I just tether to my phone. Haven't had any issues as long as I've got decent cell coverage (Verizon 3g)

If you need it a lot there's the possibility to buy a mobile router. You'll have to buy a second data plan though.
The advantage is that it has it's own power supply so you don't drain your phones battery.

[Q] Best way to achieve fastest speed using Mobile AP

Hey guys,
I've recently moves into a new house and don't want to pay the extra money for internet (since I already pay AT&T for unlimited internet).
My question is, what the best rom/modem/settings combo to use to achieve the fastest speeds possible. Currently I'm using CM7 with the KH1 modem over the built in Wireless AP.
Thanks!

after 137 posts you think that you would learn where to post... geezz...
If you read the general forum rules, it says if its a general question, just label the thread with a [q] tag.
Thanks for your help though.

1. Home internet is cheap (Comcast for $19.99/mo) and faster (more than 12 Mbps) compared to mobile. You also get more quota (~250GB/mo). Plus if ur phone is continuously dragging data, expect a call from AT&T soon. Its not worth the hassle of trying to save $20 a month.
2. The max speeds u get on phone will not change be it u r browsing on net, or via mobile AP. Infused 2.1 with KH1 is giving me ~3-4 Mbps down.
Mobile AP is good for occasional uses like u r on travel, or when the home internet down down for some reason.

I was actually curious to see how long it would take att to get on my back about ~50gb a month data usage.
I plan to stick it out with my mobile AP for at least a few months before looking into broadband

ive been using my mobile AP and i get faster internet from my mobile hotspot than i did when i was at home paying for ATT Elite DSL
and i dont go past 15gb per month,
Biggest limitations are your local towers and signal strength. Nothing you can do about the former, the latter can be improved with a bidirectional amp from Wilson Electronics.
However if you botch the install, a Wilson amp can make things worse. I have one in my car and it's amazing, but I'm an RF engineer by trade so I know its limitations and all of the installation gotchas.
It looks like the AT&T leaked ROM (UCKJ2) has speed cap on wifi tethering. It only provides 1mbps speed on wifi client. I tried multiple different builds, and it looks like cyanogenmod (CM7.1), and MIUI provides the best wifi hotspot performance.
Oh well, I like the samsung touchwiz interface, but I do want wifi hotspot performance (for my tablets). I will play with CM7.1 for now.

I too am curious about this, but from here in the U.K. How does tethering to a phone compare, how to go about tethering?
Sorry mate, not trying to hijack your thread.

i wouldnt bother with a dongle. i am on t-mobile in the uk, have a samsung GS2 and use the portable hotspot functionality to use my 3G connection on my transformer when out and about. it so east to setup a child could do it and it works a treat.
if your phone has hotspot functionality use that instead. so much easier than a dongle and it means you arent paying twice for 3G connection.

I would have definately done this, but I sold my sgs2 to pay for my tf. Do you know of any other phone which can do this? Obviously cheapest is the key for me at the mo.

I unfortunately have one of the few windows phones that doesn't and wont (I don't think) support portable hotspot. Plus id rather not have to worry about another thing to charge.

i bought the extended battery from samsung, gives me 2 and half days of heavy useage out of one charge
eg i was using the hotspot functionality at work for about 3 hours today, phone went from 97% charged to 80% charged.
it works a treat for me.
Last I checked skype pretty much worked well enough to replace a phone
You can tether to a phone via WiFi just fine, but most people travelling internationally are not blessed. In ten days, if I try to roam, it will cost me $10 per megabyte. Also, it will burn through your phones battery faster (my old phone would die maybe 2x - 2.5x faster).
3G dongles, you should be able to preload with data when you get in country or preload with suitable data service before going abroad. That makes them useful.

So no one can give me any recommendations?
An alternative approach
I don't know of a USB 3G modem that can be plugged in to the Transformer. I do have a sim-lock-free 3G Huawei K3520 modem (recognized as an E620 in GNU/Linux, and purportedly compatible with the E169). However I have not tried to get it to work with my Transformer (ie I have not plugged it in), so I can not say whether it works.
Instead I plug this USB 3G modem into a very small portable Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router that I own, and I use that to broadcast a local WAN that I log in with my Asus Transformer. I carry Edimax router around with me.
This Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router is both slightly smaller and SIGNIFICANTLY lighter than my Blackberry mobile phone, and it is easy to carry around. Why so ?
Because typically when I am outside, I have my Asus Tranformer inside my backback. Well the Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router and the 3G Huawei K3520 modem take up next to no additional space in the backpack, and their weight is insignificant compared to the Transformer and basic backpack weight.
By using the 3G Huawei K3520 modem and Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router combination, both my wife (with her iPod) and myself (with my Transformer) can access the Internet at the same time with one 3G account, saving money.
During one test, we had connected at the same time to this 3G Huawei K3520 modem and Edimax 3G-6218N mobile router combination:
Asus Transformer TF-101B
iPod Touch 3G
Lenovo X220 laptop
Dell Studio 1537 laptop
Blackberry Torch phone using its wireless
all sharing the same 3G connection. It would be a LOT more expensive to have to have a separate 3G account for each device.
I know this is not the answer you are looking for, and my apologies for that. But I think it worth considering on your part.
There's a thread about using dongles with the transformer but there's lots of compatible dongles, i don't want to have to go through the entire list finding which one is cheapest.

What's better?... P6200, P6210, or P6201-N

Just thought I would make a topic to see which one of the GT7+ models are better. what's everyone opinion about all the models. wifi only v.s 3g.. Having an IR blaster v.s not having one.
I have the P6210
1- I like having the option of having the IR but what's the point? There is not really any apps out there that work with it, plus the app that comes with the tab doesn't work on older TVs so I never use it.
2- Since the one I have is wifi only after having it for a few months now I wish I had the 3g version. I bought the 7 inch for portability but once I leave my house it becomes an oversized gaming device, since there's not much I can do without internet connection. so I end up tethering it to my phone which kills the battery extremely fast.
so what's your opinion?

