[Q] The Best Bet Of My Life? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So two weeks ago, I got my Galaxy S3 And today I saw my friend for the first time in a few weeks. He got an iPhone 5 while I got my S3. So we talked about how each of our respective phones was better. We ended by me betting that my S3 will last longer than his iPhone 5 in terms of who will get updates the longest. Whoever won would pay the next upgrade...and I'm pretty sure that I won't have $200 to spare two years from now.
My main question is whether or not you think I made a pretty good bet or not. I hope I did Thoughts?

You realize this is not a Nexus, right?

I don't think that was a safe bet. The iphones have a great track record of getting updates compared to Samsungs and even androids in general, IMO.

I didn't mention officially or not lol

You should probably think a bit more carefully about your finances if you can't have an extra 200 dollars in two years.

Good thing you'll have 6 months between when they cut you off from updates at around 18 months and the end of your contract at 24. It'll give you time to come up with 400 bucks. 200 for your next phone (min.) and 200 for his.
No matter how good devs are..... at the rate things change with Android, even if you get a port of whatever OS Android uses at the time, I bet it won't have all the features, have glitches due to hardware limitations or unavailable drivers for months.
May I suggest marry rich or perhaps a second job?

Your best shots are
A) Hope your friend doesn't know better that you are flashing ROMS
B) Don't be friends in 2 years, the time honored way of escaping serious long term bets

From prior experience most droid only get updated for about a year then start to fall off think you may have made a boo boo on this one

Don't worry get the s4 and he went even know. After all he is an iphone user.
On a different Note is that all you two could come with? How long you would get updates?

Remember that the ancient iPhone 3g is still running the newest updates

the most retarded bet ever imo...the ibone obviously will get more updates, refer to what heshmonster said. apple only has 5 devices to release updates for in 5yrs time. Android has hundreds...dont take this the wrong way but android devices are like disposable cameras, once the film runs out they are trash. that being said i still will never get a iphone!

he can always hope Samsung finally wins a lawsuit and all the iphones get banned!
He can also hope for world peace though, just sayin'

Well, 6, but who's counting?

Ya you lost that bet. Might as well pay now. He was a smart cookie for taking that bet though.

The bet seems too vague considering that both devices can be flashed with hacked up firmware.
On the one side, I kept my original Moto Droid from the day it launched to the day I got my SGS3 preorder in the mail.
This is while I watched many colleagues go through many iterations of the iphone, each time buying an entirely new device.
The original Moto Droid actually just got JellyBean, and I know the original iphone can not even kind of run iOS 4, much less iOS 6.
If anything the iphone is the disposable camera in this scenario. Ever try to get anything above iOS 3 on a second generation iPod touch and you will know what I mean.
Back on topic though, the bet will not have a clear winner in 2 years. Try 4 years and you will see which device has the most longevity.
Ta,
ALQI

I can imagine in the heat of the moment, we like to think that products like ours (with a popular modding community behind it) gives it a longer life span since modders will typically add new features from other phones to this one.

Horrible bet.

Might trade my SGS3 for an LG Intuition, bad idea?

So im in the talks of trading my SGS3 for an Intuition. I'm curious to see how that phone would be on a daily basis. But im afraid I'll regret the decision. I know this forum will be based. But im reaching out to my fellow XDA addicts for their input.
Let me know what you think about it.

I've really been looking at doing the same. It's hard to get decent opinions because most people say it's bad but have never even seen one irl. One of the big problems I have is it will probably never see a custom rom besides root. It's also a rather old phone but it can still play pretty much any game and handle anything. I played with one at verizon and it had some lag but I'm not sure if it's the launcher or not. Kinda bugs me also because I know I'll lose the stylus and it's just a normal stylus you can buy off amazon for like $2 (nothing like a s pen). I will probably buy one to try it, I can see myself possibly loving it or totally hating it, I doubt there a a middle ground.

Same here. I've only played with one in verizon. I'm just afraid of the width hindering it in my daily use. That includes fitting comfortably in my back pocket.

Well I've never broken a phone and I've always done that since my first smartphone. The Palm Treo 755p. Lol. I'm more careful with my phones and now that phones are getting bigger and bigger you don't feel them as much when you carry them in the back pocket because it just feels like a wallet or something.

If you're into getting a bigger phone, I would hold for the Galaxy Note II. It's coming to Verizon, and is likely to see custom roms. I highly doubt the Intuition will see much. The phone seems solid, but LG has lately had problems with keeping up on Android updates (I'm looking at you, Spectrum). Samsung, while not perfect, shows more promise in rolling out updates.

