[Q] System UI keeps crashing - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hey guys,
I am currently running skyICS 4.2F6-2.6.1B and recently, my phone has been crashing alot. I am using the Touchwix UX and that has been crashing, but today the system UI has been crashing as well. I also noticed today that the battery life is significantly lower than what it normally is. The camera fails when I try to use it and the flashlight makes the system lock up.
Do I just need to reflash a new ROM? Before this, it was running perfectly. Could I just clear the cache and will that fix it?
Thanks

I would try clearing cache and dalvick first. If that doesn't solve your problem ...then full wipe & flash rom fresh . Good Luck

I would probably say reflash the ROM is the correct way to go.
**MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE ROM IN YOUR EXTERNAL MEDIA CARD PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE STEPS PROVIDED!!***
Wipe X3
format /system X3
format /data X3
format /cache X3
format /emmc X3
Then install the ROM you want to install.

On SkyICS 4.2F6, right around update 2.5 / 2.6 is when the system partition got max'd out. If you have TiBu, check your "system ROM" free space... if next to nil, you will start running into issues. Are you on the BaseR2 ROM, BaseR3, or Dragon? If BaseR2, you will need to free up some headroom on the system partition (/system/app). Search the SkyICS 4.2F6 ATT Development thread for previous posts about freeing up space on system partition (I posted on Development thread regarding this). If you're not on R2, you should have enough system partition space, and most likely this is not the cause of your problem.

I actually did run out of space when trying to move on with my updates, which is why I stopped there. I am not sure which items i could remove in the system partition so I also just left that. Any suggestions on which to get rid of?

It really depends on what apps you use / don't use. If you are on R2 safebase, and don't use "S-Voice" (since Sean added GoogleNow, he removed S-Voice from the R3 bases), start with removing it first. S-Voice is the "voicetalk.apk". I'd recommend first backing it up w/ TiBi (in case you want to restore it later), then using TiBu, uninstall S-Voice (voicetalk.apk). It's 30mb on the system partition and you can probably stop there. But if want to free up more space on system partition, SocialHub (SevenEngine.apk) is 8.5mb. I had removed 10 apps which freed plenty of space... but then at 2.8, I decided to reflash the R3 Dragon... really happy with it... no issues whatsoever.

I already removed S voice. I currently have 49.2MB free, is that good enough? Should I keep figuring what to delete? I would reflash R3 Dragon, but I just don't want to go through all the effort of recreating my home screen and my folders and such. :/ unless there is a way to save and restore that kind of thing.

49mb free should be more that sufficient to run without crashes. I think at this point your best best is to restore a recent nandroid (if you did one)... at least the last known good one where you were not encountering crashes and FCs. I use Apex Launcher which I really like, and it gives you the option to backup settings and homescreens. Other than these suggestions you might need to reflash. I'd recommend the R3 Dragon this time with the 2.8A.

Hmm... I've had similar problems when I upgraded to the OFFICIAL ICS update, and was the reason why I rooted in the first place. Now I'm running Jellybean and it's great
It looks like the I727 and ICS don't go along very well...

Is there already a Jellybean ROM for skyrocket? How stable is it?

It runs fine, but occasionally it shuts down randomly. Well, it hasnt for the past few days, but I'm keeping a close eye on everything. Also, I have no idea how to set the APN and the phone doesn't hve the right settings. I'm on Rogers and would appreciate any help
Otherwise, I really like it. The ROM is in the android development section of in the skyrocket section.

The problem with switching roms

So I'm pretty sure I figured out why a lot of us are having problems with teddys new rom. I'm guessing all of us have gone from rom to rom on this forum and I personally didn't have any problems untill I went from revolutions lightning rom to teddys touchmiuiwiz rom. I don't know why but I'm guessing something is incompatable with our backups between those two roms because teddys rom works perfectly fine untill I restore my apps and settings which are backed up currently with titanium backup from lightning rom. Once I do that my sd card starts acting weird and I get force closes loss of ringtones ect... so that's the only thing I can figure is going on :-/ I'm not sure what is causing the problem exactly but I'm pretty sure that's what the problem is.
Maybe someone can figure it out and fix it? This post might be pointless but I just figured I would share my thoughts and findings hence why I posted this in the general section.

