[Q] Tethering workaround? - Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

Recently switched to this phone and I use the tethering only on my nexus 7 but recently got blocked. It happened during a ROM switching. Any workarounds?

This work for tethering to android tablets. Use titanium backup, freezing tethering manager and you ready to go. Don't work with windows laptop, i don't try yet with linux system. Of course you need root the phone.

Try Foxfi - installed it last night and it worked great.

Would this work with the Galaxy S Blaze...? Oh, just realized that we are in the GSB questions, so I guess it should work...
(meanwhile back at the ranch)
Errrrr! She's Alive!!! Alive!!! Foxfi worked on GSB rooted, cwd, or (whatever its called) recovery, with tweak 1.6.

An app called Wifi Tether works as well. Completely free. Just choose Samsung Galaxy S2 as the device profile.

Tried all tethering apps i can. WIFI tether is not working for me. I know foxfi has had some workarounds for other devices so I'm hoping its a behind the scenes fix.
With "Wifi Tether" and changing device profile to "Galaxy S2" Wifi tether does not work
super user is granted then via the log i get
Loading WIFI driver: Done
Stopping AP... failed
Stopping WifI interface... Failed
Reloading Firmware... Failed
Starting AP interface... Failed
Configuring AP... Failed
Starting AP... Failed
Configuring IP-Address... Failed
Enabling Nat Rules... Failed
Enabling IP Forwarding... DONE
Tethering now running... DONE
Then the app appears to be working but can not be seen as a hot spot.
Now to the heart of my question. I've been going threw it with Tmobile. I have been paying for the 10GB data plan since they throttled me the first time last year but this week they switched me to the new unlimited data plan. Now i've been asking over and over again what's the difference if one costs so much more. There answer is "we are phasing out the old metered plans" everything i read says they are blocking tethering. Are any of you on that unlimited plan an able to get tether to work? Thanks for the help.

Try this: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Let me know how it works.

Well devil is in the detail. The new unlimited plans (as opposed to the classic unlimited plans) do not support tethering. I'm sure there will be a work around in the future, but for now that seems to be why none of the normal apps were working as they are for others. They have also done away with the 2GB plans that support tethering. so your options are 5GB and 10GB.
With the appropriate plan FOXFI still does not work in wifi mode but "WIFI Tether" works fine as described above.
"WIFI Tether" seems to only work when tethering is enabled on service plan. Took me 3 hours on the phone and 3 service changes to confirm this. Would love to know a work around though so i can save $30/ month

You can go into tb and freeze (I think) tethering provision. This worked for me..

That is strange as I just renewed my plan a few months ago and got the 2GB unlimited. I tether just fine. My friend's iPod used my wifi tonight no problem. I used the built in wifi tethering on cm10 though. I used this wifi tether app before I moved to this phone. What firmware you on? Stock?

I'm on CM10 current nightly build. If your on the old 2 gig plan from 2 months ago you could have tethering. They told me for the last few days that its not available any longer. Not in the web page any longer either

Yea I am going on my second term with them as well so it could be my previous 2gb unlimited from 2 years ago. Well... lets try and get past it old Tmo. I'll post you a few things, and lets try.
PdaNet 14 day trial to test, there is an option to hide tether as well.
WiFi Hotspot & USB Tethering Another free/paid version thing....
Wireless Tether Older version of the earlier one I posted. Free open source.
WiFi Tether (new one) Try this one again and change the device profile settings to Galaxy 2, generic ICS/JB (wlan0), and generic ICS/JB (wlan1) and see if it makes a difference.
Does it have to be WiFi tethering? Could you USB tether? Also I was reading up around and it seems if you change your PC's user agent to android you don't get denied at all. Check here and here to see how it works and a few addons to help if you still have issues. Hope this helps.

WIFI tether =/= tethering
Everyone who has an android phone should be(read: is) able to tether internet through wifi connection
.
What everyone WANTS to do is tether through 4G T Mobile unlimited data.

Did you read any posts here? We all know he wants to tether his 4g, OP is asking alternatives to getting around the Tmo block. Tmo has ways of blocking tethers now and likes to use it. We are trying to find if these apps above trigger the block or if using an android user agent helps. BTW, OP did these work for you? Try the user agent switching on the pc's side and lmk please. Also, does USB tethering work for you?

I found this on another thread, I can confirm it works as intended.

I did this too on my stock, unrooted Blaze (disabled the Tethering Provisioning app) and the built-in mobile hotspot works fine.
I don't understand why third party apps are necessary. Does mobile hotspot not work on custom roms like CM10?