Yea I'm really thinking about the note 2 as well but the format of the intuition makes it awesome for emails, Internet, pdfs ect. The only only place it lacks is watching videos, and it's S3 cpu which is like 2 years old already I just ask myself how often do I watch videos on my phone, not a ton how often do I email look up things on the Web? Probably 200+ times a day.
I probably still won't get it but I'd love to see them make one (and release it in the us) with better specs and fore thought across the board and I'd be on it

THANK YOU! At least one person said it.... If you cannot do anything to a phone besides rooting it then it won't be in my hands.... I have to have full control so I can optimize every aspect of my phone cause we all know the manufacturers won't and Verizon DEFINITELY won't! The LG is a pretty giant leap back so I would wait for the Note 2 or the possibility of another Nexus device but def do not go backwards... (Just my opinion)
If you don't really care about ever using a custom ROM then go ahead. Otherwise I believe the SGS3 has it beat in every category.
I wouldn't. The single biggest problem with the phone is the aspect ratio. Every single review points out how awkward the phone is with a 4:3 ratio.
I would NOT do it.
If you want a phablet, wait for the Note 2. I highly doubt many devs will work on the intuition. You'd get better development off the droid x2.

Samsung Galaxy S3
Intuition has terrible battery life and an even worse camera. I do like the design but there's absolutely no way I'd trade my S3 for one. I'm also waiting on a phablet worthy of ditching my S3. Going to be the Note II probably. Not to mention Samsung has a ton of great tablet/s-pen features that can't be found elsewhere. One last thing is the stylus has no built in holder. You have to carry it separately. Deal breaker right there for me.

is ICS dead?

I know HTC has said 500 times or more "ICS is on its way"
but its like 6+ months later than they said
do you think we will see ICS for our T-Bolts?
ive read a million articles, and cant find a recent-ish one
thanks a ton everyone!
and by the way can I have some opinions about the DNA or Galaxy Note 2....one of those bad boys are my next upgrade and to me they are pretty equal, but opinions would be welcome and helpful

I'm doubting an official release of ICS for the Thunderbolt. I'm hoping for HTC to release more sources so that we can just build it ourselves.
And as far as those two phones go, get the DNA. Or wait until February and get the HTC M7.

the only downfall with the dna in my opinion is that HTC makes it
now im not a htc hater, in fact they are the company that make me jump on the android ship, and ive loved them until I had the thunderbolt, rezound and incredible 4g
with the lack of updates from HTC im affraid to get the DNA, the best comparison is the droid razr and rezound; the razr has 4.1 ready to roll out in early Q1 2013 (there was an "accidental" ota update a few weeks back that gave a few hundred uses android 4.1, and motorola confirmed android 4.1 in early Q1) where the HTC rezound may get 4.1 but it will prolly be around june- and I honestly think thats on the early side.
but If HTC shows better upgrades ide jump over there to the DNA right now
Well if it makes you feel any better. The DNA already has sources out for it and it had them released the first couple of weeks of its release. It is very unlikely that a phone with the power that the dna has won't get updates. The problem the thunderbolt has had the whole time is dual core phones were right around the corner when it was made and HTC blew it off for more powerful hardware.

Oh and on another note. Verizon is partially to blame for the lack of support and ics on this device. They keep stonewalling the update because I think they know we still have unlimited and they want us off of it. If they give us the update then it is unlikely we will upgrade anytime soon. You also can't forget that this phone was the first from Verizon that has the svdo capability which the source to that has been kept under lock and key for quite some time now. I think that Verizon is protecting that info because they may resurrect it later on. This and the rezound are the only two phones that are able to talk and surf even on 3g. The others that are able to do this use volte (voice over lte) which only works with 4g.

As much as I hate using my tbolt everyday....I will be holding on to the tbolt until the next nexus phone is released for Verizon. I've had an update available for a while and would gladly go get a S3 but the tbolt experience has pushed me to the point of...nexus or nothing from here on out.
Never realized how slow my TB is until I got a Nexus 7.
Anyway, I'm waiting for either the Galaxy S4 or the next Google/Moto phone. Maybe the HTC M7, depending on when the others are available.