The issue with nandroid restores is that they restore the full /data partition, rather than just the apps, it restores the data for each app, as well as the dalvik-cache. Wiping the dalvik-cache fixes most of the issues, but some apps are still older/different versions, or do not include the changes we have implemented in our rom, and therefore are incompatible.
The issue becomes that the restored apps are looking for something that isn't there in our rom, because they are from a different rom. You can always try wiping the data for the app that's FCing, but this is why we suggest using Titanium Backup, as it can backup just apps, rather than apps and data.

[Q] Need ROM advice

Basically I am looking for a ROM that is barebones, No extra crap installed (Facebook, All those lame widgets, etc) and that is good on battery life!
All I use my phone for is, Texting, Calls, Music, Web browsing, Camera and that's it. Google didn't help me very well.
What's the best ROM for that?

Hey just give you heads up and im sure others will most likely reply with the same thing just search for some roms that will give you what your looking for but for and example and anyone correct me if im wrong but CM roms are like barebones.. Or you can simply remove all what you want out of the rom like uninstalling the apps/apks you can use the script thats floating around called ROM Cleaner. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050283&highlight=rom+cleaner
And battery life all depends on kernel for that rom radio&rils etc.. just really all on the user them self.. trust me there is alot of threads with the same idea what you have before this gets locked out.. look around 1st

Ok people here have been asking this same question over and over and over again. What may be awesome to one may be crap to another its all on how you feel about the roms. You need to try out a few for size as far as apps are concerned you can use titanium backup to remove or freeze. Tho we help each other here this is a search and learn sight not a hold my hand and lead me sight. So please search before opening a new thread.
Hmm I think I here Zels footsteps.

What I would suggest is try out a few roms out and get a feel of them but give them about a week of use so you can truly feel them out. Once you find one you truly like or are comfortable with use titanium backup and delete all the apps you want out of it to make it barebone to your liking. But remember dont delete anything that is system critical, if you are unsure of it use titanium backup to freeze app and see if it causes any issues with the phone before you delete it. If it does you can just unfreeze the app. Its a trial and error learning experience we all been there at one time or another. Welcome to XDA and enjoy the learning experience.

I did that with CM7 a while back, Deleted pretty much everything I didn't need.. I uninstalled an app I no longer used (market App) and it bricked my phone for some reason. Right now I have / am trying out Coredriod.
What's a good tutorial or list of system apps (IE: Calculator, Calender, etc) I can delete without bricking my phone?

Your not bricked. Try reflashing the rom but do a full wipe. Go to recovery
1. Wipe factory
2. Wipe cache partition
3. Advance>Wipe dalvik cache
4. Go back
5. Wipe partition (except sd card)
6. Install from sd card
7. Choose zip from sd card
8. flash rom
When you try to flash a rom on top of another ALWAYS do a full wipe NEVER just flash.

If you are still boot-looping.Then you can take the battery out and then go into recovery panel and do full wipe before installing the new ROM.

Same here - haven't found a solution yet...
Did you guys restore system data with titanium backup? That causes problems when com from gingerbread rom ( or stock rom) to ics
Every post I've read regarding the upgrade to ICS has specifically stated to NOT restore system data from previous versions of the ROM. If you search the forums there is info on how to fix this if you've made that mistake but I believe it involves a full system wipe then re-flash.
That's too bad
Well, that's too bad
I am using a Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 and there were a lot of ROMs which had exactly the same problems!
My recommendation is to look for another ROM! There are a lot of awesome ROMs :good:

I used to have frequent force closes and used alogcat to determine that it was due to running out of memory. It wasn't that my phone had insufficient memory, but the way memory was used. For me, I first increased the dalvikvm-heap size in build.prop from 32MB to 48MB and that solved the force closes. Then I downloaded and ran the V6 Supercharger script (for better memory management) and that got rid of the frequent launcher redraws. Now my phone is quick and a joy to use I think(?) ICS requires more memory than Gingerbread so maybe these fixes might work for you too. I assume your phone is rooted by the sound of it so it can be done. Good luck!

Resize the system partition?

I am running a stock image on my N5 with root and need to add an apk into the system partition but the problem is that I have only 4mb left on there and the apk does not fit. Is it possible to resize the partitions and:
Still keep your data
and/or
Allow for OTA installations down the road?
Short answer is no. And you certainly can't do it without wiping everything else. Repartitioning Android partitions is not for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of knowledge and can easily brick your device.

