This may be a dumb question but until Google Voice allows phone calls from it's app is there any way to use the Note 10.1 as a phone? I've heard of grooveip might be a solution but haven't really looked into it. I searched and can't seem to find any info on this subject for the 8013 versions. Any insight would be great thanks.
Im using Talkatone with my google voice number. I can txt and do voice calls. Works like a champ
Skype should also work if you have some money loaded on your Skype account.

Hey guys I’ve been looking for a good VoIP caller for my phone that uses my sprint number for a while now, and I finally found one and I would like to share it with everyone

It is a paid app, I found it on the market and I believe it wasn’t any more than 5 dollars.
set up:
I integrated Google voice on my account keeping my sprint number
I then downloaded Google voice on my phone and set it all up.
Then I downloaded groove ip and signed in.
you have options on when to use groove ip.
i have it auto start and set to ask when placing a call.
there is no battery drain when on standby.
obviously it uses some battery when placing or receiving calls
ive used it for a few days now, and i love it.
texts also work with the google voice app
Now you can use my phone even if you don’t have service as long as there is wifi !!
What about mms? I have Grooveip as well, but I'm hesitant to port my number completely to Voice. I use Voice for the voicemail and voip only... I use my Sprint number for everyday calling to other cells and sms/mms
Mms doesn't work on just WiFi, but is does on the cell network. I have no problems with it at all. Everything works the same for me. I also installed the voice app and grooveIP on my tablet and I can now use that as a spare phone at home. I still have to set it up online to ring the tablet tho

With Google Voice and an app like GrooveIP you can use the Xoom to make and receive voip calls as well as texts. Of course you need a wifi connection, and the Xoom is rather ridiculously large to use as a phone, but it does work. As far as making regular 3/4G calls, I wouldn't know.
I can use Groove IP and Google Voice to make calls over 3G/4G, although
I never do... I purchased Groove IP thinking that I would use it all the time.
I've used it twice. I keep it installed though and sometimes activate it. It's just not practical. Now Skype I use all the time.
For some reason I can't get Groove IP to send the audio to my Bluetooth headset, or use the mic from it either. I've tried a bunch of different settings and none of my combos have worked so far. Emailed the developer, but he hasn't had s solution either.
What sucks is that the caller on the other end hears an echo since their voice is coming out the speaker and going right back in the mic. When I muted the mic and the caller talked, they didn't hear the echo anymore. So if I could get my headset working with it, I'd actually be able to use the app...
On another note, any findings on tablet/phone interactions? I know this was touted as a big feature for ICS, but the only thing I've heard of is transferring files via wifi, like Apple's airdrop..
I have had both for a while. With Skype I am paying for Skype out and Have a Skype number. No doubt Google voice is cheaper. I find that the call quality is better with Skype and Google Voice more often then not has a longer delay which some times is annoying. I use both over 3G and Wifi, mostly on 3G because I am only using a data plan and use Skype for my phone calls.
What is your preference and why. Yes I know Skype has that annoying speaker phone toggle issue on GB but thankfully not on ICS.
If you use something else for voip please post about it.

I'm using google voice/Groove Ip for calls too. It's great for international calls to Africa which is so much cheaper compared to Skype. It's good to hear that call quality is great on Skype. It's fine on Groove Ip but the delay is annoying as hell.
I recently bought a tablet and I want to be able to place calls through my phone by dialing on my tablet. I can access the dialer by creating a shortcut to the activity using ADW, but it says voice calling is not supported. I know cars can place calls remotely using their voice recognition, so it is definitely possible on the phone's end. Does anyone here know if there is a way to remotely trigger a phone call?

I've been a Tablet Talk fan but it requires that you be on same WiFi SSID or Bluetooth. The bluetooth is very portable, needs no data connection.

I am a customer of them, for my home phone, and I just found out they make an app. Not only for the android, but for ipad to as well.
Bit pricy, but I am already registerd with them for a two year contract for only $20.00..., all it offers is a either a "free" phone number or I can use the one I have setup for my home phone.
If this is not for you you can search for VOIP in the app market.

Was wondering if others had this problem. I have the $30 unlimited data plan with T-mobile. It gives only 100 voice minutes, so I thought I could use a VOIP as a solution. Vonage sounds great.
However, I can only use it over the data plan and not over Wi-fi. The cellular data is ok for browsing but the lag is annoying.
Wi-fi sounds like it should be better but I can't use wi-fi to call with Vonage. It just keeps clocking and then errors out. But as soon as I switch over the cellular data, it's fine.
Anyone else with this problem?

Have you checked into maybe using google talk as an alternative? You can register and get your own number for free and use voip for texts/voice. I used it a long time ago on my myTouch 4g and it was nice. I set it up as a work number for a few months before I got another line. It worked great.

Unless anyone else had better results google voice doesnt play nice with tmobile prepaid or family shared plans. The google # will work but the forwarding feature doesnt work for the voicemail part of the app.

I thought about it, but I would have to change numbers. And also, the app that interacts with Google voice isn't free.
Vonage is free and when you call using that #, it uses the number that your phone is registered under. With incoming calls, I just have to use voice minutes, but that's ok b/c I can just reject and call them back using Vonage.
So has anyone gotten Vonage to work with Wi-fi?

-Well, first off, I don't use Vonage or any VOIP. But try SmartDial. I read its description on Google Play but doesn't say anything about Wifi...go check it out. :silly:
-Try KakaoTalk if you want. It's like Vonage and Google Voice.

EDIT: Kakao is more...social media, with unlimited voice and texting. And Viber is another app you can choose from...even though you'll probably have to switch numbers. See if Vonage can forward calls to a new number