I don't know why everyone insists on blaming HTC for lack of updates on the Thunderbolt.
It's not entirely in their hands, or I believe we would have had it long ago.
The biggest issue is actually the network itself and is what's held up many updates for various devices, in my opinion.
If you think a Nexus on VZW will make things different, THINK AGAIN.(I urge you to read the link)
No matter how good or common, or baseline a device may seem to be, it will never make the carrier any better.
Verizon just plain old SUCKS at getting updates out.

thanks for the feedback everyone!
I know HTC isnt just to blame, BUT if you look at apple for instance (sorry for bringing them up) they can do what they want with their phones, and the carriers can pretty much shove it if they dont like it.
now my question is this, why can apple do what they want (ex no bloatware, and updates whenever they see fit) and android companies (HTC, LG, Samsung, And even Google with the case of a nexus) cant?
I left my Thunderbolt for a Galaxy Note II and I absolutely love it. It is the perfect size for me, and it still manages to sit comfortably in my pockets. The phone overall is excellent, but the two features that stand out are the stylus and the battery life.
I did not consider getting the DNA because it has an inferior screen (resolution aside,) and the battery life has been reported to be horrendous. I would say either the Note II or the GS3 are both very safe bets if you are looking to get a new phone.
As soon as my upgrade was up, I left my HTC Thunderbolt for a Samsung Galaxy Note II. I've waiting way too long for HTC or Verizon to update this phone. I've read article after article and posted on HTC's Facebook pages and no response. They've lost me as a customer (HTC, not Verizon; I'm not giving up my unlimited data!).
I suggest the Samsung SIII or the Samsung GNII. I love my Note II and think the Thunderbolt is soooooo tiny after using it (just took a look at my Thunderbolt 5 minutes ago to see what I can do with it without any service on it).
While I'm not ecstatic about HTC, I feel like Verizon is to blame here. Just look at how their policies are for everything else.
For all of you crowing about unlimited, you realize you are paying a monthly rate which includeds a phone subsidy right? Except, you get no phone. It's like "How about you pay full price for a phone, and then pay a higher rate as though you actually got a phone for free." Ooooo sign me up!
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but Verizon is getting lots of blood from you for the sake of unlimited. If you have the money, I guess its one thing, but OTOH, if money werent an issue, you wouldn't care about overage fees.
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.

I have two phones with unlimited data on my plan and if I took the share everything plan I would end paying $40 more a month and get less data than I actually need. Plus I still wouldn't get one of those phone subsidies you're talking about since I'm not eligible for upgrade for a while so I would definitely pay full retail for a phone before I lost unlimited. Also there are plenty of phones I could buy used that are excellent for half the price of retail or better.

Just like other guy stated I would be paying more if I went on share everything plan I don't use a crazy amount of data but 13-20 GB a month is where I sit. I am hoping Google releases a phone every year like the upcoming xphone so I can buy it off the play store, if they are in stock that is. But I will hold onto my unlimited data as long as I can cause their share everything plan is a joke, $40 for a smart phone access fee equals $29.99+$9.99 which is what we were already paying to buy the unlimited or 2gb or 4gb all they did was slap a two cent raise and hoped no one would notice. That is true but how can we expect a company to push out an ota for a one year old device that probably 95% of the purchasers moved to a different device. We should all be happy that they got their crap together enough to give us this last one.

Android 4.2 and 5.0 touch wiz

And the rant begins...
Felt like venting to my fellow XDA members at how utterly ridiculous these lags in updates are.
How on earth does Google release android 4.2 Jelly Bean back in October 2012, and only TWO phones are currently running it?
Is Google being held hostage by each carrier so much to the point of a simple .1 update? What will it take for this nonsense to finally come to an end!?
Not to mention Verizon leaks 4.1.2 out this week and they removed premium suite....what exactly did this update offer?
I cant see a successful future for any of these companies or Google if this cancerous relationship between the OS and Carrier continues much longer.
And supposedly 5.0 key lime pie is coming in May?
What phones will be running 5.0 out of the gates if any? My guess is Galaxy S4 will drop with 4.2 or possibly even 4.1.2
Any thoughts?

thank god for root, other wise we'd be screwed,
yes officially the tbolt just got ICS but theyve been running that stable for some time now.
it's unfortunate, but at least we do have root, and phones like the HTC DNA that get screwed like that will be able to port the M7 sense 5.0 ROM to the DNA.

I Dont get why Google doesn't stand its ground. All phones should be running AOSP. I have actually grown to like touchwiz but if all phones ran AOSP, I bet updates would come quicker. May not be right away for companies like Verizon to add boat, but that's it. There's no standard. While that does add variety and choice, it also adds confusion. People ask me allllll the time about my sgs3, " is that a droid"? So annoying lol

Whatever the aosp release is at is basically a beta in everything but name. Its deployed to a small group of rather technical users where issues can be ironed out. Then months later everyone else gets the carrier's and manufacturer's refinements/adulteration of android. And repeat.
If you want to be in he new release club you need a Nexus or phone that's popular but long in the tooth so the hardware is pretty much mastered. If you buy a non nexus phone you sign up knowing full well that you are at the mercy of a 3rd party. This isn't 2010 anymore . the pattern is well established.

