Hi,
Its my first post on XDA. I have a problem with root.
I really need rooted device, but I don't have PC around me, so I can't use ADB, fast boot etc.
Is there any chance to root my Xoom 4.1.1 with just a Xoom in my hands?
I have my sgs2 if that can help
You're going to struggle with this, I think there is the odd method that can root without unlocking the bootloader, heard of one a month or so back, it's around here on XDA somewhere but that also I'm pretty sure needed a PC. The standard method won't work then because you don't have a PC.
My answer is you're probably not going to be able to do it

You don't "root your xoom to 4.1.1." You flash a custom rom to it that is built off of 4.1.1.
The bootloader needs to be unlocked to root. You're going to need a computer to unlock the bootloader.

My bad, read it too fast. Either way the device needs to be unlocked to root, AFAIK.

It's a Nexus, you can always root.
So I can root with the current root method with no problems?
Not to hijack your thread, but I didn't want to make an entirely new one and it's kind of a related question.
So I've never rooted my NS before and I'm on 2.3.4. Is there any way I can root without having to wipe my phone, or will I just have to bite the bullet and do it.
I've been perfectly fine without root up until now, but the new colors really bug me and would like to fix them.
Usually when you root data usually gets lost what are you trying save?. The only thing that u are going to be able to save are your contacts.

Not sure what the "current root method" is, but it's the same process as usual: flash ClockworkMod Recovery, mount /system, apply the su zip, done.
(with the usual caveats about doing things properly so the recovery patcher doesn't trigger and remove CWM just after you flashed it)
ok well this is my scenerio..
i just bought my nexus s yesterday.... i got the OTA 2.3.4 and updated it..
i just want to know the EASIEST process to root my nexus s as i am not adb literate. Every phone that i had has been rooted previously so i never had to root a phone but i am getting all these threads to root the nexus s and damn it has to do with adb which i have no clue how to use.. but once im rooted i can change rom change themes etc.. its just the rooting process.. well any methods are welcome..
p.s sorry to jack your thread man
the first time I used adb was yesterday to unlock my nexus s and it really wasnt too bad so you should be good
Will this guide work with 2.3.4 without wipe everything? (i havent unlocked bootloader) h**p://download-apk.blogspot.com/2011/05/tutorial-rooting-unlock-bootloader-for.html ? If it's not, is there any way to root my nexus 2.3.4 with stock rom without wipe? I would appreciate any answers. Thank you.

Rooting does not require wiping IF your bootloader is unlocked. An open lock is shown below the Google tag when booting if you're unlocked.
Unlocking bootloader will always wipe for security reasons.
Make sure to sync contacts before doing anything. Then start here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
After that, flash a custom roms by the developers. They already comes with root and updated kernels. Hope this helps

Key word in his question. Just updated. I assumed that he meant 4.04
It depends if you're on Version 1.85. If so, yes, if you're on anything above 1.85, then no
Here are my current settings to clear up some of the misconfusion. Also if I'm able to unlock my boot loader and root my phone are there any suggestions as to what the best Roms are? (I know newb question) There are just so many different Roms out there that I'm not sure where to start.
You're in luck. Your phone is totally rootable and the bootloader can be unlocked. Sorry about my assumption earlier.
So assuming from the previous posts, I'm on 1.73
So I would use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167 to root?
I'm coming from an iPhone, this is my first android. If I want to install CM10, I would have to be on 1.85? I don't know anything.
This is overwhelming. :[
I'm the very definition of a noob. I can use my phone but I can't root them or develop for them to save my life.
thumbnail is a picture of my software information, so that you can see where I'm getting 1.73 from.
I'm assuming I'm in a good position for rooting.

edit: don't even bother updating to 1.85.. theres a method for 1.73 below my post. but DO install twrp after your bootloader is unlocked, just go to the play store and download "goo manager"

Everything you need is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Use the one-click root you linked. Then SuperCID, unlock bootloader. Install TWRP. Install CM10.
You don't need to be on 1.85.

You can root and unlock your bootloader. Make sure to not update your phone to 2.20 or you will not be able to root and unlock your bootloader.
I would try CleanROM out. Dev edition has a little bit of AOSP styling and that is what I am currently using.

