I am considering using the stock e-mail client for gmail or my google apps hosted account since I like the floating app feature and the ability to reply directly from the notification.
I am able to set up the client using IMAP but I thought I could use it setup as exchange sync so I'd get push e-mail instead of polling. I know that on iOS devices you setup Gmail and apps to sync using exchange. When I'm in the app though I've tried to setup my account as an exchange account and cannot get it to work. This is what I've tried.
Domain\user name (tried all below)
google\[email protected]
\[email protected]
[email protected]
Password
password <-- yes, I know it's correct.
Exchange server
m.google.com
Use secure connection (SSL) - Checked
Use client certificate - Unchecked
Has anyone been able to get the stock e-mail client to sync with Gmail or apps using exchange protocol? Is there an advantage to this or should I just stick with IMAP?

Hello,
Use client certificate - Unchecked
it must be checked.
And you should put a \ before your mail address.

It works but the problem i faced with the pop account is that it does not sync old mails and my mails are downloaded to multiple devices like laptop, bb and my cell and note and hence some mails if read before dl are missed.
Some of the other problems I face is its not instant like gmail is minimum check time is 5 mins and the layout is pretty poor if you are writing a mail most of the area is covered by the titles and keyboard

For the first problem please check your other devices settings: all should leave a copy at the server. But even so once you have read a new gmail, the following devices may display it as read, not new. E.g : If you check your mail from notebook first, the phone or BB may display it read before (not bold). For old mails sync it should be a setting for time period. It vary from device or program but usually 60 days. You may check to adjust it acoording to your demand. I have say that for archive check of ald mails, outlook etc is the best for quick search and find. Android or other apps are not convinient for this. We are addicted to our PC's
If you set up an exchange account for gmail, its push mail. The layout of keyboard and screen size is relevant.
Hope I could help.

I am using the default email software supplied with WM6 on my TMobile Wing to check my Gmail account. I didn't want to have an extra Java app installed just to check Gmail, as I am really low on program space.
I like how it works, except for one little thing - when I get my mail, it also downloads emails that I have SENT and puts them into my Inbox as if I had received it, or sent it to myself. How do I stop this? Is there any way to make the software stop downloading from the Sent folder on Gmail?
Thanks!
Are you using POP to access your gmail? In the POP settings on your gmail site you can create a filter to control which email is downloaded via POP, so you could probably create a filter which excludes sent email
Yep, POP3 access.
That sounds like just what I need. I'll check out the Gmail FAQ and see what I can find.
Thanks!

Ok I didn't see anything to fix that in the Gmail settings or FAQ. Blah. I may just access it via the webpage. I liked having the poutlook do it though. Oh well.
Hmm use EMOZE

You can easily create POP3 account in WM5 or WM6 and manually do send receive or you can setup intervals which pocket outlook will access your Gmail account. In fact in pocket outlook when you create new pop email account for Gmail the setting will be made automatically. You simply need to enter your email address and password
Anyhow before doing above you need to enable POP3 in Gmail Web.
acces your web gmail --> go to settings and enable the POP3 access. Under settings there is also a tab for email filtering in which you can define which mails should be forward to POP3
Furthermore If you wan to have push mail, you can apply for free http://mail2web.com account. It is free MS exchange service. Forward your Gmail's to your mail2web account and it will push it to your device. (it functions perfectly)
I think you guys are misunderstanding my problem.
I have it sending/receiving manually, and it works just fine.
The problem is if I send a message at home on my computer, then I get my Wing and access my mail, it downloads the message I sent from my sent folder onto my phone, as if it were in my inbox.
What exactly is "pushing" btw?

RVM,
as I mentioned go to settings in your gmail web account there is the tab of filters. Then create a filter with your email
i.e:
from : [email protected]
Pushmail is similar to blackberry email, email that comes to your inbox will be pushed (send) to your hand device. You save manualy checking your inbox.
That's what I did. I went into filters and there was no option to have it not allow the sent mail to be downloaded via a POP3 client. I may have missed something so I will go have another look.