Ahhh sorry for the interjection then. I see what you're saying here. Much thanks for the assistance. Kept on reading stuff about wifi tethering not working, and then I saw you post about your success.

Yeah, this is pretty useful to me. I have been having a lot of downtime at work lately and sometimes I want to read an article or go to a site that I wouldn't from my work computer. I can do it on my ebook now and use the larger screen, and it's also a lot more incognito than using the phone.

Tethering Work Around
Im using easy Tether Pro with the Truly Unlimited Plan (No Throttling) You can't get tethering on this plan but it is truly unlimited. Here is a way around the Tether Block. If you use windows you will have to change the string in the browser. If your a Linux User you just instal easytether to your phone and download the Linux Package from the Website. Next turn on easy tether on, on your device, then open a Terminal and type "easytether connect" you can use Chrome, Chromium and Firefox without changing the string.....I mean Android is a somewhat distro of Linux. Your carrier will think you are using chrome from the device, they will never tell the difference. Instructions to do so are on Easytether's Website. This is the best way not have to worry about throttling and be able to tether at pretty fast speeds (Faster than the phones browser) . Plus it was cheaper than my 5gig I was on ($30 now instead of $35 for 5gb)

[Q] Going absolutely nuts trying to tether TF to my captivate

Hi Guys,
In the last three days I've learned how to root my captivate, side-load apps, installed barnacle and wifi tether, all in the hopes of using my TF while on the road with my Captivate.
Unfortunately I cant get BT or Ad Hoc tethering to work.
I get the paired but not connected error when using BT
My TF is 8.2.3.13 so I can't root (without downgrading to 8.2.3.9 which I'm kind of afraid to do).
Does anyone know if I need to install a custom rom on my captivate in order to get the BT to tether?
I've probably read 100 threads in hopes of getting this to work, but at this point I might have to return the TF and get an ipad (yuck) just to get some connectivity for working on the road.
Any suggestions would be very very appreciated.
Regards,
wunshot
I'm assuming you want to use internet from your phone to tether to the tablet correct? Installing a custom rom is one way of achieving this. I use cognition rom which comes with the ability to tether through wifi. You need to activate that on the phone and have the tablet connect to the phone's wifi network.
I'm not sure if you were doing this but you cannot create an ad hoc network on the tablet and connect the phone to it to tether. The phone has to be the host and the tablet the client.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You don't want bluetooth. SirSid is on the right track suggesting the custom ROM although there are other ways that might not be as simple.
You want to turn on Mobile AP (Access Point) which turns your Cappy into a wifi hotspot and you're good to go. Go check the Captivate forums on how to achieve Mobile AP without much trouble. If you try to use it on a stock froyo cappy it will warn you about needing a tethering plan with ATT, you can easily remove the plan check using TiBu and it's all spelled out in the Cappy forums.

I use Captivate all the time and I can turn on the mobile hotspot and have my TF connect to it.
Atleast I'm not aware of being able to do BT tethering on a Captivate. I'm interested to know, if its even possible. Lets post a thread on the Captivate forum.
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, i plan on using my phone as the wifi host. I will give that cognition rom a shot. Im assuming the cognition rom creates the wifi network using infrastructure rather than ad hoc...is that the case?

Have no idea, I know it just works, it's actually a part of Android since Froyo, it just needs to be enabled and/or not checked if you don't have a tether plan.
I think cognition just uses the defualt android AP app. It creates the network in infrastructure mode if I remember right.
In any case, it just works
(Its located in Settings >> Wireless and network >> Mobile AP)
It supports bluetooth tethering as well, but the tablet would need to recognize it as a bluetooth modem. I have not tried that yet. Using a usb tether would probably be best if it works however. Using wifi tether drains battery faster than than my car charger can charge my phone. I still manage to loose battery even when its plugged in.
Sweet...I'll install cognition when I get home and see where I stand. Thanks for the advice...I'll updater you in a few hours with my results
OP, I have a rooted cappy with firefly rom on it. Super easy to do and its stable and allows for wifi hot spot without stupid ATT finding out you are tethering.
http://www phoenix-hq com/firefly/
It is a legit stable rom. I am able to wifi tether easily with my TF, no problems.
I'm on a stock froyo captivate Mobile AP works fine for tethering, can't figure out bluetooth. I tried for a couple of hours but gave it up Mobile AP works great, although I hear bluetooth saves battery?
EDIT: sorry it's a rogers captivate, i believe US is still on 2.1 nvm!

I don't understand why your getting into the Ad-hoc thing. Any rooted ROM you install on the Captivate, you can make your phone a Wifi hotspot via Mobile AP settings. That would create a Wifi network from the phone, and you can connect to that network in the TF.