Btw I hate that too people think Droid and android are two different things. I had an argument with this girl about her wanting a Droid but talking about how android sucks. Lol

haha yeah. I had a girl who wanted a sgs3 but hated droids. I was like um...they're both android phones. I was like "droid" is just a advertising name for a lot verizon phones. Droid is just simply advertisement and basically that's it. Somehow that advertising got everyone thinking its apple, microsoft, blackberry, and "droids" lol

The x phone will be the first with klp. And if moto is allowed to do anything to that phone and put some gay layout on it because its not a nexus device I will not buy it. I'm sick of Verizon and im leaving them on may 15th. The galaxy nexus was the biggest disappointment in my eyes. (Nexus phone that Verizon withheld every update and various awesome accessories)
At least the s3 wasn't promising continuous updates, wireless docks and so on

Verizon is a member of the Open Handset Alliance. One of the founding members, I believe...
Hard to believe, based on their behavior.
When the Hell will they get it through their heads that they really don't need to be involved with much? I pay Verizon to provide a network (and ONLY a network), not hold my hand. I mean, really? Could a phone really harm their network if it hadn't passed through their approval and bloatware installation processes?

There are currently two phones running 4.2, The Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4. Just thought id clarify that.
Honestly I kind of doubt we will see any 4.2 action till way after the release of the S4... if at all.

Touche.. however I don't believe the Verizon Gnex has been updated yet.. which is RIDICULOUS.
I am almost willing to bet galaxy S4 launches with 4.1.2 premium suite

I'm almost willing to bet it drops with 4.2. I'll give you a breakdown.
Does Google handle the customer service if a Android device has issues? No. Who does? Either the carrier or the manufacturer. That being said, there needs to be documentation of every single little thing done in an update in order for proper support on both ends of distribution. Customer service has to be trained along with tech support and any type of sales person, which takes time and money. On the software side it seems Samsung is pretty solid. We've gone from 4.0.4 to (soon) 4.1.2 with a total of (correct me if I'm wrong) 4 updates and this phone hasn't even been out for a year. When it comes to the "premium suite" did you ever consider the possibility that the test build that we have is simply "bare?". Makes things easier to troubleshoot if you don't pack in every single little feature to begin with.
You have to remember that you don't pay for the updates themselves. Yes, you paid for the phone but when you buy a Windows 8 laptop are you going to get mad because you won't get the next version for free? I don't speak for other manufacturers but have to say Samsung is doing a pretty damn good job with keeping us updated. Sorry, had to rant. Just irritates me.
Oh, and yes, they do it in order to sell more phones. But, can you blame them? Samsung is doing everything they can to stamp Apple out. That means releasing a flagship phone that will be the first of that manufacturer to launch with the newest software version.

Don't be sorry. There is some truth in what you have said. Our device has made the jump from ICS to JB which I am very thankful for. Kudos to Samsung there.
My issue is that the S3 and Note 2 are in my opinion the best phones to date... and the carriers are so stupid that they can't communicate with Google and prepare customer service for the release of the new OS on or near its release date... Then Google will announce android 5.0 just as the carriers are getting 4.1.2 or 4.2 .
I understand they want to keep the customers wanting more.... but at some point I feel that Google start developing hardware and move on.
Apparently Samsung has already begun the opposite..

Haha, yeah. I just didn't want to come across negative. thanks for being understanding. I do understand your frustrations. I don't see 5.0 dropping for awhile. Google said its going to slow down a bit in their releases because Jellybean is beautiful. It brought fluidity to a "fragmented" market and while only two phones officially have 4.2, jellybean is gaining a share of the updates. I think it and ICS almost comprise 50% of the market share for Android versions which is amazing in my opinion.
You know what I'd love? I'd love for the Galaxy S IV to use the new graphine dipped batteries. Can you imagine that with 2gb of RAM and just a revisioned Exynos Quad Core? It could run at a constant 1.0ghz minimum on each core with the screen on so that multitasking would be beautifully smooth and would be easier on battery life since tasks could start and end quickly. But, anyway, If Google is going to go directly into hardware they'd have a good start. I'd love a Nexus phone to rock a MAXX battery and a 1080p AMOLED. If I recall the new AMOLED that will be in the GS4 uses 25% less battery. The combination would be ermahgerd.
Also, didn't Samsung already try another OS? pretty sure Bada didn't do too well lol.

