[Q] Problem with Sandisk ultra 64gb sdxc card - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried this card before and the unit didnt seem to find it, it just showed at the bottom saying can be removed, but when i went to storage it wasn't there.
i put the card in my laptop and used guiformat to format it as fat32 but it shows as 29gb and not 64. the packaging says 64gb, am i missing something or do i have a wrong card in my packaging?
james

Look at the card to see if its a 32gb or 64gb. Use a laptop/pc and reformat it using exfat and see how much memory is available. I had that same problem when I I inserted in the
note, I did use EaseUS Partition Master to format to FAT32 and worked fine. Then I manually updated my firmware on the note N8013 and I was able to format through the note and back to exFAT.

It said 64gb on the card and the packaging, i have sent it back to amazon for an exchange, i had also formatted the card with guiformat as fat32 and it still showed as 29gb free. even after formatting it as fat32 my note 10.1 still wouldn't see it

Have you tried formatting fat32 using a different software such as the one I mentioned on my previous post? What 10.1 note do you own and it's build number?
Sent from my GT-N8013 using xda premium

i own the n8010

Im not familiar on which is the latest update on the N8010, but you should post your build and maybe someone can help if it needs an update or do a search here on the forum. The only thing I can help with is eliminating if your sdcard is defective, but since you already returned its hard test it now.

my build is: IMM76D.N8010XXALGC

I have the exact same problem on my spanking new note 10.1 32gb N8013 (UEALGB) model with 64gb sdxc sandisk card. Can you share more info about the manual update you did?

I had this problem on an 8000... I don't know why but the note seems to partition exfat cards to a FAT32 32gb partition and an unformatted partition. It destroyed my new 64gb sd card as NOTHING would recover it....
Had to get a new card....

I got the SanDisk ultra 64gb sdxc and used it with my s3. I just put the card in my new N8000 and so far everything is working great.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

i have the same problem, when i insert the card on the phone it say blank card
when i insert it on the PC it read it EXFAT format
when i copy my data and put it back to the Note the card is read only where i cannot edit at all or add files or add new folder even\
Any idea??

steps to get 64gb working
can anybody please provide a step by step guideline including tools how to get a new 64gb card working??
thx

The two tools I have used and found most effective are SD Formatter here and EASUS Partition here.. Both freebies and both very intuitive to use.
Also the latest update allegedly resolves some issues with 64GB uSD cards.

Correct. Latest update does handle the 64Gb cards much better. I was on the same firmware as previously mentioned i .e. XXALGC and when I inserted the card I couldn't do anything with it. So I downloaded the latest firmware for the GT-N8000 off Sammobile - The september German version as it said it includes UK, flashed it through odin and that was it . Card worked perfectly didnt have to do anything to it. I did format it through the settings > storage menu anyway to be safe and all was good.
Also, the update gave me newer versions of snote and polaris which helped cure a few little gripes too , so all good !:fingers-crossed:

Same here UK 16gb 8010 WiFi only
It needs the updated firmware to work properly but as there ain't a later one just for the UK I went with the German one. No issues so far and yes I have a keyboard dock too

So will 64GB exEF cards work with the note 10.1?
Or or the safe side i should go for a 32GB? And still, FAT32 or exEF?

Yep, 64gb MicroSD exFat works Just got mine today
Had mine for last mine or two. Works fine, however, just make sure you are running the latest rom or it could kill your sd card... The earlier versions of stock firmware didn't have exFAT support and only formatted up to 32gb on the 64gb card. Some people were lucky enough to be able to recover this however there are a few who lost their card because of this... And a bricked 64gb sd card is an expensive thing to have....
Using Easius partition manager you should be able to format to FAT32 though if you wish and that will work no problem whatsoever...

how do i know if it supports 64GB exFAT?
I'm using an 64gb sandisk ultra class 10, but here in Brazil still dont had any firmware update, so I formated in FAT32 and its ok!

I'm not sure, but I have 4.0.4 as well, but everywhere I'm reading says that the 4.0.4 update was available in October 2012. Not sure why you got it in August though. But yea, apparently the 4.0.4 update has exFat support, so it should be fine. I'd go on your Note to see if there are any software updates just in case.

Can't copy files to the SD card

I have tried using ES file explorer, the Asus file manager, and FX file explorer. I get a copy failed message every time I try to copy a file to the removable SD card.
Anyone else have this issue?

I just did. Seems I'm only having issues with the 32 GB size cards. Acting like they are read only. Can't find such a setting anywhere. Is there another format that should work?

Have you tried with the latest kernel (JB version .25) and what make and model of your sdcard? just wonder if compability issue and are we talking about Micro sdcard or full size sdcard? On the full size there is a little switch on the side to block writting to the card.
I'm only having issues when I'm using the tablet to copy files. I'm on CleanROM Inheritance. I don't recall if I had this issue with the stock rom. Sometime tonight I will make a backup of my current and then flash to stock rom. Since I'm talking about the removable SD card, it could only be the micro SD that is installed in the tablet. There is no switch on that card.

