This is my second samsung phone and the set up is so much different. In my epic touch 4G it was like the kernel and the recovery were always together but on the s3 it is separate like my HTC was. Why was the epic so much different. I thought it was just a samsung thing. This s3 is way easier to go back and forth between roms. The touch 4G was a pain having to Odin back to older version of kernel/recoveries to go to ics ad now the s3 the recovery stays and does not change with kernel? Any insight at all would be appreciated

Different phones, different processes that's about all there is to answer your recovery question. I'm coming from a Droid Incredible so I have no idea what you're talking about btw. If you flash a rom on the GSIII, there is a kernel that flashes along with it because it's included in the rom zip. The alternative is if you want to flash a kernel that you would like to try at a later date, boot into Recovery and flash that kernel file from its respective thread.

On the same for some reason the recovery was attached to the kernel for some reason

I was wondering when you flash a kernel on the captivate do you need to use the power button. My power button dosent work amd I cannot find an alternative.

Hmm.. power button not working may lead you to some problems. But, I love android... there's more than one way to skin a cat! Grab sgs kernel flasher from market. If you have root, then you should be able to flash a kernel.. just make sure its compatible with whatever ROM your running.

I would try the warranty because it is hardware problem ...so samsung should fix out just odin one click to stock..... Btw you should have put in q&a because right section and would give better and speedier reply because people would see it as question

Sorry I didn't see q&a section. Mod or admin move it please. I have root, and I am running samsung 2.2. What kernal would u recommend?

Well the thing about kernels is different phones and different areas change the results. There is a stickie in the general section with most all the modems. Just rember that i9000 kernels must be with i9000 modem and same with i897 (captivate)... I personally love cognition with it's stock feel. but with rom and modem/kernel there is no best ... Btw if you would have made a thread like that they get locked quick. As always pm the leezrd if need more help

I would totally want to flash another rom. Even if i try restart to recovery. But I'm pretty sure you need the power button to get out of recovery. I don't have those screwdriver to unscrew my phone

No problem. There's no way unless you flash a custom ROM that's as closed to stock as possible.
Sent from my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 4G LTE
^ agreed! flash a custom stock rom in recovery such as beans or synergy...thats as close as you will get to stock without using odin.
Took me awhile to figure this out.
And what I found out is you have to flash one of the stock roms before the kernel or it won't work. You have to be unlocked of course. Flash any Rom in cwm then after it installs and your still in recovery flash the stock kernel. Here's a link to the kernel

So here's the deal, I'm using the gt-i9210t and I need CWM but due to some unknown issue (I think my download mode is faulty) I can't flash it via Odin. So I was wondering if anyone could put together a flashable cwm through recovery like they do with the galaxy aces. Thanks

I doubt if anyone here can help you, as we are using the sgh-i727.
Totally different device.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
that's why I posted here . My device has very little development ATM and what we are using all comes from this phone. So cwm for the skyrocket will be compatible with me.

I found this in another forum and thought I would share it with you guys. I can confirm that this works on our device. I am running F4K.
This mod is a flashable zip which was created by biohazrd51 and I. It changes the 'H' icon in the status bar to the '4G' one. See below for all devices.
Also, you will lose this mod every time you update the rom. I will take no responsibility if you magically transform your phone into a new device.
That said, all you need to do is:
1. Download the attached update-signed.zip to the root of your sd card.
2. Reboot into recovery, and make a nandroid backup, incase anything goes wrong. (It shouldn't)
3. Then, select install from sd card, and click on the update-signed.zip.
4. Reboot and enjoy.
Any questions,feel free to ask.
*Edit* blk_jack has put together a flashable zip that'll modify the H icon to 4G on any ROM (hdpi only). This should also work in JB, though we haven't tested it. This doesn't actually replace the SystemUI.apk, it just replaces the icons inside it and re-zip/zipaligns it.
Download and flash through recovery:

If we have helped you, don't forget to press thanks!

Where is this update.signed file you speak of? The link in the OP says nothing like that when downloaded or added to sd card. D/l'ed it anyways and it kinda fk'd my phone. Went into TWRP and installed it. Fixed permissions and wiped cache/dalvik. Now I have no dropdown menu that the SGS4G normally has and none of my themes are working. Just a generic black background throughout. I don't think this works on our device. JS. I'll nandroid back and retry it. BTW, I'm running Ravers OMFGCM9 with a padded KJ6 modem with hefe's kernel.
I have had that happen once not sure what rom I was on I just did fresh install to fix it.

[MOD][UNIVERSAL][1/22/13] H to 4G or LTE icons - Updated!!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
For the people saying it doesn't work... were you possibly using the LB6 modem that doesn't actually display H? If so... your phone probably needs to display H for the H to be replaced with 4G or LTE. It wouldn't be the mod failing to work... but the modem passing incorrect information to the status bar-display.
Kj6 modem, reverted back to RemICS, until slim gets wf hotspot fixed, will test update then.

So I've been trying to find why ROM manager should not be used with this device and I just see that I shouldn't. I came from a MyTouch 4G where that or 4EXT were standard.
What symptoms does ROM manager cause?
I've noticed that any ROM I try to flash that doesn't use aroma installer fails at checking the update package. Is this one and how do I avoid it?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium HD app
Rom manager does not support our device so any recovery you flash is going to result in a bricked phone. It's just that simple. Even after installing the correct custom recovery, stay away from it because you won't find any compatible roms either. Not to mention that in order to flash a rom with rom mangler you first have to flash a recovery so it knows which roms to look for.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I have ROM manager on my phone already. Hasn't seemed to brick it yet. I just can't flash ROMs through it unless they are packaged with aroma. But wiping works fine.

How are you using it at all? Doesn't it prompt you to install a recovery?

He will learn.....soon to be a statistic, wanting to know how to unbrick his phone.
I'm more than prepared to fix a brick.
It flashes through the market app fine using the i9000(?) option. I can then reboot into recovery fine and flash/wipe/mount just fine. Though the model mismatch might also be causing the issue where I can't flash anything not packaged with aroma.

Your lucky flashing that recovery should have soft bricked your phone. This is not the i9000. That's the galaxy s international version of the phone. Then there's the t959 vibrant. And the t959w for wind Mobile. Which are all slightly different. Like i said really lucky. Sooner or later it's likely to burn you.

I know this isn't the I9000. Perhaps I should consider dusting off my coding knowledge and make a compatible recovery.
This phone is so much different than my old HTC glacier... -_-

Given that CyanogenMod is dumping ROM Manager, it seems like energy could be better put elsewhere.