Dear All,
I've downloaded and installed gmail apps on my trinity wm6 equipped.
application work fine for me.
I would just know if there is a way to :
a) let it permanently run on background
b) check new mail on x minutes
c) notify me of new mail
thank you very much

-After setting up your phone Open the email app (not gmail) Select exchange account.
-For Domain/Username put in "/[email protected]"(or "/[email protected]" or google apps users) without quotes. The password should be filled in from the previous field. The Exchange server is "m.google.com" without quotes. Check both boxes below for ssl and encryption and hit next.
-Select the checking frequency(push will notify you as soon as a new email is delivered) and amount to synchronize (up to a month). then select next.
-Put in an account name and display name, then hit done. If you have corporate calendar installed, then your calendar will synchronize and so will your contacts and email.
Now go to your account sync settings and turn off all syncs for your gmail account, but make sure sync and exchange are turned on so that it updates when new emails or contacts come in.
This is a great temporary fix until on of the devs finally figues out how to get the real gmail sync working
-Thanks to ebg10 via eugene373 for the great idea

I have gotten google sync working in this rom and all other 2.0 roms through exchange. It syncs mail, contacts, and calendar without the need for google apps. To get this working make a new exchange account and put in your gmail email address and password and then select manual setup. Select exchange account. For Domain/Username put in "/[email protected]" without quotes. The password should be filled in from the previous field. The Exchange server is "m.google.com" without quotes. Check both boxes below and hit next. Select the checking frequency(or push) and amount to synchronize. Select which options you want below, then select next. Put in an account name and display name, then hit done. If you have corporate calendar installed, then your calendar will synchronize and so will your contacts and email. Now you have push gmail, contacts, and calendar. Because exchange will only synchronize a month of emails, I also setup my gmail as an IMAP account so I still have access to my old emails. The android email app is not as good as the gmail app IMHO, but it is a temporary solution, and new emails seem to show up faster this way!

I didn't do it, the Above Member had figured it out. Credit goes to him. & All sync to Gapps need turned Off. as Exchange uses it's own sync & it's not apart go gapps at all.

Slight problem I'm encountering. It doesn't work for me at all. Using a G1 with AOSP17.
And btw, is it meant to be a '/' or a '\'?

Meh, it just won't work for me properly. I finally made it work but it slows everything down for some reason.

I tried this but it keeps telling me authentication failed. All details are correct, checked three times. Any ideas?
I have a problem with exchange... after I set it up, my emails don't come in to the mail app. I have tried sending a new email and it doesn't show up in the mail app. I have also allowed it to sync and it still does not work. No emails show up in the mail app. Is anyone else having this problem?
OK that's strange but after giving me authentication errors earlier it has now synchronised my calendar. Funky..
Google Sync over exchange officially only works in the U.S. That might be causing some of the problems.
so, i had a hotmail account set up on my htc mail app. mail came through with no problems, but any actions i took on the device didnt get reflected on the server. so if i read/deleted mail on the device, i had to do the same on the web inbox.
i switched to k-9 mail which now deletes mail on the server, but doesnt mark the mail as read once i've read it. something which i do quite often as i use my hotmail for online purchases, and i want to read an invoice but keep it for reference.
does anyone know an app that allows mail thats read on the device to be marked as read on the server?
muchos gracias!

My wife has a blackberry and uses hotmail also. I believe the problem lies in the difference between POP3/IMAP. Hotmail connects via POP3 and from what I gather that protocol doesn't involve much more than basically forwarding the messages to your phone. While IMAP (which Gmail is capable of using) allows the syncing of deleted items\read items\etc.