Yes, it replaced what ever kernel you selected during cleanrom installation. Since it stock kernel, you can no longer Overclock.
Is there another kernel that can be the fix and still give us over clock?

Hi.
I'm having a problem with my Samsung Micro SDXC I (Class 10) card. I've been messing abut with it for days now, formatting, re-formatting in exFAT, FAT32, NTFS but the problem persists; whenever I try to copy data across to the card, the first time the card is inserted, it starts to copy, sometimes even up to 1.5Gb of data but often much less, but then gives me a 'Write Error' or 'I/O Error' message & stops working. Sometimes it also deletes other data on the card when the error occurs. then, until I unmount the card again, it barely functions at all!
A big factor in buyinh this tablet, unlocking, then rooting it was so that I'd have an awesome, small, tablet that had loads of storage & could be transported around very easily. If I can't get the cards to work with it, that's a big part of it's usefulness to me down the drain.
I tried to download the kernal that was mentioned above the message of yours that I'm replying to but the file has been moved. Do you still have it?.......or know how I can resolve my problem without it?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

You don't say which rom or firmware you are currently using. Without knowing that I wouldn't go blindly flashing kernels that are nearly a year old
It could be that your card is actually damaged as I can copy files just fine on mine. I'm using a SanDisk Ultra uhs-1.

Hi sbdags,
Roger that
I'm not bad with most things tecchie but whilst I know which ROM I'm using, I'm not sure what the firmware is.
I recently updated to CROMI-X 5.2.2 from an earlier version in the hope that that might include an update or something that would solve my SD card problem.......it didn't
With regard to 'Firmware', I'm not sure where that's listed on the tablet but in the 'About' tab in my settings, it says:
Android Version - 4.2.1
Kernal Version - 3.1.10-g215ae8bf [email protected] # 1
Build Number - TF700 CHROMI-X 5.2.2 - 10.6.1.27.5 WW DEODEX
Pad EC Version - PAD-EC20T-0216
MobileDock Version - DOCK-EC20N-0207
I hope the firmware information you need is in there somewhere?
The card I bought is the latest 64Gb Samsung Micro SDXC Pro UHS-1 (Class 10) with write speeds of 20Mb/s & 70Mb transfer speed. I had read the formums & was torn between this card & the SanDisk 64Gb Ultra Micro SDXC (Class 10), the two-tone red/grey version, presumably like the one you're using but the Samsung was faster & at the time I bought it, the Samsungwas almost £15 cheaper. Since they were both reported to work, I opted for the Samsung card; maybe that was a bad decision?
I've just ordered the SanDisk 64Gb card, in the hope that that one will work because as i said, it really would be a shame if I can't make use of the extended storage that the SD crads give.
Do you use your SanDisk card in Micro SD form in the tablet or SD form in the dock.....or both......& have you got them formatted to exFAT or some other format?
Thanks again for your attention.

Hi sbdags.
I've tried using both the File Explorer that was included with CHROMI-X & another one from the Play Store that I use on my phone called Astro; the same thing happens with both. As I say, the card seemed okay to begin with but all I had put on it was my Nandroid & Titanium backups (approx. 2Gb total with lots of small files included). The problems started when I tried to copy a season of a TV series onto the card to free up space on the internal SD card. It started off okay & I wasn't expecting any problems but then approx 1.5Gb, I got an I/O write error & then all the problems I described in my first post.
As an aside, the card performed best when formatted to FAT32 but according to the SD Card Association, SDXC cards come formatted as exFAT, so that's how it's currently formatted; I thought if that's how it came & it initially worked okay, maybe that would solve the issue. Again, I was wrong!
So, I'll format it back to FAT32 again but as I've already had it in that format, I wouldn't anticipate any change to the card's behaviour.
The 64Gb SanDisk card should be here in a few days, so I'll be able to report on whether that one works or not then.
Did you have to re-format yours when you first got it or are the SD Card Association talking nonsense? Oh, & you didn't say whether you're able to use your cards in both micro form in the pad &/or full-size form in the dock? Also, was the Firmware information you asked for in that mass of stuff I listed. If not, where do I find it, so I know for the next time you ask
Thanks again

I've never tried my card in the dock to be honest. Both my cards; 32GB and 64GB are SanDisk, I am not sure now what they cam in but I am using fat32 as I formatted them myself.
As for the stuff you posted I just wanted to know the rom and bootloader version. So CROMi-X 5.2.2 on 10.6.1.14.10 would have ben enough. Maybe the kernel helps too. In your case you are using the stock kernel. You may get better results on thatv4 kernel?

So, I think I've grasped that the kernel is similar to the BIOS on a PC; is that correct?

Not really, the kernel is ... the kernel. The core of the operating system. Under Windows it's ntoskrnl.exe.
You could compare the bootloader with the PC BIOS - its main function (nowadays) is to start the operating system.

The HTC ONE SV works also with microSDXC Card. In the specs it says microSDHC cards but I operate mine since I bought it with a 64GB microSDXC card without any problems.

After this mod your sd card will be recognized as internal memory and the internal around 4 GB will be recognized as sd card.
Ok... Is possible to change partition table for join application space with intrrnal space (1.1+4 GB) and use for applicazioni? So the sd could be used as external space...