So, being rooted, BL unlocked on 1.85, does CleanRom bring root back to my HOX or not really the case? Or I'm guessing 2.2x roms none have root?
Thanks

All custom roms have root. It's the official stock roms that don't have root. Once you unlock the bootloader you can root a stock rom by pushing the root package to the phone via custom recovery.

And just to rephrase you, same 1.85 root method can be applied to Scott's CR 4.5? And what is that dev version of CleanRom? How much AOSP in it?
Thanks for clarification, gunny

You don't understand. If you install a custom rom it is already rooted. The root methods you see in the development section are for stock firmware.

All custom ROMs already have root implemented by definition.
I rooted today and it worked like a charm, but I do have one more nooby question.
What does a recovery do for me exactly? Does it help me prevent soft bricks? Or what. I know you can't prevent a hard brick, but I also know that generally speaking to get a hard brick you'd have to have done something really stupid (usually).
I just figured this would be the place to post this since a few of you told me to install TWRP, which is a recovery program, and I know there's also clockwork recovery out there, but yeah.
I just wonder what I need the recovery for.

That's the whole question, actually. I've got a new Maxx HD that has stock ROM, locked bootloader and has never had root, and if it's already running 9.18.79. Has any method been found to either root it and/or unlock the bootloader?
No method available that successfully roots this version yet.

Actually, what I've read since getting the phone yesterday seems to differ just a bit from "no way to root". There's a thread on droidrzr.com that spells out what seems like a reasonable way to achieve root on an XT926 running 9.18.79. The thread is here http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/23729-rsd-scripts-samurihls-razr-hd-emporium/ I don't know if it works. I'll likely try it later this morning (need more coffee first).
However -- Everything I've read so far says that I'm out of luck in terms of getting the bootloader unlocked. That sucks because, well, we ought to be able to use our devices as we see fit. But If I am able to get root I'll be able to use most of the functionality I need.
One more thing I read (and forgot to bookmark) is that, if the root method above works on updated XT926s, I should be able to install Safestrap and maybe flash an older ROM that used Safestrap. I don't know if that's true and I don't know yet if I'll need that but one of my first goals when I get a new Razr HD is to find a way to get rid of the Navigation Bar and use PIE Control. I struggled mightily with that before the bootloader unlock was released because I'm just not smart enough to decompile my systemui and all that stuff.
I apologize I totally misread your post. Yes root is still possible but unlocking the bootloader is not at the moment.

Maybe it'll be OK. Obviously it'd be best to be able to unlock the bootloader but I've been able to root the phone, install Safestrap and install a couple of "older" ROMs. For my purposes that's probably enough. I can run any app I want, I can eliminate the Navbar that I hate (using PIE Control instead) and I'm rid of the Verizon bloat. Not ideal but not terrible either.
Alright, I just started trying to root my galaxy s3 a little while ago. I searched how to root it, and I got a video where I needed to unlock the bootloader. I tried unlocking it using the video's method, not realizing it was horribly out of date. So, the bootloader has been patched for that, I decided to try saferoot, and the kernel is patched for that. It recommended I use another method of rooting, but I don't know of any.
What should I try?

A friend of mine is looking to me to root his Verizon S3 and I just wanted to double check that the towelroot method has worked for it and is actually just as easy as downloading the apk and then running it? I'm sorry if I appear stupid but it has never been that simple on my HTC's lol. Thanks for your time.

It worked for a day or so then said it didn't have root, he rebooted and ran towelroot again and appeared to root again. Problem I'm wondering about is the message I get when I open superuser: "Samsung Knox has been detected. This might limit root capabilities and cause pop ups. Try to disable Knox?"

I don't know if that has anything to do with it. The first time I rooted for the long term (with saferoot on ML1) I BELIEVE that I disabled it and it was all good. I have been temporarily rooted and not disabled it and still not run into problems though

No cyanogen until bootloader unlock and custom recovery. Root may be possible on mac though. I haven't looked into it too much as to me it seems pointless until we get the bootloader unlock. Which may never happen.

Root on Mac is very possible. I rooted my Flex 2 on my Mac, through Windows 10 beta in a VM. No problems whatsoever.
ADB For Mac works great for everything else.
