Hello everyone, Im kinda new to all this
So i just decided to root my phone for the free wifi tethering to my laptop...I havent installed any custom rom just stock rooted with S-On(dont know if that matters).Ive used the Wifi tether app from the google market it connects but it takes me to the t mobile website asking me to add wifi tethering to my plan. so i tried other wifi apps from the market like open garden and barnicle but i get the same problem.I would be soo Happy if anyone can tell me a solution to this.
Thank you Very Much
If you want stock rooted with an unlocked native hotspot app flash MikTouch. Its based off the last ota is optimized
Just remember to fastboot flash boot boot.img after the ROM install so the modules match the kernel.

Well DUUUH! I didn't even CATCH the fact he already has ADB installed!
Just open up MikTouch & EXTRACT (not copy) the file boot.img to where you flash adb from. Then flash your ROM thru CWM recovery. Once done "adb reboot bootloader". Then "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and you'll see it sending your file. When done just "fastboot reboot" and check out MikTouch.
DO let it rest for about 5 minutes before you mess with it anymore though. Your ROM, I mean......

You don't need a 3rd party app. I use MikTouch all the time for tethering, my tower is so old there is no wireless card so my wifi at home is for my phones and I have to use my data to do all my downloading and uploading and whatnot

Ordinarily no. But I had something very similar happen to me once tethering my tablet and Tmo had evidently detected what I was doing. I got that blasted "sign up" screen on every internet connection I tried to make. They had replaced all my launch & homescreens with it. Once I replaced the ones I use with new installs it went away. But I had also changed from the original APN to another I picked up somewhere on these threads & can't remember what it was off the top of my head. But I'm looking......

No I've never seen anything like that on a rooted phone. I guess its because I don't abuse it like others, tethering isn't a replacement for high speed internet at home its a crutch lol

is there some sort of problem flashing directing from the psfreedom enabled kernel back to your preferred one? Does that break wifi and 4g or something? If so then I understand the middle step of flashing the psfreedom disable file, but if not it seems like a useless extra step.

a little unnecessary....
you dont have to use the disable and then flash the kernel. If you are using a rom that doesnt have a dedicated disable.zip made for it (Fresh and Baked Snack have one) then all you do is need to flash the kernel you want of top. This is how I've did it since day one without any issues or lost data of anything. I usually do a Dalvik/cache wipe before flashing the kernel but im not certain that its necessary. Im glad some one made a thread to at least let people know that a nandroid backup isnt needed, cause those take forever...
where can i find the fresh dedicated disable hack, thanks!

Its somewhere in the original Psfreedom for evo thread. start and the back and work your way forward and you'll find it.
all this does is avoid the nand restore by flashing back your original kernal. The reason i didn't include this in my thread was because everyone has their own kernal. Sure many use the same but to make it a one step no mess up without people who can't read posting OMG OMG, just nand restore...done. But ya, i chose not to include a "disable" which is essentially a reverting of the kernal.
Hey theres a PSFreedom recovery now! Hopefully well get one for the EVO 4G like this one...

so when u jailbreak the ps3 with the evo. do u need to plug it in again when u turn off the ps3. does it require the phone everytime to see the install package files icon?

Yep. Every time. Small price to pay though if you ask me. Ive backed up 2 games so far and they work flawlessly. No glitches, lag, nothing. I'll plug my evo in a hundred times for that.

I meant do i have to redo the whole re flashing of the zips. Because i dont mind pluging the phone into the ps3 every time. but reflashing the phone is the tidiest part.
U have to flash the psfreedom kernel every time.

UPDATE 3: OK, I am stumped. I have done everything I know to do and the recovery refuses to find the boot.img. Anyone got any suggestions???
UPDATE 2:
Still having problems. This time got failure at line 105. For some reason it couldn't find the boot image. I'll try again tomorrow...
UPDATE:
Just got home, got ClockworkMod, and tried flashing this ROM. Got a Failure at line 16. Then installation aborted. I will try to get this fixed and try it again. When it's working I will post a link. I should have this thing working sometime tonight. Hopefully, this will help out those who don't know how to or aren't comfortable removing stuff from the system file themselves. Once I get this working I will start working on ways to make it better.

Not true, i'm at work and it appeared on mine. I upgraded ROMManager about 3 hours ago just because I saw it. As soon as they said clockwork was available, i opened it up and went to flash recovery and the only option that popped up was the MT4G option. I'm on it now, just don't have any ROMs to install. I've run a backup already, i'm good to go.
***BTW, we don't have wifi available here and i'm on spotty 3G coverage in this area. I'm averaging about 500kbps dl speeds. it's horrible***
some people it works over the network but majority of people need wifi, including myself
I had to do it with WiFi and MT4G is there.

I would love to have a stock 2.2.1 rom if anyone has one. i've have messed some things up, and while I have a back up and phone is useable, I would like to start over again. Thanks.
and i just read an article saying the WiFi Xoom requires a VZW data plan to enable WiFi? is this true? any other reason his wont work? he said he was told there was software missing, like a driver the way he described it, basically says it doesnt recognize the WiFi hardware
Huh?
No the Motorolla Xoom Wifi Only (MZ604) does not require a verizon data plan.
Has your friend rooted and changed kernel? If so, it sounds like they have forgotten to push the new wifi drivers onto the device. So you will need to flash cwm and then flash the lastest kernel again.

He is running a bone stock setup, not even rooted. I havent even gotten my hands on it yet. He didn't even know what rooted meant until I explained it to him. He likes technology but doesn't care to really take the time to figure out why it does what it does. He's a former Crackberry-a-holic. He is very stoked on it but wishes WiFi would work.....I need to get my hands on it.

I got an update on my WIFI ONLY Xoom today, the 3.1 update.
I hit accept and install and it restarted and just hung on the Android with the exclamation mark. I hard rebooted it and its back up on 3.0.1, and now says its up to date

Any ideas? Im currently on Tiamat 1.4 , rooted
Sounds like the update failed. My guess is that it's because you're rooted and/or running a custom kernel/have made other changes to your Xoom.

I've been trying to get JB on my phone for a while now. I went back to completely stock and got the OTA. Downloaded and I thought it installed. Rebooted, still gingerbread. So I rerooted from scratch. Installed Codename Android on it. Booted up and was running fine for about 5 minutes, at this point I had only signed in to google. Hadn't restored or reloaded any apps. It rebooted on me again. Now. I can't get /sdcard to mount. Fastboot is saying I have no boot.img or recovery, But I can get scroll and click on recovery from that menu. I can't get the ****ing phone to do anything now. I've had this thing rooted since day 1. I'll be honest I really don't know how to use ADB.
Does anyone have any clue how to fix my damn phone?
Format SD through settings, Odin to stock and try again. This time read the instructions carefully... all of them.
Edit: Also make sure drivers are working for adb. Before moving on to another pc, I spent hours one day trying to get adb to work on one of my thinkpads. For whatever reason, I could not get the pad to recognize phone through adb.