Stock Google OS comes with a ton of crap on /system that really belongs on /data. You delete all those apps, then download them from the playstore. 300ish MB free on /system.
I wrote a script to do this here, or you could use @vomer CleanRom that gets rid of some crap. My script (from memory) keeps stock keyboard, stock camera, and a stock launcher. Everything else is gone and can be reacquired through the playstore, the way it should have been from the beginning.
If it bothers you, could could use TiBu to back up that app data before you delete them, then restore after playstore install.
Who cares about OTA? Really not of concern.
Thank you for putting me on the right track. What I wound up doing was converting a couple of the apps that are baked into the stock ROM from system to user apps with TiBu. Worked like a charm!
awesome ...

Same issue with CM13
I'm facing low system space when installing CM13.
The ROM installs correctly. However, when I go to flash GAPPS, I get a low system error.
How can I fix this?
Flash back to stock, perform a factory wipe, flash twrp, flash cm and gapps. Hopefully, those fixes the issue.

NoobROM 4.4.4 CM/AOSP based KitKat for Blaze 4G

Hello. This is my first ROM, based off of Cyanogenmod. A few Cyanogen features have been removed, and some non-CM features have been added. I am still testing it, but it seems to work fine for my t769.
WILL NOT WORK ON EXHILERATE
If any moderator wants me to remove DL links and close thread, notify me immediately.
This is my personal ROM, I build one after every CM nightly that comes out. I'm just uploading it here/my Dropbox for anyone who wants the same experience.
What exactly have I done?
-UberKernel v1 1.89GHz stock clock
-Removed CM's annoying Statistics and Bug Reports
-Removed stock CM apps
-Added ES File Explorer Free in place of CM File Manager
-Added Kernel Tuner
-Added stock 4.2 AOSP Launcher in place of Trebuchet
-Replaced CM's Torch with the one from CM10 (now has strobe, a useful feature that was removed in KitKat)
-Replaced Browser with AOSP 4.1.2
-Added Anthony Resario's Afterburner theme
-Replaced CM's boot screen with a generic Android boot screen
-Replaced DeskClock with the AOSP equivalent from 4.1.2
-Removed some live wallpapers
-Added Link2SD system app
How to install
1. Make sure you have a recovery installed. If not, I will be uploading an Odin-compatible package in the future. I recommend Philz Touch, although a different CM based recovery will work. Not tested on TWRP, use at your own risk.
2. Make a NANDROID backup.
3. Wipe Data
4. Wipe /sytem
5. Wipe /cahce
6. Factory reset
7. Install ROM
8. Wipe the Dalvik
9. Factory reset
10. Reboot, and keep an eye on it. Apps will prompt for SU on boot.
11. After it's done, reboot and install GApps if you want/need them.
DISCLAIMER:
I am not responsible if you brick, fry, or otherwise destroy your device as a result of flashing this ROM. I will not claim liability or replace your device. All features included in this ROM are properties of their respective owners, I merely assembled them into one place.
Changelog:
1/10/2016 - First beta/testing release
Planned features:
-Better DSP manager
-New default background
-possible shutdown sequence
-Flash Player support
-maybe 2.0GHz clock rate if it doesn't burn my device
-Tweak battery/4G
-Button light fix
-AOSP KitKat launcher

I'm behind on a nightly, so not as good as normal. Right now, my Blaze hasn't had its 4 year old battery replaced, but when on standby with WiFi, min/max frequency set to 192/1890MHz and Governor set to Samsung with a ROW I/O scheduler, get about 3 days until it completely dies. The temperature sensor in my battery is shot, so I can't accurately report temperatures until I can find a decent OEM battery replacement. WiFi doesn't work properly, which is a bug in the kernel I have to fix in the updater script. My suggestion (until I fix various things with my ROM) is to download the latest CM nightly, flash UberKernel V1, and use Link2SD to uninstall all of the CM bloatware. If you're feeling adventurous and daring you can flash this and report the results.
Im on Validus by GZRoms 4.4.4 and the thread seams to be closed.... Cant ask questions. I have NO more internal space, with barely any apps installed. It partitioned my internal to have its on storage, built in SD, and my ACTUAL external SD. I cannot figure how to move apps to SD, it will not work, Ive tried the app2sd fixes, ive gone to apps and enabled 'App moving' and rebooted. No dice. Any help?