I personally think that connectivity is the key of all these devices. Wifi only just does not make any sense to me. 3G all the way...
I got the wifi version and bluetooth tether to phone for data. Why would I want two data charges?

I second this.. I always have my phone around if I need to tether the tab. The additional cost of the device paired with the data plan is not worth it
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
I was thinking about that, meaning tethering to a phone... Not everyone can tether to there phone some people have older phones that don't support tethering... plus you can't tether unless your phone is rooted (which mine is of course) without getting a really big phone bill, as far as I know but I could be wrong. Wifi only its not to bad, I guess I can carry around a cell phone charger (since tethering kills my battery) rather than paying a extra data charge

Same here in Honduras, 30 $ a month unlimited 3G , and I use my P6200 as my primary and only phone
WiFi or 3G
The WiFi or 3G argument depends on how you intend to use your tab. I bought the WiFi only tab because I honestly have no use for 3G on my tab. It would just be another bill. I pretty much only use my tab where I have access to WiFi as it is though. I had bought it because I was getting tired of dragging my laptop into meetings or around the office for various reasons. We have full WiFi coverage everywhere at work so the tab comes in handy for quick checking of my mail or my calendar and it is perfect for taking notes and such in meetings. When I go home, the tab comes home with me and once at home I connect it to my WiFi. If I am out and about town and need to check my e-mail or checkout something on the Internet I just use my smartphone and usually do not have my tab with me anyway when doing things out and about. About the only other time I bring my tab with me is if I am headed over to a friends for awhile. All of my friends have WiFi so WiFi only is still not an issue. So as you can see, at least in my case 3G would just be a needless and unwanted monthly bill.

May I ask how much you paid for your Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus?
I personally think 3G on tablets is a waste of money (keyword: personally). I'm never going to pull out my 7" tablet in the middle of the street to check something when I also have a smartphone. And if I'm sitting down somewhere, most likely there'll be Wifi.

[Q] How I can connect 4g Android phone to Router to provide wifi for the home?

We finally got 4g on Sprint (have HTC EVO and S3) at 21mb download and 7mb upload while best we can get DSl is still 6mb d/l 512k u/l so I am thinking hey if I add another line for $19.99 to our family unlimited plan, connect that phone to a router we have cheap and high speed networking.
I know they sell data cards with wifi etc but they charge high price and have limited data. So how can I do this? Simply and cheaply?

I'm not sure but why don't you do USB tethering on your laptop. And then turn on your laptop's WiFi hotspot.
Just turn on the hotspot from the phone itself.

Problem is Sprint charges extra for Hotspot lol I am experimenting with AP

Any non-root Tether options shake loose after the update??

Just wondering. I never did the unlock as I really just need tether. Wondering if there were any developments in that department.
I feel confident that the FoxFi\PDAnet developers will come through with a solution as they did for the Samsung KitKat devices. A process report would be helpful.
You can always pony up the extra money per month for the officially sanctioned mobile Hotspot feature. You can also use Faveset Klink over USB to a small always-on PC that acts as a wireless router. An Intel NUC is a good example of that. Both of these solutions do not involve paying Verizon any extra money per month, though they may not be 100% kosher as far as the ToS for your unlimited data plan. I went the legit route and signed up for the mobile Hotspot feature. Hurts the wallet but I'll never need to worry about NUCs or the possibility that I'll never be able to root my device and be stuck without a tethering solution.

My job is providing me with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4" which I should be getting in the next couple of days...but it's WiFi only. They will buy tablets but not data plans and they will only buy WiFi only tablets. So if I want cellular data its up to me. Note: Please don't reply with "why don't you unlock and/or root" because I've already made the decision not to do that.
I am lucky enough to still have an unlimited data plan on my Droid Maxx. I checked out buying a Verizon MiFi device, but that would require a change in my data plan and I would lose unlimited . On a MiFi, I would end up on a 5 GB data plan shared between my phone and the MiFi but my total cost would be only $10 higher than I pay today. On the other hand, tethering is a feature I can turn on without changing data plans - but that's $30 per month. But I mostly only need it when traveling and the feature can be turned on and off at will. I can do the math for myself to decide which is more cost effective. But that leads to my question:
If I pay for tethering, how well does it really work? Does a tethered phone work just as well as the MiFi? Or are there other advantages to the MiFi?
I realize you are asking a specific question and I am not answering that, but wanted to throw something out you may not have considered:
You can buy a used Verizon 4G LTE mifi off ebay for $30.
Your unlimited data plan is associated with the sim in your Maxx.
The mifi takes a sim too. Size adapters are easy to find on ebay or Amazon.
I'll let you connect the dots.
Verizon's policy: http://www.phonenews.com/verizon-af...ard-usage-in-hotspots-tablets-lte-ipad-20053/
Hope this helps.

Hmmmm. That's a very interesting article and I was completely unaware of the issues it raises. Only problem is that without the SIM card, my Droid Max becomes mostly a useless brick...or does it it? I found this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvQ6tyWKXbg
But then the Droid Max would always need a WiFi Connection. When I get home I'm going to try out the app mentioned in the video above on my old Og Droid I still have laying around. It's not activated on Verizon but it still works via WiFi.....
I would look at this solution as disabling the Maxx to use the sim in a mifi, just to keep it simple. When out of a case, the sim in the Maxx is easy to access. This may not work for you but is a cheap workaround for me and my non-rootable phone (I have a Maxx too) when I occasionally travel and can do without the phone for hours at a time. Again, just another option to consider if it fits your particular requirements.
How you unlocked your fone
