[Q] phone capabilities with ICS? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heya,
just wondering, will the Xoom have support for being a phone with ICS? Texts are said to work in HC with some hacks, so one can hope for more?

With Google Voice and an app like GrooveIP you can use the Xoom to make and receive voip calls as well as texts. Of course you need a wifi connection, and the Xoom is rather ridiculously large to use as a phone, but it does work. As far as making regular 3/4G calls, I wouldn't know.

I can use Groove IP and Google Voice to make calls over 3G/4G, although
I never do... I purchased Groove IP thinking that I would use it all the time.
I've used it twice. I keep it installed though and sometimes activate it. It's just not practical. Now Skype I use all the time.

For some reason I can't get Groove IP to send the audio to my Bluetooth headset, or use the mic from it either. I've tried a bunch of different settings and none of my combos have worked so far. Emailed the developer, but he hasn't had s solution either.
What sucks is that the caller on the other end hears an echo since their voice is coming out the speaker and going right back in the mic. When I muted the mic and the caller talked, they didn't hear the echo anymore. So if I could get my headset working with it, I'd actually be able to use the app...

On another note, any findings on tablet/phone interactions? I know this was touted as a big feature for ICS, but the only thing I've heard of is transferring files via wifi, like Apple's airdrop..

[Q] Problem with integrated SIP calls in Gingerbread (yes, I tried searching)

Whenever I make outgoing calls to the 'internet number' in GB, I can't hear anything from whoever I call and he hear me either. I use Gizmo 5 as my SIP account and I know that the calls go through because Gizmo 5 deducts a penny each time I call someone.
I know that there are simple solutions like using SIPDroid or Google Voice Callback but I just want to use native SIP client over wifi (I'm only using SIP in places I have no signal). I've already tried searching in the forums and in google if this is a known issue and how to fix it (without using 3rd party apps) but I can't find anything (the only things I'm finding is how to set up SIP over 3g and that requires 3rd party apps).
Can anyone help me on this please? Again, I just want to use the built in GB SIP client. Everything works fine (I can receive phone calls fine) and the only problem is that I can't hear anything from whoever I'm calling and the person I'm calling can't here me either.
Thanks for your help!
check your router to see if it supports NAT or things like that.
even better, test it with you PC to see if you get 2 way audio.
it common to have 1 way audio on SIP calls. and its usually down to the router not able to route the RTP traffic back to you.

Thanks for the answer! This kinda sucks since I'm mostly using this in my university's library where I have no signal and I can't control the router. I'll try this at home though tonight.
When I receive calls in the library me and the other person can hear each other fine. How is that different from placing calls?

Anyone tried GrooVe IP yet?

I got this android app GrooVe IP but have had not been able to receive incoming calls. The outgoing calls works great. If this works seamlessly then it would be awesome.
This is just like the talkatone app for iphone, so one can have google voip without involving sipdroid and pbxes peering.
The issue with using pbxes is that it kills the forwarding of the calls to your gmail.
Okay, it seems the issue is that if you have gmail logged on computer and if the call gets forwarded to it. Then it doesn't come to the app on the phone.
I though that incoming calls would be forwarded to all logged in instance, but apparently it is not so. So you need to make sure to log out at other places.
Here is the forum to request bug fixes, make requests, and ask questions the developer is really willing to help out! http://androidforums.com/application-announcements/320717-app-groove-ip-google-voice-voip.html
Was not even aware of the app until this post. If this work.....WIN WIN WIN....got to try it!
I just installed it and it works right out of the box. Tried incoming calls and outgoing calls. Just had to make sure that my google chat on my laptop wasn't up (or that would have attempted to answer)
I was looking for this exact solution because I get crappy Verizon reception in my home. So if your using a profiling app like Setting Profiles to turn on your wifi, then it automatically comes on when your wifi turns on. There's no need to build it into your profiling app since it piggy backs off of your wifi on/off status.
The only thing I had to do was adjust the volume level of my mic because it was low. This is a setting built into the app so it's a one time adjustment.
Pretty slick app. Hope it pans out for me.
works great incoming and outgoing on my wildfire
new version 1.29
GrooveIp works great for both outgoing and incoming calls
Groove IP Disappeared from the Market..w/my new $5!!
Groove IP totally disappeared from the face of the Earth today(Android Market). I just paid $4.99 for the App two days ago and there gone. I know there not a fly by night app cause I have been hearing good things bout since my WinMo days. Is this want they do when they're updating the App? Is this normal or has me and many other been hood-winked??
(GrooVeIP) Groove IP is back - I bought it today. THEN I found Talkatone - which apparently used to be only for iphone. I'm curious which is better / why I would use one vs the other. They both look very nice, and both work. So - Groove IP vs Talkatone - which is better?
I tried both and played with both a bit. Groove is much more configuratble, and seems to integrate with the phone more (i.e. with the built in phone app history). But - they're both pretty well done frankly, and I don't know why I would pay the $5 for Groove IP (other than to get rid of the adds in Talkatone - which charges $8 to get rid of).
I'll be searching around to see if anyone else has compared them...

