone, 2 dots, a yellow exclamation, 2 dots and a computer are shown with the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again.
Anyone able to help me?
can you still get to odin mode? also if you have kies installed on the computer erase it.

Kies isn't installed on the computer and yes I am still able to get into Odin Mode.
I'm under the impression that "unauthorized software" message comes from the locked bootloader (if I'm wrong about that someone plese correct me.)
Sounds like you're functional enough to be able to Odin back to stock and go from there - that's what I'd try. See the stickied thread in the Q&A forum.
I would run the FULL VRALF stock image through ODIN to return to stock. That is always the safest way out of a sticky situation.
Thanks guys, according to another post the version of EZ-Unlock I used most likely gave a false report and never actually unlocked my phone. The problem with going back to stock, which if what I'm trying to do, is that it fails.
Could be an USB issue - an intermittent connection would be most likely to cause problems while sending the system partition since that's the biggest. I've had problems using adb from time to time if I plug into one of the front-panel ports on my PC but no trouble with one on the back.
Maybe try switching ports or try a different cable ...
Actually what usb plug are you using on your computer? You should be using one in the back of your computer by the power supply. Seen the front jacks not work correctly for large transfers. Finally, try another usb cable.

Strange.... i was able to flash syergy on thefirst try. Never used odin during the whole process....
If youre rooted you need to make sure you have a custom recovery in place like cwm or twrp. Make sure you make a nand-backup.
I used casual to flash unsecure bootloader, with that and recovery in place you should be able to flash roms without any hitches....
I could never find a comprehensive guide on using odin so i never got around to testing it

So far I've tried 3 different USB cables and both a desktop, both front and back ports and a laptop, each one fails on the write of XmitData under system.img.ext4
I had a custom recovery installed and Odin is only being used to get me back to a stock rom, otherwise I did all my flashing under CWM 6.0.1 or twrp. I think the whole fake unlocked bootloader just hard bricked the software.
EDIT: Come to think of it I remember waking up to my phone in download mode. I think Verizon tried to install the update to my phone while I was sleeping. Granted it failed at the end, but I'm wondering if that did something to brick me now.
If you can get in download mode it can be saved. I woud re download the stock firmware or the 66, but personally i would go bone stock. You may just have a bad download.

Yea, I'm currently downloading at the speed of slug the newest update from the forums, will probably just redownload at home, since it's going to take over an hour >.<
EDIT:
Does anyone have a link for an older EZ-Unlocker, that is known to work, so that I don't get this problem yet again.
FIXED!
Ok, so using the newest stock rom from the dev forum worked. Can someone please give me a link to an old EZ-Unlocker so I can flash without worrying about another massive brick in my palm. I'm guessing that running the original root66 stock rom through dropbox somehow corrupted it.

I personally suggest not using the app if you already had trouble. Just root your phone using the Debug Root method in Development, download the aboot.img from Adam Outlers thread HERE to your phone, and run the commands at the very bottom in Terminal Emulater app (from the market).
That way you know for sure your bootloader is unlocked. This is what I have done and never had an issue.
Edit: Glad you got your issue resolved!

You can root this phone using Entropy's kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289460
And you can flash it with Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1738841
I wouldn't though. You can't install a customer recovery on this device right now and nobody has figured it out yet (that I know of).

Are you sure my kernel is safe to use on this device???
There is little known about this device... Going by name alone is a VERY BAD IDEA on Galaxy S2 era devices. Flashing I9100/I777 stuff to any Qualcomm based device would guarantee a hardbrick, and I think going the other way would hardbrick you too.
Since it's 4.3" screen it might be an Exynos device, but no guarantees. Specs/features don't mention NFC at all, so it may be more similar to the I9100 than I777.