My battery life is terrible most times on Validus 4.4.4 as well, even with the UBER 4.1 kernel. Thats why i asked you about the battery life on yours cause I need more. Have you used that 4.4.4? That one and yours seem to be the only ones and I need to be able to move apps2sd so I can actually have the apps I want. Literally have only 10 apps installed probably.

Try Link2SD, and try my ROM. I just released a new nightly, the WiFi should work, if not I need to update it again.
Also, the Blaze only comes with 1.4GB of internal storage. I use PA GApps pico, and install anything else I actually use (like maps and Hangouts Dialer). GApps can easily take up massive amounts of space. Battery life has been fixed in my latest nightly. Please try out the ROM and see what it does. You have to do a FULL SYSTEM WIPE, except for EFS and RADIO partitions. I use PhilZ Touch. app2SD is frankly a terrible app in comparison to Link2SD, which is included in my ROM. If you use the SAMSUNG governor and ROW I/O scheduler and the battery life still sucks, get a new battery. If you also constantly have 4G, Wifi, and Bluetooth as well as NFC on, that will definitely drain your battery. Open Battery Stats in Settings and tell me what uses the most battery. Turn your screen brightness all the way down.

If it's the Cyanogenmod setup wizard, I cannot help, as I said development has been halted until I can get another Blaze.
It if's the Google setup, boot the phone without flashing GApps a few times, finish the CM setup wizard, change a few settings, browse the web. After that then flash GApps and add an account through settings.
Another thing you can try is booting the phone in Safe Mode by holding the Vol+ and Vol- keys during boot.
I can't seem to be able to clear the defaults for Launcher so that I enable a new one. Am I missing something or is it just not possible?

Go to Settings and then go to Home, there you can change what launcher you use.

Sorry, I should have said, I tried looking there too, I don't have a home option anywhere in settings, not under personalization, or anywhere else that I can find.

Use Link2SD to make the launcher you want a system app and then uninstall the one I included. I just bought another Blaze (mine was stolen) so I will resume development as soon as it arrives.
Also, how do you like the ROM? Does everything function properly?
By the way, the thanks button is right at the bottom of all of my posts.

Havent used it much, everytime I try and install, I get the error of Setupwizard force close and can never set up the ROM. When is your Blaze arriving? Any chances we will get any new updates or advances? I will try and reinstall today.

I don't know when, probably next week and depending upon where CM source is at in development we might see NoobROM 5.1. I like KitKat better, and this is more of a personal project so it might stay KitKat with 5.1 APIs.
I might just scrap the CM wizard. It's pretty useless and only serves its purpose for new users.

Development has been halted as of now because some [email protected] stole my Blaze. I'm saving for a new one but I kinda need the $70 because its part of my food budget.

Hey I got it up and running pretty well, couple problems.... battery charged all night over night and my battery will not move past 26%. I dont think this is ROM specific as I was having weird battery issues before. I don't know what to do tho? And I have quite a few Force Closes of apps, including Facebook, and ESPN. They force close regularly and are pretty much unusable. Valadis ROM seemed a lot more stable. I love the link2SD tho it works almost flawless! I can now have my apps back, even tho 1 of 2 internal storage still shows only 20+MB free internal? Why? I have all my apps installed externally. Anyway, if we flash a different kernel, or the one from Valadus ROM, will it break the link2SD feature?? Idk what it is, but that ROM is smoother and less Force Closes. I'll keep running this and look forward to an update!

Slow down, speed racer.
To answer your questions:
Q. What's wrong with my battery?
A. The Blaze is known for battery issues. Go into recovery, wipe everything (SD card, system, dalvik, factory reset, and data+cache), and then flash a new ROM. If your battery issues persist your battery is shot. Order a new one online.
Q. Is your kernel stable?
A. It's as stable as I could get it. If you're having trouble with FCs, reinstall PA GApps 4.4.4.
Q. Will flashing a new kernel break the ROM?
Short answer: Yes.
Long, complicated answer: No.
Q. I have no space left.
A. To free up internal storage, make sure your SD card is at least 16GB, I recommend 32 for this ROM. Install all the apps you want and then get rid of the Play Store. I use Blackmart, and will include it in the next update.