I had a blackberry before my android and was able to read and delete mail, mark mail as unread etc and it would be reflected in my hotmail inbox. its really frustrating as having the blackberry allowed me to manage my inbox completely without having to log into my hotmail and now i feel like im going backwards

Try this:
Setup a new account.
In the first screen, where you write your name and password, hit manual setup. In the next screen, select the last option (Exchange ActiveSync).
In the details put:
Server: m.hotmail.com
Username: your email eg. [email protected]
Domain: leave this blank
SSL: Enable this/use always
Certificate: SSL
It has some additional settings (sync contacts, calendars, etc.), select as needed.
Began testing last weekend after seeing this post. http://androidcommunity.com/forums/349480-post18.html
E-Mail is working good so far, have not used contacts and calendar sync. It pushes messages and syncs them both ways when necessary.

so so close!
firstly, thanks for the tip. it seems to be working, but the only issue is that it has constant sync failures. i've only had it up for half an hour or so and have been testing it out, and when it works - it works well. but the syncing issue could be a deal breaker if its not an time-isolated issue. so far i've had to manually instigate the sync when i know theres new mail, or i want to push changes back to the server.
will give it a few days and see. if its still buggy i dont see spending 12 quid on it as getting value for money.
Weird... It's been working perfect so far, maybe it has to do with the OS version you have on your device, I have Cyanogen's 6.1 RC1, Android 2.2.1. Anyway I was looking for a product called Exchange for Android 2.x, but it's $20 and this is not an urgent need for me.
BTW, why you need to expend $12 on this, it's free as far as I can tell
Hey folks,
I'm sorry this is probably a n00b question but I would like to sync my emails from my PC with my phone.
On the PC I use thunderbird to download all emails (got like 6 email accounts) to the pc and delete them from the server immidiately. (I've had accounts beeing hacked in the past because I left password emails etc in my inbox, so I started to delete them from server instead of leaving them on for more security - so I can't just "download them again" from the phone - I will need to sync the phone with the data from the PC. I could switch my email client program off course if thats needed, but I rather not let the messages lay somewhere online.
Can someone maybe explain to me how that would work or give me a link or smth?
It would be perfect if it would work both sides: Either I sync the phone with the PC or the PC with the phone, or a real sync where just the new emails get exchanged. (On the same time I'd also get this to work for my laptop but phone more important now since i got it heh)
I hope someone can help me.
you can't sync with EVERY email client..
it does sync with outlook/OE... I don't know about thunderbird tho. What you CAN try to do is change the settings to never delete emails from your server when downloaded to your computer and then sync so that when you delete them from your phone they'd be deleted from the server.
get my drift?
hmm well im used to thunderbird, but i dont have to keep using it necessarily. I'd change if it makes this whole syncing easier. Its been bugging me for a while that I didnt have my emails on my laptop but now i also need em on the phone.. so I wanna finally get this to work.
The method you described wouldnt work if I somehow download the emails to the phone first instead of the pc, it would work like u described, but if I'd rather work it in both ways, a real "sync".
With outlook you could do this yea?
Try using Gmail or Windows Live mail, its more compatabile with most wireless. Goto m.live.com or Gmail
well, if you use gmail you can easily keep it on both your computer and your phone and it would sync both ways.
Get a gmail account. Then forward all your email accounts to the gmail account. You can also set the gmail account to send out as one of the other accounts.
Setup the gmail account as an imap client in thunderbird or outlook. Create a folder under the inappropriate account named old emails or whatever. Move the emails stored in your local folders to the folder setup under the imap account (you can do it directly to the inbox if you prefer).
Setup gmail on your mobile device.
Say thanks.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Cleaner Explanation.
1) Create a Gmail account at Gmail.com (or skip this step if you already have one).
2) Log into the web versions of each of your email accounts. Set the account to forward all emails to the new gmail account address (typically these settings are found under the settings or Options menu somewhere on the page). If you would like to continue to use these accounts you can either:
a) Give Gmail permission to send emails as all the accounts or one in particular. (Note once in the mobile apps, you cannot choose different sender addresses, only the default one. You can however change from each address on the web interface). b) Set a forwarder and then specify to leave a message on the server.
3) Setup the gmail account you created as an IMAP account (use IMAP not SMTP) in thunderbird or Outlook.
a) You can find the Imap settings for desktop clients here.
4) Once the initial sync is complete, simply drag and drop the emails from the old inbox to the Gmail account's inbox (listed in a tree menu under the IMAP.Gmail.Com listing.
5) You can now set up this email address as a SMTP or IMAP (IMAP keeps the emails on the server. This is a better idea in some cases as you have exact copies of emails on all devices you set them up as.
6) Say thanks
You can also manually do this for each email account you have, but that would take much longer and some companies do not allow or simply haven't moved to using IMAP yet (freaky right?).
Using the gmail way, you have all your emails from all your accounts plus the wonders of google. This is the easiest way to do it I can think of.
I hope my explanation is clean and clear.
thanks for the detailed explanation I guess I'll do it that way.
But the downside that you have to keep the mails on the server still stays this way. I'd really love the option to do a real sync how you expect a sync to be but I guess thats complicated or doesnt work?
I mean like.. when I'm at home .. I download the mails from my desktop pc over usb or wlan. Then I download new emails while I'm travelling or smth - and when I get back home I sync my desktop with the phone emails.
This must work somehow? I'd really hate to have to leave my emails on the server since I got bad experience with this.
I guess I'm just beeing paranoid - but I'm also perfectionist heh, so I'd love to try n get it going "the perfect way" - aka a real offline sync without usage of any server storage. (unless you count my desktop as a server..)
If you setup the system to use smtp on the phone it will dowbload the email, other than that i would suggest using a very good password.