Making calls over IP via Gmail

What is the voice calling capability found in Gmail (on the desktop) called officially? I've been trying to search for solutions for this, but I don't even know what to call it- Google has SO many voice services now (chat, talk, voice, etc) that all sound like the same thing, yet aren't!
Here's what I'm looking to do:
I used the phone call function in Gmail to call abroad a few weeks ago via my laptop. I put about $10 into my balance there because it was cheaper per minute to call outside the US than Skype was. Worked perfectly.
Now, I'm trying to see if I can replace my netbook with a Tablet, so I'm trying to make those same calls from Android. I'll be honest, I'm wishing I had picked Skype to put the $10 credit on! Skype seems pretty straight forward- install it on the android device, make calls. But I've already spent the $10 on Google, so I'd like to find a way to make this work!
I tried going to Gmail from the browser and seeing if there was a link to install an app or something to make calls (like there is on the desktop side of things), but there is nothing there (ok, I didn't really expect it to work like that, but worth a try).
Is this part of a google chat application or something? Or is there no way to use that calling credit on an Android device??
I don't know for sure, but here are two options:
* Change the user agent in your Android browser to "Desktop" and use that interface. Though I am not sure if there will be issues with that.
* Use Google Voice. Which I am pretty sure is part of the same service they are using for Gmail calling. I use this for everything so I can read and send texts from my computer.

So, I tried the first one, but it requires a browser plugin to work (which is windows/mac only, so I can't get past that point).
Google Voice sounds like it could be it... but as far as I know, GV on Android doesn't actually let you place calls over IP yet, does it?
I thought it requires you to have a phone number it can call and then connect you via regular cellular minutes to the other party?
The device I'm using for this is a Tablet PC, so there isn't even a cellular radio or phone call system present. I'm trying to determine if I can replace a netbook for all the functions I use it for. This is something I know I can do on the netbook over wifi using the dialer in gmail, so I'd like to know I can do it on the Tablet as well. Does GVoice do that?
It's a paid app, but download GrooVe IP. It's the same thing that you did on your laptop, but with Android.
It is a third party app. But you get free, reliable calling anywhere in the US and get to use Google Voice's cheap international calling plans. [Edit: Over wifi, of course]

the new google talk for android 2.3.4 allows for vid chat (so probably just voice as well), over wifi or 3g. there are ways to get it on 2.3.3 devices, for some devices, maybe not all, don't know. but, i chatted with my buddy from my phone to his pc, so it's definitely a voip service
im doing google voice from my gingerbread phone (EVO 4G) as my primary line... i dont pay a monthly cell phone service... i get picture mail, txt messages, internet, and unlimited cell service.
Pbxes+Google Voice= Unlimited
I have no delay on my phone, it sounds better than sprint when i had it...
the only catch is; u have to have Wifi around... basically everywhere i go its wifi avaliable....

Is this only Google Voice for Gingerbread that supports that? Or is this a new feature in GV in general? Last I checked they didn't support it...
+1 for GrooveIP. Its much easier than the alternatives imo.

No, Google Voice does not do what GrooveIP does. When you have no cell coverage or lose cell coverage GV will drop your call or not place it, defeating the point. Even though you are on wifi you cannot place a call with GV w/o cell coverage. With GrooveIP you dont have to have cell coverage, you dont even need a sim.
I'm trying out this Groove IP right now. I must say I'm impressed by the call quality and the seemless functionality of the program. Not a huge fan of the constant notification, but I can live with it. OP it sounds like you should use this program, it's 3.99 in the market but boy is it worth it!

I setup pbxes + google voice and it seems to work most of the time. I'm interested to know how you are getting picture mail though - I thought googlevoice only supported txt messages.