Anyone moving to the Galaxy S4???

Hey, so after 2 years I will be moving to the S4, I was just wondering if any of u were coming with me?
i might move to the note 3 when it comes out
I've looked at it but decided it to be overly expensive. It's around $700 unlocked (probably grey market no warranty), just too much for a phone especially when my SGS4G still operating just fine. I did some calculations for "subsidized" phones with plans, but they can be even more expensive, around $800 over 2-year contract. I did the comparison with a $45 single line unlimited everything StarightTalk service, final cost over 24 months.
There are rumors that Nexus 4 LTE will be announced in few days during Google I/O, I'll wait to see what comes from that.
Yeah... my brother's getting a SGS4 (moving off of his old Nexus One or something else similarly painful) but my SGS4G is still doing well, albeit chomping through batteries on an increasing pace. May join you eventually, but for now... Eh, our devs are awesome.
I will be as soon as my contract ends this month. I will just keep my sgs4g as a back up but it will be nice to finally have a freakin LED flash lol
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Yea I will too! Actually, I already did! ;D its so freaking EPIC!! And the screen...so beautiful. If u are moving phones, u won't be disappointed. I am gonna miss this forum tho...the SGS4G was my first smartphone. And the community will never be the same as this one. It has been a great 2 years with the SGS4G. Thanks to everyone who made it an awesome phone and I hope development keeps on going forward. I'll still visit every once in a while though just to see how things are doing.
My phone got washed in the washing machine by accident 2 days ago, so I went to Tmobile and got the new s4 today.

I don't know how many of you have heard this rumor but supposedly there will be a Galaxy S4 version running stock AOSP. It's supposed to be announced tomorrow at Google I/O. If they price it the same as the Nexus 4, I'm getting the S4 Google Edition instead. I'm in need of a new phone.
http://www.geek.com/android/samsung-galaxy-s4-google-edition-to-be-announced-at-google-io-1555174/
New phone means that I don't need my SGS4G to be operational, which means that I will be doing a lot of deving on it this summer. !
Yes, I saw that rumor. Will it be less expensive than the Samsung S4 version?

Hopefully we'll know later today... . I'm so stoked I'm actually programming for the sgs4g!
My guess if Google really moved from LG to Samsung with their Nexus phone it will not be exactly the same as S4. Most probably it will not have MicroSD, the battery will not be easily swappable, and I doubt they install FullHD screen to keep the price low enough to match the Nexus line. But we'll see, still may become a good choice.
Well, it is confirmed today with a starting price of $649 for the 16gb version.

For an unlocked off contract phone that's not that bad. However, those of you that have the ATT S4 should just wait for the Google model to drop. That ROM should be a pretty easy port to the ATT version.

S4 on sale at att(preowned)

The s4 is currently on sale at att online only for 29.99. The lady on the phone gave me an early upgrade+free overnight for it. http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/samsung/galaxy-s-4-16gb-black-mist-refurb.html
If you cancel early, might be a good way to get a S4 somewhat cheap. Nothing will beat the 50% glitch that happened last month though.

I just ordered one as well. I was really trying to see what kind of deposit I thought I'd have to pay. They've always asked me for one. I was surprised & they approved me this time. I even got an iPhone 4 w/ 8 Gig for .99 cents.
I went and got it because of this deal. I really didn't want to upgrade yet, but my Nexus S is really starting to show its age (bless its heart). Custom ROMs can only take you so far with a device that old. I really don't want an S4 (hardware buttons including the ugly physical home button, front Samsung branding, little dev community support compared to my Nexus S), but the deal was too good to pass up. I guess I could sell this for $400-450 (maybe more?) by the time the next Nexus phone is out. Anyway, I can't wait for it to arrive so I can experience some of that 1080p Gotdamoled goodness. I may even keep it if the bootloader situation and community support gets better.

I see, you seem to think I was talking about the community. I wasn't. I was badmouthing Samsung. In regards to the community, I was simply stating the current situation of things. The community support for this phone, in which there's not much going on, is a result of Samsung's and the carriers' doing.
I'm not sure how what I said could be misinterpreted to mean I'm bad-mouthing any entity other than Samsung. Calm down, read, and stop looking for something negative.

Just sold my skyrocket for $220 on eBay. I'd say that held value pretty well. Listing my wife's S3 today, that should sell for $250+, and I really only need it to sell for $200 in order for her S4 to be completely free including activation.