I've been using your kernel for over a month without any major issues. The phone boots fine, plays games. The only issue I've run across is that sometimes you have turn the wifi on and off, but I don't know if this is the device itself (you mention something about wifi deep sleep in your thread) or if it's just an issue with my router (I've experienced similar things in the past with other routers and devices, so I really don't know).
About the NFC. If you remove the battery cover and look at the factory sticker for this phone, it has the same FCC designation at the i777 and the battery says NFC everywhere. I think TracFone simply has it disabled in the firmware similar to how they've locked the device from Kies and tethering.
IndigoAK, just to make sure we are on the same page, you have the SGH-S959G model?

So why did you claim earlier no one had a custom recovery for this phone, if my kernel works fine?
It sounds like this device might be identical to the I777, so you *might* be able to flash anything meant for I777.
Have you tried flashing any ICS firmwares? Do you have a dump of the stock /system firmware?

Yes. This is the model I have
@Entropy: I said that because I've not seen anyone that's been able to install custom recovery for this phone. Your kernel installs and it successfully roots the phone, and the wifi works unlike the zedomax kernel, but if you enter recovery it's just the stock recovery and if you try to install recovery through ROM manager or whatever, then you can't. I might not even be doing it right. I'm not exactly an expert on this and to be perfectly honest, I'm learning as I go here since this is my first Android device. Also, I don't have a dump of the stock firmware and nobody else does either as far as I'm aware. The source code for this device is available from Samsung's open source website, but that's apparently not the same thing.
When I say fine, I mean my phone doesn't blow up or hang or generally do anything un-phony. It boots, it makes calls, it plays games and installs apps, it mounts my sdcards, it connects to my computer through USB using Windows.
The only things is doing do are NFC, tethering and connect to Kies, which as far as I know you can't do even with the stock device, so I doubt that's your kernel.

OK that's REALLY strange, because recovery is contained within the main kernel on this generation of devices... Unless this model is a MASSIVE fluke and the recovery partition actually does something. (It doesn't on any other Exynos galaxys2-family device.)
NFC and tethering is likely to be an issue with the /system contacts...
Yeah, booting into recovery in your kernel gives the basic options. Reboot, reset. Nothing about flashing or backup. I haven't tried to flash the clockwork mod kernel from your thread since I've had such bad luck with kernels in general. Trying to install clockwork recovery from inside ROM Manager gives an error on reboot, but if you reboot again everything works fine, even the normal recovery

Yes. I've successfully used Odin 1.85 and Odin 3.07. Mobile Odin doesn't work (or I haven't figured out the right settings).
I'm surprised that there isn't a big hacking community for this device. I mean it's one of the best prepaid devices on the market with 45$/month fast HSPA+ service..
Hell, the Motorola Triumph was a junky PoS but had a very large dev team.. I would love for someone to get a root working on this phone, and it seems I am going to try to flash Entrophy's rom as WiFi works with him as you said..

I used the latest version available in his thread. It's from March I believe. Also, Odin doesn't support zip files when flashing from a computer, tarballs only. I couldn't for the life of me manage to make a tarball in Windows that Odin would read though, so I had a friend package it for me.
Crap, I used the tar one and flashed it. With root checker it says I dont have root but busybox is installed. When it boots it shows the yellow triangle with ! but the phone boots and works okay.
Or can I get a copy of your tar?

Not too sure how I can help but I if there's anything I can do to help you guys out with this phone I'm willing. I'm not very familiar with flashing and rooting and stuff, since I've never done it, but I'm a pretty quick learner so I'm sure with a little help I can. I just got a new Samsung SGH-S959G, I have turned it on and connected to my wifi but that's it, I haven't activated it or anything. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help out, and how I would go about doing it.
Hey Roxanne, welcome! The best thing you can do to help us right now is leave your phone stock so we have someone who has the original files in case we screw something up. Right now there is no real benefit in hacking this phone but hopefully soon what the few of us are doing will lead to cool new stuff for this model.
Right now the best thread for this phone seems to be at the link below:

Just a wild guess, but me thinks your bootloader is still locked! But I'm not sure that will even apply because I rooted my device before unlocking the bootloader. But I rooted my device via ODIN first.
You can try EZ-Unlock via the Market. The GUI is still very buggy and will show the status as unknown but the internal workings of the app works good.
You got nothin to loose in trying. Go back to stock and give it another whirl after you've unlocked the bootloader.
Of that fails then I would suggest using the tried and true method..ODIN.
G'luck!
yup your bootloader is still locked
check the downloads thread and use version 1.2.
That means your boatloader is locked. You now must Odin back to stock and start over. Droid style has a guide stickied in the development thread. Follow section 6 of it.
Next time use ez unlock version 1.2 to unlock you boatloader.

Cool, I take it you're up and running again. Just make sure you use ez unlock 1.2 next time. And the positive is you're an Odin pro now!

Hi, I have a Verizon S3 flashed to Boost Mobile. I tried to gain root by flashing a stock rooted Rom and messed up the flash. I had to take it back to be flashed again Now I'm more cautious before hand. I should have backed it up before attempting it, I know I know lol can anyone shed some light on how to update a flashed phone as well as how to root it. I could really use the help
Also after I messed up the boost flash I paniced and flashed a sprint kernel hoping this would fix the problem. Since then anything that I've tried to view including taking camera shots and web browsing if done in landscape mode will be upside down, any remedy for this problem? I know now... root first, flash later.

Sprint kernel is causing the inversion. Flash a vzw kernel. Read first flash later.

“System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone.” Me

I went to make a backup and ROM Manager said there was a new version of Recovery (ended in .8). I accepted and selected the Touch version. When I then tried to make a backup, the phone rebooted and I got this massage:
System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone.
Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help
Volume up/home/power just boots to this message every time. So does Volume down/home/power. There is no way to restore a backup or use the phone in any way. I have been doing this since the days of the OG Droid, but I am lost now. Please help.
sounds like you didnt unlock your booloader
Yes it does, but it has been unlocked for a long time, and I don't think I lost the unlock with tthe 4.1.2 update. How can I unlock the bootloader without being able to start the phone?

OTA's ALWAYS re-lock the bootloader and remove root.

Are you sure? Make sure you hold down Volume Down + Home for a few seconds before also hitting the Power button. I saw that same message yesterday when going back to stock and I was still able to boot into recovery/download mode. Also make sure your device is completely powered down (and not plugged in/charging)

THAT DID IT! I held volume down/home for a few seconds and then held power. The phone booted to a mode I had not seen before (recovery/download as you said?) and I said cancel and the phone booted!
I ran EZ-Unlock to unlock the boot loader. I tried several apps that require superuser permissions and they were granted it and run fine. So I assume I am still rooted, right?
Thanks so much for your help.
sounds like you should be good to go. one thing you should should consider doing is backing your IMEI if you havent already.

First, some background info is needed.
1) What did you do to your phone?
2) You have no success booting into Download mode?
3) Did you flash something in recovery? If so, what is the file name of the file you flashed?
Edit: Disregard #2, apparently I can't read. Are you using the Samsung OEM cable? Have you tried using a different USB port? Different computer?

I just noticed the person you helped before me had a galaxy s3 and mine is a note 2 I605.
I opened the ROM manager app and it said something about allowing other devices to text from your same #.
I really hope this helps to figure this out. I'm going to try a different computer now.

You...have a Note 2? Why are you commenting in the Verizon GSIII forum bud? You have to try either your respective Note 2 carrier forum (i605 = Verizon Note 2 right?) or the international Note 2 forums. No one here can help you. Create a new thread in the Q/A section of the proper phone forum you need and you will receive relevant help.

After flashing CWM, you need to unlock the bootloader. You should be flashing a vrale6 bootloader zip OR using EZ Unlock v1.2 to unlock.

That means your Bootloader is not Unlocked. Make sure you use ez unlock 1.2 when unlocking. You can verify it's unlocked when you turn on the phone, and you see the word Samsung flash for a split second.