[Q] wifi tether suddenly not working?

so I was tethering to my laptop, and everything was working fine, but suddenly it would only take me to a T mobile page that says I need a tethering plan....I have the unlimited plan where I get throttled after 5 gigs...the tether was working fine previous to today....anyone else having this problem?
I am rooted, and still on stock.....
I'm sorry I don't have the answer for this but I really would like to know this also. Tethering is a pretty big deal to me and I was told that when you are rooted, you don't need the plan. Really hope someone sheds some light on this.
so I figured a work around of sorts: you have to change your user agent string in your browser on your computer to the one on your phone....so then you get all the mobile sites on your computer....so not perfect, but usable
Wow that's not terrible

Only posting this because I haven't seen it in the few posts up for our Skyrockets.

Using Alien #4 on Motorola Atrix, I would tether w/o plan maybe a couple times per month and no warning.
I tethered nearly everyday for a few weeks in October, only went 1GB over my 2GB plan, and got the emails and texts telling me to add tethering plan IF I wished to continue tethering. This coincided with my Skyrocket purchase -not suggesting a connection, but coincidence maybe, or not.
They'll catch on I suppose by one using large amounts of data w/o historical habits supporting your recent surge in any given time period, APN or software left on phone, or even the possibility of CarrierIQ (suggested in another thread about tethering)

On the gf's Captivate, rooted and ROMd, she got a warning that they were going to automatically put her in a tethering plan, so I'm not sure how they knew. Does that have anything to do with Carrier IQ??
Do I have to root the phone to tether without the regular menu? I tried to do it and it tells me that I don't have a plan. I would like to know if there is a possibility to change the way to create a hot spot without have to use the regular menu and not to have to root the phone.

Not any way that I know of without root. You need root to use Titanium Backup. You need TiBu to freeze tethering manager. So without root I believe you're stuck.
Is there no ROM out there that provides free tethering for ATT? I was about to install the ICS 2.3.6 from rootzwiki, but will hold off if there is something with free tether and it doesnt...
If there isnt, what is the point of getting any ROM/feature for tethering when ATT offers it anyways, I thought the whole point was to get it for free... although I guess if ATT tracks everyone's data usage, it would be hard to mask that... but with these genius programmers, I would have thought anything was possible... would be nice to get a little 20mbps wi-fi no matter I go....
It's not CarrierIQ or solely data usage that tells AT&T if you've been tethering; it's the UserAgent on your laptop/desktop browser. That's how they can tell that their data is being used through a computer browser and not a mobile browser. So even with these custom ROMs providing "free tethering", AT&T can still figure it out and send you the warning email/text, as I did in fact receive (on my Captivate). So unless these newer ROMs have figured out a different method, I would assume the same logic still applies - correct?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
This method worked for me (freezing tethering manager). But, then again, I rarely tether, and when I do, it's only for very short periods of time.
I've been tethering my skyrocket since I've rooted it and tethered my iPhone 4 before that. The worst thing that has happened so far is that i got a text message saying ive reached 5% of users Data. Nothing about tethering. I usually tether about 5 gigs a month.
Edit. I use tethering with the Alien rom.
So maybe it is by amount of MB's of transfer and not just software? I.e., if you dont use a lot, then you will get away with tethering... I wont use it often, probably like once a month when I am on the road and need my laptop and not at a wifi... then again with my crappy DSL I may be tempted to use it at home if it were invisible.

CM10 I know for sure has Wifi Tethering. And probably CM9.
Turn On Wifi hotspot for CM10 (Settings>More>Tethering & portable hotspot)
If you can connect to your hotspot, but no internet, check if your Mobile Data is on. (Settings>Data usage)
If that doesn't work, check your internet on your phone browser by going on Google or something.
IF THAT still doesn't work, go get an Wifi Tethering app somewhere on the App Store.
If still doesn't work, Reflash your ROM or try a different one.
And no, it doesn't (well..shouldn't) matter what data plan you have..
And FIY, This should be in under General, not Android Dev.

FoxFi all of a sudden not working!

A few people have had the same issue, so I thought I'd start a thread on this disturbing new development. Was there some kind of update that FoxFi hotspot will not activate? No changes in settings or anything. Was working fine yesterday. Any ideas?
Same problem for me

A few people have had the same issue, so I thought I'd start a thread on this disturbing new development. Was there some kind of update that FoxFi hotspot will not activate? No changes in settings or anything. Was working fine yesterday. Any ideas?