See, I'm also running ViperSV 1.1.1 and when I put the card in initially it said it was unsupported or damaged. Tried reformatting it in Windows, now shows up as 59GB exFAT in Windows but still not working on the phone. Is yours formatted differently or something?
UPDATE: I'm hearing elsewhere that it needs to be formatted as FAT32 in order to work, and Windows doesn't want to format it to anything other than exFAT or NTFS (while SD Formatter only uses exFAT). Apparently there's some sort of issue with the fact that the Class 10 cards have exFAT and a mysterious 16MB hidden offset partition at the start of the drive, so I'm now gonna try getting rid of that to see if it works.
UPDATE: Yep, looks like both: 1. The phone (Android?) doesn't support exFAT without a mounting mod, and 2. That weird 16MB offset at the start of the drive seems to cause compatibility issues as well. Have wiped the offset and reformatted to FAT32, and the card now works.
Thanks for the recommendation and the quick reply!

Hey guys, I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 and I just got a SanDisk 64Gb class 10 micro sd card for it. I have the same cars for my S4 and it works fine. However when I insert the new card into my note it says "checking sd card" and then will immediately say "safe to remove sd card". I can write and format the card in my computer and when I format it to NTSF (which I know android won't read) I get it to tell me that I need to format the sd card which I do and it works fine. Then once format is compete it does the same problem.
I put the new card into my S4 and it mounted fine. Now before you tell me it's a problem with my Note 10.1 read this:
I have a 8Gb SanDisk microSD that works just fine. Also when I put the 64Gb card in and boot to TWRP recovery I can mount and write to the card just fine.
I am running Hyper Drive rtl3 and I had the problem. So I wiped and updated to hyper drive rtl4 and the problem still exists.
I'm really baffled by this problem. Any ideas guys?
Also after I post this I plan to take the 64gb card that is in my S4 and trying it in my note. I'll post back what happens.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Alright so the Sd card from my phone which works in my phone did the same thing in my note. Could it be the ROM I am using. Is this a problem that's known in Hyperdrive? Again running the most current 4.0.0.0 version.

FAT32 or EXFAT?
Read post 209 and 210 from the link.

The attached file can format your Sandisk 64gb chip to fat32 if you need to. I used it to format my Sandisk 64GB 2 days ago.
If you need more help let us know.
.
Your ROM won't recognize a 64gb card. I went back to stock so that I could use mine. Lots of info on here about this.

Formatting to FAT32 worked perfectly thanks.
And yes this rom does support 64bit cards.

Sadly, formatting my Samsung 64GB UHC to FAT 32 from eFAT didn't help. As before, when I slip the card into the slot for a microsecond the "Mount SD Card" appears then greys out and in the tastbar appears "Preparing SD card checking for errors" and this message stays there for eternity or until I either take the card out or reboot.
Cmcole101 mine dose the same thing did you ever end up fixing it?

[Q] 64gb sdxc not working

I've tried formatting the sdxc-card in so many ways now. Using both diskpart. minitool partition wizard, sdformatter and easeus partition manager.
Tried using FAT32, exFat and NTFS. None of them works. When using exFat the card is recognized and the phone asks if I want to format, but nothing happens after it says it's erasing the sd card.
The card works perfectly fine in Windows formatted as exFat.
I'm running stock ICS 4.0.4 if it helps to know.
I also have a friend who is using a 64gb sdxc card on the same type of phone.
Which version he's using I do not know.
Does anyone know how to solve this?

I thought, the Desire S can work with up to 32GB sd-cards. I've read it many times on different web-sites.

So I've read also, but since my friend is using a 64GB without a hitch it should work. Unless it's only possible when using a custom rom? For a short period I managed to get the phone to see the card and report all 64GB, but then it was unmounted. Managed to do this using a certain cluster size as exFat if I remember right.

You could ask your friend, the correct model of the SD-Card, and buy the one he also has, or test his one and see, if it's related with your hardware or not. I'm still a bit noob, so, you'll better also hear opinions by other XDA members.
Might have found the issue
I downgraded from ice cream sandwich to gingerbread(?) 2.3.3 while I at the same time rooted the phone and set the bootloader to s-off.
Now the phone itself has managed to format the card and recognize ~62GB/64GB. I successfully formatted it using cwm too and the phone still recognizes it. At the moment I'm partitioning the sdxc-card with a higher cluster size since it was really really slow when I tried to copy a file from windows. Note that it's a class 10 card.
Appears to be a problem with ICS. If anyone else can confirm this we're set here I think.

Ok, the good news is, you made the phone to recognize it! That's really good, taking into account that reviews said it's only capable of having up to 32GB standard SD-card.

Formatting the card as FAT32 with a primary and active partition is the only way I can get the card to be recognized.
But as soon as I try to copy something to the card it gets removed and unusable again.
Could there be a need for several partitions? One primary and one logical perhaps?
I've changed to flinnys version of CM10.1 build 22 called andromadus (jelly bean) which at a couple of times reported the card as damaged.
Tips on software for checking and possibly fixing a damaged one?