You can turn off the notification in the settings :]
And OP, Android 2.3+ has built in support for SIP addresses. You register with a provider online, and they'll route your calls. It's a bit more complicated to set up, and typically costs (But sites like PBXes will give them out for free if you use them at least once a month). You typically get a US number and can set that up with Google Voice. Apps like csipsimple and sipdroid are alternatives for supporting SIP if you don't have Android 2.3+
I suggested GrooVe IP because it's a 1 step setup (Login with your Google account and you're done), and is identical quality to the calling through Gmail because there's no middleman. It's certainly possible to set it up for free using SIP instead, and there are some great guides on google.
I am getting picture mail because: I had a Google voice number before I got me Sprint number. Then I migrated my Sprint # to my Google voice acct.
Since then my Sprint service was disconnected because I recently lost my job, so I decided since I was out of contract anyway i'll say forget Sprint and use my Google voice acct. But back to how I got picture mail, when they disconnected my Sprint acct they didn't disconnect the Sprint number because it migrated over to my Google voice.
So when I call my Sprint number it forwards it to my GV number... But to get picture mail (keep in mind my Sprint acct has been disconnected for like a month) u have to have mobile network always on, and have wifi connected at the same time, if someone sends me a picture mail it'll come thru but I can't download the picture (not by Sprint network), but since I have wifi on it'll download the picture for me (Sprint can't officially cancel the number because u migrated over to GV, so now its your number for good. The only catch u can't respond to the picture mail and u can only respond thru the Google voice app.
Back in April sipdroid gave people a way to merge pbxes & Google voice... So since I upgraded to gingerbread, I no longer use sipdroid and I use the built-in internet call feature in gingerbread...
So I have service like everyone else with no problem, just no 3g or 4G service, all wifi on my phone.... Plus I can use my Bluetooth with my phone with no problem...
Hopefully talk understood that, if not PM me and i'll try to break it down...

[Q] Wifi Voip w/o cell service

Hi to make a long story short me and my now ex broke up but she turned off my cell phone the same day, Bi***, but i still have my phone and i had previusly set up a google voice account with my old cell number and i can make phone calls but i need to be able to recieve call as well but cant so any suggestions that are either free or really cheap would be great thanks for reading
T-mobile has some low cost plans, and currently offering a free SIM kit. You will need to unlock the phone but that's easy to do... Several threads here on how to do it.

You can receive calls on your google voice number if you have Talkatone or GrooveIP....both very easy to set up. A more complicated option is Sipdroid and similar programs

Alright i have set up a pbxes.org and sipdroid account i am able to send and recieve calls but after a minite or so i cant use my default dialer anymore just says "to make a call turn off airplane mode" did that and now it says "network unavailable" i want to use the default dialer any suggestions
For those of you who want the best quality out of your $30 smartphone plan, I made a 12-part video tutorial showing how to do it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9DzN1Pu6-Q&list=PLE_de-PBwrTSUMm-Y48aiOOHt_YyT69t0
It's much better than GrooveIP, Vonage, Talkatone, Pbxes.org, and everything else, especially those with the "one big green button" solution.
This method gives you HD Voice (G.722 codec), bettery battery life, and much better options for logging/blocking/recording. You can even set up hold music. Yup, I said hold music.
It used to be difficult to set up until I made it as clear as the nose on your face in the video tutorial (with actual commentary instead of techno music).
Spread the word if you do it and it works out for you. I believe everyone deserves high quality and limitless VoIP WiFi/4g calling.
If someone is using Google voice to connect it seems like the easier solution may actually be better in this case because you can't get that higher quality audio on Google voice. Every person I have phone discussions with utilizes phone numbers vice PBX accounts. I guess the people here aren't average. However, I wouldn't even think about going down a route that would take hours unless I could use the resulting features often. If I am wrong about being able to use the higher quality audio with Google voice, please correct me.
It would be nice to have an app that used Google voice for phone calls and SMS but also had call recording ability. I live in a state where I don't have to tell the other party I am recording them (for the purposes of legal record) unless I am being polite.

VOIP on the Nexus 5

My fiancée and I got ourselves a pair of Nexus 5's a couple of weeks ago, switched from Verizon to the T-Mo $30 100/Unlimited/5GB(Unlimited) plan and are now happily saving over $100 a month in the process. Yay us!
However, I've been struggling with VOIP with varying degrees of success. I've spent a considerable amount of time researching and configuring and tweaking, and I'd like to share my findings, as well as get some feedback on some things I may have missed.
One of the first things I tried was the Google Voice/PBXes/CSipSimple method, which produced terrible call quality. Everything from echo to background noise. No matter what I did (and believe me, I tried everything I could find) the call quality was just terrible. Changing the mic source, enabling mode audio API, changing the SIP audio mode, changing codecs, nothing really helped. Battery life was great, but the call quality was pretty much unusable. I could hear myself echoing, the other party could hear their own voice echoing, and/or there'd be too much background noise, or I'd be too quiet, etc.
Next, I tried Talkatone (paid for premium). Connection problems galore! I'd have several "lag fests" over WiFi (never tried it on LTE) even when I was sitting right at the router. Everything would cut out for about 30-45 seconds and then resume as if nothing happened, and this occurred 2-3 times over the course of a 10-15 minute call. Yes, I ruled out a connection/router issue. Battery life was "OK" but it wasn't as good as it was with CSipSimple.
I then tried GrooveIP (paid). Lots of echo here. Again, no setting or combination of settings really seemed to get rid of it. Tried as I might, the echo was always there. Battery life was on par with Talkatone.
Next, I decided I'd go a different direction and tried Skype. The voice quality was much improved, with no echo, but complaints of background noise, especially while on speakerphone. This has been passable, though not "ideal" (I know, VOIP isn't perfect). The big issue with Skype has been the absurd battery drain. A 30 minute call drained my battery by almost 20% and Skype was topping the charts by a long shot on the battery usage.
I know there are other options out there such as Viber, but I've not seen a whole lot out of them in terms of reviews, etc. I may just end up trying Viber and seeing how it pans out, but the options are starting to run out.
I know part of the problem is the same one the Nexus 4 had with the microphone(s) but, I'd like to think I just might be overlooking something. If anyone feels they've "solved the problem" please share your settings, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels as though they're banging their head against a wall here.