Exact same problem for me. I changed literally ZERO settings and have not updated a single app today at ALL (my phone is not set to update apps automatically, I have to do it manually so I am POSITIVE that Foxfi has not updated at all). I wirelessly tether with Foxfi literally every single day for work and it worked fine for me this afternoon at approx. 2pm EST and when I went to use it again at approx. 4:45pm EST it did not work, I got the "You need a subscription" error when turning on the hotspot. I even uninstalled the app and reinstalled and it still doesn't work. I am rooted and on AOC3 if that helps.
Any ideas? Or any other app that will work besides installing a custom rom? This is a MAJOR disappoinment.

It's a huge disappointment considering I deliberately lost root to take the 5.1.1 update, thinking Fox Fi would work just fine for ever. Seriously thinking of reactivating either my old S3 or m7. The USB internet share works fine, but I need the WiFi tether to work so I can use my printer. A dark day indeed.
Just came across this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/verizon-killed-foxfi-tethering-people-t3253649
Working wifi hotspot alternative to foxfi on Verizon S6
Foxfi also stopped working for me yesterday. I found an alternative app however and verified it works on a Verizon Galaxy s6. On google play store for $3ish... "WiFi Tether Router"
It requires root, so not everyone will be able to use it. I am on a rooted Verizon s6 G920VVRU1A0E2. Other people in the comments of that app are also indicating its working on Verizon. that firmware is the newest I am aware of that can be rooted.... but i have not checked in a while so maybe you can root the updated versions now. Either way its worth going back to a slightly older version for a wifi tether that works.
Hey guys I'm having the same problem with my gs6 on version I still have unlimited data tho so what are my alternatives? Anyone have a link to how to root my GS6 and is Wifi Teather Root the only way to go after Imy rooted.
That's it.... This phone going on swappa going back to s5 and will order a nexus 6p or 5x
For anyone who really needs their cell phone internet on another machine, I have a temporary work around solution. I was able to use the USB Tether with PDAnet+ and run a shared connection over ethernet to my other devices. (In this instance I'm running an ethernet cable from my PC to my Xbox One). You want to go to the Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings and open the interface that represents the connection between your PC and your USB tether. Go to the Sharing tab and check the box for "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection." Then run an ethernet cable from the PC to any other device that also has an ethernet port and it should work. I have not tried running a router from this ethernet cable, but it may be worth a shot. That is all I needed to do on my Window's 7 PC. I also tried turning my Macbook Pro on Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 into an access point and going to the Sharing settings and setting it up, but even though my Xbox and other devices could see the AP they were not able to access the internet. I hope these instructions might get someone out of a jam!
Edit: To clarify, my Verizon Galaxy S6 is not rooted and is on the latest software update released by Verizon.

I can confirm that "Wifi Tether Router" app does work. It seems to take a long time to turn it on/off each time, but it does work. I do wonder how long it will work though until Verizon blocks this too......
Tethering works fine with Root. I don't think there is a way for vzw to block that

Why are you using a third party app if you're rooted? The native tethering app is the most reliable and doesn't need to go through a vpn.
I suspect verizon blocked the vpn that foxfi is using.
Well, my S6 has now achieved the status of really expensive paperweight. I just reactivated my old S3 still bootloader unlocked and rooted, now running 5.1.1 AOSP ROM, using native WiFi hotspot, no Verizon bloatware, no ads, simple and effective. Much better experience, and it still remarkably has developer support.
Anyone want to buy a nice paperweight?
J/k I'll most likely hang onto my S6 on the off chance some genius is able to unlock it someday when the planets are aligned just right.

I'm rooted and the native hotspot doesn't work. Says you need a subscription. I'm sure if you have a custom rom it works fine tho...

You don't need a custom rom to enable it. I believe there is some flashable .zip that would do it.

Try highonandroid .com/android-apps/how-to-get-free-wifi-tether-on-rooted-android-att-t-mobile-sprint-verizon/
Worked on my rooted s4 running kitkat (no spaces)
Hey guys FoxFi is working fine again. I did not update it or anything, just opened it and now it randomly works again.

I was posting from a phone in a hurry so didn't look into it further. Here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...od-hotspot-native-enabled-s6-varient-t3104993
Beats foxfi having to tunnel all traffic through vpn.

Thanks for sharing! I really need to get up to speed on this device more often, I had no idea anyone made that and to be honest at first I assumed you didn't know wtf you were taking about (sorry haha). Just tried it and it is certainly much nicer than the 3rd party apps. I didn't think this phone really even had development support.

Just did this, seems to have flashed fine (first time using Flashfire) and seems to be tethering just fine. Thank you!