if i go into emails it downloads them no problem, next time i go into emails it deletes the ones already there, yet i don't receive these emails on my PC either .Why is it deleting them and is there any way to stop it
Are you using the GMail client or the other one ("Email")?
If the latter, are you using POP/IMAP, or Exchange? If it's not Exchange, I'd suggest you embrace your GMail account - you can configure it to collect email from other accounts - and use the GMail app. This has the extra advantages that you have a central contacts list, and can view your emails on any computer with a browser too.
use the other email and its a pop account ,so are you saying use g mail and set up my pop account on there, already have my g mail account set up on the email appr
There is most likely a setting to remove the mail off the server when you pull it into the app, thus deleting it off your regular mail server, and why you aren't seeing it on your pc. I'd poke around the settings a bunch and see what is up.

I set up a few POP accounts in the appropriate client, but I think the only 'delete/remove from server' option was only when emails were deleted locally. I'm not sure about the default behavior - whether it is 'download and remove from server' or just 'download a copy and leave on server'.
checking in the client settings, it's under Incoming Settings, and the options are only
"Delete email from server -"
and the two options are 'When I delete from Inbox' or 'never'.
That tells me the client should NOT be removing/deleting emails from the server except possibly when you delete a mail from the inbox. IIRC, the default setting was 'never'.
Combat, do you perhaps have a client running on a computer somewhere that may be periodically checking and removing the mail from the server? This is a common thing with email servers - someone leaves an email program running on a computer which is set to download and remove mail from the server... then the mail doesn't show up on their phone.
Incoming setting were set as never delete mail from server so unchecked it and rechecked it again ill see what happens

There's probably a setting in the Email app for leaving mail on the server, but personally I get my GMail account to pick up mail for all my POP accounts.
You can configure GMail (through the web interface) so that you can send emails out as if from your other accounts too.
For example, if someone emails me at [email protected] then it gets picked up by my Gmail account. If I then hit reply, GMail will use [email protected] as the 'from' address. If I reply to an email sent to my gmail.com address, the reply will come from my gmail.com address.
So you don't have to mess around with 2 different apps, you have all your email in one place, accessible from anywhere, with a single contacts list. Win/Win.