Viber works well for me and I only hear a slight echo if I'm talking with Nexus 4 users. Give it a shot. Tango might be worth a try, too. Good luck.
Well, I believe Csipsimple is the best voip client available. So, you'll most likely want to go back to your first solution, but replace pbxes with Callcentric, voip.ms or another voip provider. I've tried everything you did as well (plus a few more options) and with the exception of Skype, found the quality to be unacceptable. What I'm suggesting won't be free, but the cost is extremely low. Actually, voip.ms could be a very good solution for you. You would establish and fund one "account", but set up separate "sub-accounts" for yourself and your fiance. If you wanted to use GV exclusively, you could then purchase a couple of DIDs and set up GV to forward to them. I use an app on my phone called Groove Forwarder that changes my GV forwarding settings based on my data connection. If I'm on LTE, etc..., it forwards to my T-Mobile number. When I'm connected to Wi-Fi though, it switches to my Flowroute (another voip provider) number. Also fwiw, you can use voip over LTE if you want. Being in a moving vehicle set up that way will cause issues however.

Yeah, I also tried the Callcentric+PBXes route for the iLBC codec, which didn't seem to help. I'm not entirely convinced it's the PBX provider that's at fault, as I don't have these weird audio issues with CSipSimple+PBXes/Callcentric on my "home phone" (separate Google Voice account) which is an old DROID Incredible 2. Voice quality there is fine.
I did look into voip.ms, but when I signed up (late at night), they forced a "manual authentication" on me (why, I don't know) and I needed to contact support. I tried logging in the following morning, only to be greeted with a message about my IP address not being whiteflagged and not being authorized to access the account. Being that my IP address is dynamic, I don't think I want to constantly fight that battle about "approving" my IP address whenever it changes.
Create a ticket with voip.ms support to inquire. I've only good things to say about their response times and help.
Does anyone have bluetooth headsets working with csipsimple? On my nexus 5 I've yet to find a sip phone that works correctly with a headset.

groove and google voice gave me no echo when calling a landline from my wifi connection. i think this has to be your internet access that would be messing this up. . .or maybe it's just bad for voip to voip calls
I can personally attest to voip.ms + csipsimple + g729 codec ($10 dollars in the playstore) reliability as a voip setup for my Nexus 5. My set up is basically that GV forwards to my voip.ms DID which rings directly to my Nexus 5's csipsimple app. In the event that im not registered in csipsimple (e.g. lose connection, servers go down, etc) I have failover set up w/ voip.ms to ring to my real tmobile phone number. I have zero issues with call quality or echo and I have had full conversations with people on the phone even while driving. I also used this guys tip when first setting up, these may or may not change a thing but Ive had my csipsimple configured with these settings since day 1 also.
1. Go to settings
2. Click the menu button -> Expert Mode
3. Go to “media” -> select echo mode and choose WebRTC (probably already chosen)
4. In “media” go to “Audio troubleshooting” -> “Mic source” -> Voice call
5. in “Audio troubleshooting” -> “Audio implementation” -> Java
I use flowroute + csimpsimple (G729). Call quality is excellent and low latency on WiFi and LTE, and not bad over HSPA/HSPA+.
My main issue at the moment is bluetooth. I cannot get it to work with the bluetooth in my car (only bluetooth I have). I can get incoming audio OK, but it appears to be using the phone microphone for outgoing audio instead of the car microphone and it's very garbled and noisy.
There was a software issue in 4.2 regarding inline mic gain, 4.2.2 fixed it. GroovIP free worked fine for me after the update. There is only a few months left of google voice as they are shutting it down on May 15, 2014.
I have been using Viber for over two years. Works perfectly fine. Try it.
